22 “各位父老弟兄，请听听我现在对你们的申辩。” 2 他们听见保罗用希伯来语说话，就更加安静了。保罗说： 3 “我是犹太人，生在基利家的大数，在城里长大，按照我们祖宗律法的严格要求，在迦玛列门下受教，我为 神热心，好象你们大家今天一样。 4 我曾经迫害信奉这道的人直至死地，把男男女女都捆绑起来，送进监狱， 5 这是大祭司和全公议会都可以给我作证的。我也从他们那里得到了写给众弟兄的信，就去大马士革，要把那里的人捆绑起来，带到耶路撒冷接受惩罚。

6 “约在正午，当我走近大马士革的时候，忽然有大光从天上向我四面照射， 7 我仆倒在地上，听见有声音对我说：‘扫罗，扫罗，你为甚么迫害我？’ 8 我回答：‘主啊，你是谁？’他说：‘我就是你所迫害的拿撒勒人耶稣。’ 9 跟我在一起的人，只看见那光，却听不清楚那位对我说话的声音。 10 我说：‘主啊，我应当作甚么呢？’主说：‘起来，进大马士革去，在那里有人会把指定给你作的一切事告诉你。’ 11 因为那光太强烈，我的眼睛就瞎了，跟我在一起的人就牵着我的手，进了大马士革。
12 “有一个人名叫亚拿尼亚的，他是一个虔诚而遵守律法的人，当地所有的犹太人都称赞他。 13 他来见我，站在我旁边，对我说：‘扫罗弟兄，你现在可以看见了。’我立刻往上一看，看见了他。 14 他又说：‘我们祖先的 神选派了你，让你明白他的旨意，看见那义者，听见他口中的声音。 15 因为你要把所看见所听见的，向万人为他作见证。 16 现在你为甚么还耽搁呢？起来受洗，求告他的名，洗净你的罪吧。’

17 “后来，我回到耶路撒冷，在殿里祷告的时候，魂游象外， 18 看见主对我说：‘你要快快离开耶路撒冷，因为你为我作的见证，他们是不会接受的。’ 19 我说：‘主啊，他们知道我曾把信你的人监禁起来，又在各会堂拷打他们， 20 并且你的见证人司提反受害流血的时候，我也亲自在场，表示同意，并且为杀他的人看守衣服。’ 21 他对我说：‘你走吧，我要派你到远方的外族人那里去。’”
保罗与千夫长

Paul’s Defense at Jerusalem
22 “Brethren(A) and fathers, hear my defense before you now.” 2 And when they heard that he spoke to them in the (B)Hebrew language, they kept all the more silent.
Then he said: 3 (C)“I am indeed a Jew, born in Tarsus of Cilicia, but brought up in this city (D)at the feet of (E)Gamaliel, taught (F)according to the strictness of our fathers’ law, and (G)was zealous toward God (H)as you all are today. 4 (I)I persecuted this Way to the death, binding and delivering into prisons both men and women, 5 as also the high priest bears me witness, and (J)all the council of the elders, (K)from whom I also received letters to the brethren, and went to Damascus (L)to bring in chains even those who were there to Jerusalem to be punished.
6 “Now (M)it happened, as I journeyed and came near Damascus at about noon, suddenly a great light from heaven shone around me. 7 And I fell to the ground and heard a voice saying to me, ‘Saul, Saul, why are you persecuting Me?’ 8 So I answered, ‘Who are You, Lord?’ And He said to me, ‘I am Jesus of Nazareth, whom you are persecuting.’
9 “And (N)those who were with me indeed saw the light [a]and were afraid, but they did not hear the voice of Him who spoke to me. 10 So I said, ‘What shall I do, Lord?’ And the Lord said to me, ‘Arise and go into Damascus, and there you will be told all things which are appointed for you to do.’ 11 And since I could not see for the glory of that light, being led by the hand of those who were with me, I came into Damascus.
12 “Then (O)a certain Ananias, a devout man according to the law, (P)having a good testimony with all the (Q)Jews who dwelt there, 13 came to me; and he stood and said to me, ‘Brother Saul, receive your sight.’ And at that same hour I looked up at him. 14 Then he said, (R)‘The God of our fathers (S)has chosen you that you should (T)know His will, and (U)see the Just One, (V)and hear the voice of His mouth. 15 (W)For you will be His witness to all men of (X)what you have seen and heard. 16 And now why are you waiting? Arise and be baptized, (Y)and wash away your sins, (Z)calling on the name of the Lord.’
17 “Now (AA)it happened, when I returned to Jerusalem and was praying in the temple, that I was in a trance 18 and (AB)saw Him saying to me, (AC)‘Make haste and get out of Jerusalem quickly, for they will not receive your testimony concerning Me.’ 19 So I said, ‘Lord, (AD)they know that in every synagogue I imprisoned and (AE)beat those who believe on You. 20 (AF)And when the blood of Your martyr Stephen was shed, I also was standing by (AG)consenting [b]to his death, and guarding the clothes of those who were killing him.’ 21 Then He said to me, ‘Depart, (AH)for I will send you far from here to the Gentiles.’ ”
Paul’s Roman Citizenship
22 And they listened to him until this word, and then they raised their voices and said, (AI)“Away with such a fellow from the earth, for (AJ)he is not fit to live!” 23 Then, as they cried out and [c]tore off their clothes and threw dust into the air, 24 the commander ordered him to be brought into the barracks, and said that he should be examined under scourging, so that he might know why they shouted so against him. 25 And as they bound him with thongs, Paul said to the centurion who stood by, (AK)“Is it lawful for you to scourge a man who is a Roman, and uncondemned?”
26 When the centurion heard that, he went and told the commander, saying, “Take care what you do, for this man is a Roman.”
27 Then the commander came and said to him, “Tell me, are you a Roman?”
He said, “Yes.”
28 The commander answered, “With a large sum I obtained this citizenship.”
And Paul said, “But I was born a citizen.”
29 Then immediately those who were about to examine him withdrew from him; and the commander was also afraid after he found out that he was a Roman, and because he had bound him.
The Sanhedrin Divided
30 The next day, because he wanted to know for certain why he was accused by the Jews, he released him from his bonds, and commanded the chief priests and all their council to appear, and brought Paul down and set him before them.

3 I am verily a man which am a Jew, born in Tarsus, a city in Cilicia, yet brought up in this city at the feet of Gamaliel, and taught according to the perfect manner of the law of the fathers, and was zealous toward God, as ye all are this day.
4 And I persecuted this way unto the death, binding and delivering into prisons both men and women.
5 As also the high priest doth bear me witness, and all the estate of the elders: from whom also I received letters unto the brethren, and went to Damascus, to bring them which were there bound unto Jerusalem, for to be punished.
6 And it came to pass, that, as I made my journey, and was come nigh unto Damascus about noon, suddenly there shone from heaven a great light round about me.
7 And I fell unto the ground, and heard a voice saying unto me, Saul, Saul, why persecutest thou me?
8 And I answered, Who art thou, Lord? And he said unto me, I am Jesus of Nazareth, whom thou persecutest.
9 And they that were with me saw indeed the light, and were afraid; but they heard not the voice of him that spake to me.

24 The chief captain commanded him to be brought into the castle, and bade that he should be examined by scourging; that he might know wherefore they cried so against him.
25 And as they bound him with thongs, Paul said unto the centurion that stood by, Is it lawful for you to scourge a man that is a Roman, and uncondemned?
26 When the centurion heard that, he went and told the chief captain, saying, Take heed what thou doest: for this man is a Roman.
27 Then the chief captain came, and said unto him, Tell me, art thou a Roman? He said, Yea.
28 And the chief captain answered, With a great sum obtained I this freedom. And Paul said, But I was free born.
29 Then straightway they departed from him which should have examined him: and the chief captain also was afraid, after he knew that he was a Roman, and because he had bound him.
30 On the morrow, because he would have known the certainty wherefore he was accused of the Jews, he loosed him from his bands, and commanded the chief priests and all their council to appear, and brought Paul down, and set him before them.

I was zealous for God, just as all of you are today.(D) 4 I persecuted this Way(E) to the death, arresting and putting both men and women in jail,(F) 5 as both the high priest and the whole council of elders can testify about me. After I received letters from them to the brothers, I travelled to Damascus to arrest those who were there and bring them to Jerusalem to be punished.(G)
Paul’s Testimony
6 ‘As(H) I was travelling and approaching Damascus, about noon an intense light from heaven suddenly flashed around me. 7 I fell to the ground and heard a voice saying to me, “Saul, Saul, why are you persecuting me? ”
8 ‘I answered, “Who are you, Lord? ”
‘He said to me, “I am Jesus of Nazareth, the one you are persecuting.” 9 Now those who were with me saw the light,[b] but they did not hear the voice of the one who was speaking to me.(I)
10 ‘I said, “What should I do, Lord? ”
‘The Lord told me, “Get up and go into Damascus, and there you will be told everything that you have been assigned to do.”
11 ‘Since I couldn’t see because of the brightness of the light,[c] I was led by the hand by those who were with me, and went into Damascus.(J) 12 Someone named Ananias, a devout man according to the law, who had a good reputation with all the Jews living there,(K) 13 came and stood by me and said, “Brother Saul, regain your sight.” And in that very hour I looked up and saw him. 14 And he said, “The God of our ancestors has appointed(L) you to know his will, to see(M) the Righteous One,(N) and to hear the words from his mouth, 15 since you will be a witness for him to all people of what you have seen and heard.(O) 16 And now, why are you delaying? 19 ‘But I said, “Lord, they know that in synagogue after synagogue I had those who believed in you imprisoned and beaten.(S) 20 And when the blood of your witness Stephen was being shed, I stood there giving approval[d] and guarding the clothes of those who killed him.”(T)
21 ‘He said to me, “Go, because I will send you far away to the Gentiles.” ’(U)
Paul’s Roman Protection
22 They listened to him up to this point. Then they raised their voices, shouting, ‘Wipe this man off the face of the earth! He should not be allowed to live! ’(V)
23 As they were yelling and flinging aside their garments and throwing dust into the air,(W) 24 the commander ordered him to be brought into the barracks, directing that he be interrogated with the scourge to discover the reason they were shouting against him like this. 25 As they stretched him out for the lash, Paul said to the centurion standing by, ‘Is it legal for you to scourge a man who is a Roman citizen and is uncondemned? ’(X)
26 When the centurion heard this, he went and reported to the commander, saying, ‘What are you going to do? For this man is a Roman citizen.’
27 The commander came and said to him, ‘Tell me, are you a Roman citizen? ’
‘Yes,’ he said.
28 The commander replied, ‘I bought this citizenship for a large amount of money.’
‘But I was born a citizen,’ Paul said.
29 So those who were about to examine him withdrew from him immediately. The commander too was alarmed when he realised Paul was a Roman citizen and he had bound him.(Y)
Paul before the Sanhedrin
30 The next day, since he wanted to find out exactly why Paul was being accused by the Jews, he released him[e] and instructed the chief priests and all the Sanhedrin to convene.(Z) He brought Paul down and placed him before them.
