2 And when the days of Pentecost were filled [were fulfilled], all the disciples were together in the same place.
2 And suddenly there was made a sound from heaven, as of a great wind coming, and it filled all the house where they sat [and it filled all the house where they were sitting].
3 And diverse tongues as fire appeared to them, and it sat on each of them. [And tongues diversely parted as fire appeared to them, and it sat upon each of them.]
4 And all were filled with the Holy Ghost, and they began to speak in diverse languages [and they began to speak with diverse tongues], as the Holy Ghost gave to them to speak.
5 And there were in Jerusalem dwelling Jews, religious men, of each nation that is under heaven.
6 And when this voice was made, the multitude came together, and were astonished in thought [and in soul, or understanding, was confounded, or astonished], for each man heard them speaking in his own language.
7 And all were astonished, and wondered, and said together, Whether not all these that speak be men of Galilee, [Forsooth all men were astonished, and wondered, saying together, Whether not all these that speak be Galileans,]
8 and how heard we each man our language in which we be born? [and how we heard each man his tongue in which we be born?]
9 Parthians, and Medes, and Elamites, and they that dwell at Mesopotamia [and they that dwell in Mesopotamia], Judaea, and Cappadocia, Pontus, and Asia,
10 Phrygia, and Pamphylia, Egypt, and the parts of Libya, that is about Cyrene, and comelings Romans, and Jews, and proselytes,
11 men of Crete, and of Arabia, we have heard them speaking in our languages the great things of God. [men of Crete and Arabia, we have heard them speaking in our tongues the great things of God.]
12 And all were astonished, and wondered, saying together, What will this thing be?
13 And others scorned, and said [saying], For these men be full of must.
14 But Peter stood with the eleven, and raised up his voice [Forsooth Peter standing with the eleven, raised his voice], and spake to them, Ye [men] Jews, and all that dwell at Jerusalem, be this known to you, and with ears perceive ye my words [and with ears perceive my words].
15 For not as ye ween [Soothly not as ye deem, or guess], these be drunken, when it is the third hour of the day;
16 but this it is, that was said by the prophet Joel,
17 And it shall be in the last days, the Lord saith, I shall pour out my Spirit on each flesh [I shall pour out my Spirit on all flesh]; and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your elders shall dream swevens.
18 And on my servants and on mine handmaidens in those days I shall pour out of my Spirit, and they shall prophesy.
19 And I shall give great wonders in heaven above, and signs in earth beneath, blood, and fire, and heat of smoke [blood, and fire, and vapour of smoke].
20 The sun shall be turned into darkness, and the moon into blood, before that the great and the open day of the Lord come [before that the great and open day of the Lord shall come].
21 And it shall be, each man whichever shall call to help the name of the Lord, shall be safe.
22 Ye men of Israel, hear ye these words. Jesus of Nazareth, a man approved of God before you by works of power, and wonders, and tokens [Ye men of Israel, hear these words. Jesus of Nazareth, a man proved of God in you by virtues, or miracles, and wonders, and tokens], which God did by him in the middle of you, as ye know,
23 ye tormented, and killed him by the hands of wicked men, by counsel determined and betaken by the fore-knowing of God. [him, the counsel determined, or ended, and by the prescience, or before-knowing, of God, betaken by the hands of wicked ye tormenting slew.]
24 Whom God raised, when sorrows of hell were unbound, by that that it was impossible that he were holden of it [after that it was impossible him to be holden of it].
25 For David saith of him, I saw afar the Lord before me evermore, for he is on my right half, that I be not moved.
26 For this thing mine heart joyed, and my tongue made full out joy [and my tongue gladded], and moreover my flesh shall rest in hope.
27 For thou shalt not leave my soul in hell, neither thou shalt give thine holy to see corruption.
28 Thou hast made known to me the ways of life, thou shalt fill me [thou shalt full-fill me] with mirth with thy face.
29 Brethren [Men brethren], be it leaveful boldly to say to you of the patriarch David, for he is dead and buried, and his sepulchre is among us into this day.
30 Therefore when he was a prophet, and knew, that with a great oath God had sworn to him [that with an oath God had sworn to him], that of the fruit of his loins should one sit on his seat,
31 he seeing afar spake of the resurrection of Christ, for neither he was left in hell, neither his flesh saw corruption.
32 God raised this Jesus, to whom we all be witnesses.
33 Therefore he was enhanced by the right hand of God, and through the promise of the Holy Ghost that he took of the Father, he shedded out this Spirit, that ye see and hear. [Therefore he enhanced by the right hand of God, and by the promise of the Holy Ghost taken of the Father, he shedded out this, that ye see and hear.]
34 For David ascended not into heaven; but he saith, The Lord said to my Lord, Sit thou on my right half,
35 till I put thine enemies the stool of thy feet.
36 Therefore most certainly know all the house of Israel, that God made him both Lord and Christ, this Jesus, whom ye crucified.
37 When they heard these things, they were compuncted in heart; and they said to Peter and [to] other apostles, Brethren [Men brethren], what shall we do?
38 And Peter said to them, Do ye penance [Penance, he said, do ye], and each of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ, into remission of your sins; and ye shall take the gift of the Holy Ghost.
39 For the promise is to you, and to your sons, and to all that be far, whichever our Lord God hath called. [Forsooth repromission is to you, and to your sons, and to all that be far, whomever the Lord our God hath called to.]
40 Also with other words full many he witnessed to them, and admonished them, and said, Be ye saved from this depraved generation [saying, Be ye saved from this wicked, or shrewd, generation].
41 Then they that received his word were baptized, and in that day souls were increased, about three thousand;
42 and [they] were lasting stably in the teaching of the apostles, and in communing of the breaking of bread [and communing of breaking of bread], and in prayers.
43 And dread was made to each man [Forsooth dread was made to each soul]. And many wonders and signs were done by the apostles in Jerusalem, and great dread was in all.
44 And all that believed were together, and had all things common.
45 They sold possessions and chattel [They sold possessions and substances, or goods], and parted those things to all men, as it was need to each.
46 And each day they dwelled stably with one will in the temple, and brake bread about houses, and took meat with full out joy and simpleness of heart, [Forsooth day by day they lasting together in the temple, and breaking bread about houses, took meat with gladness and simpleness of heart,]

Coming of the Holy Spirit

The Crowd’s Response
5 And there were dwelling in Jerusalem Jews, (F)devout men, from every nation under heaven. 6 And when this sound occurred, the (G)multitude came together, and were confused, because everyone heard them speak in his own language. 7 Then they were all amazed and marveled, saying to one another, “Look, are not all these who speak (H)Galileans? 8 And how is it that we hear, each in our own [c]language in which we were born? 9 Parthians and Medes and Elamites, those dwelling in Mesopotamia, Judea and (I)Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, 10 Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya adjoining Cyrene, visitors from Rome, both Jews and proselytes, 11 Cretans and [d]Arabs—we hear them speaking in our own tongues the wonderful works of God.” 12 So they were all amazed and perplexed, saying to one another, “Whatever could this mean?”
13 Others mocking said, “They are full of new wine.”
Peter’s Sermon(J)
14 But Peter, standing up with the eleven, raised his voice and said to them, “Men of Judea and all who dwell in Jerusalem, let this be known to you, and heed my words. 15 For these are not drunk, as you suppose, (K)since it is only [e]the third hour of the day. 16 But this is what was spoken by the prophet Joel:
17 ‘And(L) it shall come to pass in the last days, says God,
(M)That I will pour out of My Spirit on all flesh;
Your sons and (N)your daughters shall prophesy,
Your young men shall see visions,
Your old men shall dream dreams.
18 And on My menservants and on My maidservants
I will pour out My Spirit in those days;
(O)And they shall prophesy.
19 (P)I will show wonders in heaven above
And signs in the earth beneath:
Blood and fire and vapor of smoke.
20 (Q)The sun shall be turned into darkness,
And the moon into blood,
Before the coming of the great and awesome day of the Lord.
21 And it shall come to pass
That (R)whoever calls on the name of the Lord
Shall be saved.’
22 “Men of Israel, hear these words: Jesus of Nazareth, a Man attested by God to you (S)by miracles, wonders, and signs which God did through Him in your midst, as you yourselves also know— 23 Him, (T)being delivered by the determined purpose and foreknowledge of God, (U)you [f]have taken by lawless hands, have crucified, and put to death; 24 (V)whom God raised up, having [g]loosed the [h]pains of death, because it was not possible that He should be held by it. 25 For David says concerning Him:
(W)‘I foresaw the Lord always before my face,
For He is at my right hand, that I may not be shaken.
26 Therefore my heart rejoiced, and my tongue was glad;
Moreover my flesh also will rest in hope.
27 For You will not leave my soul in Hades,
Nor will You allow Your Holy One to see (X)corruption.
28 You have made known to me the ways of life;
You will make me full of joy in Your presence.’
29 “Men and brethren, let me speak freely to you (Y)of the patriarch David, that he is both dead and buried, and his tomb is with us to this day. 30 Therefore, being a prophet, (Z)and knowing that God had sworn with an oath to him that of the fruit of his body, [i]according to the flesh, He would raise up the Christ to sit on his throne, 31 he, foreseeing this, spoke concerning the resurrection of the Christ, (AA)that His soul was not left in Hades, nor did His flesh see corruption. 32 (AB)This Jesus God has raised up, (AC)of which we are all witnesses. 33 Therefore (AD)being exalted [j]to (AE)the right hand of God, and (AF)having received from the Father the promise of the Holy Spirit, He (AG)poured out this which you now see and hear.
34 “For David did not ascend into the heavens, but he says himself:
(AH)‘The Lord said to my Lord,
“Sit at My right hand,
35 Till I make Your enemies Your footstool.” ’
36 “Therefore let all the house of Israel know assuredly that God has made this Jesus, whom you crucified, both Lord and Christ.”
37 Now when they heard this, (AI)they were cut to the heart, and said to Peter and the rest of the apostles, “Men and brethren, what shall we do?”
38 Then Peter said to them, (AJ)“Repent, and let every one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the [k]remission of sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. 39 For the promise is to you and (AK)to your children, and (AL)to all who are afar off, as many as the Lord our God will call.”
A Vital Church Grows
40 And with many other words he testified and exhorted them, saying, “Be saved from this [l]perverse generation.” 41 Then those who [m]gladly received his word were baptized; and that day about three thousand souls were added to them. 42 (AM)And they continued steadfastly in the apostles’ [n]doctrine and fellowship, in the breaking of bread, and in prayers. 43 Then fear came upon every soul, and (AN)many wonders and signs were done through the apostles. 44 Now all who believed were together, and (AO)had all things in common, 45 and [o]sold their possessions and goods, and (AP)divided[p] them among all, as anyone had need.
46 (AQ)So continuing daily with one accord (AR)in the temple, and (AS)breaking bread from house to house, they ate their food with gladness and simplicity of heart, 47 praising God and having favor with all the people. And (AT)the Lord added [q]to the church daily those who were being saved.

2 När pingstdagen[a] kom, var de troende alla samlade. 2 Då hördes plötsligt ett dån från himlen som en väldig storm och det fyllde hela huset där de satt. 3 Sedan såg de något som såg ut som eldslågor och de delade på sig och stannade över var och en av dem. 4 Och alla blev fyllda av den heliga Anden och började tala andra språk som Anden gav dem.
5 Många hängivna judar från olika länder var i Jerusalem 6 och när de hörde dånet, samlades en stor mängd människor. Förvånade fick de då höra sina egna språk talas. 7 De var helt förbluffade och sa: ”Hur kan det komma sig? De här människorna är ju alla från Galileen 8 och ändå hör vi dem tala på våra egna språk. 9 Vi är parther, meder och elamiter. Vi kommer från Mesopotamien, Judeen, Kappadokien, Pontos, Asien, 10 Frygien, Pamfylien,[b] Egypten och från trakten kring Kyrene i Libyen. Vi är besökare från Rom, 11 både judar och proselyter, vi är kretensare och araber. Och ändå hör vi dessa människor tala om Guds mäktiga gärningar på våra egna språk!” 12 De var förvirrade och visste inte vad de skulle tro och de frågade varandra: ”Vad kan det här betyda?” 13 Men andra sa hånfullt: ”De är väl bara fulla av sött vin!”
Petrus tal på pingstdagen
14 Då steg Petrus fram tillsammans med de elva andra och började tala högt och tydligt till folket: ”Hör på mig ni judar och alla som bor i Jerusalem! Detta ska ni veta! 15 De här männen är inte fulla som ni menar. Klockan är ju bara nio på morgonen. 16 Nej, detta är vad som sagts genom profeten Joel:
17 ’Det ska ske i den sista tiden, säger Gud,
att jag ska utgjuta min Ande över alla människor.
Era söner och döttrar ska profetera,
era unga män ska se syner,
och era gamla män ska ha drömmar.
18 Också över mina tjänare och tjänarinnor
ska jag på den tiden utgjuta min Ande,
och de ska profetera.
19 Jag ska låta tecken visa sig uppe på himlen
och nere på jorden: blod och eld och rökmoln.
20 Solen ska vändas i mörker
och månen i blod innan Herrens stora och underbara dag kommer.
21 Men var och en som åkallar Herrens namn
ska bli räddad.’[c]
22 Lyssna på vad jag säger ni israeliter! Gud bekräftade Jesus från Nasarets uppdrag genom kraftgärningar, under och tecken. Det vet ni själva. 23 Han utlämnades efter den plan som Gud hade bestämt och gjort upp och ni lät laglösa[d] människor spika fast honom och döda honom. 24 Men Gud befriade honom från dödens fasor och lät honom uppstå, eftersom det var omöjligt för döden att hålla honom i sitt grepp.
25 David sa ju om honom:
’Jag har alltid Herren inför mig,
eftersom han står vid min sida vacklar jag inte.
26 Därför är mitt hjärta fyllt av glädje och jag ropar ut mitt jubel,
också min kropp vilar i det hoppet,
27 att du inte ska lämna mig kvar i dödsriket,
eller låta din Helige förmultna.
28 Du visar mig vägen till livet,
du fyller mig med glädje inför dig.’[e]
29 Mina syskon! Jag kan tryggt säga till er att vår stamfar David dog och blev begravd och att hans grav fortfarande finns här ibland oss. 30 Men han var en profet och visste att Gud med ed hade lovat att en av hans ättlingar skulle få sitta på hans tron. 31 Han förutsade därför Messias uppståndelse: ’Han ska inte lämnas kvar i dödsriket och hans kropp ska inte förmultna.’ 32 Gud har låtit Jesus uppstå och vi alla kan vittna om det.
33 Gud har upphöjt Jesus och satt honom på sin högra sida.[f] Han har av Fadern fått ta emot den utlovade heliga Anden, som han nu har låtit komma över oss. Det är det ni har sett och hört här idag. 34 David steg ju heller aldrig upp till himlen. Men han säger:
’Herren sa till min Herre:
”Sätt dig på min högra sida,
35 tills jag har lagt dina fiender
som en pall under dina fötter.” ’[g]
36 Hela Israels folk måste alltså klart förstå att Gud har gjort Jesus till Herre och Messias, denna Jesus som ni korsfäste.”
37 När folket hörde det här gick det rakt in i deras hjärtan och de frågade Petrus och de andra apostlarna: ”Bröder, vad ska vi göra?”
38 Petrus svarade: ”Omvänd er och låt er alla döpas i Jesus Kristus namn, så ska ni få förlåtelse för era synder. Ni ska då också få den heliga Anden som gåva. 39 För detta löfte gäller er och era barn och alla dem långt borta som Herren vår Gud kallar.”
40 Sedan fortsatte Petrus att vittna och vädja till dem med många andra ord och han uppmanade dem: ”Se till att ni blir räddade undan detta vilsegångna släkte!” 41 De som trodde på vad Petrus sa lät sedan döpa sig. Och den dagen ökade antalet troende med omkring 3 000 personer.
De troende samlas
42 De troende höll sig till apostlarnas undervisning och de hade gemenskap med varandra och bröt bröd[h] tillsammans och bad. 43 Människorna hade en djup respekt för dem och apostlarna utförde många under och tecken. 44 Alla de troende var ständigt tillsammans och hade allting gemensamt. 45 De sålde allt vad de ägde och delade med sig till varandra, allt efter vars och ens behov. 46 Varje dag möttes de i templet, och i hemmen samlades de för att bryta bröd och äta tillsammans i glädje och uppriktig hjärtlighet, 47 de prisade Gud och var omtyckta av hela folket. Varje dag lät Herren deras grupp växa, genom att fler och fler blev räddade.

The Holy Spirit Comes at Pentecost
2 When the day of Pentecost(A) came, they were all together(B) in one place. 2 Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting.(C) 3 They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them. 4 All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit(D) and began to speak in other tongues[a](E) as the Spirit enabled them.
5 Now there were staying in Jerusalem God-fearing(F) Jews from every nation under heaven. 6 When they heard this sound, a crowd came together in bewilderment, because each one heard their own language being spoken. 7 Utterly amazed,(G) they asked: “Aren’t all these who are speaking Galileans?(H) 8 Then how is it that each of us hears them in our native language? 9 Parthians, Medes and Elamites; residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia,(I) Pontus(J) and Asia,[b](K) 10 Phrygia(L) and Pamphylia,(M) Egypt and the parts of Libya near Cyrene;(N) visitors from Rome 11 (both Jews and converts to Judaism); Cretans and Arabs—we hear them declaring the wonders of God in our own tongues!” 12 Amazed and perplexed, they asked one another, “What does this mean?”
13 Some, however, made fun of them and said, “They have had too much wine.”(O)
Peter Addresses the Crowd
14 Then Peter stood up with the Eleven, raised his voice and addressed the crowd: “Fellow Jews and all of you who live in Jerusalem, let me explain this to you; listen carefully to what I say. 15 These people are not drunk, as you suppose. It’s only nine in the morning!(P) 16 No, this is what was spoken by the prophet Joel:
17 “‘In the last days, God says,
I will pour out my Spirit on all people.(Q)
Your sons and daughters will prophesy,(R)
your young men will see visions,
your old men will dream dreams.
18 Even on my servants, both men and women,
I will pour out my Spirit in those days,
and they will prophesy.(S)
19 I will show wonders in the heavens above
and signs on the earth below,(T)
blood and fire and billows of smoke.
20 The sun will be turned to darkness
and the moon to blood(U)
before the coming of the great and glorious day of the Lord.
21 And everyone who calls

22 “Fellow Israelites, listen to this: Jesus of Nazareth(X) was a man accredited by God to you by miracles, wonders and signs,(Y) which God did among you through him,(Z) as you yourselves know. 23 This man was handed over to you by God’s deliberate plan and foreknowledge;(AA) and you, with the help of wicked men,[d] put him to death by nailing him to the cross.(AB) 24 But God raised him from the dead,(AC) freeing him from the agony of death, because it was impossible for death to keep its hold on him.(AD) 25 David said about him:
“‘I saw the Lord always before me.
Because he is at my right hand,
I will not be shaken.
26 Therefore my heart is glad and my tongue rejoices;
my body also will rest in hope,
27 because you will not abandon me to the realm of the dead,
you will not let your holy one see decay.(AE)
28 You have made known to me the paths of life;

29 “Fellow Israelites,(AG) I can tell you confidently that the patriarch(AH) David died and was buried,(AI) and his tomb is here(AJ) to this day. 30 But he was a prophet and knew that God had promised him on oath that he would place one of his descendants on his throne.(AK) 31 Seeing what was to come, he spoke of the resurrection of the Messiah, that he was not abandoned to the realm of the dead, nor did his body see decay.(AL) 32 God has raised this Jesus to life,(AM) and we are all witnesses(AN) of it. 33 Exalted(AO) to the right hand of God,(AP) he has received from the Father(AQ) the promised Holy Spirit(AR) and has poured out(AS) what you now see and hear. 34 For David did not ascend to heaven, and yet he said,
“‘The Lord said to my Lord:

37 When the people heard this, they were cut to the heart and said to Peter and the other apostles, “Brothers, what shall we do?”(AW)
38 Peter replied, “Repent and be baptized,(AX) every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins.(AY) And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.(AZ) 39 The promise is for you and your children(BA) and for all who are far off(BB)—for all whom the Lord our God will call.”
40 With many other words he warned them; and he pleaded with them, “Save yourselves from this corrupt generation.”(BC) 41 Those who accepted his message were baptized, and about three thousand were added to their number(BD) that day.
The Fellowship of the Believers
42 They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching(BE) and to fellowship, to the breaking of bread(BF) and to prayer.(BG) 43 Everyone was filled with awe at the many wonders and signs performed by the apostles.(BH) 44 All the believers were together and had everything in common.(BI) 45 They sold property and possessions to give to anyone who had need.(BJ) 46 Every day they continued to meet together in the temple courts.(BK) They broke bread(BL) in their homes and ate together with glad and sincere hearts, 47 praising God and enjoying the favor of all the people.(BM) And the Lord added to their number(BN) daily those who were being saved.
