A terceira viagem missionária de Paulo. Paulo prega o evangelho em Éfeso. Tumulto excitado por Demétrio
19 E sucedeu que, enquanto Apolo estava em Corinto, Paulo, tendo passado por todas as regiões superiores, chegou a Éfeso e, achando ali alguns discípulos, 2 disse-lhes: Recebestes vós já o Espírito Santo quando crestes? E eles disseram-lhe: Nós nem ainda ouvimos que haja Espírito Santo. 3 Perguntou-lhes, então: Em que sois batizados, então? E eles disseram: No batismo de João. 4 Mas Paulo disse: Certamente João batizou com o batismo do arrependimento, dizendo ao povo que cresse no que após ele havia de vir, isto é, em Jesus Cristo. 5 E os que ouviram foram batizados em nome do Senhor Jesus. 6 E, impondo-lhes Paulo as mãos, veio sobre eles o Espírito Santo; e falavam línguas e profetizavam. 7 Estes eram, ao todo, uns doze varões.
8 E, entrando na sinagoga, falou ousadamente por espaço de três meses, disputando e persuadindo-os acerca do Reino de Deus. 9 Mas, como alguns deles se endurecessem e não obedecessem, falando mal do Caminho perante a multidão, retirou-se deles e separou os discípulos, disputando todos os dias na escola de um certo Tirano. 10 E durou isto por espaço de dois anos, de tal maneira que todos os que habitavam na Ásia ouviram a palavra do Senhor Jesus, tanto judeus como gregos. 11 E Deus, pelas mãos de Paulo, fazia maravilhas extraordinárias, 12 de sorte que até os lenços e aventais se levavam do seu corpo aos enfermos, e as enfermidades fugiam deles, e os espíritos malignos saíam. 13 E alguns dos exorcistas judeus, ambulantes, tentavam invocar o nome do Senhor Jesus sobre os que tinham espíritos malignos, dizendo: Esconjuro-vos por Jesus, a quem Paulo prega. 14 Os que faziam isto eram sete filhos de Ceva, judeu, principal dos sacerdotes. 15 Respondendo, porém, o espírito maligno, disse: Conheço a Jesus e bem sei quem é Paulo; mas vós, quem sois? 16 E, saltando neles o homem que tinha o espírito maligno e assenhoreando-se de dois, pôde mais do que eles; de tal maneira que, nus e feridos, fugiram daquela casa. 17 E foi isto notório a todos os que habitavam em Éfeso, tanto judeus como gregos; e caiu temor sobre todos eles, e o nome do Senhor Jesus era engrandecido. 18 Muitos dos que tinham crido vinham, confessando e publicando os seus feitos. 19 Também muitos dos que seguiam artes mágicas trouxeram os seus livros e os queimaram na presença de todos, e, feita a conta do seu preço, acharam que montava a cinquenta mil peças de prata. 20 Assim, a palavra do Senhor crescia poderosamente e prevalecia.
21 E, cumpridas estas coisas, Paulo propôs, em espírito, ir a Jerusalém, passando pela Macedônia e pela Acaia, dizendo: Depois que houver estado ali, importa-me ver também Roma. 22 E, enviando à Macedônia dois daqueles que o serviam, Timóteo e Erasto, ficou ele por algum tempo na Ásia.
23 Naquele mesmo tempo, houve um não pequeno alvoroço acerca do Caminho. 24 Porque um certo ourives da prata, por nome Demétrio, que fazia, de prata, nichos de Diana, dava não pouco lucro aos artífices, 25 aos quais, havendo-os ajuntado com os oficiais de obras semelhantes, disse: Varões, vós bem sabeis que deste ofício temos a nossa prosperidade; 26 e bem vedes e ouvis que não só em Éfeso, mas até quase em toda a Ásia, este Paulo tem convencido e afastado uma grande multidão, dizendo que não são deuses os que se fazem com as mãos. 27 Não somente há o perigo de que a nossa profissão caia em descrédito, mas também de que o próprio templo da grande deusa Diana seja estimado em nada, vindo a majestade daquela que toda a Ásia e o mundo veneram a ser destruída.
28 Ouvindo isto, encheram-se de ira e clamaram, dizendo: Grande é a Diana dos efésios! 29 E encheu-se de confusão toda a cidade, e unânimes correram ao teatro, arrebatando a Gaio e a Aristarco, macedônios, companheiros de Paulo na viagem. 30 E, querendo Paulo apresentar-se ao povo, não lho permitiram os discípulos. 31 Também alguns dos principais da Ásia, que eram seus amigos, lhe rogaram que não se apresentasse no teatro. 32 Uns, pois, clamavam de uma maneira, outros, de outra, porque o ajuntamento era confuso; e os mais deles não sabiam por que causa se tinham ajuntado. 33 Então, tiraram Alexandre dentre a multidão, impelindo-o os judeus para diante; e Alexandre, acenando com a mão, queria dar razão disto ao povo. 34 Mas, quando conheceram que era judeu, todos unanimemente levantaram a voz, clamando por espaço de quase duas horas: Grande é a Diana dos efésios! 35 Então, o escrivão da cidade, tendo apaziguado a multidão, disse: Varões efésios, qual é o homem que não sabe que a cidade dos efésios é a guardadora do templo da grande deusa Diana e da imagem que desceu de Júpiter? 36 Ora, não podendo isto ser contraditado, convém que vos aplaqueis e nada façais temerariamente; 37 porque estes homens que aqui trouxestes nem são sacrílegos nem blasfemam da vossa deusa. 38 Mas, se Demétrio e os artífices que estão com ele têm alguma coisa contra alguém, há audiências e há procônsules; que se acusem uns aos outros. 39 Mas, se alguma outra coisa demandais, averiguar-se-á em legítimo ajuntamento. 40 Na verdade, até corremos perigo de que, por hoje, sejamos acusados de sedição, não havendo causa alguma com que possamos justificar este concurso. 41 E, tendo dito isto, despediu o ajuntamento.

Paul at Ephesus
19 And it happened, while (A)Apollos was at Corinth, that Paul, having passed through (B)the upper regions, came to Ephesus. And finding some disciples 2 he said to them, “Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you believed?”
So they said to him, (C)“We have not so much as heard whether there is a Holy Spirit.”
3 And he said to them, “Into what then were you baptized?”
So they said, (D)“Into John’s baptism.”
4 Then Paul said, (E)“John indeed baptized with a baptism of repentance, saying to the people that they should believe on Him who would come after him, that is, on Christ Jesus.”
5 When they heard this, they were baptized (F)in the name of the Lord Jesus. 6 And when Paul had (G)laid hands on them, the Holy Spirit came upon them, and (H)they spoke with tongues and prophesied. 7 Now the men were about twelve in all.
8 (I)And he went into the synagogue and spoke boldly for three months, reasoning and persuading (J)concerning the things of the kingdom of God. 9 But (K)when some were hardened and did not believe, but spoke evil (L)of the Way before the multitude, he departed from them and withdrew the disciples, reasoning daily in the school of Tyrannus. 10 And (M)this continued for two years, so that all who dwelt in Asia heard the word of the Lord Jesus, both Jews and Greeks.
Miracles Glorify Christ
11 Now (N)God worked unusual miracles by the hands of Paul, 12 (O)so that even handkerchiefs or aprons were brought from his body to the sick, and the diseases left them and the evil spirits went out of them. 13 (P)Then some of the itinerant Jewish exorcists (Q)took it upon themselves to call the name of the Lord Jesus over those who had evil spirits, saying, [a]“We [b]exorcise you by the Jesus whom Paul (R)preaches.” 14 Also there were seven sons of Sceva, a Jewish chief priest, who did so.
15 And the evil spirit answered and said, “Jesus I know, and Paul I know; but who are you?”
16 Then the man in whom the evil spirit was leaped on them, [c]overpowered them, and prevailed against [d]them, so that they fled out of that house naked and wounded. 17 This became known both to all Jews and Greeks dwelling in Ephesus; and (S)fear fell on them all, and the name of the Lord Jesus was magnified. 18 And many who had believed came (T)confessing and telling their deeds. 19 Also, many of those who had practiced magic brought their books together and burned them in the sight of all. And they counted up the value of them, and it totaled fifty thousand pieces of silver. 20 (U)So the word of the Lord grew mightily and prevailed.
The Riot at Ephesus
21 (V)When these things were accomplished, Paul (W)purposed in the Spirit, when he had passed through (X)Macedonia and Achaia, to go to Jerusalem, saying, “After I have been there, (Y)I must also see Rome.” 22 So he sent into Macedonia two of those who ministered to him, (Z)Timothy and (AA)Erastus, but he himself stayed in Asia for a time.
23 And (AB)about that time there arose a great commotion about (AC)the Way. 24 For a certain man named Demetrius, a silversmith, who made silver shrines of [e]Diana, brought (AD)no small profit to the craftsmen. 25 He called them together with the workers of similar occupation, and said: “Men, you know that we have our prosperity by this trade. 26 Moreover you see and hear that not only at Ephesus, but throughout almost all Asia, this Paul has persuaded and turned away many people, saying that (AE)they are not gods which are made with hands. 27 So not only is this trade of ours in danger of falling into disrepute, but also the temple of the great goddess Diana may be despised and [f]her magnificence destroyed, whom all Asia and the world worship.”
28 Now when they heard this, they were full of wrath and cried out, saying, “Great is Diana of the Ephesians!” 29 So the whole city was filled with confusion, and rushed into the theater with one accord, having seized (AF)Gaius and (AG)Aristarchus, Macedonians, Paul’s travel companions. 30 And when Paul wanted to go in to the people, the disciples would not allow him. 31 Then some of the [g]officials of Asia, who were his friends, sent to him pleading that he would not venture into the theater. 32 Some therefore cried one thing and some another, for the assembly was confused, and most of them did not know why they had come together. 33 And they drew Alexander out of the multitude, the Jews putting him forward. And (AH)Alexander (AI)motioned with his hand, and wanted to make his defense to the people. 34 But when they found out that he was a Jew, all with one voice cried out for about two hours, “Great is Diana of the Ephesians!”
35 And when the city clerk had quieted the crowd, he said: “Men of Ephesus, what man is there who does not know that the city of the Ephesians is temple guardian of the great goddess [h]Diana, and of the image which fell down from [i]Zeus? 36 Therefore, since these things cannot be denied, you ought to be quiet and do nothing rashly. 37 For you have brought these men here who are neither robbers of temples nor blasphemers of [j]your goddess. 38 Therefore, if Demetrius and his fellow craftsmen have a [k]case against anyone, the courts are open and there are proconsuls. Let them bring charges against one another. 39 But if you have any other inquiry to make, it shall be determined in the lawful assembly. 40 For we are in danger of being [l]called in question for today’s uproar, there being no reason which we may give to account for this disorderly gathering.” 41 And when he had said these things, he dismissed the assembly.

Si Pablo sa Efeso
19 Samantalang si Apolos ay nasa Corinto, si Pablo ay dumaan sa mga dakong loob ng lupain at nakarating sa Efeso. Doon ay nakatagpo siya ng ilang mga alagad.
2 At sinabi niya sa kanila, “Tinanggap ba ninyo ang Espiritu Santo nang kayo'y nanampalataya?”
Sinabi nila, “Hindi, ni hindi pa namin narinig na may Espiritu Santo.”
3 Kaya't sinabi niya, “Kung gayo'y sa ano kayo binautismuhan?”
Sinabi nila, “Sa bautismo ni Juan.”
4 Sinabi(A) ni Pablo, “Nagbautismo si Juan ng bautismo ng pagsisisi, na sinasabi sa mga tao na sila'y manampalataya sa darating na kasunod niya, samakatuwid ay kay Jesus.”
5 Nang kanilang marinig ito, sila'y binautismuhan sa pangalan ng Panginoong Jesus.
6 Nang maipatong na ni Pablo sa kanila ang kanyang mga kamay, bumaba sa kanila ang Espiritu Santo at sila'y nagsalita ng mga wika at nagpropesiya.
7 Silang lahat ay may labindalawang lalaki.
8 Siya'y pumasok sa sinagoga, at sa loob ng tatlong buwan ay nagsalita ng may katapangan, na nangangatuwiran at nanghihikayat tungkol sa mga bagay na nauukol sa kaharian ng Diyos.
9 Ngunit nang magmatigas ang ilan at ayaw maniwala, na nagsasalita ng masama tungkol sa Daan sa harapan ng kapulungan, kanyang iniwan sila at isinama ang mga alagad, at nakipagtalo araw-araw sa bulwagan ni Tiranno.[a]
10 At ito'y nagpatuloy sa loob ng dalawang taon, kaya't ang lahat ng mga naninirahan sa Asia ay nakarinig ng salita ng Panginoon, ang mga Judio at gayundin ang mga Griyego.
Ang mga Anak ni Eskeva
11 Gumawa ang Diyos ng mga di-pangkaraniwang himala sa pamamagitan ng mga kamay ni Pablo,
12 kaya't nang ang mga panyo o mga tapis na napadikit sa kanyang katawan ay dinala sa mga maysakit, nawala sa kanila ang mga sakit, at lumabas sa kanila ang masasamang espiritu.
13 Ngunit may ilang mga Judiong pagala-gala na nagpapalayas ng masasamang espiritu ang nangahas na bigkasin ang pangalan ng Panginoong Jesus sa mga may masasamang espiritu, na sinasabi, “Inuutusan ko kayo sa pamamagitan ni Jesus na ipinangangaral ni Pablo.”
14 Pitong anak na lalaki ng isang pinakapunong paring Judio, na ang pangalan ay Eskeva, ang gumagawa nito.
15 Ngunit sinagot sila ng masamang espiritu, “Kilala ko si Jesus, at kilala ko si Pablo; ngunit sino kayo?”
16 At ang taong kinaroroonan ng masamang espiritu ay lumukso sa kanila, at silang lahat ay dinaig niya, kaya tumakas sila sa bahay na iyon na mga hubad at sugatan.
17 Nalaman ito ng lahat ng naninirahan sa Efeso, mga Judio at gayundin ng mga Griyego; at sinidlan silang lahat ng takot, at pinuri ang pangalan ng Panginoong Jesus.
18 Marami rin naman sa mga nanampalataya ang dumating na ipinahahayag at ibinubunyag ang kanilang mga gawain.
19 Marami sa mga gumagamit ng mga salamangka ay tinipon ang kanilang mga aklat at sinunog sa paningin ng madla; at kanilang binilang ang halaga niyon, at napag-alamang may limampung libong pirasong pilak.
20 Sa gayo'y lumago at lubos na nanaig ang salita ng Panginoon.
Nagkagulo sa Efeso
21 Pagkatapos mangyari ang mga bagay na ito, ipinasiya ni Pablo sa Espiritu, na dumaan sa Macedonia at sa Acaia, at pumaroon sa Jerusalem, na sinasabi, “Pagkapanggaling ko roon, ay kinakailangang makita ko rin ang Roma.”
22 Isinugo niya sa Macedonia ang dalawa sa naglilingkod sa kanya, sina Timoteo at Erasto, samantalang siya ay tumigil nang ilang panahon sa Asia.
23 Nang panahong iyon ay nagkaroon ng malaking gulo tungkol sa Daan.
24 Sapagkat may isang tao na ang pangalan ay Demetrio, isang panday-pilak na gumagawa ng mga dambanang pilak ni Artemis, ay nagbibigay ng hindi maliit na pinagkakakitaan sa mga panday.
25 Ang mga ito ay kanyang tinipon pati ang mga manggagawa ng mga gayong hanapbuhay, at sinabi, “Mga ginoo, alam ninyo na mula sa gawaing ito ay mayroon tayong pakinabang.
26 Inyo ring nakikita at naririnig na hindi lamang sa Efeso, kundi halos sa buong Asia, na ang Pablong ito ay nakaakit at naglayo ng napakaraming tao, na sinasabing hindi mga diyos ang ginagawa ng mga kamay.
27 At may panganib na hindi lamang mawalan ng dangal ang hanapbuhay nating ito, kundi ang templo ng dakilang diyosang si Artemis ay mawalan din ng halaga. At siya ay maaari pang matanggal sa kanyang kadakilaan, siya na sinasamba ng buong Asia at ng sanlibutan.”
28 Nang marinig nila ito ay napuno sila ng galit at nagsigawan, “Dakila si Artemis ng mga taga-Efeso!”
29 Napuno ng kaguluhan ang lunsod at sama-sama nilang nilusob ang tanghalan, at sinunggaban sina Gayo at Aristarco, mga taga-Macedonia, na kasama ni Pablo sa paglalakbay.
30 Nais ni Pablo na pumunta sa mga tao ngunit hindi siya pinayagan ng mga alagad.
31 Maging ang ilan sa mga pinuno sa Asia, na kanyang mga kaibigan, ay nagpasugo sa kanya at siya'y pinakiusapang huwag mangahas sa tanghalan.
32 Samantala, ang iba ay sumisigaw ng isang bagay, at ang ilan ay iba naman, sapagkat ang kapulungan ay nasa kaguluhan at hindi nalalaman ng karamihan kung bakit sila'y nagkakatipon.
33 Ilan sa maraming tao ang nag-udyok kay Alejandro at pinapunta ng mga Judio sa unahan. At sumenyas si Alejandro na nais niyang ipagtanggol ang sarili sa mga taong-bayan.
34 Ngunit nang makilala nila na siya'y isang Judio, sa loob ng halos dalawang oras silang lahat ay nagsigawan na may isang tinig, “Dakila si Artemis ng mga taga-Efeso!”
35 Nang mapatahimik na ng kalihim ng bayan ang maraming tao, ay kanyang sinabi, “Mga lalaking taga-Efeso, sino sa mga tao ang hindi nakakaalam na ang lunsod ng mga taga-Efeso ay tagapag-ingat ng templo ng dakilang Artemis, at ng banal na batong nahulog mula sa langit?
36 Yamang hindi maikakaila ang mga bagay na ito, dapat kayong huminahon at huwag gumawa ng anumang bagay na padalus-dalos.
37 Dinala ninyo rito ang mga taong ito, na hindi mga magnanakaw sa templo ni mga lumalapastangan man sa ating diyosa.
38 Kaya't kung si Demetrio at ang mga panday na kasama niya ay mayroong reklamo laban sa kanino man, bukas ang mga hukuman, at may mga proconsul; hayaan ninyong doon magharap ng reklamo ang isa't isa.
39 Ngunit kung may iba pang bagay kayong hinahangad, ito ay lulutasin sa karaniwang kapulungan.
40 Sapagkat nanganganib tayong maparatangang nanggugulo sa araw na ito, palibhasa'y wala tayong maibibigay na dahilan upang bigyang-katuwiran ang gulong ito.”
41 Nang masabi na niya ang mga bagay na ito, pinaalis niya ang kapulungan.
