Paulus i Efesus
19 Medan Apollos var i Korint kom Paulus ner till Efesus, sedan han rest genom höglandet. Där träffade han några lärjungar, 2 och han frågade dem: "Tog ni emot den helige Ande när ni kom till tro?" De svarade honom: "Nej, vi har inte ens hört att den helige Ande har blivit utgjuten."[a] 3 Då frågade han: "Vilket dop blev ni döpta med?" De svarade: "Med Johannes dop." 4 Paulus sade: "Johannes döpte med omvändelsens dop och uppmanade folket att tro på den som kom efter honom, det vill säga på Jesus." 5 När de fick höra detta döptes de i Herren Jesu namn. 6 Och när Paulus lade händerna på dem, kom den helige Ande över dem, och de talade med tungor och profeterade. 7 Tillsammans var det omkring tolv män.
8 Sedan gick han in i synagogan och under tre månader predikade han frimodigt. Han samtalade med dem och försökte övertyga dem om det som hör till Guds rike. 9 Men där fanns några som förhärdade sig och inte ville tro utan talade illa om 'den vägen', så att alla hörde det. Då lämnade han dem och tog lärjungarna med sig, och varje dag höll han samtal i Tyrannus hörsal. 10 Detta pågick under två år, så att alla som bodde i Asien, judar och greker, fick höra Herrens ord. 11 Gud gjorde ovanliga under genom Paulus händer, 12 så att man till och med tog dukar och plagg som varit i beröring med hans hud och lade på de sjuka, och sjukdomarna lämnade dem och de onda andarna for ut.
13 Några kringvandrande judiska andeutdrivare tog sig också för att uttala Herren Jesu namn över dem som hade onda andar. De sade: "Jag besvär er vid den Jesus som Paulus predikar." 14 Det var sju söner till en viss Skevas, en judisk överstepräst, som gjorde så. 15 Men den onde anden svarade dem: "Jesus känner jag till, och vem Paulus är vet jag, men vilka är ni?" 16 Och mannen som hade den onde anden kastade sig över dem, övermannade alla och misshandlade dem så svårt att de måste fly ut ur huset, nakna och blodiga. 17 Detta fick alla i Efesus veta, både judar och greker, och fruktan kom över dem alla, och Herren Jesu namn blev prisat. 18 Många av dem som trodde kom och bekände öppet vad de tidigare hade gjort. 19 Åtskilliga av dem som hade bedrivit trolldom samlade ihop sina böcker och brände upp dem offentligt. Man räknade ut vad de var värda och kom fram till femtiotusen silverdrakmer.[b] 20 På detta sätt hade ordet genom Herrens kraft framgång och visade sin styrka.
Oroligheter i Efesus
21 När detta var slutfört bestämde sig Paulus för att genom Makedonien och Akaja resa till Jerusalem. Han sade: "Och när jag har varit där måste jag också besöka Rom." 22 Han sände två av sina medhjälpare, Timoteus och Erastus, till Makedonien och stannade själv en tid i Asien.
23 Vid den tiden uppstod det stor oro med anledning av 'den vägen'. 24 En silversmed som hette Demetrius, tillverkade Artemistempel[c] av silver och skaffade därmed hantverkarna stora inkomster. 25 Nu kallade han samman dem och sådana som hade liknande arbeten och sade: "Ni män, ni vet att vi har vårt välstånd av detta arbete. 26 Och nu ser ni och hör hur den där Paulus har vilselett en massa människor, inte bara i Efesus utan i nästan hela Asien, med sitt tal om att gudar som är tillverkade av händer inte är några gudar. 27 Det är fara värt inte endast att vårt hantverk får dåligt rykte utan också att den stora gudinnan Artemis tempel förlorar sitt anseende, och att den gudinna som hela Asien, ja, hela världen dyrkar, mister sin gudomliga storhet."
28 När de hörde detta blev de ursinniga och skrek: "Stor är efesiernas Artemis!"[d] 29 Hela staden kom i uppror, och folk rusade alla på en gång till teatern och släpade med sig Gajus och Aristarkus, två makedonier som var Paulus följeslagare. 30 Paulus ville gå in till folket men hindrades av lärjungarna. 31 Några asiarker[e] som var hans vänner skickade också bud till honom och bad att han inte skulle ge sig in på teatern. 32 Där skrek några ett, andra något annat. Folkmassan var i uppror, och de flesta visste inte ens varför de hade samlats. 33 Några ur hopen förklarade för Alexander vad saken gällde, och judarna skickade fram honom. Han gav tecken med handen och ville hålla ett försvarstal inför folket. 34 Men när de märkte att han var jude, ropade de alla på en gång i ett par timmar: "Stor är efesiernas Artemis!"
35 Men stadens sekreterare lugnade folket och sade: "Efesier, finns det någon enda människa som inte känner till att efesiernas stad är vårdare av den stora Artemis tempel och hennes bild som har fallit ner från himlen?[f] 36 Eftersom ingen kan neka till detta, bör ni hålla er lugna och inte göra något förhastat. 37 Ni har fört hit de här männen som varken har rånat tempel eller hädat vår gudinna. 38 Om nu Demetrius och hans hantverkare vill föra talan mot någon, så hålls det rättegångar och finns det landshövdingar. Inför sådana skall de anklaga varandra. 39 Och om det är något mer ni vill ta upp, skall det avgöras i den lagliga folkförsamlingen. 40 På grund av det som har hänt i dag riskerar vi att bli anklagade för uppror. Vi har ju inte något skäl att anföra när vi skall stå till svars för dessa oroligheter." Och efter att ha sagt det upplöste han folksamlingen.

Paul in Ephesus
19 While Apollos(A) was at Corinth,(B) Paul took the road through the interior and arrived at Ephesus.(C) There he found some disciples 2 and asked them, “Did you receive the Holy Spirit(D) when[a] you believed?”
They answered, “No, we have not even heard that there is a Holy Spirit.”
3 So Paul asked, “Then what baptism did you receive?”
“John’s baptism,” they replied.
4 Paul said, “John’s baptism(E) was a baptism of repentance. He told the people to believe in the one coming after him, that is, in Jesus.”(F) 5 On hearing this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.(G) 6 When Paul placed his hands on them,(H) the Holy Spirit came on them,(I) and they spoke in tongues[b](J) and prophesied. 7 There were about twelve men in all.
8 Paul entered the synagogue(K) and spoke boldly there for three months, arguing persuasively about the kingdom of God.(L) 9 But some of them(M) became obstinate; they refused to believe and publicly maligned the Way.(N) So Paul left them. He took the disciples(O) with him and had discussions daily in the lecture hall of Tyrannus. 10 This went on for two years,(P) so that all the Jews and Greeks who lived in the province of Asia(Q) heard the word of the Lord.(R)
11 God did extraordinary miracles(S) through Paul, 12 so that even handkerchiefs and aprons that had touched him were taken to the sick, and their illnesses were cured(T) and the evil spirits left them.
13 Some Jews who went around driving out evil spirits(U) tried to invoke the name of the Lord Jesus over those who were demon-possessed. They would say, “In the name of the Jesus(V) whom Paul preaches, I command you to come out.” 14 Seven sons of Sceva, a Jewish chief priest, were doing this. 15 One day the evil spirit answered them, “Jesus I know, and Paul I know about, but who are you?” 16 Then the man who had the evil spirit jumped on them and overpowered them all. He gave them such a beating that they ran out of the house naked and bleeding.
17 When this became known to the Jews and Greeks living in Ephesus,(W) they were all seized with fear,(X) and the name of the Lord Jesus was held in high honor. 18 Many of those who believed now came and openly confessed what they had done. 19 A number who had practiced sorcery brought their scrolls together and burned them publicly. When they calculated the value of the scrolls, the total came to fifty thousand drachmas.[c] 20 In this way the word of the Lord(Y) spread widely and grew in power.(Z)
21 After all this had happened, Paul decided[d] to go to Jerusalem,(AA) passing through Macedonia(AB) and Achaia.(AC) “After I have been there,” he said, “I must visit Rome also.”(AD) 22 He sent two of his helpers,(AE) Timothy(AF) and Erastus,(AG) to Macedonia, while he stayed in the province of Asia(AH) a little longer.
The Riot in Ephesus
23 About that time there arose a great disturbance about the Way.(AI) 24 A silversmith named Demetrius, who made silver shrines of Artemis, brought in a lot of business for the craftsmen there. 25 He called them together, along with the workers in related trades, and said: “You know, my friends, that we receive a good income from this business.(AJ) 26 And you see and hear how this fellow Paul has convinced and led astray large numbers of people here in Ephesus(AK) and in practically the whole province of Asia.(AL) He says that gods made by human hands are no gods at all.(AM) 27 There is danger not only that our trade will lose its good name, but also that the temple of the great goddess Artemis will be discredited; and the goddess herself, who is worshiped throughout the province of Asia and the world, will be robbed of her divine majesty.”
28 When they heard this, they were furious and began shouting: “Great is Artemis of the Ephesians!”(AN) 29 Soon the whole city was in an uproar. The people seized Gaius(AO) and Aristarchus,(AP) Paul’s traveling companions from Macedonia,(AQ) and all of them rushed into the theater together. 30 Paul wanted to appear before the crowd, but the disciples(AR) would not let him. 31 Even some of the officials of the province, friends of Paul, sent him a message begging him not to venture into the theater.
32 The assembly was in confusion: Some were shouting one thing, some another.(AS) Most of the people did not even know why they were there. 33 The Jews in the crowd pushed Alexander to the front, and they shouted instructions to him. He motioned(AT) for silence in order to make a defense before the people. 34 But when they realized he was a Jew, they all shouted in unison for about two hours: “Great is Artemis of the Ephesians!”(AU)
35 The city clerk quieted the crowd and said: “Fellow Ephesians,(AV) doesn’t all the world know that the city of Ephesus is the guardian of the temple of the great Artemis and of her image, which fell from heaven? 36 Therefore, since these facts are undeniable, you ought to calm down and not do anything rash. 37 You have brought these men here, though they have neither robbed temples(AW) nor blasphemed our goddess. 38 If, then, Demetrius and his fellow craftsmen(AX) have a grievance against anybody, the courts are open and there are proconsuls.(AY) They can press charges. 39 If there is anything further you want to bring up, it must be settled in a legal assembly. 40 As it is, we are in danger of being charged with rioting because of what happened today. In that case we would not be able to account for this commotion, since there is no reason for it.” 41 After he had said this, he dismissed the assembly.

19 Y ACONTECIÓ que entre tanto que Apolos estaba en Corinto, Pablo, andadas las regiones superiores, vino á Efeso, y hallando ciertos discípulos,
2 Díjoles: ¿Habéis recibido el Espíritu Santo después que creísteis? Y ellos le dijeron: Antes ni aun hemos oído si hay Espíritu Santo.
3 Entonces dijo: ¿En qué pues sois bautizados? Y ellos dijeron: En el bautismo de Juan.
4 Y dijo Pablo: Juan bautizó con bautismo de arrepentimiento, diciendo al pueblo que creyesen en el que había de venir después de él, es á saber, en Jesús el Cristo.
5 Oído que hubieron esto, fueron bautizados en el nombre del Señor Jesús.
6 Y habiéndoles impuesto Pablo las manos, vino sobre ellos el Espíritu Santo; y hablaban en lenguas, y profetizaban.
7 Y eran en todos como unos doce hombres.
8 Y entrando él dentro de la sinagoga, hablaba libremente por espacio de tres meses, disputando y persuadiendo del reino de Dios.
9 Mas endureciéndose algunos y no creyendo, maldiciendo el Camino delante de la multitud, apartándose Pablo de ellos separó á los discípulos, disputando cada día en la escuela de un cierto Tyranno.
10 Y esto fué por espacio de dos años; de manera que todos los que habitaban en Asia, Judíos y Griegos, oyeron la palabra del Señor Jesús.
11 Y hacía Dios singulares maravillas por manos de Pablo:
12 De tal manera que aun se llevaban sobre los enfermos los sudarios y los pañuelos de su cuerpo, y las enfermedades se iban de ellos, y los malos espíritus salían de ellos.
13 Y algunos de los Judíos, exorcistas vagabundos, tentaron á invocar el nombre del Señor Jesús sobre los que tenían espíritus malos, diciendo: Os conjuro por Jesús, el que Pablo predica.
14 Y había siete hijos de un tal Sceva, Judío, príncipe de los sacerdotes, que hacían esto.
15 Y respondiendo el espíritu malo, dijo: á Jesús conozco y sé quién es Pablo: mas vosotros ¿quiénes sois?
16 Y el hombre en quien estaba el espíritu malo, saltando en ellos, y enseñoreándose de ellos, pudo más que ellos, de tal manera que huyeron de aquella casa desnudos y heridos.
17 Y esto fué notorio á todos, así Judíos como Griegos, los que habitaban en Efeso: y cayó temor sobre todos ellos, y era ensalzado el nombre del Señor Jesús.
18 Y muchos de los que habían creído, venían, confesando y dando cuenta de sus hechos.
19 Asimismo muchos de los que habían practicado vanas artes, trajeron los libros, y los quemaron delante de todos; y echada la cuenta del precio de ellos, hallaron ser cincuenta mil denarios.
20 Así crecía poderosamente la palabra del Señor, y prevalecía.
21 Y acabadas estas cosas, se propuso Pablo en espíritu partir á Jerusalem, después de andada Macedonia y Acaya, diciendo: Después que hubiere estado allá, me será menester ver también á Roma.
22 Y enviando á Macedonia á dos de los que le ayudaban, Timoteo y Erasto, él se estuvo por algún tiempo en Asia.
23 Entonces hubo un alboroto no pequeño acerca del Camino.
24 Porque un platero llamado Demetrio, el cual hacía de plata templecillos de Diana, daba á los artífices no poca ganancia;
25 A los cuales, reunidos con los oficiales de semejante oficio, dijo: Varones, sabéis que de este oficio tenemos ganancia;
26 Y veis y oís que este Pablo, no solamente en Efeso, sino á muchas gentes de casi toda el Asia, ha apartado con persuasión, diciendo, que no son dioses los que se hacen con las manos.
27 Y no solamente hay peligro de que este negocio se nos vuelva en reproche, sino también que el templo de la gran diosa Diana sea estimado en nada, y comience á ser destruída su majestad, la cual honra toda el Asia y el mundo.
28 Oídas estas cosas, llenáronse de ira, y dieron alarido diciendo: ¡Grande es Diana de los Efesios!
29 Y la ciudad se llenó de confusión; y unánimes se arrojaron al teatro, arrebatando á Gayo y á Aristarco, Macedonios, compañeros de Pablo.
30 Y queriendo Pablo salir al pueblo, los discípulos no le dejaron.
31 También algunos de los principales de Asia, que eran sus amigos, enviaron á él rogando que no se presentase en el teatro.
32 Y otros gritaban otra cosa; porque la concurrencia estaba confusa, y los más no sabían por qué se habían juntado.
33 Y sacaron de entre la multitud á Alejandro, empujándole los Judíos. Entonces Alejandro, pedido silencio con la mano, quería dar razón al pueblo.
34 Mas como conocieron que era Judío, fué hecha una voz de todos, que gritaron casi por dos horas: ¡Grande es Diana de los Efesios!
35 Entonces el escribano, apaciguado que hubo la gente, dijo: Varones Efesios ¿y quién hay de los hombres que no sepa que la ciudad de los Efesios es honradora de la gran diosa Diana, y de la imagen venida de Júpiter?
36 Así que, pues esto no puede ser contradicho, conviene que os apacigüéis, y que nada hagáis temerariamente;
37 Pues habéis traído á estos hombres, sin ser sacrílegos ni blasfemadores de vuestra diosa.
38 Que si Demetrio y los oficiales que están con él tienen negocio con alguno, audiencias se hacen, y procónsules hay; acúsense los unos á los otros.
39 Y si demandáis alguna otra cosa, en legítima asamblea se pueda decidir.
40 Porque peligro hay de que seamos argüidos de sedición por hoy, no habiendo ninguna causa por la cual podamos dar razón de este concurso. Y habiendo dicho esto, despidió la concurrencia.
