17 保羅和西拉經過暗非波里、亞波羅尼亞,來到帖撒羅尼迦,在那裡有猶太人的會堂。 2 保羅照他的習慣進去,一連三個安息日,根據聖經與他們辯論, 3 講解證明基督必須受害,從死人中復活,說:“我所傳給你們的這位耶穌,就是基督。” 4 他們中間有人給說服了,就附從了保羅和西拉;還有一大群虔誠的希臘人,和不少顯要的婦女。 5 但猶太人嫉妒起來,招聚了一些市井流氓,糾合成群,騷動全城,衝進了耶孫的家,搜索保羅和西拉,要把他們交給民眾。 6 搜索不到他們,就把耶孫和幾個弟兄,拉到地方長官那裡,喊叫著說:“這些擾亂天下的人,也到這裡來了, 7 耶孫卻收留他們。這些人都違背凱撒的法令,說另外還有一個王耶穌。” 8 群眾和地方長官聽見這話,就驚慌起來, 9 取得耶孫和其餘的人簽保後,才放了他們。

Pablo y Silas en Tesalónica
17 Después de pasar por Anfípolis y Apolonia, llegaron a Tesalónica(A), donde había una sinagoga de los judíos. 2 Y Pablo, según su costumbre(B), fue a ellos y por tres días de reposo[a](C) discutió con ellos basándose en las Escrituras(D), 3 explicando[b] y presentando[c] evidencia de que era necesario que el Cristo[d] padeciera(E) y resucitara de entre los muertos(F), y diciendo: Este Jesús, a quien yo os anuncio, es el Cristo[e](G). 4 Algunos de ellos creyeron, y se unieron(H) a Pablo y a Silas(I), juntamente con[f] una gran multitud de griegos(J) temerosos de Dios(K) y muchas[g] de las mujeres principales(L). 5 Pero los judíos, llenos de envidia, llevaron[h] algunos hombres malvados[i] de la plaza pública, organizaron una turba y alborotaron la ciudad(M); y asaltando la casa de Jasón(N), procuraban sacarlos al pueblo. 6 Al no encontrarlos, arrastraron a Jasón y a algunos de los hermanos ante las autoridades de la ciudad, gritando: Esos que han trastornado al mundo[j](O) han venido acá también(P); 7 y Jasón los[k] ha recibido(Q), y todos ellos actúan contra los decretos del César, diciendo que hay otro rey, Jesús(R). 8 Y alborotaron a la multitud y a las autoridades de la ciudad que oían esto. 9 Pero después de recibir una fianza de Jasón(S) y de los otros, los soltaron.

10 Enseguida los hermanos(T) enviaron de noche a Pablo y a Silas(U) a Berea(V), los cuales, al llegar, fueron a la sinagoga de los judíos(W). 11 Estos eran más nobles que los de Tesalónica(X), pues[l] recibieron la palabra con toda solicitud, escudriñando diariamente las Escrituras, para ver si estas cosas eran así. 12 Por eso muchos de ellos creyeron(Y), así como también un buen número de[m] griegos, hombres y mujeres(Z) de distinción(AA). 13 Pero cuando los judíos de Tesalónica(AB) supieron que la palabra de Dios había sido proclamada por Pablo también en Berea(AC), fueron también allá para agitar y alborotar a las multitudes. 14 Entonces los hermanos(AD) inmediatamente enviaron a Pablo para que fuera hasta el mar; pero Silas(AE) y Timoteo(AF) se quedaron allí. 15 Los que conducían a Pablo(AG) lo llevaron hasta Atenas(AH); y después de recibir órdenes de que Silas y Timoteo(AI) se unieran[n] a él(AJ) lo más pronto posible, partieron.

Y algunos decían: ¿Qué quiere decir este palabrero[p](AN)? Y otros: Parece ser un predicador de divinidades extrañas[q] —porque les predicaba a[r] Jesús y la resurrección(AO). 19 Lo tomaron(AP) y lo llevaron al[s] Areópago[t](AQ), diciendo: ¿Podemos saber qué es esta nueva enseñanza(AR) que proclamas[u]? 20 Porque te oímos decir[v] cosas extrañas; por tanto, queremos saber qué significan. 21 (Pues todos los atenienses y los extranjeros de visita allí(AS), no pasaban el tiempo en otra cosa sino en decir o en oír algo nuevo.) 22 Entonces Pablo poniéndose en pie en medio del Areópago[w], dijo: Varones atenienses(AT), percibo que sois muy religiosos[x](AU) en todo sentido. 23 Porque mientras pasaba y observaba los objetos de vuestra adoración(AV), hallé también un altar con esta inscripción: AL[y] DIOS DESCONOCIDO. Pues lo que vosotros adoráis sin conocer(AW), eso os anuncio yo. 24 El Dios que hizo el mundo y todo lo que en él hay(AX), puesto que es Señor del cielo y de la tierra(AY), no mora en templos hechos por manos de hombres(AZ), 25 ni es servido por manos humanas, como si necesitara de algo(BA), puesto que Él da a todos vida y aliento y todas las cosas; 26 y de uno[z] hizo todas las naciones del mundo[aa](BB) para que habitaran sobre toda la faz de la tierra, habiendo determinado sus tiempos señalados y los límites de su habitación(BC), 27 para que buscaran a Dios, si de alguna manera, palpando, le hallen, aunque no está lejos de ninguno de nosotros(BD); 28 porque en Él vivimos, nos movemos y existimos[ab](BE), así como algunos de vuestros mismos poetas han dicho: «Porque también nosotros somos linaje suyo». 29 Siendo, pues, linaje de Dios, no debemos pensar que la naturaleza divina sea semejante a oro, plata o piedra, esculpidos por el[ac] arte y el pensamiento humano(BF). 30 Por tanto, habiendo pasado por alto los tiempos de ignorancia(BG), Dios declara ahora a todos los hombres, en todas partes, que se arrepientan(BH), 31 porque Él ha establecido un día en el cual juzgará(BI) al mundo[ad](BJ) en justicia, por medio de un Hombre(BK) a quien ha designado(BL), habiendo presentado pruebas a todos los hombres al resucitarle[ae] de entre los muertos(BM).
32 Y cuando oyeron de la resurrección de los muertos(BN), algunos se burlaban, pero otros dijeron: Te escucharemos otra[af] vez acerca de esto. 33 Entonces Pablo salió de entre ellos. 34 Pero algunos se unieron a él y creyeron, entre los cuales estaban[ag] Dionisio el areopagita(BO), una mujer llamada Dámaris y otros con ellos.

A Short Ministry in Thessalonica
17 After they passed through Amphipolis and Apollonia, they came to Thessalonica,(A) where there was a Jewish synagogue. 2 As usual, Paul went into the synagogue, and on three Sabbath days reasoned with them from the Scriptures,(B) 3 explaining and proving that it was necessary for the Messiah to suffer and rise from the dead: “This Jesus I am proclaiming to you is the Messiah.”(C) 4 Some of them were persuaded and joined Paul and Silas, including a large number of God-fearing Greeks, as well as a number of the leading women.(D)
Riot in the City
5 But the Jews became jealous, and they brought together some wicked men from the marketplace, formed a mob, and started a riot in the city. Attacking Jason’s house, they searched for them to bring them out to the public assembly.(E) 6 When they did not find them, they dragged Jason and some of the brothers before the city officials, shouting, “These men who have turned the world upside down have come here too, 7 and Jason has welcomed them. They are all acting contrary to Caesar’s decrees,(F) saying that there is another king—Jesus.”(G) 8 The crowd and city officials who heard these things were upset. 9 After taking a security bond from Jason and the others, they released them.
The Bereans Search the Scriptures
10 As soon as it was night, the brothers and sisters sent Paul and Silas away to Berea.(H) Upon arrival, they went into the synagogue of the Jews. 11 The people here were of more noble character than those in Thessalonica, since they received the word with eagerness and examined[a] the Scriptures(I) daily to see if these things were so. 12 Consequently, many of them believed, including a number of the prominent Greek women as well as men. 13 But when the Jews from Thessalonica found out that the word of God had been proclaimed by Paul at Berea, they came there too, agitating and upsetting[b] the crowds. 14 Then the brothers and sisters immediately sent Paul away to go to the coast, but Silas and Timothy(J) stayed on there. 15 Those who escorted Paul brought him as far as Athens, and after receiving instructions for Silas and Timothy to come to him as quickly as possible, they departed.(K)

16 While Paul was waiting for them in Athens, he was deeply distressed when he saw that the city was full of idols. 17 So he reasoned in the synagogue with the Jews and with those who worshiped God, as well as in the marketplace every day with those who happened to be there.(L) 18 Some of the Epicurean and Stoic philosophers also debated with him. Some said, “What is this ignorant show-off[c] trying to say?”
Others replied, “He seems to be a preacher of foreign deities”—because he was telling the good news about Jesus and the resurrection.(M)
19 They took him and brought him to the Areopagus,[d] and said, “May we learn about this new teaching you are presenting?(N) 20 Because what you say sounds strange to us, and we want to know what these things mean.” 21 Now all the Athenians and the foreigners residing there spent their time on nothing else but telling or hearing something new.
The Areopagus Address
22 Paul stood in the middle of the Areopagus and said, “People of Athens! I see that you are extremely religious in every respect. 23 For as I was passing through and observing the objects of your worship, I even found an altar on which was inscribed, ‘To an Unknown God.’ Therefore, what you worship in ignorance, this I proclaim to you. 24 The God who made the world and everything in it(O)—he is Lord of heaven and earth(P)—does not live in shrines made by hands.(Q) 25 Neither is he served by human hands, as though he needed anything,(R) since he himself gives everyone life and breath and all things.(S) 26 From one man[e] he has made every nationality to live over the whole earth and has determined their appointed times and the boundaries of where they live.(T) 27 He did this so that they might seek God, and perhaps they might reach out and find him, though he is not far from each one of us.(U) 28 For in him we live and move and have our being, as even some of your own poets have said, ‘For we are also his offspring.’(V) 29 Since, then, we are God’s offspring, we shouldn’t think that the divine nature is like gold or silver or stone, an image fashioned by human art and imagination.(W)
30 “Therefore, having overlooked(X) the times of ignorance, God now commands all people everywhere to repent, 31 because he has set a day when he is going to judge the world in righteousness by the man he has appointed. He has provided proof of this to everyone by raising him from the dead.”(Y)
32 When they heard about the resurrection of the dead, some began to ridicule him, but others said, “We’d like to hear from you again about this.” 33 So Paul left their presence. 34 However, some people joined him and believed, including Dionysius the Areopagite, a woman named Damaris, and others with them.

New International Version
In Thessalonica
17 When Paul and his companions had passed through Amphipolis and Apollonia, they came to Thessalonica,(A) where there was a Jewish synagogue. 2 As was his custom, Paul went into the synagogue,(B) and on three Sabbath(C) days he reasoned with them from the Scriptures,(D) 3 explaining and proving that the Messiah had to suffer(E) and rise from the dead.(F) “This Jesus I am proclaiming to you is the Messiah,”(G) he said. 4 Some of the Jews were persuaded and joined Paul and Silas,(H) as did a large number of God-fearing Greeks and quite a few prominent women.
5 But other Jews were jealous; so they rounded up some bad characters from the marketplace, formed a mob and started a riot in the city.(I) They rushed to Jason’s(J) house in search of Paul and Silas in order to bring them out to the crowd.[a] 6 But when they did not find them, they dragged(K) Jason and some other believers(L) before the city officials, shouting: “These men who have caused trouble all over the world(M) have now come here,(N) 7 and Jason has welcomed them into his house. They are all defying Caesar’s decrees, saying that there is another king, one called Jesus.”(O) 8 When they heard this, the crowd and the city officials were thrown into turmoil. 9 Then they made Jason(P) and the others post bond and let them go.
In Berea
10 As soon as it was night, the believers sent Paul and Silas(Q) away to Berea.(R) On arriving there, they went to the Jewish synagogue.(S) 11 Now the Berean Jews were of more noble character than those in Thessalonica,(T) for they received the message with great eagerness and examined the Scriptures(U) every day to see if what Paul said was true.(V) 12 As a result, many of them believed, as did also a number of prominent Greek women and many Greek men.(W)
13 But when the Jews in Thessalonica learned that Paul was preaching the word of God at Berea,(X) some of them went there too, agitating the crowds and stirring them up. 14 The believers(Y) immediately sent Paul to the coast, but Silas(Z) and Timothy(AA) stayed at Berea. 15 Those who escorted Paul brought him to Athens(AB) and then left with instructions for Silas and Timothy to join him as soon as possible.(AC)
In Athens
16 While Paul was waiting for them in Athens, he was greatly distressed to see that the city was full of idols. 17 So he reasoned in the synagogue(AD) with both Jews and God-fearing Greeks, as well as in the marketplace day by day with those who happened to be there. 18 A group of Epicurean and Stoic philosophers began to debate with him. Some of them asked, “What is this babbler trying to say?” Others remarked, “He seems to be advocating foreign gods.” They said this because Paul was preaching the good news(AE) about Jesus and the resurrection.(AF) 19 Then they took him and brought him to a meeting of the Areopagus,(AG) where they said to him, “May we know what this new teaching(AH) is that you are presenting? 20 You are bringing some strange ideas to our ears, and we would like to know what they mean.” 21 (All the Athenians(AI) and the foreigners who lived there spent their time doing nothing but talking about and listening to the latest ideas.)
22 Paul then stood up in the meeting of the Areopagus(AJ) and said: “People of Athens! I see that in every way you are very religious.(AK) 23 For as I walked around and looked carefully at your objects of worship, I even found an altar with this inscription: to an unknown god. So you are ignorant of the very thing you worship(AL)—and this is what I am going to proclaim to you.
24 “The God who made the world and everything in it(AM) is the Lord of heaven and earth(AN) and does not live in temples built by human hands.(AO) 25 And he is not served by human hands, as if he needed anything. Rather, he himself gives everyone life and breath and everything else.(AP) 26 From one man he made all the nations, that they should inhabit the whole earth; and he marked out their appointed times in history and the boundaries of their lands.(AQ) 27 God did this so that they would seek him and perhaps reach out for him and find him, though he is not far from any one of us.(AR) 28 ‘For in him we live and move and have our being.’[b](AS) As some of your own poets have said, ‘We are his offspring.’[c]
29 “Therefore since we are God’s offspring, we should not think that the divine being is like gold or silver or stone—an image made by human design and skill.(AT) 30 In the past God overlooked(AU) such ignorance,(AV) but now he commands all people everywhere to repent.(AW) 31 For he has set a day when he will judge(AX) the world with justice(AY) by the man he has appointed.(AZ) He has given proof of this to everyone by raising him from the dead.”(BA)
32 When they heard about the resurrection of the dead,(BB) some of them sneered, but others said, “We want to hear you again on this subject.” 33 At that, Paul left the Council. 34 Some of the people became followers of Paul and believed. Among them was Dionysius, a member of the Areopagus,(BC) also a woman named Damaris, and a number of others.
