12 ¶ Now at that time Herod the king stretched forth his hands to mistreat certain of the congregation. {Gr. ekklesia – called out ones}
2 And he killed James the brother of John with the sword.
3 And because he saw it pleased the Jews, he proceeded further to take Peter also. (Then were the days of unleavened bread.)
4 And when he had apprehended him, he put him in prison and delivered him to four quaternions of soldiers to keep him, intending after the Passover to bring him forth to the people.
5 ¶ Peter therefore was kept in the prison, and the congregation {Gr. ekklesia – called out ones} made prayer without unto God for him.
6 And when Herod would have brought him forth, the same night Peter was sleeping between two soldiers, bound with two chains, and the guards before the door that kept the prison.
7 And, behold, the angel of the Lord came upon him, and a light shone in the prison, and he smote Peter on the side and woke him up, saying, Arise quickly. And his chains fell off from his hands.
8 And the angel said unto him, Gird thyself and bind on thy sandals. And so he did. And he said unto him, Cast thy garment about thee and follow me.
9 And he went out and followed him and knew not that it was true which was done by the angel, but thought he saw a vision.
10 When they were past the first and the second guard, they came unto the iron gate that leads unto the city, which opened to them of its own accord, and they went out and passed on through one street, and then the angel departed from him.
11 And when Peter was come to himself, he said, Now I know of a surety that the Lord has sent his angel and has delivered me out of the hand of Herod and from all the people of the Jews who waited for me.
12 And considering this, he came to the house of Mary the mother of John, whose surname was Mark, where many were gathered together praying.
13 And as Peter knocked at the door of the patio, a damsel came to hearken, named Rhoda.
14 And when she recognized Peter’s voice, she opened not the gate for gladness, but ran in and told how Peter stood at the gate.
15 And they said unto her, Thou art mad. But she constantly affirmed that it was even so. Then they said, It is his angel.
16 But Peter continued knocking, and when they had opened the door and saw him, they were astonished.
17 But he, beckoning unto them with the hand to be silent, declared unto them how the Lord had brought him out of the prison. And he said, Go make these things known unto James and to the brethren. And he departed and went to another place.
18 Now as soon as it was day, there was no small stir among the soldiers concerning what was become of Peter.
19 And when Herod had sought for him and found him not, he examined the guards and commanded that they should be taken away. Then he went down from Judaea to Caesarea and abode there.
20 ¶ And Herod was highly displeased with those of Tyre and Sidon, but they came with one accord to him, and, having bribed Blastus, the king’s chamberlain, they asked for peace because their lands were supplied through those of the king’s.
21 And upon a set day Herod, arrayed in royal apparel, sat upon his throne and made an oration unto them.
22 And the people gave a shout, saying, It is the voice of god, and not of man.
23 And immediately the angel of the Lord smote him because he did not give God the glory, and he expired eaten of worms.
24 But the word of the Lord grew and multiplied.
25 And Barnabas and Saul returned from Jerusalem, when they had fulfilled their ministry, and took with them John, whose surname was Mark.

Herod’s Violence to the Church

Now it was during (B)the Days of Unleavened Bread. 4 So (C)when he had arrested him, he put him in prison, and delivered him to four [a]squads of soldiers to keep him, intending to bring him before the people after Passover.
Peter Freed from Prison
5 Peter was therefore kept in prison, but [b]constant prayer was offered to God for him by the church. 6 And when Herod was about to bring him out, that night Peter was sleeping, bound with two chains between two soldiers; and the guards before the door were [c]keeping the prison. 7 Now behold, (D)an angel of the Lord stood by him, and a light shone in the prison; and he struck Peter on the side and raised him up, saying, “Arise quickly!” And his chains fell off his hands. 8 Then the angel said to him, “Gird yourself and tie on your sandals”; and so he did. And he said to him, “Put on your garment and follow me.” 9 So he went out and followed him, and (E)did not know that what was done by the angel was real, but thought (F)he was seeing a vision. 10 When they were past the first and the second guard posts, they came to the iron gate that leads to the city, (G)which opened to them of its own accord; and they went out and went down one street, and immediately the angel departed from him.
11 And when Peter had come to himself, he said, “Now I know for certain that (H)the Lord has sent His angel, and (I)has delivered me from the hand of Herod and from all the expectation of the Jewish people.”
12 So, when he had considered this, (J)he came to the house of Mary, the mother of (K)John whose surname was Mark, where many were gathered together (L)praying. 13 And as Peter knocked at the door of the gate, a girl named Rhoda came to answer. 14 When she recognized Peter’s voice, because of her gladness she did not open the gate, but ran in and announced that Peter stood before the gate. 15 But they said to her, “You are beside yourself!” Yet she kept insisting that it was so. So they said, (M)“It is his angel.”
16 Now Peter continued knocking; and when they opened the door and saw him, they were astonished. 17 But (N)motioning to them with his hand to keep silent, he declared to them how the Lord had brought him out of the prison. And he said, “Go, tell these things to James and to the brethren.” And he departed and went to another place.
18 Then, as soon as it was day, there was no small [d]stir among the soldiers about what had become of Peter. 19 But when Herod had searched for him and not found him, he examined the guards and commanded that they should be put to death.
And he went down from Judea to Caesarea, and stayed there.
Herod’s Violent Death
20 Now Herod had been very angry with the people of (O)Tyre and Sidon; but they came to him with one accord, and having made Blastus [e]the king’s personal aide their friend, they asked for peace, because (P)their country was [f]supplied with food by the king’s country.
21 So on a set day Herod, arrayed in royal apparel, sat on his throne and gave an oration to them. 22 And the people kept shouting, “The voice of a god and not of a man!” 23 Then immediately an angel of the Lord (Q)struck him, because (R)he did not give glory to God. And he was eaten by worms and [g]died.
24 But (S)the word of God grew and multiplied.
Barnabas and Saul Appointed
25 And (T)Barnabas and Saul returned [h]from Jerusalem when they had (U)fulfilled their ministry, and they also (V)took with them (W)John whose surname was Mark.

Peter’s Miraculous Escape From Prison
12 It was about this time that King Herod(A) arrested some who belonged to the church, intending to persecute them. 2 He had James, the brother of John,(B) put to death with the sword.(C) 3 When he saw that this met with approval among the Jews,(D) he proceeded to seize Peter also. This happened during the Festival of Unleavened Bread.(E) 4 After arresting him, he put him in prison, handing him over to be guarded by four squads of four soldiers each. Herod intended to bring him out for public trial after the Passover.(F)
5 So Peter was kept in prison, but the church was earnestly praying to God for him.(G)
6 The night before Herod was to bring him to trial, Peter was sleeping between two soldiers, bound with two chains,(H) and sentries stood guard at the entrance. 7 Suddenly an angel(I) of the Lord appeared and a light shone in the cell. He struck Peter on the side and woke him up. “Quick, get up!” he said, and the chains fell off Peter’s wrists.(J)
8 Then the angel said to him, “Put on your clothes and sandals.” And Peter did so. “Wrap your cloak around you and follow me,” the angel told him. 9 Peter followed him out of the prison, but he had no idea that what the angel was doing was really happening; he thought he was seeing a vision.(K) 10 They passed the first and second guards and came to the iron gate leading to the city. It opened for them by itself,(L) and they went through it. When they had walked the length of one street, suddenly the angel left him.
11 Then Peter came to himself(M) and said, “Now I know without a doubt that the Lord has sent his angel and rescued me(N) from Herod’s clutches and from everything the Jewish people were hoping would happen.”
12 When this had dawned on him, he went to the house of Mary the mother of John, also called Mark,(O) where many people had gathered and were praying.(P) 13 Peter knocked at the outer entrance, and a servant named Rhoda came to answer the door.(Q) 14 When she recognized Peter’s voice, she was so overjoyed(R) she ran back without opening it and exclaimed, “Peter is at the door!”
15 “You’re out of your mind,” they told her. When she kept insisting that it was so, they said, “It must be his angel.”(S)
16 But Peter kept on knocking, and when they opened the door and saw him, they were astonished. 17 Peter motioned with his hand(T) for them to be quiet and described how the Lord had brought him out of prison. “Tell James(U) and the other brothers and sisters(V) about this,” he said, and then he left for another place.
18 In the morning, there was no small commotion among the soldiers as to what had become of Peter. 19 After Herod had a thorough search made for him and did not find him, he cross-examined the guards and ordered that they be executed.(W)
Herod’s Death
Then Herod went from Judea to Caesarea(X) and stayed there. 20 He had been quarreling with the people of Tyre and Sidon;(Y) they now joined together and sought an audience with him. After securing the support of Blastus, a trusted personal servant of the king, they asked for peace, because they depended on the king’s country for their food supply.(Z)
21 On the appointed day Herod, wearing his royal robes, sat on his throne and delivered a public address to the people. 22 They shouted, “This is the voice of a god, not of a man.” 23 Immediately, because Herod did not give praise to God, an angel(AA) of the Lord struck him down,(AB) and he was eaten by worms and died.
24 But the word of God(AC) continued to spread and flourish.(AD)
Barnabas and Saul Sent Off
25 When Barnabas(AE) and Saul had finished their mission,(AF) they returned from[a] Jerusalem, taking with them John, also called Mark.(AG)

Pedro escapa milagrosamente de la cárcel
12 En aquellos días el rey Herodes hizo arrestar a algunos de la iglesia para maltratarlos. 2 Y mandó matar a Jacobo, hermano de Juan. 3 Al ver que con eso había agradado a los judíos, arrestó a Pedro durante la celebración de la Pascua. 4 Lo puso en prisión bajo la custodia de dieciséis soldados. La intención de Herodes era hacerle un juicio público a Pedro después de la Pascua.
5 La iglesia, al enterarse, se entregó a orar ferviente y constantemente por Pedro, mientras estaba en prisión.
6 La noche antes del juicio, cuando Pedro dormía encadenado entre dos soldados, mientras los demás custodiaban la entrada de la prisión, 7 una luz repentina inundó la celda y un ángel del Señor se paró junto a Pedro. El ángel, tras darle unas palmadas en el costado para despertarlo, le dijo: «¡Levántate! ¡Rápido!». Y las cadenas se le cayeron de las manos. 8 «¡Vístete y ponte el calzado! —le ordenó el ángel—. Ponte ahora el manto y sígueme».
9 Entonces Pedro salió de la prisión tras el ángel. Aquello no le parecía real; para él no era más que una visión.
10 Cruzaron la primera y la segunda guardias y llegaron a la puerta de hierro que daba a la calle. Esta se les abrió automáticamente. Caminaron juntos unas cuadras, tras lo cual el ángel lo dejó solo.
11 Fue entonces cuando Pedro comprendió la realidad: «No cabe duda», se dijo. «El Señor ha enviado a su ángel a salvarme de Herodes y de lo que los judíos esperaban hacer conmigo».
12 Con este pensamiento, fue a casa de María, la madre de Juan Marcos, donde muchos estaban reunidos orando. 13 Tocó a la puerta del patio.
14 Una muchacha llamada Rode fue a abrir, pero al reconocer la voz de Pedro se emocionó tanto que sin abrir corrió llena de alegría a informar a los demás que Pedro estaba a la puerta.
15 ―¿Estás loca? —le dijeron.
Pero como la muchacha insistía en afirmarlo, argumentaron:
―Ha de ser su ángel.
16 Mientras tanto, Pedro seguía tocando a la puerta. Cuando finalmente la abrieron, se quedaron pasmados de sorpresa. 17 Pero él, después de hacerles señas para que se callaran, les relató cómo el Señor lo había libertado de la cárcel.
―Mándenle a decir a Jacobo y a los hermanos lo que ha ocurrido —les dijo—, y se fue a otro lugar.
18 Al despuntar el alba, se armó un gran alboroto en la cárcel. ¿Qué se había hecho Pedro? 19 Y cuando Herodes lo mandó buscar y no lo halló, hizo responsables a los guardias y los sentenció a muerte. Después se fue a vivir un tiempo en Cesarea.
Muerte de Herodes
20 Una delegación de Tiro y Sidón fue a verlo a Cesarea. Herodes estaba enojado con los habitantes de esas dos ciudades, pero los miembros de la delegación se compraron la amistad de Blasto, el secretario del rey, y solicitaron la paz, porque sus ciudades dependían económicamente del comercio con el territorio de Herodes.
21 Herodes les concedió audiencia y el día señalado se vistió sus mantos reales, se sentó en el trono y pronunció un discurso ante ellos. 22 La gente gritaba: «¡Ha hablado un dios, no un hombre!». 23 En aquel mismo instante un ángel del Señor lo hirió con una enfermedad tan terrible que Herodes murió comido por los gusanos. ¡Todo por no darle la gloria a Dios!
24 La palabra de Dios se propagaba y se extendía.
25 Bernabé y Saulo, que estaban de visita en Jerusalén, concluyeron su servicio allí y regresaron a Antioquía, llevando con ellos a Juan, al que le decían también Marcos.
