1 提阿非罗啊,在前一封信中,我从耶稣的生平和教导开始, 2 一直谈到祂借着圣灵吩咐了自己选立的使徒,然后被接回天上。 3 祂受难后用许多确凿的证据证实自己活着,在四十天之内屡次向使徒显现,与他们谈论上帝的国。 4 有一次,耶稣和他们在一起吃饭的时候,叮嘱他们:“你们不要离开耶路撒冷,要在那里等候我对你们说过的天父的应许。 5 因为从前约翰用水给你们施洗,但再过几天,你们要受圣灵的洗。”
6 他们跟耶稣在一起的时候问祂:“主啊,你要在这时候复兴以色列国吗?” 7 耶稣回答说:“天父照祂的权柄定下的时间、日期不是你们可以知道的。 8 但圣灵降临在你们身上后,你们必得到能力,在耶路撒冷、犹太全境和撒玛利亚,直到地极,做我的见证人。”
9 耶稣说完这番话,就在他们眼前被提升天,被一朵云彩接去,离开了他们的视线。 10 祂上升时,他们都定睛望着天空,忽然有两个身穿白衣的人站在他们身旁, 11 说:“加利利人啊!你们为什么站在这里望着天空呢?这位离开你们被接到天上的耶稣,你们看见祂怎样升天,将来祂还要怎样回来。”
选立新使徒
12 于是,他们从橄榄山回到耶路撒冷。橄榄山距离耶路撒冷不远,约是安息日允许走的路程[a]。 13 他们进城后,来到楼上自己住的房间。当时有彼得、约翰、雅各、安得烈、腓力、多马、巴多罗买、马太、亚勒腓的儿子雅各、激进党人西门、雅各的儿子犹大。 14 他们和耶稣的母亲玛丽亚、耶稣的弟弟们及几个妇女在一起同心合意地恒切祷告。
15 那时,约有一百二十人在聚会,彼得站起来说: 16 “弟兄们,关于带人抓耶稣的犹大,圣灵借着大卫的口早已预言,这经文必须要应验。 17 这人原本是我们中间的一员,与我们同担使徒的职分。”
18 犹大用作恶得来的钱买了一块田,他头朝下栽倒在那里,肚破肠流。 19 这消息很快传遍了耶路撒冷,当地人称那块田为“亚革大马”,就是“血田”的意思。
20 彼得继续说:“诗篇上写道,‘愿他的家园一片荒凉,无人居住’,又说,‘愿别人取代他的职位。’ 21-22 所以,我们必须另选一个人代替犹大,与我们一同为主耶稣的复活做见证。他必须是从主耶稣接受约翰的洗礼起一直到主升天,始终与我们在一起的人。”
23 被提名的有别号巴撒巴又叫犹士都的约瑟和马提亚两个人。 24-25 大家便祷告说:“主啊!你洞悉人的内心,求你指明这两个人中你要拣选哪一个来担负使徒的职分。犹大丢弃了这职分,去了他该去的地方。” 26 然后,他们抽签,抽中了马提亚,就把他列入十一使徒中。

Jezus gaat naar de hemel
1 Teofilus, in mijn eerste boek heb ik je geschreven over alles wat Jezus heeft gedaan en aan de mensen heeft geleerd voordat Hij naar de hemel ging.[a] 2 Voordat Hij naar de hemel ging, leerde Hij door de Heilige Geest nog allerlei dingen aan de leerlingen die Hij had uitgekozen. 3 Want nadat Hij uit de dood was opgestaan, liet Hij zich nog vaak aan de leerlingen zien. Pas na 40 dagen ging Hij naar de hemel. Tijdens die 40 dagen sprak Hij met de leerlingen over allerlei dingen die met het Koninkrijk van God te maken hebben. Ook deed Hij nog heel veel wonderen.
4 Toen Hij op een keer bij hen was, zei Hij tegen hen dat ze niet uit Jeruzalem mochten weggaan. Hij zei dat ze in Jeruzalem moesten blijven wachten op wat de Vader beloofd had. "Ik heb jullie al verteld wat die belofte is," zei Jezus. 5 "Johannes doopte met water. Maar binnenkort zullen jullie met de Heilige Geest worden gedoopt."
6 De mensen die daar bij Hem waren, vroegen Hem: "Heer, gaat U er nú voor zorgen dat Israël weer een eigen koninkrijk wordt?"[b] 7 Hij antwoordde: "Het gaat jullie niet aan wanneer dat gaat gebeuren. Alleen de Vader weet dat. Hij bepaalt wanneer dat zal zijn. 8 Maar jullie zullen de Heilige Geest krijgen. Hij zal jullie kracht geven. Dan zullen jullie aan de mensen gaan vertellen wat jullie van Mij hebben gezien en gehoord. Eerst in Jeruzalem, dan in heel Judea en Samaria en daarna in de hele wereld."
9 Hierna zagen ze hoe Hij opsteeg naar de hemel. Toen kwam er een wolk en ze zagen Hem niet meer. 10 Ze bleven naar de lucht staan staren. Plotseling stonden er twee mannen in witte kleren bij hen. 11 Ze zeiden: "Mannen uit Galilea, waarom staan jullie naar de lucht te staren? Jullie hebben gezien hoe deze Jezus bij jullie is weggegaan naar de hemel. Op dezelfde manier zal Hij weer terugkomen."
Judas' taak wordt overgenomen door iemand anders
12 Ze liepen van de Olijfberg terug naar Jeruzalem. (De Olijfberg was precies zo ver van Jeruzalem als je op een heilige rustdag mag lopen. Namelijk ongeveer 1½ km.) 13 Ze kwamen terug in de stad. Daar gingen ze naar de bovenzaal waar ze logeerden. Het waren Petrus, Johannes, Jakobus, Andreas, Filippus, Thomas, Bartolomeüs, Matteüs, Jakobus de zoon van Alfeüs, Simon de Zeloot, en Judas[c] de zoon van Jakobus. 14 Ze bleven eensgezind met elkaar bidden, samen met een paar vrouwen. Ook Jezus' moeder Maria en Jezus' broers waren daar.
15 Op een dag was er een groep van ongeveer 120 leerlingen bij elkaar. Petrus stond op en zei: 16 "Broeders en zusters, in de Boeken heeft David al door de Heilige Geest over Judas gesproken. En wat David over hem heeft gezegd, is ook gebeurd. Judas heeft de weg gewezen aan de mensen die Jezus gevangen kwamen nemen. 17 Hij hoorde bij onze groep en had dezelfde taak als wij. 18 Maar hij heeft Jezus verraden en daar geld voor gekregen. Met dat geld heeft hij een stuk grond gekocht. Maar hij is voorover gevallen, zijn buik is opengescheurd en zijn darmen kwamen naar buiten. 19 Iedereen in Jeruzalem heeft ervan gehoord. Daarom hebben ze dat stuk grond 'Akeldama' genoemd (Dat betekent 'bloedgrond'). 20 In het Boek van de Psalmen staat hierover: 'Laat de plaats waar hij woonde, verwilderen. Laat niemand er gaan wonen.' En ergens anders staat: 'Iemand anders moet de taak overnemen die hij had.' 21+22 Daarom moeten we iemand kiezen om zijn plaats in te nemen. Hij zal samen met ons aan de mensen gaan vertellen dat Jezus uit de dood is opgestaan. Het moet iemand zijn die al bij ons hoorde toen de Heer Jezus nog bij ons was. Hij moet aldoor met ons zijn meegegaan, vanaf de dag dat Jezus door Johannes werd gedoopt, tot de dag dat Jezus naar de hemel ging."
23 Ze stelden twee mannen voor: Jozef Barsabbas, die ook Justus genoemd werd, en Mattias. 24 Ze baden: "Heer, U kent alle harten. Wilt U aanwijzen wie van deze twee U heeft uitgekozen. 25 Dan zal hij Judas' plaats innemen en zijn taak overnemen. Want Judas is er niet meer bij. Hij is gegaan naar de plaats waar hij hoort." 26 Ze lieten de mannen loten en zo werd Mattias aangewezen. Vanaf dat moment hoorde hij bij de andere elf apostelen.[d]

- Handelingen 1:1 Veel geschiedschrijvers gaan ervan uit dat Lukas dat eerste boek ("Het evangelie van Lukas") én het boek Handelingen heeft geschreven voor de verdediging van Paulus, toen Paulus in Rome gevangen zat voor zijn geloof in Jezus. Teofilus was de rechter die de zaak van Paulus moest bekijken.
- Handelingen 1:6 Israël was veroverd door de Romeinen en een soort provincie van het Romeinse Rijk geworden.
- Handelingen 1:13 Dit is niet de Judas die Jezus verraden had. Die Judas leefde niet meer. Lees ook Matteüs 27:3-5.
- Handelingen 1:26 'Apostelen' zou je ook kunnen vertalen met 'zendelingen'. Ze worden 'uitgezonden' om het goede nieuws aan de mensen bekend te gaan maken. In de BasisBijbel zijn zij vaak 'boodschappers van God' genoemd. Want ze brengen Gods boodschap naar de mensen. Lees Lukas 6:13-16.

1 1 Luke tieth this history to his Gospel. 9 Christ being taken into heaven. 10 The Apostles, 11 being warned by the Angels, 12 to return, 14 and give themselves to prayer. 15 By Peter’s motion, 18 into Judas the traitor’s place. 26 Matthias is chosen.
1 I have made the [a]former treatise, O Theophilus, of all that Jesus began to [b]do and teach,
2 Until the day that he was taken up, after that he through the holy Ghost, had given commandments unto the Apostles, whom he had chosen:
3 [c]To whom also he presented himself alive after that he had suffered, by many [d]infallible tokens, being seen of them by the space of forty days, and speaking of those things which appertained to the kingdom of God.
4 (A)And when he had [e]gathered them together, he commanded them that they should not depart from Jerusalem, but to wait for the promise of the Father, (B)which said he, ye have heard of me.
5 (C)For John indeed baptized with water, but ye shall be baptized [f]with the holy Ghost within these few days.
6 [g]When they therefore were come together they asked of him, saying, Lord, wilt thou at this time [h]restore the kingdom to Israel?
7 And he said unto them, It is not for you to know the times, or the [i]seasons, which the Father hath put in his own power.
8 (D)But ye shall receive power of the holy Ghost, when he shall come on you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem and in all Judea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.
9 (E)[j]And when he had spoken these things, while they beheld, he was taken up: for a cloud took him up out of their sight.
10 And while they looked steadfastly toward heaven, as he went, behold, two men stood by them in white apparel.
11 Which also said, Ye men of Galilee, why stand ye gazing into heaven? This Jesus which is taken up [k]from you into heaven, shall so come, as ye have seen him go into heaven.
12 ¶ Then returned they unto Jerusalem from the mount that is called the mount of Olives, which is near to Jerusalem, being from it a Sabbath [l]day’s journey.
13 [m]And when they were [n]come in, they went up into an upper chamber, where abode both Peter and James, and John, and Andrew, Philip, and Thomas, Bartholomew, and Matthew, James the son of Alphaeus, and Simon Zealot, and Judas James’s brother.
14 These all [o]continued with [p]one accord in [q]prayer and supplication with the [r]women, and Mary the mother of Jesus, and with his [s]brethren.
15 [t]And in those days Peter stood up in the midst of the disciples, and said (now the number of [u]names that were in one place were about an hundred and twenty.)
16 [v]Ye men and brethren, this scripture must needs have been fulfilled, Which the (F)holy Ghost by the mouth of David spake before of Judas, which was (G)guide to them that took Jesus.
17 For he was numbered with us, and had obtained fellowship in this ministration.
18 He therefore hath [w]purchased a field with the reward of iniquity: and when (H)he had [x]thrown down himself headlong, he brast asunder in the midst, and all his bowels gushed out.
19 And it is known unto all the inhabitants of Jerusalem, insomuch, that that field is called in their own language, Akel Dama, that is, The field of blood.
20 For it is written in the book of Psalms, (I)Let his habitation be void, and let no man dwell therein: (J)also, Let another take his [y]charge.
21 [z]Wherefore of these men which have companied with us, all the time that the Lord Jesus was [aa]conversant among us,
22 Beginning from the baptism of John unto the day that he was taken up [ab]from us, must one of them be made a witness with us of his resurrection.
23 [ac]And they [ad]presented two, Joseph called Barsabas, whose surname was Justus, and Matthias.
24 And they prayed, saying, Thou Lord, which knowest the hearts of all men, show whether of these two thou hast chosen,
25 That he may take the [ae]room of this ministration and Apostleship, from which Judas hath [af]gone astray, to go to his own place.
26 Then they gave forth their lots: and the lot fell on Matthias, and he was by a common consent counted with the eleven Apostles.
