ペテロとコルネリウス
10 港湾都市カイザリヤには、ローマ軍にあるイタリヤ連合隊の隊長と呼ばれていたコルネリウスという男がいた。 2 彼と彼の家に住む人たちは全員、本当の神をたたえる者たちだった。彼は貧しいユダヤ人たちを助けるために自分のお金の多くを分け与え、神へ祈ることを忘れなかった。 3 ある日の午後3時ごろ・・・コルネリウスはビジョンを見た。自分のもとにやってくる神からの天使が明確に見え、話しかけてきたのだ。「コルネリウス！」
4 恐れながらも天使を見て、コルネリウスは言った。「な、何が欲しいのですか？」
天使は彼に言った。「あなたの祈りと貧しい人々への贈り物は、神を喜ばせるささげ物として上がってきたのです。 5 何人かの男性をヨッパの町に遣わし、ペテロと呼ばれるシモンという男をあなたの元に連れてきなさい。 6 彼は海辺に住む革職人・シモンという名前の男のところに滞在している」 7 すると、コルネリウスに語りかけた天使は去っていった。その後、コルネリウスは、すぐに2人の家来と彼の兵士を1人呼んだ。この兵士は、神を信じる者で、彼の側近の1人だった。 8 コルネリウスは3人の男たちに全てを説明し、港町ヨッパへ送り出した。
9 次の日の昼・・・3人は港町ヨッパ近くまで来ると、ペテロは祈るために家の屋上に行こうとしていた。 10 ペテロは腹を空かせていて、何か食べたかった。しかし、その食事が準備される間、ペテロはあるビジョンを見たのだ。 11 天が開かれ、その開いたところから何やら四隅のある大きな布が吊り下げられながら降りてくるのが見えた。 12 その中には、あらゆる種類の動物、爬虫類、鳥類がいた。 13 それから彼は声を聞いた。「ペテロ！起き上がれ！この中から好きな生き物を殺して、食べるんだ！」
14 しかし、ペテロは言った。「王である神よ！そんなことはできません！掟にある汚れたものや間違ったものは、これまで一度も食べたことがないんです！」
15 しかし、その声はもう一度ペテロに語った。「神がこれらのものを聖くしたのだから否定しなくて良い！」 16 このやり取りが3度続いた。その後、全てが天に戻っていった。 17 ペテロは、このビジョンがいったい何を意味するのかを不思議に思っていた。
その頃、コルネリウスが送った男たちはシモンの家を見つけ、ドアの向こうに立っていた。 18 彼らは尋ねた。「こちらにシモン・ペテロさんはいらっしゃいますか？」
19 ペテロがまださっきのビジョンのことを考えている最中、聖霊 がこう言った。「聞いてくれ、3人の男があなたを探しに来ている。 20 立ち上がって、下におりていきなさい。心配はいらない。わたしが彼らを送った。だから疑わずに彼らと一緒に行くんだ」 21 こうしてペテロは下におりていき、彼らに言った。「私を探しているんだろう。なんでここに来たんだ？」
22 男たちは言った。「聖なる天使がコルネリウスに言ったのです。あなたを彼の家に招待するようにと。彼は百人隊長です。彼は神をたたえる良い人で、ユダヤ人からも尊敬されています。天使は彼にあなたを彼の家に招待し、話を聞くようにと言われたのです」 23 ペテロは男たちに家に入ってもらい、1泊するようにと言った。
翌朝、ペテロは支度を整え、3人の男たちと出かけていった。港町ヨッパの信じる仲間たちも何人か一緒について来た。 24 翌日、彼らは港湾都市カイザリヤにやって来た。コルネリウスは彼らの帰りを心待ちにしており、すでに家族や親戚、親しい友人たちが家に集まっていた。
25 ペテロが家に入ると、ペテロはそこでコルネリウスと会った。彼はペテロの足元にひれ伏してたたえた。 26 しかし、ペテロは彼に立つようにと言った。「立ってくれ！私もあなたと同じ人間だ！」 27 ペテロはコルネリウスと話し続けた。こうしてペテロが家の中に進んでいくと、そこには大勢の人たちが集まっているのが見えた。
28 ペテロは人々に言った。「ユダヤ人の掟では、ユダヤ人ではない人と交流することも、家に訪ねることも禁じられていると知っていますよね。しかし、神は私に示したのです。特定の人と関わることが不純であり、間違っているとは言ってはならないと。 29 だから、あなたの部下がここに来るように言った時、私は言い返さなかった。そこで、なぜあなた方が私を招待したのか教えてください」
30 コルネリウスが口を開いて言った。「4日前のことですが・・・私は自分の家でちょうどこの時間、3時ごろに祈っていました。すると突然、誰かが私の前に立っていました。その方はまぶしく輝いている服を着ていたのです。 31 彼はこう言いました。『コルネリウス、神があなたの祈りを聞いてくれました。そして、あなたの貧しい人たちへの贈り物は、神を喜ばせるささげ物として上がってきた。 32 そこで、何人かの男たちを港町ヨッパに送って、シモン・ペテロに来てもらうよう伝えるのです。彼は海辺に住む革職人シモンという男と一緒に滞在しています』と・・・ 33 こうして、私はすぐに遣いを送ったのです。ここに来てくれて良かったです。今、私たちはみんな、神の前にいて王である神があなたに命じられた全てを聞くためにここにいるのです」
コルネリウスの家で話すペテロ
34 ペテロは語り始めた。「たった今、理解しました。神はある人が他の者たちよりも優れていると考えてはいないということです。 35 神のことを賛美する人、正しいことを行う人、神はそういった人々を誰でも受け入れてくれる。彼らがどこの国の出身かは重要ではない。 36 神はイスラエルの人々に言ったんだ。神はイエス・キリストを通して平和が訪れるという最高な知らせを送ったと。イエスこそが全ての人を治める王であると。
37 ユダヤ全土で何が起こったかは知っているだろう。ヨハネが人々に洗礼を受ける必要があると伝えた後、ガリラヤからこのことは始まった。 38 ナザレ村出身のイエスについて知っているだろう。神は聖霊と力を与えることによって、イエスを救い主として選んだ。イエスはいろんなところに行って、人々のために善を尽くした。彼は悪魔に支配された者たちを癒し、神が共にいることを証明していったのだ。
39 私たちはイエスがユダヤ地方とエルサレムの街で行った全てのことを目撃した。しかし、彼は殺された。彼らがイエスを木で作った十字架にかけたんだ。 40 だが死んだ後、3日目に神が彼を生き返らせ、その姿を公に現した。 41 イエスは全ての人にその姿を見せたのではなく、神が証人として選んだ俺たちにだけ姿を見せたんだ。イエスが死から復活した後、私たちはイエスと一緒に食事もした。
42 イエスは私たちに、外に出て行ってユダヤ人に伝えるようにと言ったんだ。彼は選ばれた救い主であり、彼は生きている人と死んだ人を裁く者だ。 43 イエスを信じる全ての人は、イエスの権威によって過ちが赦される。全ての預言者は、これが真実であることに同意を示している」
神は全ての人を受け入れてくれることを示している
44 ペテロがまだこれらのことを話している最中、彼の言葉を聞いていた全ての人に聖霊が降りてきた。 45 ペテロと一緒に来ていたユダヤ人の信じる仲間たちは、贈り物としての聖霊がユダヤ人ではない人々に注がれたことに驚いた。 46 彼らは違う言語を話し、神に賛美をささげ始めたのだ。その後、ペテロが言った。 47 「これを見て、誰が彼らの水の洗礼に反対することができるだろうか？彼らは私たちと同じように聖霊を受けとった！」 48 そこでペテロは彼らにイエス・キリストの名によってコルネリウスと彼の親戚や友人に水の洗礼を授けるようにと指示をした。それから彼らはペテロに数日間滞在するようにとお願いした。
Acts 10

10 There was a certain man in Caesarea called Cornelius, a centurion of the band called the Italian band,
2 A devout man, and one that feared God with all his house, which gave much alms to the people, and prayed to God alway.
3 He saw in a vision evidently about the ninth hour of the day an angel of God coming in to him, and saying unto him, Cornelius.
4 And when he looked on him, he was afraid, and said, What is it, Lord? And he said unto him, Thy prayers and thine alms are come up for a memorial before God.
5 And now send men to Joppa, and call for one Simon, whose surname is Peter:
6 He lodgeth with one Simon a tanner, whose house is by the sea side: he shall tell thee what thou oughtest to do.
7 And when the angel which spake unto Cornelius was departed, he called two of his household servants, and a devout soldier of them that waited on him continually;
8 And when he had declared all these things unto them, he sent them to Joppa.
9 On the morrow, as they went on their journey, and drew nigh unto the city, Peter went up upon the housetop to pray about the sixth hour:
10 And he became very hungry, and would have eaten: but while they made ready, he fell into a trance,
11 And saw heaven opened, and a certain vessel descending upon him, as it had been a great sheet knit at the four corners, and let down to the earth:
12 Wherein were all manner of fourfooted beasts of the earth, and wild beasts, and creeping things, and fowls of the air.
13 And there came a voice to him, Rise, Peter; kill, and eat.
14 But Peter said, Not so, Lord; for I have never eaten any thing that is common or unclean.
15 And the voice spake unto him again the second time, What God hath cleansed, that call not thou common.
16 This was done thrice: and the vessel was received up again into heaven.
17 Now while Peter doubted in himself what this vision which he had seen should mean, behold, the men which were sent from Cornelius had made enquiry for Simon's house, and stood before the gate,
18 And called, and asked whether Simon, which was surnamed Peter, were lodged there.
19 While Peter thought on the vision, the Spirit said unto him, Behold, three men seek thee.
20 Arise therefore, and get thee down, and go with them, doubting nothing: for I have sent them.
21 Then Peter went down to the men which were sent unto him from Cornelius; and said, Behold, I am he whom ye seek: what is the cause wherefore ye are come?
22 And they said, Cornelius the centurion, a just man, and one that feareth God, and of good report among all the nation of the Jews, was warned from God by an holy angel to send for thee into his house, and to hear words of thee.
23 Then called he them in, and lodged them. And on the morrow Peter went away with them, and certain brethren from Joppa accompanied him.
24 And the morrow after they entered into Caesarea. And Cornelius waited for them, and he had called together his kinsmen and near friends.
25 And as Peter was coming in, Cornelius met him, and fell down at his feet, and worshipped him.
26 But Peter took him up, saying, Stand up; I myself also am a man.
27 And as he talked with him, he went in, and found many that were come together.
28 And he said unto them, Ye know how that it is an unlawful thing for a man that is a Jew to keep company, or come unto one of another nation; but God hath shewed me that I should not call any man common or unclean.
29 Therefore came I unto you without gainsaying, as soon as I was sent for: I ask therefore for what intent ye have sent for me?
30 And Cornelius said, Four days ago I was fasting until this hour; and at the ninth hour I prayed in my house, and, behold, a man stood before me in bright clothing,
31 And said, Cornelius, thy prayer is heard, and thine alms are had in remembrance in the sight of God.
32 Send therefore to Joppa, and call hither Simon, whose surname is Peter; he is lodged in the house of one Simon a tanner by the sea side: who, when he cometh, shall speak unto thee.
33 Immediately therefore I sent to thee; and thou hast well done that thou art come. Now therefore are we all here present before God, to hear all things that are commanded thee of God.
34 Then Peter opened his mouth, and said, Of a truth I perceive that God is no respecter of persons:
35 But in every nation he that feareth him, and worketh righteousness, is accepted with him.
36 The word which God sent unto the children of Israel, preaching peace by Jesus Christ: (he is Lord of all:)
37 That word, I say, ye know, which was published throughout all Judaea, and began from Galilee, after the baptism which John preached;
38 How God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Ghost and with power: who went about doing good, and healing all that were oppressed of the devil; for God was with him.
39 And we are witnesses of all things which he did both in the land of the Jews, and in Jerusalem; whom they slew and hanged on a tree:
40 Him God raised up the third day, and shewed him openly;
41 Not to all the people, but unto witnesses chosen before God, even to us, who did eat and drink with him after he rose from the dead.
42 And he commanded us to preach unto the people, and to testify that it is he which was ordained of God to be the Judge of quick and dead.
43 To him give all the prophets witness, that through his name whosoever believeth in him shall receive remission of sins.
44 While Peter yet spake these words, the Holy Ghost fell on all them which heard the word.
45 And they of the circumcision which believed were astonished, as many as came with Peter, because that on the Gentiles also was poured out the gift of the Holy Ghost.
46 For they heard them speak with tongues, and magnify God. Then answered Peter,
47 Can any man forbid water, that these should not be baptized, which have received the Holy Ghost as well as we?
48 And he commanded them to be baptized in the name of the Lord. Then prayed they him to tarry certain days.
