1 テオピロへ、
私が初めに書いた本は、イエスが行った全ての事だ。また、イエスの教えを全て初めから記した本だ。 2 イエスは復活してから天に引き上げられるまでの間、聖霊の助けによって使徒たちを任命し、これからするべきことを伝えた。 3 これは彼の死後のことだったが、彼は自分が生きていることを彼らに示し、様々な方法でそれを証明した。使徒たちはイエスが死から復活してからの40日間、何度もイエスを見たのだ。イエスは人々の前に姿を現すたびに神の王国についての話をした。 4 イエスは使徒たちと一緒に食事をしていた時、エルサレムを離れないようにと彼らに伝えた。「お父さんが送ってくれると約束した聖霊を受けとるまで、エルサレムから離れてはいけない！ 5 洗礼者ヨハネは水で洗礼を授けたが、お前たちはもうすぐ聖霊による洗礼を受けるからだ！」
天に引き上げられるイエス
6 使徒たちはみんな集まっていた。すると、彼らはイエスに尋ねた。「イエス様！今度はあなたが再びイスラエルの人々に彼らの王国を与える時だということですか？」
7 イエスは彼らに言った。「それはお父さんが決めること。だから、お前たちが知る必要はない。 8 だが、聖霊が来ると、彼はお前たちに力を与える。お前たちは、エルサレム、ユダヤ全土、サマリア、そして世界のあらゆる場所でわたしのことを伝える証人となるのだ！」
9 イエスはこう言い終えると、天に引き上げられた！使徒たちが見ている目の前で、彼は雲の中に引き上げられ、見えなくなっていったのだ・・・ 10 イエスが去っていくその姿を、そして、空を使徒たちは眺め続けた。すると突然、真っ白な衣を着た2人の男たちがそばに立っていた。 11 彼らは言った。「ガリラヤ出身のみなさん。なぜここに立って空を見つめているのですか？あなた方は、イエスがあなた方のもとから天に引き上げられたその光景をその目で見たでしょう。それと同じように、イエスはまた戻って来るのですよ」
新しい使徒が選ばれた
12 使徒たちはオリーブ山を下り、神殿の都エルサレムまで1kmほどの道のりを歩いて帰った。 13 都に入り、彼らは泊まっていた家の2階に上がると、そこにはペテロと兄ヤコブ、そして弟ヨハネ、ペテロの弟アンデレ、ピリポ、トマス、バルトロマイ、マタイ、アルパヨの子ヤコブ、熱心党員シモン、ヤコブの息子ユダの顔ぶれが揃っていた。
14 使徒たちは集まり、同じ目的で祈り続けていた。イエスの兄弟やその母・マリア、また何人かの女性たちも使徒たちと共にいた。
15 それから数日後、そこには120人ほどの仲間たちが集まった。ペテロは立ち上がって、彼らに語った。 16-17 「兄弟、姉妹のみんな。聞いてくれ！聖書の中で聖霊は言っている。ダビデを通して何らかが起こらなければならないと・・・。ダビデが話していたこととは・・・俺らの弟子の1人だったユダのことだ。ユダは俺たちと一緒に仕えていた。霊は言った・・・イエスを捕らえるために、ユダは男たちを引き連れて来るだろう・・・」と・・・
18 ユダはこれに加担することで報酬をもらった。彼はそのお金を使って土地を購入すると、その場所で彼は頭から真っ逆さまに落ちた。その衝撃で彼の体は引き裂かれ、腹わたが血とともにふき出した。 19 こうして、エルサレム全ての人はこの事件を知った。そして、その土地を「血の土地」と呼んだのだ。
20 ペテロは言った。「詩篇でも、ユダについてこう書いてある。
『♪人々は彼の土地の近くに行くべきじゃない。
誰もそこで住むべきじゃない』
また、こうも書かれている。
『♪彼の務めは他の男に任せよ』
21-22 だから今、別の男が俺たちに加わり、イエスの復活の証人にならなければならないのだ。その人は、イエスが俺たちと共にいた時からずっと仲間の1人だった者でなければならない。つまり、ヨハネが洗礼を人々に授けていた頃からイエスが天に引き上げられるまで、ずっと俺たちと共にいた者でならなければいけないと言うことだ！」
23 彼らは2人の候補者を仲間たちの前に出した。一人目はユストと呼ばれたヨセフ、別名バルサバ。そして、2人目はマッテヤだ。 24-25 彼ら使徒たちは祈った。「神よ、あなたは全ての人の思いを知っている。この2人のうち、どちらをこの働きをするために選んだのか示してください！ユダはそこから背を向け、自分の属している場所へと行った。神よ！使徒としての役割を担うべき人を示してくれ！」 26 それから彼らは、2人のうち1人を選ぶためにクジを使った。その結果、マッテヤが選ばれた。そこでマッテヤは他11人と共に使徒となった。

1 The former treatise have I made, O Theophilus, of all that Jesus began both to do and teach,
2 Until the day in which he was taken up, after that he through the Holy Ghost had given commandments unto the apostles whom he had chosen:
3 To whom also he shewed himself alive after his passion by many infallible proofs, being seen of them forty days, and speaking of the things pertaining to the kingdom of God:
4 And, being assembled together with them, commanded them that they should not depart from Jerusalem, but wait for the promise of the Father, which, saith he, ye have heard of me.
5 For John truly baptized with water; but ye shall be baptized with the Holy Ghost not many days hence.
6 When they therefore were come together, they asked of him, saying, Lord, wilt thou at this time restore again the kingdom to Israel?
7 And he said unto them, It is not for you to know the times or the seasons, which the Father hath put in his own power.
8 But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.
9 And when he had spoken these things, while they beheld, he was taken up; and a cloud received him out of their sight.
10 And while they looked stedfastly toward heaven as he went up, behold, two men stood by them in white apparel;
11 Which also said, Ye men of Galilee, why stand ye gazing up into heaven? this same Jesus, which is taken up from you into heaven, shall so come in like manner as ye have seen him go into heaven.
12 Then returned they unto Jerusalem from the mount called Olivet, which is from Jerusalem a sabbath day's journey.
13 And when they were come in, they went up into an upper room, where abode both Peter, and James, and John, and Andrew, Philip, and Thomas, Bartholomew, and Matthew, James the son of Alphaeus, and Simon Zelotes, and Judas the brother of James.
14 These all continued with one accord in prayer and supplication, with the women, and Mary the mother of Jesus, and with his brethren.
15 And in those days Peter stood up in the midst of the disciples, and said, (the number of names together were about an hundred and twenty,)
16 Men and brethren, this scripture must needs have been fulfilled, which the Holy Ghost by the mouth of David spake before concerning Judas, which was guide to them that took Jesus.
17 For he was numbered with us, and had obtained part of this ministry.
18 Now this man purchased a field with the reward of iniquity; and falling headlong, he burst asunder in the midst, and all his bowels gushed out.
19 And it was known unto all the dwellers at Jerusalem; insomuch as that field is called in their proper tongue, Aceldama, that is to say, The field of blood.
20 For it is written in the book of Psalms, Let his habitation be desolate, and let no man dwell therein: and his bishoprick let another take.
21 Wherefore of these men which have companied with us all the time that the Lord Jesus went in and out among us,
22 Beginning from the baptism of John, unto that same day that he was taken up from us, must one be ordained to be a witness with us of his resurrection.
23 And they appointed two, Joseph called Barsabas, who was surnamed Justus, and Matthias.
24 And they prayed, and said, Thou, Lord, which knowest the hearts of all men, shew whether of these two thou hast chosen,
25 That he may take part of this ministry and apostleship, from which Judas by transgression fell, that he might go to his own place.
26 And they gave forth their lots; and the lot fell upon Matthias; and he was numbered with the eleven apostles.
