耶和華指控以色列
4 以色列人啊，
你們要留心聽耶和華的話。
祂指控住在這片土地上的居民，說：
「這片土地上的人不忠不信，
毫無良善，不認識上帝。
2 他們咒詛、撒謊、兇殺、偷竊、通姦，
為所欲為，血案纍纍。
3 所以，這片土地要哀鳴，
所有的居民都要消亡，
田間的野獸、空中的飛鳥、
水裡的魚類也要滅絕。」
4 耶和華說：
「誰都不要指控別人，
誰都不要責備別人，
因為我要指控的是你們祭司。
5 你們白天黑夜都要跌倒，
先知也要跟你們一起跌倒，
所以我要毀滅你們的母親以色列。
6 我的子民因不認識我而遭毀滅。
因為你們拒絕認識我，
我也要拒絕讓你們做我的祭司；
因為你們忘記我的律法，
我也要忘記你們的兒女。
7 你們祭司越增多，
所犯的罪也越多，
所以我要使你們的尊榮變為羞恥。
8 你們祭司藉我子民的贖罪祭自肥，
滿心希望他們犯罪。
9 將來，我的子民如何，
你們祭司也如何。
我要照你們的所作所為懲罰你們、報應你們，
10 使你們吃卻不得飽足，
行淫卻不得後代[a]。
因為你們背棄耶和華，
11 沉溺酒色，喪失心志。
12 「我的子民祈求木頭，
隨從木杖的指引。
淫亂的心使他們走入歧途，
他們不忠不貞，背棄他們的上帝。
13 他們在山頂和高崗上的橡樹、
楊樹和栗樹下獻祭燒香，
因為樹蔭怡人。
「所以，你們的女兒賣淫，
你們的兒媳通姦。
14 但我不會因此而懲罰她們，
因為你們也與娼妓苟合，
與廟妓一起獻祭。
無知的民族必走向滅亡。

Lời Chúa nghịch cùng dân Ít-ra-en
4 Hỡi dân Ít-ra-en hãy nghe lời CHÚA phán.
CHÚA có điều nầy nghịch cùng các ngươi là kẻ sống trong xứ:
“Dân chúng không chân thành,
không trung tín cùng Thượng-Đế,
những người sống trong xứ
không thèm nhìn nhận Ngài.
2 Ta thấy tiếng chửi rủa, giết chóc,
trộm cắp và gian dâm khắp nơi.
Vụ giết người nầy tiếp theo vụ giết người khác.
3 Vì vậy mà đất nầy đã khô cằn,
dân chúng đang chết dần mòn.
Thậm chí các dã thú và chim trời,
cá dưới biển cũng chết dần.
Thượng-Đế nghịch cùng các thầy tế lễ
4 Không ai được phép tố cáo
hay trách cứ người khác,
Hỡi các ngươi là thầy tế lễ,
đừng đổ lỗi cho dân chúng,
khi họ gây gổ với các ngươi [a].
5 Các ngươi sẽ bị tàn hại trong ngày,
và các nhà tiên tri của ngươi
cũng bị tàn hại trong đêm.
Ta cũng sẽ tiêu diệt mẹ ngươi.
6 Dân ta sẽ bị tiêu diệt,
vì không hiểu biết.
Các ngươi không chịu học,
nên ta sẽ không để các ngươi
làm thầy tế lễ cho ta nữa.
Các ngươi đã quên lời giáo huấn
của Thượng-Đế ngươi,
nên ta cũng sẽ quên con cái ngươi.
7 Càng có nhiều thầy tế lễ,
càng có nhiều tội nghịch cùng ta.
Ta sẽ cất vinh dự của chúng nó
và mang sỉ nhục đến cho chúng nó.
8 Vì các thầy tế lễ sống bằng các của lễ chuộc tội của dân chúng [b],
nên họ mong dân chúng càng phạm tội thêm càng tốt.
9 Các thầy tế lễ cũng làm quấy
y như dân chúng,
cho nên ta sẽ trừng phạt cả hai
vì điều chúng làm.
Ta sẽ báo trả chúng nó
vì điều ác chúng làm.
10 Chúng sẽ ăn nhưng không no;
chúng sẽ hành lạc cùng gái điếm,
nhưng sẽ không sinh con cái nào [c],
vì chúng đã từ bỏ CHÚA và hiến thân
11 vào chuyện điếm đàng,
rượu cũ và rượu mới,
khiến chúng không còn khả năng
hiểu biết nữa.
Thượng-Đế nghịch cùng dân chúng
12 Dân ta hỏi ý các thần bằng gỗ;
chúng nó xin que củi chỉ bảo mình!
Chúng chạy theo các thần khác,
giống như các gái điếm,
chúng lìa bỏ Thượng-Đế mình.
13 Chúng dâng sinh tế trên các đỉnh núi.
Chúng đốt của lễ thiêu trên các đồi,
Dưới các cây sồi, cây dương,
và các cây khác [d],
vì bóng rợp của các cây đó dễ chịu.
Nên con gái các ngươi sẽ làm điếm,
và con dâu các ngươi
sẽ phạm tội ngoại tình.
14 Ta sẽ không trách con gái các ngươi về tội làm điếm,
cũng không trừng phạt con dâu các ngươi về tội ngoại tình.
Ta sẽ không trừng phạt chúng nó,
vì chính đàn ông các ngươi ăn nằm với gái điếm
và dâng của lễ cùng với các gái điếm trong đền thờ [e].
Đó là cách mà dân ngu dại tự hủy mình.
15 Hỡi Ít-ra-en,
ngươi đã hành động như điếm đĩ,
nhưng đừng cảm thấy tội lỗi đối với CHÚA.
Đừng đi đến Ghinh-ganh,
hay đi lên Bết A-ven [f].
Đừng hứa hẹn gì bằng cách tuyên bố,
‘Thật như CHÚA hằng sống …’
16 Dân Ít-ra-en rất ương ngạnh
giống như bò cái tơ dở chứng.
Bây giờ CHÚA sẽ cho chúng ăn
như chiên con trong đồng cỏ.
17 Dân Ít-ra-en thích bái lạy các thần tượng,
cho nên hãy để mặc chúng.
18 Khi chúng uống rượu xong,
chúng sẽ tự hiến thân vào chuyện điếm đĩ;
chúng thích những lối sỉ nhục.
19 Chúng sẽ bị gió lốc cuốn đi,
và các sinh tế của chúng
chỉ mang đến sỉ nhục thôi.”

- Hô-sê-a 4:4 Không ai … các ngươi Hay “Dân chúng không thể khiếu nại hay đỗ lỗi cho người khác. Họ bị ức hiếp như chẳng khác nào biện luận với thầy tế lễ.” Thầy tế lễ và người Lê-vi nhiều khi đóng vai quan án, và những quyết định của họ có tính cách tối hậu, không ai sửa đổi được.
- Hô-sê-a 4:8 Vì các … dân chúng Đây là một lối chơi chữ. Ý muốn nói thầy tế lễ sống bằng tội lỗi của dân chúng.
- Hô-sê-a 4:10 chúng sẽ hành lạc … con cái nào Một phần của nghi thức thờ phụng các thần giả là ăn nằm với các gái điếm trong đền thờ. Họ tin rằng làm như thế sẽ khiến các vị thần hài lòng, cho họ nhiều con cái và mùa màng tốt.
- Hô-sê-a 4:13 cây sồi, … cây khác Cây cối đóng vai quan trọng trong việc thờ phụng các thần giả.
- Hô-sê-a 4:14 gái điếm trong đền thờ Trong đền thờ các thần giả có các gái điếm để khách thập phương tới hành lạc. Đó là một trong những nghi thức thờ phụng của họ.
- Hô-sê-a 4:15 Bết A-ven Bết A-ven có nghĩa là “nhà gian ác.” Đây là một lối chơi chữ qua từ ngữ “Bê-tên.” “Bê-tên” nghĩa là “nhà của Thượng Đế.” Có một đền thờ ở nơi đó. Xem 5:8.

The Charge Against Israel
4 Hear the word of the Lord, you Israelites,
because the Lord has a charge(A) to bring
against you who live in the land:(B)
“There is no faithfulness,(C) no love,
no acknowledgment(D) of God in the land.(E)
2 There is only cursing,[a] lying(F) and murder,(G)
stealing(H) and adultery;(I)
they break all bounds,
and bloodshed follows bloodshed.(J)
3 Because of this the land dries up,(K)
and all who live in it waste away;(L)
the beasts of the field, the birds in the sky
and the fish in the sea are swept away.(M)
4 “But let no one bring a charge,
let no one accuse another,
for your people are like those
who bring charges against a priest.(N)
5 You stumble(O) day and night,
and the prophets stumble with you.
So I will destroy your mother(P)—
6 my people are destroyed from lack of knowledge.(Q)
“Because you have rejected knowledge,
I also reject you as my priests;
because you have ignored the law(R) of your God,
I also will ignore your children.
7 The more priests there were,
the more they sinned against me;
they exchanged their glorious God[b](S) for something disgraceful.(T)
8 They feed on the sins of my people
and relish their wickedness.(U)
9 And it will be: Like people, like priests.(V)
I will punish both of them for their ways
and repay them for their deeds.(W)
10 “They will eat but not have enough;(X)
they will engage in prostitution(Y) but not flourish,
because they have deserted(Z) the Lord
to give themselves 11 to prostitution;(AA)
old wine(AB) and new wine
take away their understanding.(AC)
12 My people consult a wooden idol,(AD)
and a diviner’s rod speaks to them.(AE)
A spirit of prostitution(AF) leads them astray;(AG)
they are unfaithful(AH) to their God.
13 They sacrifice on the mountaintops
and burn offerings on the hills,
under oak,(AI) poplar and terebinth,
where the shade is pleasant.(AJ)
Therefore your daughters turn to prostitution(AK)
and your daughters-in-law to adultery.(AL)
14 “I will not punish your daughters
when they turn to prostitution,
nor your daughters-in-law
when they commit adultery,
because the men themselves consort with harlots(AM)
and sacrifice with shrine prostitutes(AN)—
a people without understanding(AO) will come to ruin!(AP)
15 “Though you, Israel, commit adultery,
do not let Judah become guilty.
“Do not go to Gilgal;(AQ)
do not go up to Beth Aven.[c](AR)
And do not swear, ‘As surely as the Lord lives!’(AS)
16 The Israelites are stubborn,(AT)
like a stubborn heifer.(AU)
How then can the Lord pasture them
like lambs(AV) in a meadow?
17 Ephraim is joined to idols;
leave him alone!
18 Even when their drinks are gone,
they continue their prostitution;
their rulers dearly love shameful ways.
19 A whirlwind(AW) will sweep them away,
and their sacrifices will bring them shame.(AX)

4 Hear the word of the Lord, ye children of Israel: for the Lord hath a controversy with the inhabitants of the land, because there is no truth, nor mercy, nor knowledge of God in the land.
2 By swearing, and lying, and killing, and stealing, and committing adultery, they break out, and blood toucheth blood.
3 Therefore shall the land mourn, and every one that dwelleth therein shall languish, with the beasts of the field, and with the fowls of heaven; yea, the fishes of the sea also shall be taken away.
4 Yet let no man strive, nor reprove another: for thy people are as they that strive with the priest.
5 Therefore shalt thou fall in the day, and the prophet also shall fall with thee in the night, and I will destroy thy mother.
6 My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge: because thou hast rejected knowledge, I will also reject thee, that thou shalt be no priest to me: seeing thou hast forgotten the law of thy God, I will also forget thy children.
7 As they were increased, so they sinned against me: therefore will I change their glory into shame.
8 They eat up the sin of my people, and they set their heart on their iniquity.
9 And there shall be, like people, like priest: and I will punish them for their ways, and reward them their doings.
10 For they shall eat, and not have enough: they shall commit whoredom, and shall not increase: because they have left off to take heed to the Lord.
11 Whoredom and wine and new wine take away the heart.
12 My people ask counsel at their stocks, and their staff declareth unto them: for the spirit of whoredoms hath caused them to err, and they have gone a whoring from under their God.
13 They sacrifice upon the tops of the mountains, and burn incense upon the hills, under oaks and poplars and elms, because the shadow thereof is good: therefore your daughters shall commit whoredom, and your spouses shall commit adultery.
14 I will not punish your daughters when they commit whoredom, nor your spouses when they commit adultery: for themselves are separated with whores, and they sacrifice with harlots: therefore the people that doth not understand shall fall.
15 Though thou, Israel, play the harlot, yet let not Judah offend; and come not ye unto Gilgal, neither go ye up to Bethaven, nor swear, The Lord liveth.
16 For Israel slideth back as a backsliding heifer: now the Lord will feed them as a lamb in a large place.
17 Ephraim is joined to idols: let him alone.
18 Their drink is sour: they have committed whoredom continually: her rulers with shame do love, Give ye.
19 The wind hath bound her up in her wings, and they shall be ashamed because of their sacrifices.
