8 伯沙撒王在位第三年，在先前显给我的异象之后，再有一个异象向我但以理显现。 2 我在异象中观看，看见自己在以拦省书珊城堡里；我在异象中继续观看，看见自己在乌莱河的岸边。

3 我举目观看，看见一只公绵羊，站在河边；牠有两个角，两角都很高，但高低不一；那较高的角是较迟长出来的。 4 我看见那公绵羊向西、向北、向南撞去，没有走兽能在牠面前站立得住，也没有能拯救脱离牠手的；牠任意而行，狂妄自大。

5 我正在思考的时候，忽然有一只公山羊从西而来，走遍全地，快得脚不沾尘；这山羊两眼之间有一个显眼的角。 6 牠走到我先前所看见站在河边、那有两个角的公绵羊那里去，忿怒地向公绵羊猛力冲去。 7 我看见公山羊走近公绵羊，向牠发怒，撞击牠，折断牠的两个角；公绵羊在牠面前站立不住，牠把公绵羊撞倒在地上，又用脚践踏牠，没有能拯救公绵羊脱离牠手的。 8 这公山羊非常狂妄自大；但在牠强盛的时候，那大角被折断了；在大角原来的地方，有四个显眼的角向天的四方长出来。
9 从这四个角中的一个角，又长出一个小角来，这小角向南、向东和向荣美之地，不断强大起来。 10 牠渐渐长大，高及天象，把一些天象和星星摔落在地上，用脚践踏。 11 牠狂妄自大，要高及天象之君；牠除掉献给天象之君的常献祭，又拆毁他的圣所。 12 因罪过的缘故，圣民（“圣民”和8:10、11的“天象”原文是同一个字）连同常献的祭都交给牠；牠把真理丢在地上，任意而行，凡事顺利。 13 我听见一位圣者在说话，又有一位圣者问他：“这个关于除掉常献的祭，和引致毁坏的罪过，以及践踏圣所和圣民（“圣民”和8:10、11的“天象”原文是同一个字）的异象，要到几时呢？” 14 他对我说：“要到二千三百个晚上和早晨，圣所才得洁净。”

15 我但以理看见了这异象以后，就想明白它的意义；忽然有一位外貌像人的，站在我面前。 16 我又听见从乌莱河两岸之间，有人的声音呼叫着说：“加百列啊！你要使这人明白这异象。” 17 他就来到我所站的地方；他来到的时候，我就害怕，脸伏在地；他对我说：“人子啊，你要明白！这异象是关于末后的时期的。” 18 他和我说话的时候，我沉睡了，脸伏在地；他触摸我，使我站起来。 19 他说：“看哪！我要告诉你在 神忿怒审判的后期必要发生的事，因为这是有关那末后的定期的。 20 你所看见那有两个角的公绵羊，就是玛代和波斯王。 21 那多毛的公山羊就是希腊王；那两眼之间的大角就是第一个王。 22 至于代替那折断了的角，在牠原来的地方长出来的四个角，就是四个要从他的国中兴起的王国，只是没有他的权势。

他必毁灭有强力的，
又毁灭圣民。
25 他运用诡计，
行骗无往而不利；
他心里狂妄自大；
他必乘人不备的时候，毁灭许多人；
他要起来攻击万君之君，
最后却非因人的手被毁灭。
26 关于所说二千三百个晚上和早晨的异象是真的，
但你要把这异象封住，
因为那是关于将来许多的年日的。”
27 我但以理精疲力竭，病了几天，后来我起来，办理王的事务，但我仍因这异象惊骇不已，不明白它的意思。

Daniels zweite Vision vom Schafbock und Ziegenbock
8 Im 3. Regierungsjahr von König Belsazar hatte ich, Daniel, eine zweite Vision: 2 Dabei sah ich mich selbst in der königlichen Residenz Susa in der Provinz Elam. Ich stand am Ulai-Kanal, 3 und als ich mich umschaute, entdeckte ich am Ufer einen Schafbock. Er hatte zwei lange Hörner; das eine war größer als das andere, obwohl es erst später gewachsen war. 4 Ich sah, wie der Schafbock mit seinen Hörnern nach Westen, Norden und Süden Stöße austeilte. Kein Tier konnte sich ihm widersetzen, und wenn er eines in seiner Gewalt hatte, konnte niemand mehr helfen. Er tat, was er wollte, und wurde immer mächtiger.
5 Während ich noch darüber nachdachte, was dies zu bedeuten hatte, kam plötzlich ein Ziegenbock vom Westen her über die ganze Erde. Er lief so schnell, dass er kaum den Boden berührte. Zwischen den Augen hatte er ein auffällig starkes Horn. 6 Als er bei dem Schafbock angelangt war, den ich am Kanal gesehen hatte, stürzte er sich mit voller Wucht auf ihn 7 und griff ihn an. Die zwei kämpften erbittert, bis der Ziegenbock seinem Feind beide Hörner abbrach. Der Schafbock hatte keine Kraft mehr, sich zu wehren, er wurde zu Boden geworfen und zertrampelt. Niemand kam ihm zu Hilfe.
8 Jetzt wurde der Ziegenbock noch mächtiger, doch auf dem Höhepunkt seiner Macht brach das große Horn ab. An seiner Stelle kamen vier andere Hörner zum Vorschein, die in alle vier Himmelsrichtungen wuchsen. 9 Aus einem von ihnen brach noch ein weiteres Horn hervor. Zuerst war es sehr klein, aber dann wuchs es immer mehr nach Süden, nach Osten und in Richtung Israel, des herrlichen Landes. 10 Ja, es erreichte sogar die Mächte des Himmels, warf einige von ihnen und von den Sternen auf die Erde hinunter und zertrat sie. 11 Selbst den Herrn des Himmels forderte es heraus, denn es schaffte die regelmäßigen Opfer ab, die ihm dargebracht wurden, und entweihte seinen Tempel. 12 Es setzte ein ganzes Heer ein, das die täglichen Opfer mit Gewalt unterbinden sollte.[a] So trat es die Wahrheit mit Füßen, und was immer es unternahm, gelang ihm.
13 Dann hörte ich, wie ein Engel einen anderen fragte: »Wie lange wird all das dauern, was in der Vision zu sehen war? Wann wird man Gott wieder die regelmäßigen Opfer darbringen können? Wann hat die Auflehnung gegen den Herrn des Himmels und die schreckliche Entweihung des Tempels ein Ende?« 14 Der andere Engel antwortete: »Erst nach 2300 Tagen[b] wird das Heiligtum wieder neu geweiht werden.«
15 Ich dachte noch über das Gesehene nach, als plötzlich jemand vor mir stand, der wie ein Mann aussah. 16 Gleichzeitig hörte ich, wie eine Stimme vom Ulai-Kanal ihm zurief: »Gabriel, erkläre du ihm die Vision!« 17 Der Engel trat ganz nahe an mich heran. Ich erschrak und fiel vor ihm zu Boden. Er aber sagte zu mir: »Du Mensch, hör genau zu: Dir wurde vor Augen geführt, was in der fernen Zukunft geschehen wird.«
18 Während er so zu mir sprach, lag ich wie betäubt am Boden mit dem Gesicht nach unten. Doch der Engel berührte mich und half mir wieder auf die Beine. 19 Dann sagte er: »Ich will dir erklären, was sich ereignet, wenn Gottes Zorn losbricht und das Ende kommt. Die Zeit dafür ist schon festgelegt. 20 Der Schafbock mit den beiden Hörnern ist das Reich der Meder und Perser mit ihren Herrschern. 21 Der zottige Ziegenbock ist das Reich der Griechen, und das große Horn zwischen den Augen des Bocks der erste König dieses Reiches. 22 Du hast gesehen, wie das Horn abbrach und an seiner Stelle vier andere nachwuchsen. Dies bedeutet, dass aus dem einen Königreich vier andere entstehen werden. Sie werden aber nicht so mächtig sein wie das erste. 23 Am Ende ihrer Herrschaft wird die Gottlosigkeit überhandnehmen und das Maß der Schuld voll sein.
Dann kommt ein rücksichtsloser und hinterhältiger König 24 und erlangt große Macht, wenn auch nicht aus eigener Kraft. Schreckliches Verderben richtet er an, und was er unternimmt, das hat Erfolg. Er schaltet mächtige Herrscher aus, sogar Gottes heiliges Volk stürzt er ins Verderben. 25 Weil er so schlau und gerissen ist, gelingt es ihm, die Menschen zu täuschen. In seinem Größenwahn bringt er viele ohne jede Warnung um. Selbst dem höchsten Herrn stellt er sich entgegen, doch schließlich wird er ohne menschliches Zutun vernichtet.
26 Hör zu, Daniel! Alles, was du über die 2300 Tage erfahren hast, wird eintreffen. Behalte die Vision genau im Gedächtnis! Denn es dauert noch lange, bis sie sich ganz erfüllt hat.«
27 Danach war ich völlig erschöpft und tagelang krank. Als es mir besser ging, nahm ich meinen Dienst beim König wieder auf. Doch ich war noch immer entsetzt über die Vision und konnte sie mir nicht erklären.

Daniel’s Vision of a Ram and a Goat
8 In the third year of King Belshazzar’s(A) reign, I, Daniel, had a vision,(B) after the one that had already appeared to me. 2 In my vision I saw myself in the citadel of Susa(C) in the province of Elam;(D) in the vision I was beside the Ulai Canal. 3 I looked up,(E) and there before me was a ram(F) with two horns, standing beside the canal, and the horns were long. One of the horns was longer than the other but grew up later. 4 I watched the ram as it charged toward the west and the north and the south. No animal could stand against it, and none could rescue from its power.(G) It did as it pleased(H) and became great.
5 As I was thinking about this, suddenly a goat with a prominent horn between its eyes came from the west, crossing the whole earth without touching the ground. 6 It came toward the two-horned ram I had seen standing beside the canal and charged at it in great rage. 7 I saw it attack the ram furiously, striking the ram and shattering its two horns. The ram was powerless to stand against it; the goat knocked it to the ground and trampled on it,(I) and none could rescue the ram from its power.(J) 8 The goat became very great, but at the height of its power the large horn was broken off,(K) and in its place four prominent horns grew up toward the four winds of heaven.(L)
9 Out of one of them came another horn, which started small(M) but grew in power to the south and to the east and toward the Beautiful Land.(N) 10 It grew until it reached(O) the host of the heavens, and it threw some of the starry host down to the earth(P) and trampled(Q) on them. 11 It set itself up to be as great as the commander(R) of the army of the Lord;(S) it took away the daily sacrifice(T) from the Lord, and his sanctuary was thrown down.(U) 12 Because of rebellion, the Lord’s people[a] and the daily sacrifice were given over to it. It prospered in everything it did, and truth was thrown to the ground.(V)
13 Then I heard a holy one(W) speaking, and another holy one said to him, “How long will it take for the vision to be fulfilled(X)—the vision concerning the daily sacrifice, the rebellion that causes desolation, the surrender of the sanctuary and the trampling underfoot(Y) of the Lord’s people?”
14 He said to me, “It will take 2,300 evenings and mornings; then the sanctuary will be reconsecrated.”(Z)
The Interpretation of the Vision
15 While I, Daniel, was watching the vision(AA) and trying to understand it, there before me stood one who looked like a man.(AB) 16 And I heard a man’s voice from the Ulai(AC) calling, “Gabriel,(AD) tell this man the meaning of the vision.”(AE)
17 As he came near the place where I was standing, I was terrified and fell prostrate.(AF) “Son of man,”[b] he said to me, “understand that the vision concerns the time of the end.”(AG)
18 While he was speaking to me, I was in a deep sleep, with my face to the ground.(AH) Then he touched me and raised me to my feet.(AI)
19 He said: “I am going to tell you what will happen later in the time of wrath,(AJ) because the vision concerns the appointed time(AK) of the end.[c](AL) 20 The two-horned ram that you saw represents the kings of Media and Persia.(AM) 21 The shaggy goat is the king of Greece,(AN) and the large horn between its eyes is the first king.(AO) 22 The four horns that replaced the one that was broken off represent four kingdoms that will emerge from his nation but will not have the same power.
23 “In the latter part of their reign, when rebels have become completely wicked, a fierce-looking king, a master of intrigue, will arise. 24 He will become very strong, but not by his own power. He will cause astounding devastation and will succeed in whatever he does. He will destroy those who are mighty, the holy people.(AP) 25 He will cause deceit(AQ) to prosper, and he will consider himself superior. When they feel secure, he will destroy many and take his stand against the Prince of princes.(AR) Yet he will be destroyed, but not by human power.(AS)
26 “The vision of the evenings and mornings that has been given you is true,(AT) but seal(AU) up the vision, for it concerns the distant future.”(AV)
27 I, Daniel, was worn out. I lay exhausted(AW) for several days. Then I got up and went about the king’s business.(AX) I was appalled(AY) by the vision; it was beyond understanding.

8 In the third year of the reign of King Belshazzar a vision appeared to me, Daniel, after the one that appeared to me at the first.
2 And I saw in the vision and it seemed that I was at Shushan the palace or fortress [in Susa, the capital of Persia], which is in the province of Elam, and I saw in the vision and I was by the river of Ulai.
3 And I lifted up my eyes and saw, and behold, there stood before the river a [single] ram which had two horns [representing two kings of Medo-Persia: Darius the Mede, then Cyrus]; and the two horns were high, but one [Persia] was higher than the other, and the higher one came up last.
4 I looked and saw the ram [Medo-Persia] pushing and charging westward and northward and southward; no beast could stand before him, neither could anyone rescue from his power, but he did according to his [own] will and pleasure and magnified himself.(A)
5 As I was considering, behold, a he-goat [the king of Greece] came from the west across the face of the whole earth without touching the ground, and the goat had a conspicuous and remarkable horn between his eyes [symbolizing Alexander the Great].(B)
6 And he came to the ram that had the two horns which I had seen standing on the bank of the river and ran at him in the heat of his power.
7 [In my vision] I saw him come close to the ram [Medo-Persia], and he was moved with anger against him and he [Alexander the Great] struck the ram and broke his two horns; and there was no power in the ram to stand before him, but the goat threw him to the ground and trampled on him. And there was no one who could rescue the ram from his power.
8 And the he-goat [Alexander the Great] magnified himself exceedingly, and when he was [young and] strong, the [a]great horn [he] was [suddenly] broken; and instead of [him] there came up four notable horns [to whom the kingdom was divided, one] toward [each of] the four winds of the heavens.
9 Out of littleness and small beginnings one of them came forth [Antiochus Epiphanes], a [b]horn whose [impious presumption and pride] grew exceedingly great toward the south and toward the east and toward the ornament [the precious, blessed land of Israel].(C)
10 And [in my vision this horn] grew great, even against the host of heaven [God’s true people, the saints], and some of the host and of the stars [priests] it cast down to the ground and trampled on them,
11 Yes, [this horn] magnified itself, even [matching itself] against the Prince of the host [of heaven]; and from Him the continual [burnt offering] was taken away and the place of [God’s] sanctuary was cast down and profaned.
12 And the host [the chosen people] was given [to the wicked horn] together with the continual burnt offering because of the transgression [of God’s people—their abounding irreverence, ungodliness, and lack of piety]. And righteousness and truth were cast down to the ground, and it [the wicked horn] accomplished this [by divine permission] and prospered.
13 Then I heard a holy one speaking, and another holy one said to the one that spoke, For how long is the vision concerning the continual offering, the transgression that makes desolate, and the giving over of both the sanctuary and the host [of the people] to be trampled underfoot?(D)
14 And he said to him and to me, For 2,300 evenings and mornings; then the sanctuary shall be cleansed and restored.
15 When I, even I, Daniel, had seen the vision, I sought to understand it; then behold, there stood before me one [Gabriel] with the appearance of a man.
16 And I heard a man’s voice between the banks of the [river] Ulai which called and said, Gabriel, make this man [Daniel] understand the vision.(E)
17 So he came near where I stood, and when he came, I was frightened and fell on my face. But he said to me, Understand, O son of man, for the [fulfillment of the] vision belongs to [events that shall occur in] the time of the end.
18 Now as he [Gabriel] was speaking with me, I fell stunned and in deep unconsciousness with my face to the ground; but he touched me and set me upright [where I had stood].
19 And he said, Behold, I will make you know what will be in the latter time of the indignation [of God upon the ungodly], for it has to do with the time of the end.
20 The ram you saw having two horns, they are the kings of Media and Persia.
21 And the shaggy and rough he-goat is the king of Greece, and the great horn between his eyes is the first king [who consolidated the whole realm, Alexander the Great].
22 And as for the horn which was shattered, in whose place four others arose, four kingdoms shall arise out of his nation but not having his [Alexander’s] power.
23 And at the latter end of their kingdom, when the transgressors [the apostate Jews] have reached the fullness [of their wickedness, taxing the limits of God’s mercy], a king of fierce countenance and understanding dark trickery and craftiness shall stand up.
24 And his power shall be mighty, but not by his own power; and he shall corrupt and destroy astonishingly and shall prosper and do his own pleasure, and he shall corrupt and destroy the mighty men and the holy people (the people of the saints).(F)
25 And through his policy he shall cause trickery to prosper in his hand; he shall magnify himself in his heart and mind, and in their security he will corrupt and destroy many. He shall also stand up against the Prince of princes, but he shall be broken and that by no [human] hand.(G)
26 The vision of the evenings and the mornings which has been told you is true. But seal up the vision, for it has to do with and belongs to the [now] distant future.
27 And I, Daniel, fainted and was sick [for several] days. Afterward I rose up and did the king’s business; and I wondered at the vision, but there was no one who understood it or could make it understood.

- Daniel 8:8 Alexander the Great suddenly died at the height of his power, and his empire was divided into four parts—east, west, north, and south—ruled over by his four generals.
- Daniel 8:9 This horn of Dan. 8:9-12 is not to be confused with the “little horn” of Dan. 7:8. This one is a prophetic forecast of Antiochus Epiphanes, who came out of Syria, one of the four dynasties into which Alexander’s empire was divided, and became a great conqueror. Hating God, he profaned the temple and persecuted the Jews terribly. However, he serves as a type of the “little horn” of Dan. 7:8, the even more ruthless beast of the last days (Rev. 13:4-9).
