5 伯沙撒王盛宴款待一千大臣，与他们一同饮酒。 2 王畅饮的时候，命人将先王尼布甲尼撒从耶路撒冷圣殿中掳来的金银器皿拿来，供他与大臣、王后和妃嫔用来饮酒。 3 于是，他们把从耶路撒冷上帝殿中掳来的金器拿来，王与大臣、王后和妃嫔便用这些器皿饮酒。 4 他们一边饮酒，一边颂赞金、银、铜、铁、木、石所造的神明。
5 突然，有人手的指头出现，在灯台对面王宫的粉墙上写字。王看见那只手在写字， 6 脸色骤变，惊恐万分，两腿发软，双膝颤抖。 7 他大声传令，召来巫师、占星家和占卜者，对这些巴比伦的智者说：“谁能读墙上的字，把意思告诉我，他必身穿紫袍，颈戴金链，在国中位居第三。” 8 王所有的智者进来后，竟无人能读懂或把意思告诉王。 9 伯沙撒王愈发恐惧，脸色苍白，他的大臣都不知所措。
10 太后听到王和大臣的喊声，便来到宴会厅，对王说：“愿王万岁！不要惊慌失色。 11 你国中有一个人，他有圣洁神明的灵。先王在世时，曾发现他有神明一样的灼见、悟性和智慧。先王尼布甲尼撒立他为术士、巫师、占星家和占卜者的首领。 12 他有非凡的心智、知识和悟性，能解梦、释谜、解惑。他叫但以理，先王给他取名叫伯提沙撒。现在可以把他召来，他必能解释这些字的意思。”
13 于是，但以理被带到王面前。王问他：“你就是先王从犹大掳来的但以理吗？ 14 我听说你有神明的灵，有灼见、悟性和非凡的智慧。 15 我召智者和巫师来读这些字，为我解释字的意思，但他们都不能解释。 16 我听说你能释梦、解惑。你若能读出墙上的字，把意思告诉我，你必身穿紫袍、颈戴金链，在我的国中位居第三。”
17 但以理回答说：“你的礼物自己留着，你的赏赐可以给别人，不过我会为你读这些字，解释意思。 18 王啊，至高的上帝曾将国位、权力、尊荣、威严赐给你的先王尼布甲尼撒， 19 因为他有上帝所赐的大权，各族、各邦、各语种的人都在他面前战抖，充满恐惧。他操生杀大权，可随意擢升、罢黜。 20 但他变得心高气傲、刚愎自用、狂妄自大，因而被革除王位、剥去尊荣。 21 他从人群中被赶走，他的心变成兽心，他与野驴同住，像牛一样吃草，被天上的露水浸湿，直到他知道至高的上帝主宰世上万国，祂要把国赐给谁就赐给谁。
22 “伯沙撒啊，你是他的后裔，你虽然知道这一切事，仍不谦卑， 23 竟在天上的主面前自大，命人拿来祂殿里的器皿，供你和大臣、王后、妃嫔用来饮酒，并颂赞不能看、不能听、一无所知、用金、银、铜、铁、木、石所造的神明，却不尊崇赐你生命气息、掌管你一举一动的上帝。
24 “因此，上帝使指头出现，写下这些字， 25 就是‘弥尼，弥尼，提客勒，乌法珥新’。 26 这些字的意思是这样，弥尼——指上帝已经数算你国度的年日，使之到此为止； 27 提客勒——指你已经被放在秤上称了，发现分量不够； 28 乌法珥新[a]——指你的国要分裂，归给玛代人和波斯人。”
29 于是，伯沙撒下令给但以理穿上紫袍，戴上金项链，又宣告他在国中位居第三。 30 当夜，迦勒底王伯沙撒被杀。 31 玛代人大流士六十二岁时夺取了王权。

5 Kong Belshazzar af Babylonien holdt engang en stor fest for 1000 af sine højtstående embedsmænd, og de tog rigeligt for sig af de våde varer. 2 Påvirket af vinen gav Belshazzar ordre til, at man skulle hente de guld- og sølvbægre, som hans berømte forgænger, Nebukadnezar, havde taget som krigsbytte fra templet i Jerusalem, så han selv, hans embedsmænd, hans koner og medhustruer kunne drikke af dem. 3-4 Guld- og sølvbægrene, der stammede fra templet i Jerusalem, blev så hentet, og kongen, hans embedsmænd, hans koner og medhustruer drak af dem, alt imens de skålede for deres afguder af guld og sølv, bronze og jern, træ og sten.
5 Men pludselig kom en menneskehånd til syne, og den skrev noget på paladsets væg lige over for lysestagen. Da kongen så hånden, der skrev, 6 blev han bleg som et lagen. Han var så skrækslagen, at hans knæ rystede, og hans ben dårligt kunne bære ham. 7 „Få fat i alle mine astrologer, præster, spåmænd og vismænd!” råbte han. Og da de ankom til paladset, sagde han til dem: „Den, der kan læse skriften på væggen og forklare, hvad det betyder, skal blive klædt i kongelige purpurklæder, få en guldkæde om halsen og blive udnævnt til rigets tredjemægtigste mand.”
8 Alle kongens vismænd strømmede nu ind i salen, men ingen af dem kunne læse skriften eller forklare betydningen. 9 Det gjorde kong Belshazzar endnu mere bange. Også embedsmændene var lamslåede.
10 Ved al den råben og ståhej kom enkedronningen ind i festsalen. „Deres Majestæt længe leve!” sagde hun. „Du behøver ikke at se så bleg og forskræmt ud! 11 Der er en mand her i dit rige, som har de hellige guders ånd i sig. Han er så fyldt med viden, visdom og indsigt, at man skulle tro, han var en gud. Derfor gjorde kong Nebukadnezar ham til overhoved for alle astrologerne, præsterne, spåmændene og vismændene i Babylonien. 12 Hans navn er Daniel, eller Belteshazzar, som Nebukadnezar plejede at kalde ham. Få fat i ham, for han er fyldt med overnaturlig kundskab og indsigt. Han kan tyde drømme, løse gåder og opklare indviklede mysterier. Han skal nok fortælle dig, hvad skriften betyder.”
13 Daniel blev straks hentet og ført frem for kongen. „Er du den Daniel, som kong Nebukadnezar førte hertil som fange fra Juda?” spurgte Belshazzar. 14 „Det siges, at gudernes ånd bor i dig, og at du har enestående viden, indsigt og visdom. 15 Alle mine vismænd og astrologer har været her og forsøgt at læse skriften på væggen dér, så de kunne fortælle mig, hvad der står, men de var ikke i stand til det. 16 Men jeg hører, at du kan tyde drømme og løse indviklede mysterier. Hvis du kan læse skriften og fortælle mig betydningen af ordene, vil jeg klæde dig i kongelige purpurklæder og hænge en guldkæde om din hals, og du skal blive rigets tredjemægtigste mand.”
17 „Jeg skal gerne læse skriften for Deres Majestæt og forklare, hvad den betyder,” svarede Daniel. „Men behold blot Deres gaver eller giv dem til en anden. 18 Lyt til mine ord, Deres Majestæt! Den almægtige Gud gav i sin tid Deres forgænger Nebukadnezar magt og herredømme, ære og herlighed. 19 Alverdens folkeslag levede i frygt for ham, for han henrettede eller benådede folk efter forgodtbefindende. Han forfremmede nogle og fratog andre deres stilling, akkurat som han havde lyst til. 20 Men da han blev hovmodig, stolt og indbildsk, stødte Gud ham fra tronen og fratog ham al ære og værdighed. 21 Han blev udstødt af menneskenes samfund og levede som et dyr hos vildæslerne. Han spiste græs som kvæget og levede under åben himmel, indtil han langt om længe erkendte, at den almægtige Gud er herre over alle jordiske konger, og at Gud udvælger, hvem han vil, til at herske og regere.
22 Deres Majestæt, De ved, hvad der skete med Nebukadnezar, men alligevel har De ikke ydmyget Dem for Himlens Gud! 23 Tværtimod har De vist foragt for ham! De beordrede, at man skulle hente sølv- og guldbægrene fra hans tempel, og sammen med Deres embedsmænd, koner og medhustruer drak De af dem og skålede for Deres afguder af guld og sølv, bronze og jern, træ og sten, afguder, som hverken kan høre eller se eller fatte noget som helst. Men den Gud, som har magten over Deres liv og fremtid, viste De ingen ære! 24 Derfor sendte han hånden, der skrev ordene på væggen. 25 Der står: MENÉ, MENÉ, TEKÉL og PARSÍN[a]
26 MENÉ (talt) betyder: Gud har talt Deres riges dage og gjort ende på dem.
27 TEKÉL (vejet) betyder: De er blevet vejet på Guds vægt og fundet for let.
28 PARSÍN (delt) betyder: Deres rige skal deles mellem Medien og Persien.”
29 På Belshazzars befaling blev Daniel derefter klædt i kongelige purpurklæder, en guldkæde blev hængt om hans hals, og han blev udnævnt til rigets tredjemægtigste mand. 30 Allerede samme nat blev kong Belshazzar dræbt.

- 5,25 Ordene er i sig selv ikke så vanskelige at forstå. MENÉ betyder „talt” og gentages to gange for at vise, at sagen allerede er afgjort. TEKÉL minder om både „vejet” og „fundet for let”, mens PARSÍN hentyder både til „deling” og „Persien”. Det største problem var at tyde gåden.

King James Version
5 Belshazzar the king made a great feast to a thousand of his lords, and drank wine before the thousand.
2 Belshazzar, whiles he tasted the wine, commanded to bring the golden and silver vessels which his father Nebuchadnezzar had taken out of the temple which was in Jerusalem; that the king, and his princes, his wives, and his concubines, might drink therein.
3 Then they brought the golden vessels that were taken out of the temple of the house of God which was at Jerusalem; and the king, and his princes, his wives, and his concubines, drank in them.
4 They drank wine, and praised the gods of gold, and of silver, of brass, of iron, of wood, and of stone.
5 In the same hour came forth fingers of a man's hand, and wrote over against the candlestick upon the plaister of the wall of the king's palace: and the king saw the part of the hand that wrote.
6 Then the king's countenance was changed, and his thoughts troubled him, so that the joints of his loins were loosed, and his knees smote one against another.
7 The king cried aloud to bring in the astrologers, the Chaldeans, and the soothsayers. And the king spake, and said to the wise men of Babylon, Whosoever shall read this writing, and shew me the interpretation thereof, shall be clothed with scarlet, and have a chain of gold about his neck, and shall be the third ruler in the kingdom.
8 Then came in all the king's wise men: but they could not read the writing, nor make known to the king the interpretation thereof.
9 Then was king Belshazzar greatly troubled, and his countenance was changed in him, and his lords were astonied.
10 Now the queen by reason of the words of the king and his lords came into the banquet house: and the queen spake and said, O king, live for ever: let not thy thoughts trouble thee, nor let thy countenance be changed:
11 There is a man in thy kingdom, in whom is the spirit of the holy gods; and in the days of thy father light and understanding and wisdom, like the wisdom of the gods, was found in him; whom the king Nebuchadnezzar thy father, the king, I say, thy father, made master of the magicians, astrologers, Chaldeans, and soothsayers;
12 Forasmuch as an excellent spirit, and knowledge, and understanding, interpreting of dreams, and shewing of hard sentences, and dissolving of doubts, were found in the same Daniel, whom the king named Belteshazzar: now let Daniel be called, and he will shew the interpretation.
13 Then was Daniel brought in before the king. And the king spake and said unto Daniel, Art thou that Daniel, which art of the children of the captivity of Judah, whom the king my father brought out of Jewry?
14 I have even heard of thee, that the spirit of the gods is in thee, and that light and understanding and excellent wisdom is found in thee.
15 And now the wise men, the astrologers, have been brought in before me, that they should read this writing, and make known unto me the interpretation thereof: but they could not shew the interpretation of the thing:
16 And I have heard of thee, that thou canst make interpretations, and dissolve doubts: now if thou canst read the writing, and make known to me the interpretation thereof, thou shalt be clothed with scarlet, and have a chain of gold about thy neck, and shalt be the third ruler in the kingdom.
17 Then Daniel answered and said before the king, Let thy gifts be to thyself, and give thy rewards to another; yet I will read the writing unto the king, and make known to him the interpretation.
18 O thou king, the most high God gave Nebuchadnezzar thy father a kingdom, and majesty, and glory, and honour:
19 And for the majesty that he gave him, all people, nations, and languages, trembled and feared before him: whom he would he slew; and whom he would he kept alive; and whom he would he set up; and whom he would he put down.
20 But when his heart was lifted up, and his mind hardened in pride, he was deposed from his kingly throne, and they took his glory from him:
21 And he was driven from the sons of men; and his heart was made like the beasts, and his dwelling was with the wild asses: they fed him with grass like oxen, and his body was wet with the dew of heaven; till he knew that the most high God ruled in the kingdom of men, and that he appointeth over it whomsoever he will.
22 And thou his son, O Belshazzar, hast not humbled thine heart, though thou knewest all this;
23 But hast lifted up thyself against the Lord of heaven; and they have brought the vessels of his house before thee, and thou, and thy lords, thy wives, and thy concubines, have drunk wine in them; and thou hast praised the gods of silver, and gold, of brass, iron, wood, and stone, which see not, nor hear, nor know: and the God in whose hand thy breath is, and whose are all thy ways, hast thou not glorified:
24 Then was the part of the hand sent from him; and this writing was written.
25 And this is the writing that was written, Mene, Mene, Tekel, Upharsin.
26 This is the interpretation of the thing: Mene; God hath numbered thy kingdom, and finished it.
27 Tekel; Thou art weighed in the balances, and art found wanting.
28 Peres; Thy kingdom is divided, and given to the Medes and Persians.
29 Then commanded Belshazzar, and they clothed Daniel with scarlet, and put a chain of gold about his neck, and made a proclamation concerning him, that he should be the third ruler in the kingdom.
30 In that night was Belshazzar the king of the Chaldeans slain.
31 And Darius the Median took the kingdom, being about threescore and two years old.
