伯沙撒王大宴群臣

5 伯沙撒王為他的一千大臣大擺筵席，他和他們一同喝酒。 2 伯沙撒喝酒歡暢的時候，下令把他先祖尼布甲尼撒從耶路撒冷聖殿裡掠取的金銀器皿拿來，好讓他和他的大臣、妻妾、妃嬪用這些器皿來喝酒。 3 於是人把從耶路撒冷聖殿裡，就是　神的殿裡，掠來的金器皿拿來；王和他的大臣、妻妾、妃嬪就用這些器皿來喝酒。 4 他們喝酒，讚美那些用金、銀、銅、鐵、木、石所做的神。

指頭在牆上寫字

5 當時，忽然有人手的指頭出現，在王宮裡燈臺對面的粉牆上寫字；王看見了那隻正在寫字的手掌， 6 就臉色大變，心意驚惶，兩腳無力，雙膝彼此相碰。 7 王大聲呼叫，吩咐人把那些用法術的和迦勒底人，以及占星家都領進來；王對巴比倫的智慧人說：“誰能讀這文字，又能向我解釋它的意思，他必身穿紫袍，頸戴金鍊，在國中掌權，位列第三。” 8 於是王所有的智慧人都進來，卻不能讀那文字，也不能把意思向王說明。 9 伯沙撒王就非常驚惶，臉色大變；他的大臣也都不知所措。

太后舉薦但以理

10 太后因王和他的大臣所說的話，就進入宴會的大廳，對王說：“願王萬歲！你的心意不要驚惶，也不要臉色大變。 11 在你國中有一個人，他裡面有聖神的靈；你先祖在世的日子，發現這人有灼見，有聰明，有智慧，好像神的智慧一樣。你先祖尼布甲尼撒王，就是王的先祖，曾立他為術士、用法術的，以及迦勒底人和占星家的領袖。 12 這都因為在這但以理裡面有美好的靈性，有知識，有聰明，能解夢，釋謎語，能解答難題；這人尼布甲尼撒王曾給他起名叫伯提沙撒。現在可以把但以理召來，他必能解釋牆上文字的意思。”

13 於是但以理被帶到王面前，王問但以理說：“你就是我先王從猶大擄來的猶大人但以理嗎？ 14 我聽說你裡面有神的靈，有灼見，有聰明，有高超的智慧。 15 現在智慧人和用法術的都被帶到我面前了，我要他們讀這文字，把文字的意思向我說明，可是他們都不能解釋這文字的意思。 16 我聽說你能解釋異夢，也能解答難題。現在你若能讀這文字，把它的意思向我說明，就必身穿紫袍，頸戴金鍊，在國中掌權，位列第三。”

但以理直言責王

17 但以理在王面前回答說：“你的禮物可以歸你自己，你的賞賜可以歸給別人；我卻要為王讀這文字，也要把意思向王說明。 18 王啊！至高的　神曾把國位、權勢、光榮和威嚴賜給你先祖尼布甲尼撒。 19 因　神所賜給他的權勢，各國、各族和說各種語言的人，都在他面前戰兢恐懼；他要殺誰，就殺誰；要誰活著，誰就可以活著；要提升誰，就提升誰；要貶低誰，就貶低誰。 20 但他心高氣傲、妄自尊大的時候，就從國位上被趕下來，他的尊榮也被奪去。 21 他被趕逐，離開人群，他的心變如獸心，他和野驢同住，像牛一樣吃草，身體被天露滴濕；等到他承認至高的　神在世人的國中掌權，他喜歡誰，就立誰執掌國權。 22 伯沙撒啊！你是他的子孫，你雖然知道這一切，你的心仍不謙卑， 23 竟高抬自己，敵對天上的主，使人把他殿中的器皿拿到你面前來，你和你的大臣、妻妾、妃嬪用這些器皿喝酒；你又讚美那些不能看見、不能聽見、甚麼都不能知道，用金、銀、銅、鐵、木、石所做的神，卻沒有把榮耀歸給那手中有你的氣息，和那掌管你一切命途的　神。 24 因此，有手從　神那裡伸出來，寫了這文字。

解釋牆上文字的意義

25 “所寫的文字是：‘彌尼，彌尼，提客勒，烏法珥新。’ 26 這文字的意思是這樣：‘彌尼’就是　神已數算了你國度的年日，使國終止； 27 ‘提客勒’就是你被稱在天平上，顯出你的缺欠； 28 ‘毘勒斯’（“毘勒斯”即“烏法珥新”的單數式）就是你的國要分裂，歸給瑪代人和波斯人。”

29 於是伯沙撒下令，人就把紫袍給但以理穿上，把金鍊戴在他的頸上，又宣告他在國中掌權，位列第三。

伯沙撒王被殺而亡國

30 當夜，迦勒底人的王伯沙撒被殺。 31 瑪代人大利烏奪取了迦勒底國；那時他六十二歲。（本節在《馬索拉文本》為6:1）

13 于是，但以理被带到王面前。王问他：“你就是先王从犹大掳来的但以理吗？ 14 我听说你有神明的灵，有灼见、悟性和非凡的智慧。 15 我召智者和巫师来读这些字，为我解释字的意思，但他们都不能解释。 16 我听说你能释梦、解惑。你若能读出墙上的字，把意思告诉我，你必身穿紫袍、颈戴金链，在我的国中位居第三。”

17 但以理回答说：“你的礼物自己留着，你的赏赐可以给别人，不过我会为你读这些字，解释意思。 18 王啊，至高的上帝曾将国位、权力、尊荣、威严赐给你的先王尼布甲尼撒， 19 因为他有上帝所赐的大权，各族、各邦、各语种的人都在他面前战抖，充满恐惧。他操生杀大权，可随意擢升、罢黜。 20 但他变得心高气傲、刚愎自用、狂妄自大，因而被革除王位、剥去尊荣。 21 他从人群中被赶走，他的心变成兽心，他与野驴同住，像牛一样吃草，被天上的露水浸湿，直到他知道至高的上帝主宰世上万国，祂要把国赐给谁就赐给谁。

22 “伯沙撒啊，你是他的后裔，你虽然知道这一切事，仍不谦卑， 23 竟在天上的主面前自大，命人拿来祂殿里的器皿，供你和大臣、王后、妃嫔用来饮酒，并颂赞不能看、不能听、一无所知、用金、银、铜、铁、木、石所造的神明，却不尊崇赐你生命气息、掌管你一举一动的上帝。

24 “因此，上帝使指头出现，写下这些字， 25 就是‘弥尼，弥尼，提客勒，乌法珥新’。 26 这些字的意思是这样，弥尼——指上帝已经数算你国度的年日，使之到此为止； 27 提客勒——指你已经被放在秤上称了，发现分量不够； 28 乌法珥新[a]——指你的国要分裂，归给玛代人和波斯人。”

29 于是，伯沙撒下令给但以理穿上紫袍，戴上金项链，又宣告他在国中位居第三。 30 当夜，迦勒底王伯沙撒被杀。 31 玛代人大流士六十二岁时夺取了王权。

The Handwriting on the Wall at Belshazzar’s Banquet

5 King Belshazzar made a great feast for a thousand of his nobles, and in front of the thousand he drank wine. 2 When he had tasted the wine, Belshazzar said to bring the gold and silver vessels that his father[a] Nebuchadnezzar had taken from the temple in Jerusalem, so that the king and his nobles, his wives and his concubines could drink from them. 3 Then they brought the gold vessels that they had taken from the temple, that is, the House of God in Jerusalem. So the king and his nobles, his wives and his concubines drank from them. 4 They drank wine and praised the gods of gold and silver, of bronze, iron, wood, and stone.

5 At that moment the fingers of a human hand appeared and wrote on the plaster of the wall of the king’s palace, opposite the lampstand, and the king saw the back of the hand that was writing. 6 Then the king’s cheerful appearance changed, his face grew pale,[b] and his thoughts troubled him. His legs went limp, and his knees knocked together.

7 The king called out loudly to bring the spell casters, the astrologers, and the diviners. The king said to the wise men of Babylon, “Whoever is able to read this writing and explain its meaning will be clothed in purple, with a gold chain around his neck, and he will rule as third highest in the kingdom.”

8 Then all the king’s wise men came in, but they were not able to read the writing or tell the king what it meant. 9 Then King Belshazzar was really terrified. He grew even paler, and his nobles were perplexed.

10 The queen[c] came to the drinking party[d] because of the words of the king and his nobles. The queen said, “Your Majesty, may you live forever! Do not let your thoughts trouble you, and do not look so frightened. 11 There is a man in your kingdom in whom is a spirit of the holy gods. In the days of your father, enlightenment, insight, and wisdom like the wisdom of the gods were found in him. So King Nebuchadnezzar your father, your father the king, appointed him chief of the magicians, spell casters, astrologers, and diviners, 12 because an outstanding spirit and knowledge and insight in interpreting dreams and explaining riddles and solving knotty problems were found in this Daniel, whom the king named Belteshazzar. Now let Daniel be summoned, and he will explain the meaning of the writing.”

Daniel Interprets the Writing

13 Then Daniel was brought before the king. The king said to Daniel, “Are you Daniel, one of the Judean exiles whom my father the king brought from Judah? 14 I have heard about you that a spirit of the gods is in you, and enlightenment and insight and outstanding wisdom are found in you. 15 Now, those wise men who are the spell casters were brought before me to read this writing and to make its meaning known to me, but they were not able to explain the meaning of the message. 16 Yet I have heard about you that you are able to explain meanings clearly and to solve knotty problems. Therefore, if you are able to read the writing and make its meaning known to me, you will be clothed in purple, with a gold chain around your neck, and you will rule as the third in the kingdom.”

17 Then Daniel answered the king:

Keep your gifts for yourself, or give your rewards to someone else! Nevertheless, I will read the writing to the king, and I will make its meaning known to him. 18 As for you, Your Majesty—the Most High God gave the kingdom, greatness, splendor, and glory to Nebuchadnezzar, your father. 19 So because of the greatness that he gave him, all peoples, nations, and languages trembled and were afraid in his presence. He killed whomever he wanted, and he let live whomever he wanted. Also, he promoted anyone he wanted, and he demoted anyone he wanted. 20 But when he thought too much of himself, and his spirit became hardened in pride so that he acted arrogantly, he was deposed from the throne of his kingdom, and his splendor was taken away from him. 21 He was driven away from humans, and his mind was changed to that of an animal. So his dwelling was with the wild donkeys. He was fed grass as bulls are fed, and his body was wet with dew from the sky, until he knew that the Most High God rules the kingdoms of men, and he raises up over them anyone he desires.

22 But you, his son, Belshazzar, did not humble your heart although you knew all this. 23 Instead, you lifted yourself against the Lord of Heaven. The vessels from his house were brought before you, and you and your nobles, your wives and your concubines drank wine from them. Then you praised the gods of silver, gold, bronze, iron, wood, and stone, who do not see and do not hear and do not know. But you did not honor the God who holds your breath in his hand and who controls all your ways. 24 So the back of the hand was sent by him, and this writing was inscribed.

25 Now this is the writing that was inscribed:

mene mene tekel and parsin

26 This is the meaning of the message:

Mene[e] means that God has counted up your kingdom and paid it out or spent it.

27 Tekel[f] means that you have been weighed in the scales, and you are too light.

28 Parsin[g] means that your kingdom has been broken in two and given to the Medes and the Persians.

29 Then Belshazzar spoke, and they dressed Daniel in purple, with a gold chain around his neck, and they made him the third highest ruler in the kingdom.

Darius Receives the Kingdom

30 That very night, King Belshazzar the Chaldean was killed.

31 Then Darius the Mede received the kingdom, when he was about sixty-two years old.[h]

5 Belshazzar the king made a great feast for a thousand of his lords and drank wine before the thousand. 2 While he tasted the wine, Belshazzar commanded that they bring in the golden and silver vessels which his father Nebuchadnezzar had taken from the temple which was in Jerusalem, so that the king, and his officials, his wives, and his concubines might drink from them. 3 Then they brought the golden vessels that were taken out of the temple of the house of God which was at Jerusalem. And the king and his officials, his wives and his concubines drank from them. 4 They drank wine and praised the gods of gold and of silver, of bronze, of iron, of wood, and of stone.

The Writing on the Wall

5 Immediately fingers of a man’s hand appeared and wrote opposite the lampstand on the plaster of the wall of the king’s palace. And the king saw the back of the hand that wrote. 6 Then the king’s countenance was changed, and his thoughts troubled him, so that the joints of his loins were loosed, and his knees struck against one another.

7 The king cried aloud to bring in the astrologers, the Chaldeans, and the soothsayers. And the king spoke and said to the wise men of Babylon, “Whoever shall read this writing and show me its interpretation shall be clothed with scarlet and have a chain of gold about his neck and shall be the third ruler in the kingdom.”

8 Then all the king’s wise men came in, but they could not read the writing, nor make known to the king its interpretation. 9 Then King Belshazzar was greatly troubled, and his countenance was changed in him, and his nobles were astonished.

10 Now the queen came into the banquet house because of the words of the king and his nobles. And the queen spoke and said, “O king, live forever. Do not let your thoughts trouble you, or let your countenance be changed. 11 There is a man in your kingdom in whom is the Spirit of the Holy God. And, in the days of your father, light and understanding and wisdom, like the wisdom of the gods, were found in him. And King Nebuchadnezzar, your father, your father the king, made him master of the magicians, astrologers, Chaldeans, and soothsayers. 12 Inasmuch as an excellent spirit and knowledge and understanding, interpreting dreams and explanation of enigmas and solving of problems, were found in the same Daniel, whom the king named Belteshazzar, now let Daniel be called, and he will give the interpretation.”

Daniel Interprets the Writing

13 Then Daniel was brought in before the king. And the king spoke and said to Daniel, “Are you that Daniel who is one of the sons of the captivity of Judah, whom the king my father brought out of Judah? 14 Now I have heard of you, that the Spirit of God is in you; and that light, and understanding, and excellent wisdom have been found in you. 15 Now the wise men, the astrologers, have been brought in before me, that they should read this writing and make known to me its interpretation, but they could not give the interpretation of the matter. 16 And I have heard of you, that you can give interpretations and solve problems. Now if you can read the writing, and make known to me its interpretation, you shall be clothed with scarlet and have a chain of gold about your neck and shall be the third ruler in the kingdom.”

17 Then Daniel answered and said before the king, “Let your gifts be for yourself, or give your rewards to another. Yet I will read the writing to the king and make known to him the interpretation.

18 “O king, the Most High God gave Nebuchadnezzar your father a kingdom and majesty and glory and honor. 19 And for the majesty that He gave him, all peoples, nations, and languages trembled and feared before him. Whom he would, he slaughtered, and whom he would, he kept alive; whom he would, he set up, and whom he would, he put down. 20 But when his heart was lifted up and his mind hardened in pride, he was deposed from his kingly throne and they took his glory from him. 21 And he was driven from the sons of men, and his heart was made like the animals, and his dwelling was with the wild donkeys. He was given grass to eat like oxen, and his body was wet with the dew of heaven until he knew that the Most High God rules in the kingdom of men, and that He appoints over it whomever He wills.

22 “Yet you, his son, O Belshazzar, have not humbled your heart, though you knew all this; 23 but have lifted up yourself against the Lord of heaven. And they have brought the vessels of His house before you, and you and your lords, your wives and your concubines, have drunk wine in them. And you have praised the gods of silver and gold, of bronze, iron, wood, and stone, which see not, nor hear, nor know. And the God in whose hand is your breath, and whose are all your ways, you have not glorified. 24 Then the hand was sent from Him, and this inscription was written.

25 “This is the inscription that was written:

MENE, MENE, TEKEL, UPHARSIN.

26 “This is the interpretation of the message:

Mene:[a] God has numbered your kingdom and put an end to it.

27 Tekel:[b] you have been weighed in the balances and are found wanting.

28 Peres:[c] your kingdom has been divided and given to the Medes and Persians.”

29 Then Belshazzar gave the command, and they clothed Daniel with scarlet and put a chain of gold about his neck, and made a proclamation concerning him, that he should be the third ruler in the kingdom.

30 That same night Belshazzar the king of the Chaldeans was slain. 31 Then Darius the Mede received the kingdom, being about sixty-two years old.

5 King Belshazzar(A) gave a great banquet(B) for a thousand of his nobles(C) and drank wine with them. 2 While Belshazzar was drinking(D) his wine, he gave orders to bring in the gold and silver goblets(E) that Nebuchadnezzar his father[a] had taken from the temple in Jerusalem, so that the king and his nobles, his wives and his concubines(F) might drink from them.(G) 3 So they brought in the gold goblets that had been taken from the temple of God in Jerusalem, and the king and his nobles, his wives and his concubines drank from them. 4 As they drank the wine, they praised the gods(H) of gold and silver, of bronze, iron, wood and stone.(I)

5 Suddenly the fingers of a human hand appeared and wrote on the plaster of the wall, near the lampstand in the royal palace. The king watched the hand as it wrote. 6 His face turned pale(J) and he was so frightened(K) that his legs became weak(L) and his knees were knocking.(M)

7 The king summoned the enchanters,(N) astrologers[b](O) and diviners.(P) Then he said to these wise(Q) men of Babylon, “Whoever reads this writing and tells me what it means will be clothed in purple and have a gold chain placed around his neck,(R) and he will be made the third(S) highest ruler in the kingdom.”(T)

8 Then all the king’s wise men(U) came in, but they could not read the writing or tell the king what it meant.(V) 9 So King Belshazzar became even more terrified(W) and his face grew more pale. His nobles were baffled.

10 The queen,[c] hearing the voices of the king and his nobles, came into the banquet hall. “May the king live forever!”(X) she said. “Don’t be alarmed! Don’t look so pale! 11 There is a man in your kingdom who has the spirit of the holy gods(Y) in him. In the time of your father he was found to have insight and intelligence and wisdom(Z) like that of the gods.(AA) Your father, King Nebuchadnezzar, appointed him chief of the magicians, enchanters, astrologers and diviners.(AB) 12 He did this because Daniel, whom the king called Belteshazzar,(AC) was found to have a keen mind and knowledge and understanding, and also the ability to interpret dreams, explain riddles(AD) and solve difficult problems.(AE) Call for Daniel, and he will tell you what the writing means.(AF)”

13 So Daniel was brought before the king, and the king said to him, “Are you Daniel, one of the exiles my father the king brought from Judah?(AG) 14 I have heard that the spirit of the gods(AH) is in you and that you have insight, intelligence and outstanding wisdom.(AI) 15 The wise men and enchanters were brought before me to read this writing and tell me what it means, but they could not explain it.(AJ) 16 Now I have heard that you are able to give interpretations and to solve difficult problems.(AK) If you can read this writing and tell me what it means, you will be clothed in purple and have a gold chain placed around your neck,(AL) and you will be made the third highest ruler in the kingdom.”(AM)

17 Then Daniel answered the king, “You may keep your gifts for yourself and give your rewards to someone else.(AN) Nevertheless, I will read the writing for the king and tell him what it means.

18 “Your Majesty, the Most High God gave your father Nebuchadnezzar(AO) sovereignty and greatness and glory and splendor.(AP) 19 Because of the high position he gave him, all the nations and peoples of every language dreaded and feared him. Those the king wanted to put to death, he put to death;(AQ) those he wanted to spare, he spared; those he wanted to promote, he promoted; and those he wanted to humble, he humbled.(AR) 20 But when his heart became arrogant and hardened with pride,(AS) he was deposed from his royal throne(AT) and stripped(AU) of his glory.(AV) 21 He was driven away from people and given the mind of an animal; he lived with the wild donkeys and ate grass like the ox; and his body was drenched with the dew of heaven, until he acknowledged that the Most High God is sovereign(AW) over all kingdoms on earth and sets over them anyone he wishes.(AX)

22 “But you, Belshazzar, his son,[d] have not humbled(AY) yourself, though you knew all this. 23 Instead, you have set yourself up against(AZ) the Lord of heaven. You had the goblets from his temple brought to you, and you and your nobles, your wives(BA) and your concubines drank wine from them. You praised the gods of silver and gold, of bronze, iron, wood and stone, which cannot see or hear or understand.(BB) But you did not honor the God who holds in his hand your life(BC) and all your ways.(BD) 24 Therefore he sent the hand that wrote the inscription.

25 “This is the inscription that was written:

mene, mene, tekel, parsin

26 “Here is what these words mean:
