4 传令官大声宣布说：“各族、各邦、各语种的人啊，王有令， 5 ‘你们一听见角、笛、弦琴、竖琴、瑟、笙等各种乐器奏响，就要叩拜尼布甲尼撒王所立的金像。 6 不叩拜的人必立刻被抛进烈焰熊熊的火窑。’” 7 于是，各族、各邦、各语种的人一听见角、笛、弦琴、竖琴、瑟等各种乐器的声音，就都叩拜尼布甲尼撒王所立的金像。

16 沙得拉、米煞、亚伯尼歌答道：“尼布甲尼撒啊，我们无需为此事回答你。 17 王啊，我们若真被扔进烈焰熊熊的火窑，我们所事奉的上帝必能救我们脱离火窑，祂必从你手中救我们。 18 即或不然，王啊，你要明白，我们也不会事奉你的神明或祭拜你立的金像。”

3 Împăratul Nebucadneţar a făcut o statuie de aur, înaltă de şaizeci de coţi şi lată de şase coţi[a], pe care a ridicat-o în valea Dura, în provincia Babilonului. 2 Împăratul Nebucadneţar a poruncit să se adune satrapii, demnitarii, guvernatorii, sfetnicii, vistiernicii, judecătorii, magistraţii şi toţi ceilalţi conducători ai provinciei[b], ca să vină la dedicarea statuii ridicate de împăratul Nebucadneţar. 3 Satrapii, demnitarii, guvernatorii, sfetnicii, vistiernicii, judecătorii, magistraţii şi toţi ceilalţi conducători ai provinciei au început să se adune, venind pentru dedicarea statuii ridicate de împăratul Nebucadneţar; ei s-au strâns înaintea statuii ridicate de împăratul Nebucadneţar. 4 Un crainic a proclamat cu glas tare, zicând astfel:
„Popoare, neamuri şi oameni de orice limbă! 5 În clipa când veţi auzi sunetul trâmbiţei, al flautului, al ţiterei, al lirei, al psalterionului,[c] al fluierului şi a tot felul de alte instrumente muzicale, să vă prosternaţi şi să vă închinaţi înaintea statuii de aur pe care a ridicat-o împăratul Nebucadneţar. 6 Cine nu se va prosterna şi nu se va închina, va fi aruncat chiar în clipa aceea în mijlocul unui cuptor aprins.“
7 Astfel, când au auzit sunetul trâmbiţei, al flautului, al ţiterei, al lirei, al psalterionului şi a tot felul de alte instrumente muzicale, toate popoarele, neamurile şi oamenii de toate limbile s-au prosternat şi s-au închinat statuii de aur, ridicate de împăratul Nebucadneţar.
8 Cu prilejul acesta, chiar în aceeaşi perioadă, câţiva dintre astrologi[d] au ieşit în faţă şi i-au pârât pe iudei. 9 Ei i-au zis împăratului Nebucadneţar: „Să trăieşti veşnic, împărate! 10 Tu, împărate, ai dat poruncă ca orice om care aude sunetul trâmbiţei, al flautului, al ţiterei, al lirei, al psalterionului, al fluierului şi a tot felul de alte instrumente muzicale să se prosterneze şi să se închine statuii de aur, 11 iar cine nu se prosternează şi nu se închină, să fie aruncat în cuptorul aprins. 12 Dar sunt nişte iudei, pe care i-ai numit în slujba de administratori ai provinciei Babilonului, şi anume Şadrak, Meşak şi Abed-Nego, oameni care nu ţin seama deloc de tine, împărate! Ei nu slujesc zeilor tăi şi nu se închină statuii de aur pe care ai ridicat-o.“
13 Atunci Nebucadneţar, aprins de mânie, a poruncit să fie aduşi Şadrak, Meşak şi Abed-Nego. Bărbaţii aceştia au fost aduşi înaintea împăratului, 14 iar Nebucadneţar le-a zis:
– Şadrak, Meşak şi Abed-Nego, voi nu slujiţi zeilor mei şi nu vă închinaţi statuii de aur pe care am ridicat-o?! 15 Acum fiţi gata ca, în clipa în care veţi auzi sunetul trâmbiţei, al flautului, al ţiterei, al lirei, al psalterionului, al fluierului şi a tot felul de alte instrumente muzicale, să vă prosternaţi şi să vă închinaţi statuii pe care am făcut-o. Dacă nu vă veţi închina, veţi fi aruncaţi de îndată în mijlocul unui cuptor aprins. Şi care este zeul acela care vă va izbăvi din mâna mea?
16 Şadrak, Meşak şi Abed-Nego i-au răspuns împăratului:
– Nebucadneţare, noi n-avem nevoie să ne apărăm înaintea ta în această privinţă! 17 Iată, Dumnezeul nostru, Căruia Îi slujim, poate să ne scape din cuptorul aprins şi ne va izbăvi şi din mâna ta, împărate! 18 Şi, chiar dacă nu va fi aşa, să ştii, împărate, că nu vom sluji zeilor tăi şi nici nu ne vom închina statuii de aur pe care ai ridicat-o.
19 Atunci Nebucadneţar s-a umplut de mânie şi i s-a schimbat înfăţişarea feţei din pricina lui Şadrak, a lui Meşak şi a lui Abed-Nego. A poruncit să se încălzească cuptorul de şapte ori mai mult[e] decât trebuia încălzit. 20 Apoi a poruncit unora dintre cei mai puternici bărbaţi din oştirea lui să-i lege pe Şadrak, pe Meşak şi pe Abed-Nego şi să-i arunce în cuptorul aprins. 21 Astfel, oamenii aceştia au fost legaţi, aşa cum erau îmbrăcaţi, în mantalele, tunicile, turbanele şi celelalte haine ale lor, şi au fost aruncaţi în mijlocul cuptorului aprins. 22 Fiindcă porunca împăratului a fost grabnică, iar cuptorul fusese încălzit peste măsură, acei oameni care s-au urcat cu Şadrak, Meşak şi Abed-Nego au fost ucişi de flacăra focului, 23 iar cei trei bărbaţi – Şadrak, Meşak şi Abed-Nego – legaţi fiind, au căzut în mijlocul cuptorului aprins.
24 Atunci împăratul Nebucadneţar s-a înspăimântat şi s-a ridicat în grabă. El le-a zis sfetnicilor săi:
– Nu am aruncat noi în mijlocul focului trei bărbaţi legaţi?
Ei i-au răspuns împăratului:
– Adevărat, împărate!
25 El a mai zis:
– Ei bine, eu văd patru bărbaţi umblând liberi şi nevătămaţi în mijlocul focului, iar înfăţişarea celui de-al patrulea seamănă cu a unui fiu de zei.
26 Apoi Nebucadneţar s-a apropiat de uşa cuptorului aprins şi a strigat: „Şadrak, Meşak şi Abed-Nego, slujitori ai Dumnezeului Preaînalt, ieşiţi afară şi veniţi încoace!“
Şadrak, Meşak şi Abed-Nego au ieşit din mijlocul focului. 27 Satrapii, demnitarii, guvernatorii şi sfetnicii împăratului s-au strâns cu toţii şi au văzut că focul nu avusese nici o putere asupra trupurilor acestor bărbaţi, că părul capului lor nu se pârlise, că mantiile lor rămăseseră neschimbate şi că nici măcar miros de fum nu se prinsese de ei.
28 Nebucadneţar a zis:
„Binecuvântat să fie Dumnezeul lui Şadrak, al lui Meşak şi al lui Abed-Nego, Care l-a trimis pe îngerul Său şi i-a izbăvit pe slujitorii Săi. Ei s-au încrezut în El, au nesocotit porunca împăratului şi şi-au dat mai degrabă trupurile lor, decât să slujească şi să se închine oricărui alt dumnezeu decât Dumnezeului lor. 29 De aceea dau poruncă ca orice om din orice popor, din orice neam sau de orice limbă ar fi, care va vorbi de rău despre Dumnezeul lui Şadrak, al lui Meşak şi al lui Abed-Nego, să fie făcut bucăţi, iar casa lui să fie prefăcută într-un morman de gunoi, pentru că nu există un alt dumnezeu care să poată izbăvi în felul acesta.“
30 După aceea, împăratul i-a înălţat la mare cinste pe Şadrak, Meşak şi Abed-Nego în provincia Babilonului.

3 Op een keer liet koning Nebukadnezar een gouden beeld maken van 60 el (27 m) hoog en 6 el (2,70 m) breed. Hij liet het neerzetten in het Dura-dal in de provincie Babel. 2 Daarna liet hij alle bestuurders, ministers, raadgevers, rechters en legeraanvoerders van alle provincies komen. Alle hoge ambtenaren moesten aanwezig zijn bij de inwijding van het beeld. 3 Zo kwamen ze allemaal voor de inwijding van het beeld dat koning Nebukadnezar had laten neerzetten. Ze gingen allemaal vóór het beeld staan. 4 En een dienaar riep luid: "Luister goed naar het volgende bevel, iedereen die hier verzameld is! 5 Zodra de muziek begint te spelen, moeten jullie neerknielen en je diep buigen en het gouden beeld aanbidden dat koning Nebukadnezar heeft neergezet. 6 Wie dat niet doet, zal onmiddellijk in de brandende oven worden gegooid." 7 Daarom boog iedereen zich diep zodra de muziek begon te spelen. Iedereen die daar was, van welk land dan ook, knielde neer, boog zich diep en aanbad het gouden beeld dat koning Nebukadnezar had neergezet.
8 Op dat moment kwamen er een paar Babyloniërs bij de koning. Ze beschuldigden de Judeeërs. 9 Ze zeiden tegen koning Nebukadnezar: "Mijn heer de koning, leef in eeuwigheid! 10 U heeft het bevel gegeven dat, zodra de muziek begon te spelen, iedereen moest neerknielen en zich diep moest buigen om het gouden beeld te aanbidden. 11 Ook heeft u gezegd dat wie dat niet deed, in de brandende oven gegooid zou worden. 12 Mijn heer de koning, een aantal mannen heeft zich niets van u aangetrokken. Het zijn de mannen uit Juda die u heeft aangewezen tot bestuurders van de provincie Babel, namelijk Sadrach, Mesach en Abednego. Ze willen uw goden niet aanbidden. Ook het gouden beeld niet dat u heeft neergezet."
13 Koning Nebukadnezar werd woedend. Hij gaf het bevel om Sadrach, Mesach en Abednego te halen. Ze werden bij de koning gebracht. 14 De koning zei tegen hen: "Sadrach, Mesach en Abednego, is het waar dat jullie weigeren om mijn goden te aanbidden? En dat jullie niet willen neerknielen voor het beeld dat ik heb neergezet? 15 De muziek zal weer gaan spelen. Zorg ervoor dat jullie klaarstaan. Als jullie de muziek horen, zorg dan dat jullie neerknielen, je diep buigen en het beeld aanbidden dat ik heb gemaakt. Als jullie dat niet doen, zullen jullie onmiddellijk in de brandende oven worden gegooid. En welke god zal jullie dan nog kunnen redden?" 16 Toen antwoordden Sadrach, Mesach en Abednego: "Mijn heer de koning, het is niet nodig dat wij ons tegenover u verdedigen. 17 Het is zó: de God die wij aanbidden is in staat om ons te redden. Hij zal ons uit de brandende oven en uit uw macht redden. 18 Maar ook als Hij dat niet doet, mijn heer de koning, zullen we uw goden niet aanbidden. En we zullen ook niet buigen voor het gouden beeld dat u heeft neergezet."

19+20 Toen werd Nebukadnezar razend. Ziedend van woede gaf hij het bevel dat Sadrach, Mesach en Abednego in het vuur moesten worden gegooid. Maar eerst liet hij het vuur nog zeven keer zo heet stoken als normaal. Toen gaf hij een paar sterke mannen uit zijn lijfwacht bevel de drie vast te binden en in het vuur te gooien. 21 Ze werden vastgebonden, met hun mantels, broeken, mutsen en andere kleren nog aan. Zo werden ze in de brandende oven gegooid. 22 Dit werd onmiddellijk gedaan, op bevel van de koning. Doordat de koning de oven zo heet had laten opstoken, verbrandden de mannen die Sadrach, Mesach en Abednego naar boven hadden gebracht, door de hitte die van de oven afkwam. 23 Sadrach, Mesach en Abednego vielen vastgebonden in de oven.
24 Toen schrok koning Nebukadnezar hevig. Hij sprong overeind en vroeg aan zijn raadgevers: "We hebben toch dríe mannen in het vuur gegooid? En ze waren toch gebonden?" Zij antwoordden: "Jazeker, mijn heer de koning." 25 De koning riep: "Maar ik zie víer mannen vrij in het vuur rondwandelen! En het vuur doet hun niets! En die vierde man lijkt wel een zoon van de goden!" 26 Toen liep Nebukadnezar naar de deur van de oven en riep: "Sadrach, Mesach en Abednego, dienaren van de Allerhoogste God! Kom eruit en kom hier!" Toen stapten Sadrach, Mesach en Abednego uit het vuur. 27 En de bestuurders, ministers, raadgevers, rechters en aanvoerders van de koning dromden om hen heen. Ze zagen dat het vuur hun niets had gedaan. Ze hadden geen brandwonden en hun haar was niet verschroeid. Hun kleren waren nog heel en er hing zelfs geen brandlucht aan.
28 Toen zei Nebukadnezar: "Prijs de God van Sadrach, Mesach en Abednego! Hij heeft zijn engel gestuurd om zijn dienaren te redden. Want ze vertrouwden op Hem. Ze waren ongehoorzaam aan mijn bevel. Ze waren bereid te sterven omdat ze alleen hun eigen God wilden aanbidden en geen enkele andere god. 29 Daarom geef ik vandaag het bevel dat iedereen die de God van Sadrach, Mesach en Abednego beledigt, in stukken gehakt zal worden. Het maakt niet uit van welk volk hij is. Ook zal zijn huis worden verwoest. Want geen één andere god kan zó mensen redden als deze God!"
30 Toen gaf de koning aan Sadrach, Mesach en Abednego als beloning een hoge positie in de provincie Babel.

The Image of Gold and the Blazing Furnace
3 King Nebuchadnezzar made an image(A) of gold, sixty cubits high and six cubits wide,[a] and set it up on the plain of Dura in the province of Babylon. 2 He then summoned the satraps,(B) prefects, governors, advisers, treasurers, judges, magistrates and all the other provincial officials(C) to come to the dedication of the image he had set up. 3 So the satraps, prefects, governors, advisers, treasurers, judges, magistrates and all the other provincial officials assembled for the dedication of the image that King Nebuchadnezzar had set up, and they stood before it.
4 Then the herald loudly proclaimed, “Nations and peoples of every language,(D) this is what you are commanded to do: 5 As soon as you hear the sound of the horn, flute, zither, lyre, harp,(E) pipe and all kinds of music, you must fall down and worship the image(F) of gold that King Nebuchadnezzar has set up.(G) 6 Whoever does not fall down and worship will immediately be thrown into a blazing furnace.”(H)
7 Therefore, as soon as they heard the sound of the horn, flute, zither, lyre, harp and all kinds of music, all the nations and peoples of every language fell down and worshiped the image of gold that King Nebuchadnezzar had set up.(I)
8 At this time some astrologers[b](J) came forward and denounced the Jews. 9 They said to King Nebuchadnezzar, “May the king live forever!(K) 10 Your Majesty has issued a decree(L) that everyone who hears the sound of the horn, flute, zither, lyre, harp, pipe and all kinds of music must fall down and worship the image of gold,(M) 11 and that whoever does not fall down and worship will be thrown into a blazing furnace. 12 But there are some Jews whom you have set over the affairs of the province of Babylon—Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego(N)—who pay no attention(O) to you, Your Majesty. They neither serve your gods nor worship the image of gold you have set up.”(P)
13 Furious(Q) with rage, Nebuchadnezzar summoned Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego. So these men were brought before the king, 14 and Nebuchadnezzar said to them, “Is it true, Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego, that you do not serve my gods(R) or worship the image(S) of gold I have set up? 15 Now when you hear the sound of the horn, flute, zither, lyre, harp, pipe and all kinds of music, if you are ready to fall down and worship the image I made, very good. But if you do not worship it, you will be thrown immediately into a blazing furnace. Then what god(T) will be able to rescue(U) you from my hand?”
16 Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego(V) replied to him, “King Nebuchadnezzar, we do not need to defend ourselves before you in this matter. 17 If we are thrown into the blazing furnace, the God we serve is able to deliver(W) us from it, and he will deliver(X) us[c] from Your Majesty’s hand. 18 But even if he does not, we want you to know, Your Majesty, that we will not serve your gods or worship the image of gold you have set up.(Y)”
19 Then Nebuchadnezzar was furious with Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego, and his attitude toward them changed. He ordered the furnace heated seven(Z) times hotter than usual 20 and commanded some of the strongest soldiers in his army to tie up Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego(AA) and throw them into the blazing furnace. 21 So these men, wearing their robes, trousers, turbans and other clothes, were bound and thrown into the blazing furnace. 22 The king’s command was so urgent and the furnace so hot that the flames of the fire killed the soldiers who took up Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego,(AB) 23 and these three men, firmly tied, fell into the blazing furnace.
24 Then King Nebuchadnezzar leaped to his feet in amazement and asked his advisers, “Weren’t there three men that we tied up and threw into the fire?”
They replied, “Certainly, Your Majesty.”
25 He said, “Look! I see four men walking around in the fire, unbound and unharmed, and the fourth looks like a son of the gods.”
26 Nebuchadnezzar then approached the opening of the blazing furnace and shouted, “Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego, servants of the Most High God,(AC) come out! Come here!”
So Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego came out of the fire, 27 and the satraps, prefects, governors and royal advisers(AD) crowded around them.(AE) They saw that the fire(AF) had not harmed their bodies, nor was a hair of their heads singed; their robes were not scorched, and there was no smell of fire on them.
28 Then Nebuchadnezzar said, “Praise be to the God of Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego, who has sent his angel(AG) and rescued(AH) his servants! They trusted(AI) in him and defied the king’s command and were willing to give up their lives rather than serve or worship any god except their own God.(AJ) 29 Therefore I decree(AK) that the people of any nation or language who say anything against the God of Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego be cut into pieces and their houses be turned into piles of rubble,(AL) for no other god can save(AM) in this way.”
30 Then the king promoted Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego in the province of Babylon.(AN)
