3 Vua Nê-bu-cát-nết-xa đúc một tượng vàng cao sáu mươi thước, ngang sáu thước và dựng trong đồng bằng Đu-ra, thuộc vùng Ba-by-lôn. 2 Rồi vua gọi các lãnh tụ: các tổng đốc, phụ tá tổng đốc, sĩ quan chỉ huy quân đội, các cố vấn hoàng gia, các thủ quỹ ngân khố, thẩm phán, quan cai trị, và tất cả các viên chức trong nước. Vua muốn họ đến tham dự lễ đặc biệt cung hiến pho tượng mà vua đã dựng nên. 3 Tất cả mọi người đều đến dự buổi lễ đặc biệt đó và đứng trước mặt pho tượng vua Nê-bu-cát-nết-xa đã dựng. 4 Rồi viên chức truyền lệnh của vua dõng dạc tuyên bố, “Hỡi các dân, các quốc gia, các thứ tiếng, các ngươi phải làm như sau: 5 Khi các ngươi nghe tiếng loa, sáo, đờn sắt, đờn thập lục [a], đờn cầm, ống quyển, và các nhạc khí khác thì phải quì xuống bái lạy tượng vàng mà vua Nê-bu-cát-nết-xa đã dựng lên. 6 Ai không cúi xuống bái lạy sẽ lập tức bị ném vào lò lửa hừng.”
7 Bấy giờ các dân, các quốc gia, các người nói đủ mọi thứ tiếng có mặt ở đó. Khi nghe tiếng loa, sáo, đờn sắt, đờn thập lục, đờn cầm, ống quyển, và các nhạc khí khác, tất cả đều cúi xuống bái lạy tượng vàng mà vua Nê-bu-cát-nết-xa đã dựng.
8 Tuy nhiên có mấy người Ba-by-lôn đến cùng vua và tố cáo mấy người Giu-đa. 9 Họ tâu cùng vua Nê-bu-cát-nết-xa, “Tâu vua, chúc vua vạn tuế! 10 Thưa vua, ngài đã ra lệnh rằng khi nghe tiếng loa, sáo, đờn sắt, đờn thập lục, đờn cầm, ống quyển, và các nhạc khí khác thì mọi người phải cúi xuống bái lạy tượng vàng. 11 Ai bất tuân sẽ bị ném vào lò lửa hừng. 12 Thưa vua, có mấy người Giu-đa mà vua tiến cử làm quan cai trị vùng Ba-by-lôn không thèm đến xỉa đến lệnh vua. Bọn đó là Sa-đơ-rắc, Mê-sác, và A-bết-nê-gô. Chúng không thờ các thần của vua cũng không bái lạy tượng vàng vua đã dựng.”
13 Vua Nê-bu-cát-nết-xa nổi lôi đình và cho triệu Sa-đơ-rắc, Mê-sác, và A-bết-nê-gô đến. Khi họ bị điệu đến trước mặt vua, 14 thì Nê-bu-cát-nết-xa liền hỏi, “Sa-đơ-rắc, Mê-sác, và A-bết-nê-gô, có đúng là các anh không phục vụ các thần của ta và không chịu bái lạy tượng vàng ta đã dựng không? 15 Lát nữa đây các anh lại sẽ nghe tiếng loa, sáo, đờn sắt, đờn thập lục, đờn cầm, ống quyển, và các nhạc khí khác. Lúc ấy nếu các anh chịu cúi lạy tượng ta dựng thì tốt, bằng không các anh sẽ bị ném ngay vào lò lửa hừng. Rồi xem thử thần nào sẽ cứu các anh khỏi tay ta nhé?”
16 Sa-đơ-rắc, Mê-sác, và A-bết-nê-gô thưa với vua rằng, “Thưa vua Nê-bu-cát-nết-xa, chúng tôi không cần phải tự bênh vực mình trước mặt vua. 17 Nếu vua ném chúng tôi vào lò lửa thì Thượng Đế mà chúng tôi phục vụ sẽ có thể giải cứu chúng tôi khỏi lò lửa hừng. Ngài cũng sẽ cứu chúng tôi khỏi quyền lực của vua. 18 Mà dù cho Thượng Đế không giải cứu chúng tôi đi nữa thì chúng tôi muốn vua biết rằng: Chúng tôi sẽ không phục vụ các thần của vua hay bái lạy tượng vàng vua đã dựng.”
19 Vua Nê-bu-cát-nết-xa nổi trận lôi đình và đổi thái độ đối với Sa-đơ-rắc, Mê-sác, và A-bết-nê-gô. Vua ra lệnh đốt lò lửa nóng gấp bảy lần hơn bình thường. 20 Rồi vua ra lệnh các binh sĩ lực lưỡng nhất của mình trói Sa-đơ-rắc, Mê-sác, và A-bết-nê-gô lại và ném họ vào lò lửa hừng.
21 Vậy Sa-đơ-rắc, Mê-sác, và A-bết-nê-gô bị trói và bị quăng vào lò lửa hừng trong khi vẫn còn mặc áo, quần, khăn vành và các y phục khác. 22 Lệnh vua nghiêm nhặt và lò lửa nóng đến nỗi sức nóng thiêu cháy các binh sĩ lực lưỡng đã ném Sa-đơ-rắc, Mê-sác, và A-bết-nê-gô vào lò. 23 Bị trói chặt, Sa-đơ-rắc, Mê-sác, và A-bết-nê-gô, rơi vào lò lửa hừng.
24 Nhưng vua Nê-bu-cát-nết-xa vô cùng ngạc nhiên đến nỗi vua vùng đứng lên. Vua hỏi mấy cố vấn, “Có phải chúng ta trói ba người ném vào lửa không?”
Họ thưa, “Dạ phải.”
25 Nhà vua bảo, “Xem kìa! Ta thấy bốn người đang đi trong lửa. Họ không bị trói cũng không bị phỏng. Người thứ tư giống như con trai của các thần.”
26 Vua Nê-bu-cát-nết-xa liền tiến đến miệng lò kêu lớn, “Sa-đơ-rắc, Mê-sác, và A-bết-nê-gô ơi, hãy bước ra! Tôi tớ của Thượng Đế Chí Cao, hãy đến đây!”
Sa-đơ-rắc, Mê-sác, và A-bết-nê-gô liền từ đám lửa đi ra. 27 Khi họ bước ra thì các thống đốc, các phụ tá, các viên sĩ quan chỉ huy quân đội, các cố vấn hoàng gia vây quanh họ và thấy rằng lửa không làm gì hại đến thân thể họ. Tóc họ không bị sém, áo quần không bị cháy, và họ cũng chẳng có mùi khói nữa!
28 Vua Nê-bu-cát-nết-xa tuyên bố, “Đáng ca ngợi Thượng Đế của Sa-đơ-rắc, Mê-sác, và A-bết-nê-gô. Ngài đã sai thiên sứ giải cứu tôi tớ Ngài khỏi ngọn lửa! Ba người nầy tin cậy Thượng Đế mình, dám cãi lệnh ta. Họ chẳng thà chịu chết hơn phục vụ hay bái lạy thần nào khác ngoài Thượng Đế của mình. 29 Cho nên ta ra lệnh nầy: Bất cứ ai thuộc dân tộc hay ngôn ngữ nào nói phạm đến Thượng Đế của Sa-đơ-rắc, Mê-sác, và A-bết-nê-gô sẽ bị phanh thây, và nhà nó sẽ biến thành đống gạch vụn. Không có thần nào có thể giải cứu như thế nầy được.” 30 Rồi vua thăng chức cho Sa-đơ-rắc, Mê-sác, và A-bết-nê-gô trong vùng Ba-by-lôn.

A Gold Statue and a Blazing Furnace
3 King Nebuchadnezzar made a gold statue. It was 90 feet tall and 9 feet wide. He set it up on the plain of Dura near the city of Babylon. 2 Then the king sent for the royal rulers, high officials and governors. He sent for the advisers, treasurers, judges and court officers. And he sent for all the other officials of Babylon. He asked them to come to a special gathering to honor the statue he had set up. 3 So the royal rulers, high officials and governors came together. So did the advisers, treasurers, judges and court officers. All the other officials joined them. They came to honor the statue that King Nebuchadnezzar had set up. They stood in front of it.
4 Then a messenger called out loudly, “Listen, you people who come from every nation! Pay attention, you who speak other languages! Here is what the king commands you to do. 5 You will soon hear the sound of horns and flutes. You will hear zithers, lyres, harps and pipes. In fact, you will hear all kinds of music. When you do, you must fall down and worship the gold statue. That is the statue that King Nebuchadnezzar has set up. 6 If you don’t, you will be thrown into a blazing furnace right away.”
7 All the people heard the sound of the horns and flutes. They heard the zithers, lyres, harps and other musical instruments. As soon as they did, they fell down and worshiped Nebuchadnezzar’s gold statue. They were people from all nations no matter what language they spoke.
8 At this time some people who studied the heavens came forward. They spoke against the Jews. 9 They said, “King Nebuchadnezzar, may you live forever! 10 Your Majesty has commanded everyone to fall down and worship the gold statue. You told them to do it when they heard the horns, flutes, zithers, lyres, harps, pipes and other musical instruments. 11 If they didn’t, they would be thrown into a blazing furnace. 12 But you have appointed some Jews to help Daniel govern Babylon and the towns around it. Their names are Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego. They don’t pay any attention to you, King Nebuchadnezzar. They don’t serve your gods. And they refuse to worship the gold statue you have set up.”
13 Nebuchadnezzar was very angry. He sent for Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego. So they were brought to him. 14 The king said to them, “Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego, is what I heard about you true? Don’t you serve my gods? Don’t you worship the gold statue I set up? 15 You will hear the horns, flutes, zithers, lyres, harps, pipes and other musical instruments. When you do, fall down and worship the statue I made. If you will, that’s very good. But if you won’t, you will be thrown at once into a blazing furnace. Then what god will be able to save you from my power?”
16 Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego replied to him. They said, “King Nebuchadnezzar, we don’t need to talk about this anymore. 17 We might be thrown into the blazing furnace. But the God we serve is able to bring us out of it alive. He will save us from your power. 18 But we want you to know this, Your Majesty. Even if we knew that our God wouldn’t save us, we still wouldn’t serve your gods. We wouldn’t worship the gold statue you set up.”
19 Then Nebuchadnezzar was very angry with Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego. The look on his face changed. And he ordered that the furnace be heated seven times hotter than usual. 20 He also gave some of the strongest soldiers in his army a command. He ordered them to tie up Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego. Then he told his men to throw them into the blazing furnace. 21 So they were tied up. Then they were thrown into the furnace. They were wearing their robes, pants, turbans and other clothes. 22 The king’s command was carried out quickly. The furnace was so hot that its flames killed the soldiers who threw Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego into it. 23 So the three men were firmly tied up. And they fell into the blazing furnace.
24 Then King Nebuchadnezzar leaped to his feet. He was so amazed he asked his advisers, “Didn’t we tie up three men? Didn’t we throw three men into the fire?”
They replied, “Yes, we did, Your Majesty.”
25 The king said, “Look! I see four men walking around in the fire. They aren’t tied up. And the fire hasn’t even harmed them. The fourth man looks like a son of the gods.”
26 Then the king approached the opening of the blazing furnace. He shouted, “Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego, come out! You who serve the Most High God, come here!”
So they came out of the fire. 27 The royal rulers, high officials, governors and advisers crowded around them. They saw that the fire hadn’t harmed their bodies. Not one hair on their heads was burned. Their robes weren’t burned either. And they didn’t even smell like smoke.
28 Then Nebuchadnezzar said, “May the God of Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego be praised! He has sent his angel and saved his servants. They trusted in him. They refused to obey my command. They were willing to give up their lives. They would rather die than serve or worship any god except their own God. 29 No other god can save people this way. So I’m giving an order about the God of Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego. No one may say anything against him. That’s true no matter what language they speak. If they say anything against him, they’ll be cut to pieces. And their houses will be turned into piles of trash.”
30 Then the king honored Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego. He gave them higher positions in the city of Babylon and the towns around it.

The Image of Gold and the Blazing Furnace
3 King Nebuchadnezzar made an image(A) of gold, sixty cubits high and six cubits wide,[a] and set it up on the plain of Dura in the province of Babylon. 2 He then summoned the satraps,(B) prefects, governors, advisers, treasurers, judges, magistrates and all the other provincial officials(C) to come to the dedication of the image he had set up. 3 So the satraps, prefects, governors, advisers, treasurers, judges, magistrates and all the other provincial officials assembled for the dedication of the image that King Nebuchadnezzar had set up, and they stood before it.
4 Then the herald loudly proclaimed, “Nations and peoples of every language,(D) this is what you are commanded to do: 5 As soon as you hear the sound of the horn, flute, zither, lyre, harp,(E) pipe and all kinds of music, you must fall down and worship the image(F) of gold that King Nebuchadnezzar has set up.(G) 6 Whoever does not fall down and worship will immediately be thrown into a blazing furnace.”(H)
7 Therefore, as soon as they heard the sound of the horn, flute, zither, lyre, harp and all kinds of music, all the nations and peoples of every language fell down and worshiped the image of gold that King Nebuchadnezzar had set up.(I)
8 At this time some astrologers[b](J) came forward and denounced the Jews. 9 They said to King Nebuchadnezzar, “May the king live forever!(K) 10 Your Majesty has issued a decree(L) that everyone who hears the sound of the horn, flute, zither, lyre, harp, pipe and all kinds of music must fall down and worship the image of gold,(M) 11 and that whoever does not fall down and worship will be thrown into a blazing furnace. 12 But there are some Jews whom you have set over the affairs of the province of Babylon—Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego(N)—who pay no attention(O) to you, Your Majesty. They neither serve your gods nor worship the image of gold you have set up.”(P)
13 Furious(Q) with rage, Nebuchadnezzar summoned Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego. So these men were brought before the king, 14 and Nebuchadnezzar said to them, “Is it true, Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego, that you do not serve my gods(R) or worship the image(S) of gold I have set up? 15 Now when you hear the sound of the horn, flute, zither, lyre, harp, pipe and all kinds of music, if you are ready to fall down and worship the image I made, very good. But if you do not worship it, you will be thrown immediately into a blazing furnace. Then what god(T) will be able to rescue(U) you from my hand?”
16 Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego(V) replied to him, “King Nebuchadnezzar, we do not need to defend ourselves before you in this matter. 17 If we are thrown into the blazing furnace, the God we serve is able to deliver(W) us from it, and he will deliver(X) us[c] from Your Majesty’s hand. 18 But even if he does not, we want you to know, Your Majesty, that we will not serve your gods or worship the image of gold you have set up.(Y)”
19 Then Nebuchadnezzar was furious with Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego, and his attitude toward them changed. He ordered the furnace heated seven(Z) times hotter than usual 20 and commanded some of the strongest soldiers in his army to tie up Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego(AA) and throw them into the blazing furnace. 21 So these men, wearing their robes, trousers, turbans and other clothes, were bound and thrown into the blazing furnace. 22 The king’s command was so urgent and the furnace so hot that the flames of the fire killed the soldiers who took up Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego,(AB) 23 and these three men, firmly tied, fell into the blazing furnace.
24 Then King Nebuchadnezzar leaped to his feet in amazement and asked his advisers, “Weren’t there three men that we tied up and threw into the fire?”
They replied, “Certainly, Your Majesty.”
25 He said, “Look! I see four men walking around in the fire, unbound and unharmed, and the fourth looks like a son of the gods.”
26 Nebuchadnezzar then approached the opening of the blazing furnace and shouted, “Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego, servants of the Most High God,(AC) come out! Come here!”
So Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego came out of the fire, 27 and the satraps, prefects, governors and royal advisers(AD) crowded around them.(AE) They saw that the fire(AF) had not harmed their bodies, nor was a hair of their heads singed; their robes were not scorched, and there was no smell of fire on them.
28 Then Nebuchadnezzar said, “Praise be to the God of Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego, who has sent his angel(AG) and rescued(AH) his servants! They trusted(AI) in him and defied the king’s command and were willing to give up their lives rather than serve or worship any god except their own God.(AJ) 29 Therefore I decree(AK) that the people of any nation or language who say anything against the God of Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego be cut into pieces and their houses be turned into piles of rubble,(AL) for no other god can save(AM) in this way.”
30 Then the king promoted Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego in the province of Babylon.(AN)
