11 “玛代人大流士元年，我去帮助、护卫米迦勒。 2 现在我要把真相告诉你。波斯将再有三位王兴起，随后的第四位王远比其他王富有。他靠财富强盛后，便会煽动众民去攻打希腊国。 3 那时必有一位英勇的王兴起，执掌大权，随心所欲。 4 但他兴起后不久，他的国必土崩瓦解，在天下一分为四，既不归他的后代统治，也不如他掌权时强盛。因为他的国必被连根拔除，归给外人。

5 “南方王必强盛，他的将领中将有一位比他更强盛，这人执掌王权，势力强大。 6 若干年后，南方王将与北方王联盟。南方王的女儿将到北方王那里缔结盟约。但她必保不住自己的势力，王权也无法长久。她和她的随从、父亲和辅佐者必遭杀害。

7 “她家族中必有一人继承王位，率军攻打北方王，侵入他们的堡垒，击败他们， 8 将他们的神像、铸造的偶像及金银宝器掳到埃及。此后数年，他不再去攻击北方王。 9 后来，北方王必侵入南方王的国土，但终必撤回本国。

10 “北方王的儿子们必发动战争，召集大军，如洪水席卷而来，直打到南方王的堡垒。 11 南方王必大怒，出来迎战北方王的大军，并击败他们。 12 南方王获胜后必心高气傲，杀戮成千上万的人，但他的胜利不能持久。 13 因为数年后，北方王必召集更庞大的军队，带着大量装备卷土重来。

14 “那时，许多人必起来反抗南方王。你同胞中的残暴之徒也必反叛，从而使异象应验，但他们必失败。 15 北方王必修筑高台攻取南方王的坚城，南方的军兵必无力抵挡，就是精兵也抵挡不住。 16 北方王必为所欲为，所向无敌。他必侵占佳美之地，手握毁灭之权。 17 他决意倾全国之力而来，与南方王建立联盟，并将自己的女儿嫁给南方王，旨在推翻他的国。但北方王的计划必然失败，毫无收益。

18 “后来，他将转而攻打沿海地区，征服许多地方。但一位将领必制止他的嚣张气焰，使他自取其辱。 19 他将返回本国的堡垒，从此一蹶不振，销声匿迹。 20 继承他王位的人将派税吏横征暴敛，以维持王国的荣耀。但不久他必灭亡，并非死于民怨，也非死于战争。

21 “接着继位的是一个卑鄙的人。他无权继位，却乘人不备用奸计夺取王位。 22 他横扫千军，击溃他们，包括盟国的王。 23 他与人结盟后，必行欺诈，借不多的人掌握大权。 24 他必乘人不备入侵最富庶的地区，行他祖先从未行过的事，将掳掠的财物分给部下，并策划攻打堡垒，但这都是短暂的。 25 他集中力量，鼓起勇气，率领大军进攻南方王。南方王也率领强大的军队迎战，却敌不过他，因为有人暗算南方王。 26 南方王必遭亲信暗算，全军溃败，许多人被杀。 27 两个王心怀叵测，同席而坐，尔虞我诈，但都不成功，因为结局必在所定的时间到来。 28 北方王必带着大量财物回国，但他决意反对圣约，在回国的路上任意妄为。

29 “到了所定的时间，他必再次攻打南方，但结果与上次不同， 30 因为基提的战船必来攻击他，使他丧胆而回。他必向圣约之民发泄愤怒，任意妄为，支持背弃圣约的人。 31 他的军队必亵渎圣地，亵渎那堡垒，废除日常献的祭，设立带来毁灭的可憎之物。 32 他必花言巧语笼络违背圣约的人，但认识上帝的人必奋起反抗。 33 那些智者必教导许多民众，但他们将在一段时间内被刀剑杀戮，或被烧死，或被掳去，或被抢掠。 34 他们败亡时必得不到多少援助，许多人并非真心实意地加入他们的行列。 35 有些智者将被害，但这是为了熬炼、净化他们，使他们洁白无瑕，一直到末了。因为结局必在所定的时间到来。

36 “北方王必任意妄为，自高自大，自以为超越一切神明，肆意诋毁万神之神。他必亨通，一直到上帝发烈怒的日子结束。因为所定的必然成就。 37 他不尊崇他祖先的神明，也不尊崇妇女们爱慕的神明或其他任何神明，因为他自认为超越一切。 38 他反倒祭拜他祖先不认识的堡垒之神，向它献上金银宝石及贵重的礼物。 39 他必靠外族神明的帮助攻打坚固的堡垒，将尊荣赐给顺从他的人，派他们治理民众，分给他们土地作奖赏。

40 “到了末后，南方王必与北方王交战。北方王必率领战车、骑兵和大批战船攻击他，又如洪水般横扫列国。 41 他必侵入佳美之地，杀死成千上万的人，只有以东、摩押及亚扪人的首领得以逃脱。 42 他必攻击列国，埃及也无法幸免。 43 他必掌管埃及的金银财宝，利比亚人和古实人必归顺他。 44 但从东方和北方传来的消息必令他震惊，他必大怒，出兵杀戮、毁灭许多人。 45 他必在海和荣美的圣山之间搭起他宫殿般的帐幕。但他必灭亡，无人相助。

11 Vanaf het moment dat koning Darius uit Medië koning werd, heb Ik Mij ingespannen om hem te helpen.

2 Nu zal Ik je de waarheid vertellen over wat er in de toekomst gaat gebeuren. Let op: er zullen nog drie koningen over Perzië komen.[a] En de vierde koning[b] zal nog rijker zijn dan alle anderen. En als hij door zijn rijkdom machtig is geworden, zal hij een enorm leger verzamelen tegen het koninkrijk van Griekenland. 3 Daarna zal er een machtige koning komen, die met grote macht zal heersen en die zal doen wat hij wil.[c] 4 Maar als hij nog maar pas aan de macht is, zal zijn koninkrijk in stukken worden gebroken. Het zal in vier delen verdeeld worden, maar niet aan zijn zonen.[d] Ook zullen ze niet zo machtig zijn als zijn koninkrijk vroeger was. Want zijn koninkrijk zal uit elkaar gescheurd worden en aan mannen gegeven worden die niet zullen zijn zoals hij.

5 Dan zal de koning van het Zuiden[e] machtig worden. Maar één van de vier koningen zal nog machtiger worden dan hij. Hij zal een machtig heerser worden.[f] 6 Na een aantal jaren zal de koning van het Zuiden[g] een verbond sluiten met de koning van het Noorden:[h] hij laat zijn dochter met de koning van het Noorden trouwen. Maar zij zal haar macht verliezen.[i] Ook haar vader zal zijn macht kwijtraken. Hij zal zelfs zijn leven verliezen. En zij zal worden vermoord, met alle mensen die met haar meegingen naar het noorden. Ook hij die namens haar vader toezicht op haar hield en die haar hielp, zal worden vermoord. 7 Maar uit haar familie zal iemand anders[j] koning worden. Hij zal snel machtig worden. Hij zal met zijn leger optrekken tegen de koning van het Noorden.[k] Hij zal zijn burcht veroveren en binnentrekken. 8 Hij zal hun gouden godenbeelden en alle kostbare voorwerpen van goud en zilver als buit meenemen naar Egypte. Ook zal hij de godenbeelden terugbrengen die eerder door de koning van het Noorden als buit uit Egypte waren meegenomen naar het Noorden. Daarna zal hij een aantal jaren de macht hebben over de koning van het Noorden en niet tegen hem strijden.[l] 9 Daarna zal de koning van het Noorden de koning van het Zuiden aanvallen. Maar hij zal naar zijn land terug moeten trekken.

10 Daarna zullen de zonen van de koning van het Noorden een enorm leger verzamelen voor de strijd.[m] Dat leger zal snel oprukken tegen de koning van het Zuiden. Het zal als een vloedgolf over het land spoelen. Bij een tweede aanval bereikt het de burcht. 11 Dan zal de koning van het Zuiden woedend een tegenaanval doen op de koning van het Noorden. De koning van het Noorden zal een enorm groot leger verzamelen. Maar dat leger zal worden verslagen door de koning van het Zuiden. 12 De koning van het Zuiden zal er erg trots op zijn dat hij dat leger heeft kunnen vernietigen. Hij zal tienduizenden mensen afslachten.[n] Maar hij zal zijn macht verliezen.

13 Want opnieuw zal de koning van het Noorden een groot leger verzamelen, nog groter dan het vorige. Na een paar jaar zal hij daarmee snel optrekken tegen de koning van het Zuiden. Het zal een geweldig groot en goed bewapend leger zijn. 14 In die tijd zullen er veel koningen in opstand komen tegen de koning van het Zuiden.[o] Ook zullen gewelddadige mensen uit jouw eigen volk in opstand komen, om profetieën die over het land gedaan zijn zelf tot werkelijkheid te maken.[p] Maar ze zullen daar niet in slagen: ze zullen ten val komen.[q] 15 Dan zal de koning van het Noorden komen en een ommuurde stad omsingelen en veroveren.[r] De legers van het Zuiden zullen hem niet kunnen tegenhouden. Geen van hun troepen zal sterk genoeg zijn om hem te verslaan. 16 Hij die hem aanvalt zal doen wat hij wil en niemand zal hem kunnen tegenhouden. Hij zal ook het Sieraad binnentrekken.[s] Hij zal daar dood en vernietiging brengen.[t] 17 Daarna zal de koning van het Noorden proberen om de koning van het Zuiden aan zijn kant te krijgen. Hij zal daarvoor al zijn macht gebruiken. Hij zal een verbond met hem sluiten door zijn dochter te laten trouwen met de koning van het Zuiden.[u] Door haar probeert hij de macht in handen te krijgen. Maar dat plan zal niet slagen. Zij zal niet trouw aan haar vader blijven.[v] 18 Dan zal de koning van het Noorden de strijd aanbinden met de landen langs de kust.[w] Hij zal er een heel aantal van veroveren. Maar een aanvoerder zal uiteindelijk een einde maken aan zijn brutale veroveringen.[x] Maar die aanvoerder zal zich niet kunnen wreken voor het brutale gedrag van de koning van het Noorden. 19 Daarna zal de koning van het Noorden teruggaan naar de burchten van zijn eigen land. Maar hij zal worden gedood en niemand zal nog van hem horen.[y]

20 Hij zal worden opgevolgd door een koning die aldoor een belastingophaler zal rondsturen om zoveel mogelijk geld voor hem op te halen.[z] Maar de koning zal na korte tijd worden gedood. Maar niet in een gevecht, en ook niet in de oorlog.[aa] 21 Na hem zal er een slecht mens aan de macht komen, maar hij zal geen koning zijn.[ab] Hij zal zijn kans afwachten en dan met bedrog en sluwheid aan de macht weten te komen. 22 Grote legers die het hele land als een rivier overspoelen, zal hij weten te vernietigen. Ook de heerser van het verbond zal hij vernietigen.[ac] 23 Iedereen met wie hij een verbond sluit, zal door hem worden bedrogen. Zo zal hij steeds machtiger worden, ook al heeft hij maar weinig aanhangers.[ad] 24 Hij zal zijn kans afwachten en dan de rijkste streken van zijn gebied plunderen. En hij zal iets doen wat geen één van zijn voorvaders ooit heeft gedaan: hij zal de rijke buit verdelen onder zijn aanhangers.[ae] Ook zal hij plannen smeden om de ommuurde steden te veroveren. Maar dat zal hij maar een beperkte tijd kunnen doen.

25 Dan zal hij met al zijn kracht en inspanning de koning van het Zuiden aanvallen met een groot leger. En de koning van het Zuiden zal een enorm groot leger verzamelen om tegen hem te strijden. Maar hij zal niet winnen: hij verliest door samenzweringen tegen hem. 26 Want zijn eigen vrienden zullen hem verraden en zijn leger zal volledig worden vernietigd.[af] Er zullen veel doden vallen. 27 En die twee koningen zullen allebei proberen de ander te bedriegen. Ze zullen allebei doen alsof ze een verbond willen sluiten. Ze zullen aan één tafel zitten en met elkaar overleggen, maar intussen proberen ze elkaar te bedriegen. Maar hun plannen zullen mislukken. Want de tijd die God heeft bepaald, is nog niet gekomen. 28 De koning van het Noorden zal met een grote buit naar zijn land teruggaan. Hij zal een vijand zijn van het land dat een verbond met God heeft. Daarom zal hij vreselijke dingen doen.[ag] Daarna zal hij teruggaan naar zijn land.

29 Op een bepaald moment zal hij opnieuw het Zuiden aanvallen. Maar deze keer zal het niet zo gaan als de vorige keer. 30 Want de Kittieten zullen met hun schepen tegen hem oprukken en zijn aanval afslaan.[ah] Daardoor zal hij de moed verliezen en teruggaan naar zijn land. Maar op de terugweg daarheen zal hij eerst zijn woede koelen op het land dat een verbond met God heeft.[ai] Hij zal zelfs een verbond sluiten met Joden die hun verbond met God verbreken. 31 Hij zal een leger naar Jeruzalem sturen. Dat zal het heiligdom en de burchten verwoesten. Hij zal ervoor zorgen dat de dagelijkse offers niet meer worden gebracht. Ze zullen een afgodsbeeld neerzetten dat vernietiging brengt.[aj]

32 En de mensen die zich niet aan hun verbond met God houden, zullen doen alsof dat niet zo is. Daardoor bederven ze het verbond. Maar de mensen die hun God werkelijk kennen, zullen sterk zijn. Zij zullen standhouden. 33 Wijze mensen van het volk zullen veel andere mensen leren hoe ze moeten leven zoals God het wil. In die tijd zullen ze vervolgd worden. Ze worden gedood, verbrand, gevangen genomen, beroofd. 34 In die tijd zullen ze weinig hulp krijgen.[ak] Veel van hen zullen doen alsof ze niet langer bij het verbond horen. 35 En ook sommige van de wijze mensen zullen zich laten verleiden om ontrouw te worden. Zo zal blijken wie echt geloof heeft en wie niet. Dat zal duren tot aan het eind van de door God vastgestelde tijd.

36 En de koning[al] zal kunnen doen wat hij wil. Daardoor zal hij trots worden en zich verbeelden dat hij machtiger is dan God. Zelfs tegen de Allerhoogste God zal hij beledigende dingen durven zeggen. En het zal goed met hem gaan, totdat zijn tijd om is en God hem straft. Want het staat vast dat dit zal gebeuren. 37 Hij zal zich niet bezighouden met de goden van zijn voorouders. Hij zal zich niets aantrekken van de god die zijn vrouwen aanbidden. Hij zal zich ook van God niets aantrekken. Want hij zal doen alsof hij hoger is dan alle goden. 38 Hij zal een god aanbidden die zijn voorouders nooit hebben gediend: de god van de burchten. Die zal hij aanbidden met goud, zilver, edelstenen en kostbare voorwerpen. 39 Met de hulp van deze god zal hij de grote steden aanvallen en veroveren. Iedereen die dezelfde god aanbidt, zal hij belonen. Hij zal hen tot heersers over veel grote steden maken. Hij zal hun een groot gebied geven tegen een hoge prijs.

40 Maar aan het eind van de tijd zal de koning van het Zuiden hem aanvallen. En de koning van het Noorden zal een snelle aanval op hem doen met strijdwagens en ruiters en heel veel schepen. Hij zal landen binnenvallen en zijn legers zullen als een vloedgolf over de landen spoelen. 41 Ook het Sieraad zal hij binnenvallen. Veel mensen zullen worden gedood. Maar Edom, Moab en een deel van de Ammonieten zullen van hem weinig schade oplopen. 42 Hij zal landen veroveren. Ook Egypte. 43 Hij zal alle verborgen schatten veroveren: goud, zilver en kostbare voorwerpen. Ook alle schatten van Egypte. Hij zal dat doen met de hulp van Libië en Ethiopië, die zich bij hem zullen aansluiten. 44 Maar berichten uit het oosten en het noorden zullen hem ongerust maken.[am] Woedend zal hij tekeer gaan en dood en vernietiging brengen. 45 Hij zal zijn koninklijke tenten opzetten tussen de zeeën, op de berg van het heilig Sieraad. Maar daar zal hij worden gedood en niemand zal hem redden. (lees verder)

  11. Daniël 11:7 Om wraak te nemen voor de echtscheiding en voor de moord op zijn zus Berenice. Daar regeerde nu Seleucis II, zoon van de vrouw die haar vermoord had.

  27. Daniël 11:20 Hij werd vermoord bij een aanslag.
  28. Daniël 11:21 Antiochus IV, de broer van Seleucis IV. Officieel was hij geen koning, maar hij regeerde in plaats van de koning, samen met nog iemand. Hij wist vrede te sluiten met Rome. Daarna veroverde hij Egypte met een enorm leger. Op weg naar Egypte sloeg hij zijn kamp op in Jeruzalem. Daar vermoordde hij de hogepriester die in die tijd Israël leidde.
  29. Daniël 11:22 Met de 'heerser van het verbond' zou de hogepriester van die tijd bedoeld kunnen zijn, maar dat is niet zeker.
  30. Daniël 11:23 In het begin had Antiochus IV maar weinig macht. Ook zijn leger was in het begin maar klein. Hij wist het echter goed te gebruiken. Maar door sluwe listen, bedrog en moord wist hij zijn macht te vergroten. Hij hield bijvoorbeeld Egypte in zijn macht door er twee van zijn neven te plaatsen.
  31. Daniël 11:24 Hij plunderde onder andere Galilea. De buit gebruikte hij om mensen te belonen of om te kopen en om dure feesten voor hen te organiseren.
  32. Daniël 11:26 Van de buit van zijn plundertochten schafte Antiochus IV ook een groot leger aan. Daarmee trok hij opnieuw naar Egypte. Hij kocht mensen aan het Egyptische hof om. Zij smeedden een samenzwering tegen de Egyptische koning. Daardoor kon Antiochus de strijd winnen. Maar de belangrijkste stad, de havenstad Alexandrië, kreeg hij nog niet in handen. Zijn macht in Egypte was daardoor vrij wankel.
  33. Daniël 11:28 Onderweg naar huis trok Antiochus IV weer door Israël. Hij plunderde de tempel en doodde grote aantallen Joden, omdat zij zich verzetten tegen de door Antiochus bevolen 'vergrieksing' met Griekse goden.
  34. Daniël 11:30 De tweede keer dat Antiochus Egypte aanviel, zocht Egypte hulp bij Rome. Een grote Romeinse vloot uit Cyprus (de 'Kittieten') kwam Ptolemeüs te hulp. Antiochus moest zich terugtrekken.
  35. Daniël 11:30 Bij Antiochus' terugkeer naar Syrië viel hij Jeruzalem aan. Hij doodde heel veel Joden, uit woede over zijn nederlaag. Hij bedierf de tempel van God door een varken te offeren op het altaar. Een varken is voor de Joden een onrein dier. Verder verbood hij de offers van de Joden. Ook zette hij een beeld van de Griekse god Zeus in de tempel neer. Hij gebruikte Joodse overlopers voor de vervolging van de Joden. Het was een vreselijke tijd.
  36. Daniël 11:31 Vanaf hoofdstuk 11 vers 32 passen de gebeurtenissen niet langer op dat wat er al in de oude geschiedenis is gebeurd. Het gaat daar dus over dingen die veel later gaan gebeuren. En een deel daarvan pas aan het eind van de tijd. Vers 31 is als het ware het 'keerpunt'. Wat daar beschreven wordt, is ver vóór Jezus' tijd gedaan door koning Antiochus IV, maar gaat óók over iets wat nog in de toekomst gaat gebeuren. Dat blijkt uit Matteüs 24:15. Daar zegt Jezus van dit vers dat het gaat over iets in de toekomst.
  37. Daniël 11:34 In de eerste eeuw werd Jeruzalem verwoest door de Romeinen. Maar ook daarna zijn de Joden regelmatig vervolgd. Denk bijvoorbeeld aan wat er in de Tweede Wereldoorlog gebeurd is. Deze dingen gaan door tot aan het eind van de tijd.
  38. Daniël 11:36 Hier wordt niet gesproken over 'de koning van het Noorden' of 'de koning van het Zuiden'. Maar gewoon over 'de koning'. Het gaat hier dus over iemand anders, waarvan nog niet duidelijk is wie het is. Een koning in de toekomst.

11 1 And in the first year of Darius(A) the Mede, I took my stand to support and protect him.)

The Kings of the South and the North

2 “Now then, I tell you the truth:(B) Three more kings will arise in Persia, and then a fourth, who will be far richer than all the others. When he has gained power by his wealth, he will stir up everyone against the kingdom of Greece.(C) 3 Then a mighty king will arise, who will rule with great power and do as he pleases.(D) 4 After he has arisen, his empire will be broken up and parceled out toward the four winds of heaven.(E) It will not go to his descendants, nor will it have the power he exercised, because his empire will be uprooted(F) and given to others.

5 “The king of the South will become strong, but one of his commanders will become even stronger than he and will rule his own kingdom with great power. 6 After some years, they will become allies. The daughter of the king of the South will go to the king of the North to make an alliance, but she will not retain her power, and he and his power[a] will not last. In those days she will be betrayed, together with her royal escort and her father[b] and the one who supported her.

7 “One from her family line will arise to take her place. He will attack the forces of the king of the North(G) and enter his fortress; he will fight against them and be victorious. 8 He will also seize their gods,(H) their metal images and their valuable articles of silver and gold and carry them off to Egypt.(I) For some years he will leave the king of the North alone. 9 Then the king of the North will invade the realm of the king of the South but will retreat to his own country. 10 His sons will prepare for war and assemble a great army, which will sweep on like an irresistible flood(J) and carry the battle as far as his fortress.

11 “Then the king of the South will march out in a rage and fight against the king of the North, who will raise a large army, but it will be defeated.(K) 12 When the army is carried off, the king of the South will be filled with pride and will slaughter many thousands, yet he will not remain triumphant. 13 For the king of the North will muster another army, larger than the first; and after several years, he will advance with a huge army fully equipped.

14 “In those times many will rise against the king of the South. Those who are violent among your own people will rebel in fulfillment of the vision, but without success. 15 Then the king of the North will come and build up siege ramps(L) and will capture a fortified city. The forces of the South will be powerless to resist; even their best troops will not have the strength to stand. 16 The invader will do as he pleases;(M) no one will be able to stand against him.(N) He will establish himself in the Beautiful Land and will have the power to destroy it.(O) 17 He will determine to come with the might of his entire kingdom and will make an alliance with the king of the South. And he will give him a daughter in marriage in order to overthrow the kingdom, but his plans[c] will not succeed(P) or help him. 18 Then he will turn his attention to the coastlands(Q) and will take many of them, but a commander will put an end to his insolence and will turn his insolence back on him.(R) 19 After this, he will turn back toward the fortresses of his own country but will stumble and fall,(S) to be seen no more.(T)

20 “His successor will send out a tax collector to maintain the royal splendor.(U) In a few years, however, he will be destroyed, yet not in anger or in battle.

21 “He will be succeeded by a contemptible(V) person who has not been given the honor of royalty.(W) He will invade the kingdom when its people feel secure, and he will seize it through intrigue. 22 Then an overwhelming army will be swept away(X) before him; both it and a prince of the covenant will be destroyed.(Y) 23 After coming to an agreement with him, he will act deceitfully,(Z) and with only a few people he will rise to power. 24 When the richest provinces feel secure, he will invade them and will achieve what neither his fathers nor his forefathers did. He will distribute plunder, loot and wealth among his followers.(AA) He will plot the overthrow of fortresses—but only for a time.

25 “With a large army he will stir up his strength and courage against the king of the South. The king of the South will wage war with a large and very powerful army, but he will not be able to stand because of the plots devised against him. 26 Those who eat from the king’s provisions will try to destroy him; his army will be swept away, and many will fall in battle. 27 The two kings, with their hearts bent on evil,(AB) will sit at the same table and lie(AC) to each other, but to no avail, because an end will still come at the appointed time.(AD) 28 The king of the North will return to his own country with great wealth, but his heart will be set against the holy covenant. He will take action against it and then return to his own country.

29 “At the appointed time he will invade the South again, but this time the outcome will be different from what it was before. 30 Ships of the western coastlands(AE) will oppose him, and he will lose heart.(AF) Then he will turn back and vent his fury(AG) against the holy covenant. He will return and show favor to those who forsake the holy covenant.

31 “His armed forces will rise up to desecrate the temple fortress and will abolish the daily sacrifice.(AH) Then they will set up the abomination that causes desolation.(AI) 32 With flattery he will corrupt those who have violated the covenant, but the people who know their God will firmly resist(AJ) him.

33 “Those who are wise will instruct(AK) many, though for a time they will fall by the sword or be burned or captured or plundered.(AL) 34 When they fall, they will receive a little help, and many who are not sincere(AM) will join them. 35 Some of the wise will stumble, so that they may be refined,(AN) purified and made spotless until the time of the end, for it will still come at the appointed time.

The King Who Exalts Himself

36 “The king will do as he pleases. He will exalt and magnify himself(AO) above every god and will say unheard-of things(AP) against the God of gods.(AQ) He will be successful until the time of wrath(AR) is completed, for what has been determined must take place.(AS) 37 He will show no regard for the gods of his ancestors or for the one desired by women, nor will he regard any god, but will exalt himself above them all. 38 Instead of them, he will honor a god of fortresses; a god unknown to his ancestors he will honor with gold and silver, with precious stones and costly gifts. 39 He will attack the mightiest fortresses with the help of a foreign god and will greatly honor those who acknowledge him. He will make them rulers over many people and will distribute the land at a price.[d]

40 “At the time of the end the king of the South(AT) will engage him in battle, and the king of the North will storm(AU) out against him with chariots and cavalry and a great fleet of ships. He will invade many countries and sweep through them like a flood.(AV) 41 He will also invade the Beautiful Land.(AW) Many countries will fall, but Edom,(AX) Moab(AY) and the leaders of Ammon will be delivered from his hand. 42 He will extend his power over many countries; Egypt will not escape. 43 He will gain control of the treasures of gold and silver and all the riches of Egypt,(AZ) with the Libyans(BA) and Cushites[e] in submission. 44 But reports from the east and the north will alarm him, and he will set out in a great rage to destroy and annihilate many. 45 He will pitch his royal tents between the seas at[f] the beautiful holy mountain.(BB) Yet he will come to his end, and no one will help him.

2 And now will I shew thee the truth. Behold, there shall stand up yet three kings in Persia; and the fourth shall be far richer than they all: and by his strength through his riches he shall stir up all against the realm of Grecia.

3 And a mighty king shall stand up, that shall rule with great dominion, and do according to his will.

4 And when he shall stand up, his kingdom shall be broken, and shall be divided toward the four winds of heaven; and not to his posterity, nor according to his dominion which he ruled: for his kingdom shall be plucked up, even for others beside those.

5 And the king of the south shall be strong, and one of his princes; and he shall be strong above him, and have dominion; his dominion shall be a great dominion.

6 And in the end of years they shall join themselves together; for the king's daughter of the south shall come to the king of the north to make an agreement: but she shall not retain the power of the arm; neither shall he stand, nor his arm: but she shall be given up, and they that brought her, and he that begat her, and he that strengthened her in these times.

7 But out of a branch of her roots shall one stand up in his estate, which shall come with an army, and shall enter into the fortress of the king of the north, and shall deal against them, and shall prevail:

8 And shall also carry captives into Egypt their gods, with their princes, and with their precious vessels of silver and of gold; and he shall continue more years than the king of the north.

9 So the king of the south shall come into his kingdom, and shall return into his own land.

10 But his sons shall be stirred up, and shall assemble a multitude of great forces: and one shall certainly come, and overflow, and pass through: then shall he return, and be stirred up, even to his fortress.

11 And the king of the south shall be moved with choler, and shall come forth and fight with him, even with the king of the north: and he shall set forth a great multitude; but the multitude shall be given into his hand.

12 And when he hath taken away the multitude, his heart shall be lifted up; and he shall cast down many ten thousands: but he shall not be strengthened by it.

13 For the king of the north shall return, and shall set forth a multitude greater than the former, and shall certainly come after certain years with a great army and with much riches.

14 And in those times there shall many stand up against the king of the south: also the robbers of thy people shall exalt themselves to establish the vision; but they shall fall.

15 So the king of the north shall come, and cast up a mount, and take the most fenced cities: and the arms of the south shall not withstand, neither his chosen people, neither shall there be any strength to withstand.

16 But he that cometh against him shall do according to his own will, and none shall stand before him: and he shall stand in the glorious land, which by his hand shall be consumed.

17 He shall also set his face to enter with the strength of his whole kingdom, and upright ones with him; thus shall he do: and he shall give him the daughter of women, corrupting her: but she shall not stand on his side, neither be for him.

18 After this shall he turn his face unto the isles, and shall take many: but a prince for his own behalf shall cause the reproach offered by him to cease; without his own reproach he shall cause it to turn upon him.

19 Then he shall turn his face toward the fort of his own land: but he shall stumble and fall, and not be found.

20 Then shall stand up in his estate a raiser of taxes in the glory of the kingdom: but within few days he shall be destroyed, neither in anger, nor in battle.

21 And in his estate shall stand up a vile person, to whom they shall not give the honour of the kingdom: but he shall come in peaceably, and obtain the kingdom by flatteries.

22 And with the arms of a flood shall they be overflown from before him, and shall be broken; yea, also the prince of the covenant.

23 And after the league made with him he shall work deceitfully: for he shall come up, and shall become strong with a small people.

24 He shall enter peaceably even upon the fattest places of the province; and he shall do that which his fathers have not done, nor his fathers' fathers; he shall scatter among them the prey, and spoil, and riches: yea, and he shall forecast his devices against the strong holds, even for a time.

25 And he shall stir up his power and his courage against the king of the south with a great army; and the king of the south shall be stirred up to battle with a very great and mighty army; but he shall not stand: for they shall forecast devices against him.

26 Yea, they that feed of the portion of his meat shall destroy him, and his army shall overflow: and many shall fall down slain.

27 And both of these kings' hearts shall be to do mischief, and they shall speak lies at one table; but it shall not prosper: for yet the end shall be at the time appointed.

28 Then shall he return into his land with great riches; and his heart shall be against the holy covenant; and he shall do exploits, and return to his own land.

29 At the time appointed he shall return, and come toward the south; but it shall not be as the former, or as the latter.

30 For the ships of Chittim shall come against him: therefore he shall be grieved, and return, and have indignation against the holy covenant: so shall he do; he shall even return, and have intelligence with them that forsake the holy covenant.

31 And arms shall stand on his part, and they shall pollute the sanctuary of strength, and shall take away the daily sacrifice, and they shall place the abomination that maketh desolate.

32 And such as do wickedly against the covenant shall he corrupt by flatteries: but the people that do know their God shall be strong, and do exploits.

33 And they that understand among the people shall instruct many: yet they shall fall by the sword, and by flame, by captivity, and by spoil, many days.

34 Now when they shall fall, they shall be holpen with a little help: but many shall cleave to them with flatteries.

35 And some of them of understanding shall fall, to try them, and to purge, and to make them white, even to the time of the end: because it is yet for a time appointed.

36 And the king shall do according to his will; and he shall exalt himself, and magnify himself above every god, and shall speak marvellous things against the God of gods, and shall prosper till the indignation be accomplished: for that that is determined shall be done.

37 Neither shall he regard the God of his fathers, nor the desire of women, nor regard any god: for he shall magnify himself above all.

38 But in his estate shall he honour the God of forces: and a god whom his fathers knew not shall he honour with gold, and silver, and with precious stones, and pleasant things.

39 Thus shall he do in the most strong holds with a strange god, whom he shall acknowledge and increase with glory: and he shall cause them to rule over many, and shall divide the land for gain.

40 And at the time of the end shall the king of the south push at him: and the king of the north shall come against him like a whirlwind, with chariots, and with horsemen, and with many ships; and he shall enter into the countries, and shall overflow and pass over.

41 He shall enter also into the glorious land, and many countries shall be overthrown: but these shall escape out of his hand, even Edom, and Moab, and the chief of the children of Ammon.

42 He shall stretch forth his hand also upon the countries: and the land of Egypt shall not escape.

43 But he shall have power over the treasures of gold and of silver, and over all the precious things of Egypt: and the Libyans and the Ethiopians shall be at his steps.

44 But tidings out of the east and out of the north shall trouble him: therefore he shall go forth with great fury to destroy, and utterly to make away many.

45 And he shall plant the tabernacles of his palace between the seas in the glorious holy mountain; yet he shall come to his end, and none shall help him.

He will refrain some years from the king of the north. 9 He will come into the realm of the king of the south, but he will return into his own land. 10 His sons will wage war, and will assemble a multitude of great forces which will come on, and overflow, and pass through. They will return and wage war, even to his fortress.

11 “The king of the south will be moved with anger and will come out and fight with him, even with the king of the north. He will send out a great multitude, and the multitude will be given into his hand. 12 The multitude will be carried off, and his heart will be exalted. He will cast down tens of thousands, but he won’t prevail. 13 The king of the north will return, and will send out a multitude greater than the former. He will come on at the end of the times, even of years, with a great army and with abundant supplies.

14 “In those times many will stand up against the king of the south. Also the children of the violent among your people will lift themselves up to establish the vision, but they will fall. 15 So the king of the north will come and cast up a mound, and take a well-fortified city. The forces of the south won’t stand, neither will his select troops, neither will there be any strength to stand. 16 But he who comes against him will do according to his own will, and no one will stand before him. He will stand in the glorious land, and destruction will be in his hand. 17 He will set his face to come with the strength of his whole kingdom, and with him equitable conditions. He will perform them. He will give him the daughter of women, to destroy the kingdom, but she will not stand, and won’t be for him. 18 After this he will turn his face to the islands, and will take many, but a prince will cause the reproach offered by him to cease. Yes, moreover, he will cause his reproach to turn on him. 19 Then he will turn his face toward the fortresses of his own land; but he will stumble and fall, and won’t be found.

20 “Then one who will cause a tax collector to pass through the kingdom to maintain its glory will stand up in his place; but within few days he shall be destroyed, not in anger, and not in battle.

21 “In his place a contemptible person will stand up, to whom they had not given the honor of the kingdom; but he will come in time of security, and will obtain the kingdom by flatteries. 22 The overwhelming forces will be overwhelmed from before him, and will be broken. Yes, also the prince of the covenant. 23 After the treaty made with him he will work deceitfully; for he will come up and will become strong with few people. 24 In time of security he will come even on the fattest places of the province. He will do that which his fathers have not done, nor his fathers’ fathers. He will scatter among them prey, plunder, and wealth. Yes, he will devise his plans against the strongholds, but only for a time.

25 “He will stir up his power and his courage against the king of the south with a great army; and the king of the south will wage war in battle with an exceedingly great and mighty army, but he won’t stand; for they will devise plans against him. 26 Yes, those who eat of his delicacies will destroy him, and his army will be swept away. Many will fall down slain. 27 As for both these kings, their hearts will be to do evil, and they will speak lies at one table; but it won’t prosper, for the end will still be at the appointed time. 28 Then he will return into his land with great wealth. His heart will be against the holy covenant. He will take action, and return to his own land.

29 “He will return at the appointed time and come into the south; but it won’t be in the latter time as it was in the former. 30 For ships of Kittim will come against him. Therefore he will be grieved, and will return, and have indignation against the holy covenant, and will take action. He will even return, and have regard to those who forsake the holy covenant.

31 “Forces from him will profane the sanctuary, even the fortress, and will take away the continual burnt offering. Then they will set up the abomination that makes desolate. 32 He will corrupt those who do wickedly against the covenant by flatteries; but the people who know their God will be strong and take action.

33 “Those who are wise among the people will instruct many; yet they will fall by the sword and by flame, by captivity and by plunder, many days. 34 Now when they fall, they will be helped with a little help; but many will join themselves to them with flatteries. 35 Some of those who are wise will fall—to refine them, and to purify, and to make them white, even to the time of the end, because it is yet for the time appointed.

36 “The king will do according to his will. He will exalt himself and magnify himself above every god, and will speak marvelous things against the God of gods. He will prosper until the indignation is accomplished, for that which is determined will be done. 37 He won’t regard the gods of his fathers, or the desire of women, or regard any god; for he will magnify himself above all. 38 But in their place, he will honor the god of fortresses. He will honor a god whom his fathers didn’t know with gold, silver, and with precious stones and pleasant things. 39 He will deal with the strongest fortresses by the help of a foreign god. 40 “At the time of the end the king of the south will contend with him; and the king of the north will come against him like a whirlwind, with chariots, with horsemen, and with many ships.
