44 “我的仆人雅各，我所拣选的以色列啊，现在你当听！ 2 造做你，又从你出胎造就你，并要帮助你的耶和华如此说：‘我的仆人雅各，我所拣选的耶书仑哪，不要害怕！ 3 因为我要将水浇灌口渴的人，将河浇灌干旱之地，我要将我的灵浇灌你的后裔，将我的福浇灌你的子孙。 4 他们要发生在草中，像溪水旁的柳树。 5 这个要说“我是属耶和华的”，那个要以雅各的名自称，又一个要亲手写“归耶和华的”[a]，并自称为以色列。’
6 “耶和华以色列的君，以色列的救赎主，万军之耶和华如此说：‘我是首先的，我是末后的，除我以外，再没有真神。 7 自从我设立古时的民，谁能像我宣告并且指明，又为自己陈说呢？让他将未来的事和必成的事说明。 8 你们不要恐惧，也不要害怕！我岂不是从上古就说明指示你们吗？并且你们是我的见证。除我以外，岂有真神吗？诚然没有磐石，我不知道一个！’”
制造偶像虚妄无益
9 制造雕刻偶像的尽都虚空，他们所喜悦的都无益处。他们的见证无所看见，无所知晓，他们便觉羞愧。 10 谁制造神像，铸造无益的偶像？ 11 看哪，他的同伴都必羞愧，工匠也不过是人。任他们聚会，任他们站立，都必惧怕，一同羞愧。
12 铁匠把铁在火炭中烧热，用锤打铁器，用他有力的膀臂锤成，他饥饿而无力，不喝水而发倦。 13 木匠拉线，用笔划出样子，用刨子刨成形状，用圆尺划了模样，仿照人的体态，做成人形，好住在房屋中。 14 他砍伐香柏树，又取柞树[b]和橡树，在树林中选定了一棵。他栽种松树得雨长养， 15 这树人可用以烧火。他自己取些烤火，又烧着烤饼，而且做神像跪拜，做雕刻的偶像向它叩拜。 16 他把一份烧在火中，把一份烤肉吃饱，自己烤火说：“啊哈！我暖和了，我见火了。” 17 他用剩下的做了一神，就是雕刻的偶像，他向这偶像俯伏叩拜，祷告他说：“求你拯救我，因你是我的神。”
18 他们不知道，也不思想，因为耶和华闭住他们的眼不能看见，塞住他们的心不能明白。 19 谁心里也不醒悟，也没有知识，没有聪明，能说：“我曾拿一份在火中烧了，在炭火上烤过饼，我也烤过肉吃。这剩下的，我岂要做可憎的物吗？我岂可向木墩子叩拜呢？” 20 他以灰为食，心中昏迷使他偏邪，他不能自救，也不能说：“我右手中岂不是有虚谎吗？”
当歌颂耶和华救赎之恩
21 “雅各，以色列啊，你是我的仆人，要记念这些事！以色列啊，你是我的仆人，我造就你，必不忘记你。 22 我涂抹了你的过犯，像厚云消散；我涂抹了你的罪恶，如薄云灭没。你当归向我，因我救赎了你。” 23 诸天哪，应当歌唱！因为耶和华做成这事。地的深处啊，应当欢呼！众山应当发声歌唱，树林和其中所有的树，都当如此！因为耶和华救赎了雅各，并要因以色列荣耀自己。
24 从你出胎造就你的救赎主耶和华如此说：“我耶和华是创造万物的，是独自铺张诸天、铺开大地的（谁与我同在呢？）， 25 使说假话的兆头失效，使占卜的癫狂，使智慧人退后，使他的知识变为愚拙， 26 使我仆人的话语立定，我使者的谋算成就。论到耶路撒冷说：‘必有人居住。’论到犹大的城邑说：‘必被建造，其中的荒场，我也必兴起。’ 27 对深渊说：‘你干了吧！我也要使你的江河干涸。’ 28 论居鲁士说：‘他是我的牧人，必成就我所喜悦的，必下令建造耶路撒冷，发命立稳圣殿的根基。’

44 De Heer zegt: "Maar luister nu, volk van Israël dat Ik heb uitgekozen om Mij te dienen. 2 Dit zegt de Heer: Ik ben jouw Maker. Door Mij ben jij ontstaan. Ik help je. Wees niet bang, mijn dienaar Israël. Ik noem je mijn lieveling. Ik heb jou uitgekozen. 3 Ik zal water gieten op droge grond. Ik zal beken maken in het uitgedroogde land. Ik zal mijn Geest uitstorten op je familie ná jou. Ik zal mijn zegen uitstorten op je kinderen. 4 Ze zullen opgroeien als bomen in het gras. Ze zullen gezond en sterk zijn als wilgen die langs de beek staan. 5 De één zal zeggen: 'Ik ben van de Heer.' Een ander zal zeggen: 'Ik hoor bij het volk Israël.' Een derde zal opschrijven: 'Van de Heer' en zal zichzelf de erenaam 'Israël' geven.
6 Dit zegt de Heer, de Koning en Redder van Israël, de Heer van de hemelse legers: Ik ben de Eerste en de Laatste. Er is geen andere God dan Ik. 7 Ik vertel van tevoren wat er gaat gebeuren. Dat doe Ik al sinds Ik de mensheid heb gemaakt. Wie kan dat ook? Laat hij dan roepen en het Mij bewijzen. 8 Israël, wees niet bang. Ik heb het jullie toch van tevoren verteld? Zeg zelf maar: is er nóg een god behalve Ik? Er is geen andere god zo betrouwbaar en machtig als Ik. Ik ken er geen."
Het is belachelijk om hulp te verwachten van godenbeelden
9 De Heer zegt: "De mensen die godenbeelden maken, zijn dwaas bezig. Want die zelfgemaakte beelden waar ze zoveel van houden, kunnen niets voor hen doen. Dat laten ze zelf duidelijk zien: ze zien niets en weten niets. Daarom zullen de mensen die hen aanbidden, bedrogen uitkomen. Ze zullen voor schut staan. 10 Wie maakt er nu een god, een beeld waar hij niets aan heeft? 11 Iedereen die dat doet, zal bedrogen uitkomen en voor schut komen te staan. Want die beelden zijn maar gewoon door mensen gemaakt. Laten die mensen hier komen en hier terechtstaan. Ze zullen beven van schrik en voor schut komen te staan.
12 Een smid werkt met zijn tang in de hitte van het vuur. Zo vormt hij met zijn hamers een beeld. Hij werkt er hard aan. Hij heeft geen tijd om te eten en te drinken. Hij werkt door totdat hij te moe is om verder te gaan en helemaal uitgeput is.
13 Een timmerman meet met zijn meetlint de vorm van een beeld af. Die tekent hij af met krijt. Hij bewerkt het beeld met een schaaf, meet met een passer de maten af. Zo maakt hij een beeld dat op een man lijkt. Het wordt een heel mooi beeld, om bij iemand in huis neer te zetten. 14 Hij had er een jonge cederboom, eikenboom of dennenboom voor omgehakt. Hij had die van tevoren uitgekozen en voor zichzelf opgekweekt tussen de bomen van het bos. De regen zorgde ervoor dat de boom groot werd. 15 Van een deel van de omgehakte boom hakt hij brandhout. Bij het vuur warmt hij zich. Ook maakt hij een vuur waarop hij zijn brood bakt. Van een ander deel van de boom maakt hij een godenbeeld, knielt ervoor neer en aanbidt het. 16 Dus van de ene helft van het hout maakt hij een vuur waarop hij het vlees braadt voor de maaltijd. Ook houdt hij zich warm bij het vuur en geniet van de warmte. 17 En van de rest van het hout maakt hij een god, een beeld. Hij knielt ervoor, aanbidt het en zegt: 'Red mij, want u bent mijn god!'
18 De mensen zijn onverstandig en begrijpen niets. Hun ogen zitten dichtgeplakt, zodat ze niets zien. Hun binnenste zit verstopt, zodat ze niets begrijpen. 19 Niemand denkt na. Niemand vraagt zich af: 'Als ik van de ene helft van het hout vuur maak waarop ik brood bak en vlees braad, hoe kan ik dan van de rest van het hout een god maken? Hoe kom ik erbij om neer te knielen voor een blok hout?' 20 Hij vertrouwt op iets wat eigenlijk maar as is. Hij houdt zichzelf voor de gek. Hij komt bedrogen uit. Hij heeft niet door dat hij in een leugen gelooft.
21 Denk hierover na, volk van Israël! Want jij bent mijn dienaar. Ik heb je gemaakt. Jij bent mijn dienaar. Ik ben je niet vergeten. 22 Ik blaas al je ongehoorzaamheid weg als mist, als een wolk. Kom weer bij Mij terug, want Ik heb je gered."
23 Jesaja zegt: Hemel, juich voor wat de Heer heeft gedaan. Diepte van de aarde, juich! Bergen, jubel het uit met je bossen en al je bomen! Want de Heer heeft het volk Israël gered en Hij toont zijn hemelse macht en majesteit in Israël.
God belooft dat de verwoeste steden weer opgebouwd zullen worden
24 Dit zegt de Heer: "Ik ben jullie Redder en jullie Maker. Ik heb jullie gemaakt in de buik van je moeder. Ik ben de Heer, die alles doet. Ik zet de hemel neer boven de aarde. Ik alleen heb dat gedaan. Door mijn kracht bestaat de aarde. 25 Ik ontmasker de leugen-profeten. Ik laat zien dat de waarzeggers maar dwazen zijn. Ik laat zien dat de wijze mensen eigenlijk niets weten, maar dwaas zijn. 26 Ik doe wat Ik door mijn dienaren zeg. Wat mijn boodschappers zeggen, zal ook gebeuren. Ik zeg tegen Jeruzalem: 'Je zal weer bewoond worden.' En tegen de steden van Juda: 'Jullie zullen herbouwd worden.' Ik zal de steden weer op hun puinhopen opbouwen. 27 Ik zeg tegen de waterdiepten: 'Verdroog!' en de rivieren zullen verdrogen. 28 Ik zeg over Kores:[a] 'Hij is mijn herder! Hij zal doen wat Ik wil. Hij zal opdracht geven dat Jeruzalem en de tempel moeten worden herbouwd.'

44 “But now listen, Jacob, my servant,(A)
Israel, whom I have chosen.(B)
2 This is what the Lord says—
he who made(C) you, who formed you in the womb,(D)
and who will help(E) you:
Do not be afraid,(F) Jacob, my servant,(G)
Jeshurun,[a](H) whom I have chosen.
3 For I will pour water(I) on the thirsty land,
and streams on the dry ground;(J)
I will pour out my Spirit(K) on your offspring,
and my blessing(L) on your descendants.(M)
4 They will spring up like grass(N) in a meadow,
like poplar trees(O) by flowing streams.(P)
5 Some will say, ‘I belong(Q) to the Lord’;
others will call themselves by the name of Jacob;
still others will write on their hand,(R) ‘The Lord’s,’(S)
and will take the name Israel.
The Lord, Not Idols
6 “This is what the Lord says—
Israel’s King(T) and Redeemer,(U) the Lord Almighty:
I am the first and I am the last;(V)
apart from me there is no God.(W)
7 Who then is like me?(X) Let him proclaim it.
Let him declare and lay out before me
what has happened since I established my ancient people,
and what is yet to come—
yes, let them foretell(Y) what will come.
8 Do not tremble, do not be afraid.
Did I not proclaim(Z) this and foretell it long ago?
You are my witnesses. Is there any God(AA) besides me?
No, there is no other Rock;(AB) I know not one.”
9 All who make idols(AC) are nothing,
and the things they treasure are worthless.(AD)
Those who would speak up for them are blind;(AE)
they are ignorant, to their own shame.(AF)
10 Who shapes a god and casts an idol,(AG)
which can profit nothing?(AH)
11 People who do that will be put to shame;(AI)
such craftsmen are only human beings.
Let them all come together and take their stand;
they will be brought down to terror and shame.(AJ)
12 The blacksmith(AK) takes a tool
and works with it in the coals;
he shapes an idol with hammers,
he forges it with the might of his arm.(AL)
He gets hungry and loses his strength;
he drinks no water and grows faint.(AM)
13 The carpenter(AN) measures with a line
and makes an outline with a marker;
he roughs it out with chisels
and marks it with compasses.
He shapes it in human form,(AO)
human form in all its glory,
that it may dwell in a shrine.(AP)
14 He cut down cedars,
or perhaps took a cypress or oak.
He let it grow among the trees of the forest,
or planted a pine,(AQ) and the rain made it grow.
15 It is used as fuel(AR) for burning;
some of it he takes and warms himself,
he kindles a fire and bakes bread.
But he also fashions a god and worships(AS) it;
he makes an idol and bows(AT) down to it.
16 Half of the wood he burns in the fire;
over it he prepares his meal,
he roasts his meat and eats his fill.
He also warms himself and says,
“Ah! I am warm; I see the fire.(AU)”
17 From the rest he makes a god, his idol;
he bows down to it and worships.(AV)
He prays(AW) to it and says,
“Save(AX) me! You are my god!”
18 They know nothing, they understand(AY) nothing;
their eyes(AZ) are plastered over so they cannot see,
and their minds closed so they cannot understand.
19 No one stops to think,
no one has the knowledge or understanding(BA) to say,
“Half of it I used for fuel;(BB)
I even baked bread over its coals,
I roasted meat and I ate.
Shall I make a detestable(BC) thing from what is left?
Shall I bow down to a block of wood?”(BD)
20 Such a person feeds on ashes;(BE) a deluded(BF) heart misleads him;
he cannot save himself, or say,
“Is not this thing in my right hand a lie?(BG)”
21 “Remember(BH) these things, Jacob,
for you, Israel, are my servant.(BI)
I have made you, you are my servant;(BJ)
Israel, I will not forget you.(BK)
22 I have swept away(BL) your offenses like a cloud,
your sins like the morning mist.
Return(BM) to me,
for I have redeemed(BN) you.”
23 Sing for joy,(BO) you heavens, for the Lord has done this;
shout aloud, you earth(BP) beneath.
Burst into song, you mountains,(BQ)
you forests and all your trees,(BR)
for the Lord has redeemed(BS) Jacob,
he displays his glory(BT) in Israel.
Jerusalem to Be Inhabited
I am the Lord,
the Maker of all things,
who stretches out the heavens,(BX)
who spreads out the earth(BY) by myself,
25 who foils(BZ) the signs of false prophets
and makes fools of diviners,(CA)
who overthrows the learning of the wise(CB)
and turns it into nonsense,(CC)
26 who carries out the words(CD) of his servants
and fulfills(CE) the predictions of his messengers,
who says of Jerusalem,(CF) ‘It shall be inhabited,’
of the towns of Judah, ‘They shall be rebuilt,’
and of their ruins,(CG) ‘I will restore them,’(CH)
27 who says to the watery deep, ‘Be dry,
and I will dry up(CI) your streams,’
28 who says of Cyrus,(CJ) ‘He is my shepherd
and will accomplish all that I please;
he will say of Jerusalem,(CK) “Let it be rebuilt,”
and of the temple,(CL) “Let its foundations(CM) be laid.”’

3 For I will pour water upon him that is thirsty, and floods upon the dry ground: I will pour my spirit upon thy seed, and my blessing upon thine offspring:
4 And they shall spring up as among the grass, as willows by the water courses.
5 One shall say, I am the Lord's; and another shall call himself by the name of Jacob; and another shall subscribe with his hand unto the Lord, and surname himself by the name of Israel.

9 They that make a graven image are all of them vanity; and their delectable things shall not profit; and they are their own witnesses; they see not, nor know; that they may be ashamed.
10 Who hath formed a god, or molten a graven image that is profitable for nothing?
11 Behold, all his fellows shall be ashamed: and the workmen, they are of men: let them all be gathered together, let them stand up; yet they shall fear, and they shall be ashamed together.
12 The smith with the tongs both worketh in the coals, and fashioneth it with hammers, and worketh it with the strength of his arms: yea, he is hungry, and his strength faileth: he drinketh no water, and is faint.
13 The carpenter stretcheth out his rule; he marketh it out with a line; he fitteth it with planes, and he marketh it out with the compass, and maketh it after the figure of a man, according to the beauty of a man; that it may remain in the house.
14 He heweth him down cedars, and taketh the cypress and the oak, which he strengtheneth for himself among the trees of the forest: he planteth an ash, and the rain doth nourish it.
15 Then shall it be for a man to burn: for he will take thereof, and warm himself; yea, he kindleth it, and baketh bread; yea, he maketh a god, and worshippeth it; he maketh it a graven image, and falleth down thereto.

20 He feedeth on ashes: a deceived heart hath turned him aside, that he cannot deliver his soul, nor say, Is there not a lie in my right hand?
21 Remember these, O Jacob and Israel; for thou art my servant: I have formed thee; thou art my servant: O Israel, thou shalt not be forgotten of me.
22 I have blotted out, as a thick cloud, thy transgressions, and, as a cloud, thy sins: return unto me; for I have redeemed thee.
23 Sing, O ye heavens; for the Lord hath done it: shout, ye lower parts of the earth: break forth into singing, ye mountains, O forest, and every tree therein: for the Lord hath redeemed Jacob, and glorified himself in Israel.
24 Thus saith the Lord, thy redeemer, and he that formed thee from the womb, I am the Lord that maketh all things; that stretcheth forth the heavens alone; that spreadeth abroad the earth by myself;
25 That frustrateth the tokens of the liars, and maketh diviners mad; that turneth wise men backward, and maketh their knowledge foolish;

God’s Blessing on Israel
44 “Yet hear now, O Jacob My servant,
And Israel whom I have chosen.
2 Thus says the Lord who made you
And formed you from the womb, who will help you:
‘Fear not, O Jacob My servant;
And you, Jeshurun, whom I have chosen.
3 For I will pour water on him who is thirsty,
And floods on the dry ground;
I will pour My Spirit on your descendants,
And My blessing on your offspring;
4 They will spring up among the grass
Like willows by the watercourses.’
5 One will say, ‘I am the Lord’s’;
Another will call himself by the name of Jacob;
Another will write with his hand, ‘The Lord’s,’
And name himself by the name of Israel.
There Is No Other God
6 “Thus says the Lord, the King of Israel,
And his Redeemer, the Lord of hosts:
(A)‘I am the First and I am the Last;
Besides Me there is no God.
7 And (B)who can proclaim as I do?
Then let him declare it and set it in order for Me,
Since I appointed the ancient people.
And the things that are coming and shall come,
Let them show these to them.
8 Do not fear, nor be afraid;
(C)Have I not told you from that time, and declared it?
(D)You are My witnesses.
Is there a God besides Me?
Indeed (E)there is no other Rock;
I know not one.’ ”
Idolatry Is Foolishness
9 (F)Those who make an image, all of them are useless,
And their precious things shall not profit;
They are their own witnesses;
(G)They neither see nor know, that they may be ashamed.
10 Who would form a god or mold an image
(H)That profits him nothing?
11 Surely all his companions would be (I)ashamed;
And the workmen, they are mere men.
Let them all be gathered together,
Let them stand up;
Yet they shall fear,
They shall be ashamed together.
12 (J)The blacksmith with the tongs works one in the coals,
Fashions it with hammers,
And works it with the strength of his arms.
Even so, he is hungry, and his strength fails;
He drinks no water and is faint.
13 The craftsman stretches out his rule,
He marks one out with chalk;
He fashions it with a plane,
He marks it out with the compass,
And makes it like the figure of a man,
According to the beauty of a man, that it may remain in the house.
14 He cuts down cedars for himself,
And takes the cypress and the oak;
He [a]secures it for himself among the trees of the forest.
He plants a pine, and the rain nourishes it.
15 Then it shall be for a man to burn,
For he will take some of it and warm himself;
Yes, he kindles it and bakes bread;
Indeed he makes a god and worships it;
He makes it a carved image, and falls down to it.
16 He burns half of it in the fire;
With this half he eats meat;
He roasts a roast, and is satisfied.
He even warms himself and says,
“Ah! I am warm,
I have seen the fire.”
17 And the rest of it he makes into a god,
His carved image.
He falls down before it and worships it,
Prays to it and says,
“Deliver me, for you are my god!”

Israel Is Not Forgotten
21 “Remember these, O Jacob,
And Israel, for you are My servant;
I have formed you, you are My servant;

22 (R)I have blotted out, like a thick cloud, your transgressions,
And like a cloud, your sins.
Return to Me, for (S)I have redeemed you.”
23 (T)Sing, O heavens, for the Lord has done it!
Shout, you lower parts of the earth;

O forest, and every tree in it!
For the Lord has redeemed Jacob,
And (U)glorified Himself in Israel.
Judah Will Be Restored
24 Thus says the Lord, (V)your Redeemer,
And (W)He who formed you from the womb:
“I am the Lord, who makes all things,
(X)Who stretches out the heavens [c]all alone,
Who spreads abroad the earth by Myself;
25 Who (Y)frustrates the signs (Z)of the babblers,
And drives diviners mad;
Who turns wise men backward,
(AA)And makes their knowledge foolishness;
26 (AB)Who confirms the word of His servant,
And performs the counsel of His messengers;
Who says to Jerusalem, ‘You shall be inhabited,’
To the cities of Judah, ‘You shall be built,’
And I will raise up her waste places;
27 (AC)Who says to the deep, ‘Be dry!
And I will dry up your rivers’;
28 Who says of (AD)Cyrus, ‘He is My shepherd,
