33 La parole de l'Éternel me fut adressée, en ces mots:

2 Fils de l'homme, parle aux enfants de ton peuple, et dis-leur: Lorsque je fais venir l'épée sur un pays, et que le peuple du pays prend dans son sein un homme et l'établit comme sentinelle, -

3 si cet homme voit venir l'épée sur le pays, sonne de la trompette, et avertit le peuple;

4 et si celui qui entend le son de la trompette ne se laisse pas avertir, et que l'épée vienne le surprendre, son sang sera sur sa tête.

5 Il a entendu le son de la trompette, et il ne s'est pas laissé avertir, son sang sera sur lui; s'il se laisse avertir, il sauvera son âme.

6 Si la sentinelle voit venir l'épée, et ne sonne pas de la trompette; si le peuple n'est pas averti, et que l'épée vienne enlever à quelqu'un la vie, celui-ci périra à cause de son iniquité, mais je redemanderai son sang à la sentinelle.

7 Et toi, fils de l'homme, je t'ai établi comme sentinelle sur la maison d'Israël. Tu dois écouter la parole qui sort de ma bouche, et les avertir de ma part.

8 Quand je dis au méchant: Méchant, tu mourras! si tu ne parles pas pour détourner le méchant de sa voie, ce méchant mourra dans son iniquité, et je te redemanderai son sang.

9 Mais si tu avertis le méchant pour le détourner de sa voie, et qu'il ne s'en détourne pas, il mourra dans son iniquité, et toi tu sauveras ton âme.

10 Et toi, fils de l'homme, dis à la maison d'Israël: Vous dites: Nos transgressions et nos péchés sont sur nous, et c'est à cause d'eux que nous sommes frappés de langueur; comment pourrions-nous vivre?

11 Dis-leur: je suis vivant! dit le Seigneur, l'Éternel, ce que je désire, ce n'est pas que le méchant meure, c'est qu'il change de conduite et qu'il vive. Revenez, revenez de votre mauvaise voie; et pourquoi mourriez-vous, maison d'Israël?

12 Et toi, fils de l'homme, dis aux enfants de ton peuple: La justice du juste ne le sauvera pas au jour de sa transgression; et le méchant ne tombera pas par sa méchanceté le jour où il s'en détournera, de même que le juste ne pourra pas vivre par sa justice au jour de sa transgression.

13 Lorsque je dis au juste qu'il vivra, -s'il se confie dans sa justice et commet l'iniquité, toute sa justice sera oubliée, et il mourra à cause de l'iniquité qu'il a commise.

14 Lorsque je dis au méchant: Tu mourras! -s'il revient de son péché et pratique la droiture et la justice,

15 s'il rend le gage, s'il restitue ce qu'il a ravi, s'il suit les préceptes qui donnent la vie, sans commettre l'iniquité, il vivra, il ne mourra pas.

16 Tous les péchés qu'il a commis seront oubliés; il pratique la droiture et la justice, il vivra.

17 Les enfants de ton peuple disent: La voie du Seigneur n'est pas droite. C'est leur voie qui n'est pas droite.

18 Si le juste se détourne de sa justice et commet l'iniquité, il mourra à cause de cela.

19 Si le méchant revient de sa méchanceté et pratique la droiture et la justice, il vivra à cause de cela.

20 Vous dites: La voie du Seigneur n'est pas droite. Je vous jugerai chacun selon ses voies, maison d'Israël!

21 La douzième année, le cinquième jour du dixième mois de notre captivité, un homme qui s'était échappé de Jérusalem vint à moi et dit: La ville a été prise!

22 La main de l'Éternel avait été sur moi le soir avant l'arrivée du fugitif, et l'Éternel m'avait ouvert la bouche lorsqu'il vint auprès de moi le matin. Ma bouche était ouverte, et je n'étais plus muet.

23 Alors la parole de l'Éternel me fut adressée, en ces mots:

24 Fils de l'homme, ceux qui habitent ces ruines dans le pays d'Israël disent: Abraham était seul, et il a hérité le pays; à nous qui sommes nombreux, le pays est donné en possession.

25 C'est pourquoi dis-leur: Ainsi parle le Seigneur, l'Éternel: Vous mangez vos aliments avec du sang, vous levez les yeux vers vos idoles, vous répandez le sang. Et vous posséderiez le pays!

26 Vous vous appuyez sur votre épée, vous commettez des abominations, chacun de vous déshonore la femme de son prochain. Et vous posséderiez le pays!

27 Dis-leur: Ainsi parle le Seigneur, l'Éternel: Je suis vivant! Ceux qui sont parmi les ruines tomberont par l'épée; ceux qui sont dans les champs, j'en ferai la pâture des bêtes; et ceux qui sont dans les forts et dans les cavernes mourront par la peste.

28 Je réduirai le pays en solitude et en désert; l'orgueil de sa force prendra fin, les montagnes d'Israël seront désolées, personne n'y passera.

29 Et ils sauront que je suis l'Éternel, quand je réduirai le pays en solitude et en désert, à cause de toutes les abominations qu'ils ont commises.

30 Et toi, fils de l'homme, les enfants de ton peuple s'entretiennent de toi près des murs et aux portes des maisons, et ils se disent l'un à l'autre, chacun à son frère: Venez donc, et écoutez quelle est la parole qui est procédée de l'Éternel!

31 Et ils se rendent en foule auprès de toi, et mon peuple s'assied devant toi; ils écoutent tes paroles, mais ils ne les mettent point en pratique, car leur bouche en fait un sujet de moquerie, et leur coeur se livre à la cupidité.

32 Voici, tu es pour eux comme un chanteur agréable, possédant une belle voix, et habile dans la musique. Ils écoutent tes paroles, mais ils ne les mettent point en pratique.

33 Quand ces choses arriveront, -et voici, elles arrivent! -ils sauront qu'il y avait un prophète au milieu d'eux.

33 耶和华的话临到我说： 2 “人子啊！你要告诉你本国的人，说：‘我使刀剑临到一地，那地的人民从他们中间选出一个人，作他们的守望者； 3 这人见刀剑临到那地，就吹响号角，警告众人； 4 凡听见号角声而不接受警告的，刀剑若来把他除灭，他的罪（“罪”原文作“血”）就要归到自己的头上； 5 他既然听见号角声而不接受警告，所以他的罪（“罪”原文作“血”）要归到自己的身上；他若接受警告，就可以救回自己的性命了。 6 但是，那守望的人若见刀剑临到，却不吹响号角，以致人民没有受到警告，刀剑来把他们中间的一个人除灭；那人虽然因自己的罪孽被除灭，我却要因他的死追究守望的人。’

7 “人子啊！我立了你作以色列家守望的人，所以你要聆听我口中的话，替我警告他们。 8 如果我对恶人说：‘恶人啊，你必定死亡！’你以西结却不出声警告恶人离开他所行的，这恶人就必因自己的罪孽死亡，我却要因他的死追究你。 9 如果你警告恶人，叫他离开他所行的，他仍不转离，他就必因自己的罪孽死亡，你却救了自己的性命。

人的善恶各自负责

10 “人子啊！你要对以色列家说：‘你们这样说：我们的过犯和罪恶常在我们身上；我们必因此衰弱而死，怎能存活呢？’ 11 你要对他们说：‘主耶和华这样宣告：我指着我的永生起誓，我绝不喜悦恶人死亡，却喜悦恶人离开他所行的，得以存活。以色列家啊，回转吧！离开你们所行的，何必死亡呢？’ 12 人子啊！你要对你本国的人说：‘义人的义在他犯罪的日子，不能救他；恶人的恶在他离开恶行的日子，也不会绊倒他；义人在他犯罪的日子，也不能因他的义存活。’ 13 我虽然对义人说他必定生存，但是他若恃着自己的义而行恶，他的一切义都必不被记念；他必因所行的恶死亡。 14 我虽然对恶人说：‘你必定死亡’，但是他若离开他的罪，行公平和正直的事， 15 把抵押归还，把抢夺人的物件偿还，遵行赐生命的律例，不作恶事，他就必存活，不致死亡； 16 他所犯的一切罪，必不被记念；他行了公平和正直的事，就必存活。

17 “你本国的人还说：‘主所行的不公平。’其实他们所行的才是不公平。 18 义人若离开他的义，去行恶事，他就必因此死亡； 19 恶人若离开他的恶，去行公平和正直的事，他就必因此存活。 20 你们还说：‘主所行的不公平。’以色列家啊！我必照着你们各人所行的审判你们。”

耶路撒冷失陷的消息

21 在我们被掳以后的第十二年十月初五日，有人从耶路撒冷逃到我这里来，说：“城已经被攻陷了。” 22 那人来到的前一天晚上，耶和华的手按在我身上，开了我的口。到了早晨，那人来到我这里，我的口已经开了，不再作哑巴。

23 耶和华的话临到我说： 24 “人子啊！那些住在以色列地废墟里的人常说：‘亚伯拉罕一个人就得了这地为业；我们人数众多，这地更应该给我们为业。’ 25 因此，你要对他们说：‘主耶和华这样说：你们吃带血的祭肉，举目仰望你们的偶像，并且流人的血，你们还可以得这地为业吗？ 26 你们倚仗自己的刀剑，行可憎恶的事，人人玷污邻舍的妻子，你们还可以得这地为业吗？’ 27 你要对他们这样说：‘主耶和华这样说：我指着我的永生起誓，那些在废墟里的，必倒在刀下；在田间的，我必交给野兽吞吃；在堡垒和山洞里的，必因瘟疫而死。 28 我必使这地非常荒凉，它因势力而有的骄傲必止息；以色列的山都必荒凉，无人经过。 29 我必因他们所行一切可憎恶的事，使这地非常荒凉，那时他们就知道我是耶和华。’

先知传讲信息的结果

30 “人子啊！你本国的人在城墙旁边和各家的门口正在谈论你；弟兄对弟兄彼此说：‘来吧！听听有甚么话从耶和华那里出来。’ 31 他们成群来到你那里，坐在你面前，像是我的子民一样。其实他们听了你的话，却不去行；他们只是用口表示爱慕，他们的心却是追随不义之财。 32 在他们眼中，你不过是首情歌，唱得美妙，弹得悦耳，他们听了你的话，却不去行。 33 看哪！这事必定应验，到那时候，他们就知道在他们中间有先知了。”

The Watchman’s Duty

33 Now the word of the Lord came to me, saying, 2 “Son of man, speak to the (A)sons of your people and say to them, ‘If I bring a sword upon a land, and the people of the land take one man from among them and make him their watchman, 3 and he sees the sword coming upon the land and (B)blows the [a]horn and warns the people, 4 then [b]someone who hears the sound of the horn but (C)does not take warning, and a sword comes and takes him away, his (D)blood will be on his own head. 5 He heard the sound of the horn but did not take warning; his blood will be on himself. But had he taken warning, he would have (E)saved his life. 6 But if the watchman sees the sword coming and does not blow the horn and the people are not warned, and a sword comes and takes a person from them, he is (F)taken away for his wrongdoing; but I will [c]require his (G)blood from the watchman’s hand.’

7 “Now as for you, son of man, I have [d](H)appointed you as a watchman for the house of Israel; so you will hear a [e]message from My mouth and give them a (I)warning from Me. 8 When I say to the wicked, ‘You wicked person, you will (J)certainly die,’ and you do not speak to warn the wicked about his way, that wicked person shall die for his wrongdoing, but I will [f]require his blood from your hand. 9 But if you on your part warn a wicked person to turn from his way and he (K)does not turn from his way, he will die for his wrongdoing, but you have (L)saved your life.

10 “Now as for you, son of man, say to the house of Israel, ‘This is what you have [g]said: “Surely our offenses and our sins are upon us, and we are (M)rotting away in them; (N)how then can we [h]survive?”’ 11 Say to them, ‘(O)As I live!’ declares the Lord [i]God, ‘I take (P)no pleasure at all in the death of the wicked, but rather that the wicked (Q)turn from his way and live. (R)Turn back, turn back from your evil ways! Why then should you die, house of Israel?’ 12 And you, son of man, say to [j]your fellow citizens, ‘The (S)righteousness of a righteous one will not save him on the day of his offense, and as for the wickedness of a wicked one, he will (T)not stumble because of it on the day when he turns from his wickedness; whereas a righteous one will not be able to live [k]by his righteousness on the day when he commits sin.’ 13 When I say to the righteous that he will certainly live, and he so trusts in his righteousness that he (U)commits injustice, none of his righteous deeds will be remembered; but for that same injustice of his which he has committed he will die. 14 But when I say to the wicked, ‘You will certainly die,’ and he (V)turns from his sin and practices (W)justice and righteousness, 15 if a wicked person returns a pledge, (X)pays back what he has taken by robbery, walks by the (Y)statutes [l]which ensure life without committing injustice, he shall certainly live; he shall not die. 16 (Z)None of his sins that he has committed will be remembered against him. He has practiced justice and righteousness; he shall certainly live.

17 “Yet [m]your fellow citizens say, ‘The way of the Lord is not right,’ when it is their own way that is not right. 18 When the righteous turns from his righteousness and (AA)commits injustice, then he shall die in [n]it. 19 But when the wicked turns from his wickedness and practices justice and righteousness, he will live by them. 20 Yet you say, ‘(AB)The way of the Lord is not right.’ I will judge each of you according to his ways, house of Israel.”

Word of Jerusalem’s Capture

21 Now (AC)in the (AD)twelfth year of our exile, on the fifth of the tenth month, the survivor from Jerusalem came to me, saying, “(AE)The city has been [o]taken.” 22 Now the (AF)hand of the Lord had been upon me in the evening, before the survivors came. And He (AG)opened my mouth [p]at the time they came to me in the morning; so my mouth was (AH)opened and I was no longer [q]speechless.

23 Then the word of the Lord came to me, saying, 24 “Son of man, they who (AI)live in these ruins in the land of Israel are saying, ‘(AJ)Abraham was only one, yet he possessed the land; so to (AK)us who are many the land has been given as a possession.’ 25 Therefore say to them, ‘This is what the Lord God says: “You eat meat with the (AL)blood in it, raise your eyes to your idols as you shed blood. (AM)Should you then possess the land? 26 You [r](AN)rely on your sword, you commit abominations, and each of you defiles his neighbor’s wife. Should you then possess the land?”’ 27 You shall say this to them: ‘This is what the Lord God says: “As I live, those who are in the places of ruins certainly will (AO)fall by the sword, and whoever is in the [s]open field I will give to the animals to be devoured, and those who are in the strongholds and in the (AP)caves will die of plague. 28 And I will (AQ)make the land a desolation and a waste, and the (AR)pride of her power will be brought to an end; and the mountains of Israel will be deserted so that no one will pass through. 29 Then they will know that I am the Lord, when I make the land a desolation and a waste because of all their abominations which they have committed.”’

30 “But as for you, son of man, [t]your fellow citizens who talk with one another about you by the walls and in the doorways of the houses, speak one with another, each with his brother, saying, ‘(AS)Come now and hear what the [u]message is that comes from the Lord.’ 31 And they come to you as people come, and sit before you as My people and hear your words, but they do not do them; for they do the lustful desires expressed by their (AT)mouth, and their heart follows their unlawful (AU)gain. 32 And behold, you are to them like a love song by one who has a (AV)beautiful voice and plays well on an instrument; for they hear your words but they do not practice them. 33 So when it (AW)comes—[v]as it certainly will—then they will know that a prophet has been among them.”

Renewal of Ezekiel’s Call as Watchman

33 The word of the Lord came to me: 2 “Son of man, speak to your people and say to them: ‘When I bring the sword(A) against a land, and the people of the land choose one of their men and make him their watchman,(B) 3 and he sees the sword coming against the land and blows the trumpet(C) to warn the people, 4 then if anyone hears the trumpet but does not heed the warning(D) and the sword comes and takes their life, their blood will be on their own head.(E) 5 Since they heard the sound of the trumpet but did not heed the warning, their blood will be on their own head.(F) If they had heeded the warning, they would have saved themselves.(G) 6 But if the watchman sees the sword coming and does not blow the trumpet to warn the people and the sword comes and takes someone’s life, that person’s life will be taken because of their sin, but I will hold the watchman accountable for their blood.’(H)

7 “Son of man, I have made you a watchman(I) for the people of Israel; so hear the word I speak and give them warning from me.(J) 8 When I say to the wicked, ‘You wicked person, you will surely die,(K)’ and you do not speak out to dissuade them from their ways, that wicked person will die for[a] their sin, and I will hold you accountable for their blood.(L) 9 But if you do warn the wicked person to turn from their ways and they do not do so,(M) they will die for their sin, though you yourself will be saved.(N)

10 “Son of man, say to the Israelites, ‘This is what you are saying: “Our offenses and sins weigh us down, and we are wasting away(O) because of[b] them. How then can we live?(P)”’ 11 Say to them, ‘As surely as I live, declares the Sovereign Lord, I take no pleasure in the death of the wicked, but rather that they turn from their ways and live.(Q) Turn!(R) Turn from your evil ways! Why will you die, people of Israel?’(S)

12 “Therefore, son of man, say to your people,(T) ‘If someone who is righteous disobeys, that person’s former righteousness will count for nothing. And if someone who is wicked repents, that person’s former wickedness will not bring condemnation. The righteous person who sins will not be allowed to live even though they were formerly righteous.’(U) 13 If I tell a righteous person that they will surely live, but then they trust in their righteousness and do evil, none of the righteous things that person has done will be remembered; they will die for the evil they have done.(V) 14 And if I say to a wicked person, ‘You will surely die,’ but they then turn away from their sin and do what is just(W) and right— 15 if they give back what they took in pledge(X) for a loan, return what they have stolen,(Y) follow the decrees that give life, and do no evil—that person will surely live; they will not die.(Z) 16 None of the sins(AA) that person has committed will be remembered against them. They have done what is just and right; they will surely live.(AB)

17 “Yet your people say, ‘The way of the Lord is not just.’ But it is their way that is not just. 18 If a righteous person turns from their righteousness and does evil,(AC) they will die for it.(AD) 19 And if a wicked person turns away from their wickedness and does what is just and right, they will live by doing so.(AE) 20 Yet you Israelites say, ‘The way of the Lord is not just.’ But I will judge each of you according to your own ways.”(AF)

Jerusalem’s Fall Explained

21 In the twelfth year of our exile, in the tenth month on the fifth day, a man who had escaped(AG) from Jerusalem came to me and said, “The city has fallen!(AH)” 22 Now the evening before the man arrived, the hand of the Lord was on me,(AI) and he opened my mouth(AJ) before the man came to me in the morning. So my mouth was opened and I was no longer silent.(AK)

23 Then the word of the Lord came to me: 24 “Son of man, the people living in those ruins(AL) in the land of Israel are saying, ‘Abraham was only one man, yet he possessed the land. But we are many;(AM) surely the land has been given to us as our possession.’(AN) 25 Therefore say to them, ‘This is what the Sovereign Lord says: Since you eat(AO) meat with the blood(AP) still in it and look to your idols and shed blood, should you then possess the land?(AQ) 26 You rely on your sword, you do detestable things,(AR) and each of you defiles his neighbor’s wife.(AS) Should you then possess the land?’

27 “Say this to them: ‘This is what the Sovereign Lord says: As surely as I live, those who are left in the ruins will fall by the sword, those out in the country I will give to the wild animals to be devoured, and those in strongholds and caves will die of a plague.(AT) 28 I will make the land a desolate waste, and her proud strength will come to an end, and the mountains(AU) of Israel will become desolate so that no one will cross them.(AV) 29 Then they will know that I am the Lord, when I have made the land a desolate(AW) waste because of all the detestable things they have done.’(AX)

30 “As for you, son of man, your people are talking together about you by the walls and at the doors of the houses, saying to each other, ‘Come and hear the message that has come from the Lord.’ 31 My people come to you, as they usually do, and sit before(AY) you to hear your words, but they do not put them into practice. Their mouths speak of love, but their hearts are greedy(AZ) for unjust gain.(BA) 32 Indeed, to them you are nothing more than one who sings love songs(BB) with a beautiful voice and plays an instrument well, for they hear your words but do not put them into practice.(BC)

33 “When all this comes true—and it surely will—then they will know that a prophet has been among them.(BD)”
