A parábola das duas águias
17 Recebi esta mensagem do Senhor: 2 “Filho do homem, apresente esta parábola e conte esta história ao povo de Israel. 3 Transmita-lhes a seguinte mensagem do Senhor Soberano:
“Uma grande águia, com asas grandes e penas longas,
coberta com plumagem de várias cores,
veio ao Líbano.
Agarrou a ponta de um cedro
4 e arrancou seu galho mais alto.
Levou-o para uma terra de comerciantes
e plantou-o numa cidade de mercadores.
5 Também levou da terra uma semente
e a plantou em solo fértil.
Colocou-a junto a um rio largo,
onde pudesse crescer como um salgueiro.
6 A planta criou raízes, cresceu
e se tornou uma videira baixa, mas espalhada.
Os ramos se voltaram para a águia,
e as raízes se aprofundaram no solo.
Produziu ramos fortes
e deu brotos.
7 Então, surgiu outra águia,
com asas grandes e muita plumagem.
A videira lançou raízes e ramos
na direção dela, em busca de água,
8 embora já estivesse plantada em boa terra
e tivesse água com fartura,
para que crescesse e se transformasse numa bela videira
e produzisse ramos e frutos.
9 “Agora, portanto, assim diz o Senhor Soberano:
Acaso essa videira prosperará?
Não! Eu a arrancarei pela raiz!
Cortarei seus frutos
e deixarei que suas folhas murchem.
Eu a arrancarei facilmente;
não será necessário um braço forte nem um grande exército.
10 Mas, quando a videira for replantada,
acaso florescerá?
Pelo contrário, murchará
quando o vento do leste soprar contra ela.
Morrerá na mesma terra
onde havia crescido”.
Explicação da parábola
11 Então recebi esta mensagem do Senhor: 12 “Diga a este povo rebelde: Vocês não entendem o que significa essa parábola? O rei da Babilônia veio a Jerusalém e levou seu rei e seus príncipes para a Babilônia. 13 Firmou um tratado com um membro da família real e o obrigou a jurar lealdade. Também exilou os líderes mais influentes de Israel, 14 para que o reino não voltasse a se fortalecer nem se rebelasse. Ele só sobreviveria se cumprisse seu tratado com a Babilônia.
15 “Contudo, esse homem da família real de Israel se rebelou contra a Babilônia e enviou embaixadores ao Egito, para pedir um grande exército e muitos cavalos. Acaso Israel pode deixar de cumprir os tratados que fez sob juramento e ficar impune? 16 Tão certo como eu vivo, diz o Senhor Soberano, o rei de Israel morrerá na Babilônia, a terra do rei que o colocou no poder e cujo tratado ele desprezou e quebrou. 17 O faraó e todo o seu exército poderoso não serão capazes de ajudar Israel quando o rei da Babilônia cercar Jerusalém novamente e destruir muitas vidas. 18 Pois o rei de Israel desprezou seu tratado e o quebrou depois de jurar obediência; portanto, ele não escapará.
19 “Por isso, assim diz o Senhor Soberano: Tão certo como eu vivo, eu o castigarei por quebrar minha aliança e desprezar o voto solene que fez em meu nome. 20 Lançarei minha rede sobre ele e o pegarei em meu laço. Eu o levarei à Babilônia e o julgarei por sua traição contra mim. 21 Todos os seus melhores guerreiros[a] serão mortos na batalha, e os que sobreviverem serão espalhados aos quatro ventos. Então você saberá que eu, o Senhor, falei.
22 “Assim diz o Senhor Soberano: Pegarei um ramo da ponta de um cedro alto e o plantarei no topo do monte mais elevado de Israel. 23 Ele se tornará um cedro majestoso que estenderá seus ramos e produzirá sementes. Aves de toda espécie farão ninhos ali e encontrarão abrigo à sombra de seus ramos. 24 E todas as árvores saberão que eu, o Senhor, derrubo a árvore alta e faço crescer a árvore baixa. Faço a árvore verde murchar e dou vida à árvore seca. Eu, o Senhor, falei e cumprirei o que prometi!”.

17 And the word of the Lord came unto me, saying,
2 Son of man, put forth a riddle, and speak a parable unto the house of Israel;
3 And say, Thus saith the Lord God; A great eagle with great wings, longwinged, full of feathers, which had divers colours, came unto Lebanon, and took the highest branch of the cedar:
4 He cropped off the top of his young twigs, and carried it into a land of traffick; he set it in a city of merchants.
5 He took also of the seed of the land, and planted it in a fruitful field; he placed it by great waters, and set it as a willow tree.
6 And it grew, and became a spreading vine of low stature, whose branches turned toward him, and the roots thereof were under him: so it became a vine, and brought forth branches, and shot forth sprigs.
7 There was also another great eagle with great wings and many feathers: and, behold, this vine did bend her roots toward him, and shot forth her branches toward him, that he might water it by the furrows of her plantation.
8 It was planted in a good soil by great waters, that it might bring forth branches, and that it might bear fruit, that it might be a goodly vine.
9 Say thou, Thus saith the Lord God; Shall it prosper? shall he not pull up the roots thereof, and cut off the fruit thereof, that it wither? it shall wither in all the leaves of her spring, even without great power or many people to pluck it up by the roots thereof.
10 Yea, behold, being planted, shall it prosper? shall it not utterly wither, when the east wind toucheth it? it shall wither in the furrows where it grew.
11 Moreover the word of the Lord came unto me, saying,
12 Say now to the rebellious house, Know ye not what these things mean? tell them, Behold, the king of Babylon is come to Jerusalem, and hath taken the king thereof, and the princes thereof, and led them with him to Babylon;
13 And hath taken of the king's seed, and made a covenant with him, and hath taken an oath of him: he hath also taken the mighty of the land:
14 That the kingdom might be base, that it might not lift itself up, but that by keeping of his covenant it might stand.
15 But he rebelled against him in sending his ambassadors into Egypt, that they might give him horses and much people. Shall he prosper? shall he escape that doeth such things? or shall he break the covenant, and be delivered?
16 As I live, saith the Lord God, surely in the place where the king dwelleth that made him king, whose oath he despised, and whose covenant he brake, even with him in the midst of Babylon he shall die.
17 Neither shall Pharaoh with his mighty army and great company make for him in the war, by casting up mounts, and building forts, to cut off many persons:
18 Seeing he despised the oath by breaking the covenant, when, lo, he had given his hand, and hath done all these things, he shall not escape.
19 Therefore thus saith the Lord God; As I live, surely mine oath that he hath despised, and my covenant that he hath broken, even it will I recompense upon his own head.
20 And I will spread my net upon him, and he shall be taken in my snare, and I will bring him to Babylon, and will plead with him there for his trespass that he hath trespassed against me.
21 And all his fugitives with all his bands shall fall by the sword, and they that remain shall be scattered toward all winds: and ye shall know that I the Lord have spoken it.
22 Thus saith the Lord God; I will also take of the highest branch of the high cedar, and will set it; I will crop off from the top of his young twigs a tender one, and will plant it upon an high mountain and eminent:
23 In the mountain of the height of Israel will I plant it: and it shall bring forth boughs, and bear fruit, and be a goodly cedar: and under it shall dwell all fowl of every wing; in the shadow of the branches thereof shall they dwell.
24 And all the trees of the field shall know that I the Lord have brought down the high tree, have exalted the low tree, have dried up the green tree, and have made the dry tree to flourish: I the Lord have spoken and have done it.

Le grand aigle et la vigne
17 L’Eternel m’adressa la parole et me dit :
2 Fils d’homme, propose une énigme, raconte une parabole à la communauté d’Israël. 3 Dis-leur : « Voici ce que déclare le Seigneur, l’Eternel :
Le grand aigle survint.
Ses ailes étaient grandes,
son envergure était très large,
il était couvert d’un plumage
épais,
multicolore.
L’aigle se rendit au Liban
et saisit la cime d’un cèdre[a],
4 puis arracha ╵son rameau[b] le plus élevé.
Il l’emporta ╵dans un pays de commerçants,
et il le déposa ╵dans une ville de marchands.
5 Puis il prit un plant[c] du pays
et le planta dans une pépinière.
Il le mit comme un saule
près des eaux abondantes.
6 Le plant poussa
et il devint un cep de vigne
étendant ses sarments, ╵mais il était de taille bien modeste ;
ses sarments se tournaient vers l’aigle
et ses racines ╵restaient sous lui.
Il se développa,
produisit des rameaux
et poussa des sarments.
7 Puis survint un autre grand aigle[d]
aux larges ailes,
au plumage abondant.
Et voici que la vigne,
du champ où elle était plantée,
étendit vers lui ses racines
et tendit ses sarments de son côté,
pour se faire arroser par lui.
8 Or elle avait été plantée
dans un bon champ,
près des eaux abondantes
où elle poussait des rameaux
et produisait du fruit
et où elle était devenue ╵une superbe vigne.
9 Dis-leur : “Voici ce que déclare
le Seigneur, l’Eternel.
Va-t-elle prospérer ?
Le premier aigle
ne va-t-il pas
arracher ses racines,
et la dépouiller de ses fruits
pour les laisser sécher ?
Alors toutes les jeunes pousses
se flétriront.
Il ne faudra ni grands efforts
ni une armée nombreuse
pour la déraciner complètement.
10 Voici : elle était bien plantée,
mais pourra-t-elle prospérer ?
Dès que le vent d’orient
se mettra à souffler sur elle,
ne se desséchera-t-elle pas pleinement ?
Oui, sur le terrain même
où elle avait poussé,
elle desséchera.” »
Le sens de la parabole
11 Alors l’Eternel m’adressa la parole et me dit :
12 Demande, je te prie, à cette communauté rebelle si elle comprend ce que tout cela signifie. Dis-lui : « Le roi de Babylone est allé à Jérusalem, il a capturé son roi et les chefs de la ville, et les a emmenés chez lui à Babylone[e]. 13 Il a pris un rejeton de la race royale, il a conclu une alliance avec lui en lui faisant prêter serment. Il a emmené les notables du pays, 14 pour que le royaume demeure dans l’abaissement, incapable de se relever, et qu’il reste fidèle à son alliance pour subsister. 15 Mais celui-ci s’est révolté contre le roi de Babylone, il a envoyé des messagers en Egypte pour qu’elle lui procure des chevaux et un grand nombre de soldats. Réussira-t-il ? Celui qui agit de la sorte s’en sortira-t-il ? Il a rompu l’alliance, et il s’en tirerait ? 16 Aussi vrai que je suis vivant, le Seigneur, l’Eternel, le déclare, il mourra dans la ville du roi qui l’a appelé à régner, car il a violé son serment et il a rompu l’alliance conclue avec lui. Il mourra au milieu de Babylone. 17 Malgré sa forte armée et la multitude de ses troupes, le pharaon ne pourra rien pour lui au moment du combat, quand les Babyloniens élèveront des terrasses de siège et construiront des terrassements pour faire périr beaucoup de gens. 18 Il n’a pas respecté le serment, il a violé l’alliance, et pourtant, il avait bien pris un engagement. Après avoir agi ainsi, il n’en réchappera pas.
19 C’est pourquoi, voici ce que déclare le Seigneur, l’Eternel : Aussi vrai que je suis vivant, parce qu’il a méprisé le serment prêté en mon nom et qu’il a violé mon alliance, je le lui ferai payer. 20 Je vais étendre mon filet sur lui et il sera pris dans mes mailles. Je le ferai emmener à Babylone, et là, je le ferai passer en jugement pour la trahison dont il s’est rendu coupable à mon égard. 21 Ses troupes en fuite tomberont sous l’épée, et ceux qui en réchapperont seront dispersés à tout vent. Ainsi vous reconnaîtrez que moi, l’Eternel, j’ai parlé.
22 Voici ce que déclare le Seigneur, l’Eternel : Je prendrai moi-même un rameau tendre de la cime du cèdre élevé et je le mettrai en terre. Je couperai un tendre rejeton du haut de ses branches et je le planterai moi-même sur une très haute montagne[f]. 23 Je le planterai sur une montagne élevée d’Israël ; il étendra ses branches et portera du fruit, et il deviendra un cèdre magnifique ; toutes sortes d’oiseaux habiteront dans sa ramure et viendront nicher à l’ombre de ses branches[g].
24 Alors tous les arbres de la campagne reconnaîtront que moi, je suis l’Eternel, qui abaisse l’arbre élevé et qui élève celui qui était abaissé, qui fais sécher l’arbre vert et reverdir l’arbre sec. Moi, l’Eternel, je le déclare et je le ferai. »
