La chute d’une puissance
27 L’Eternel m’adressa la parole en ces termes : 2 Fils d’homme, entonne une complainte sur la cité de Tyr. 3 Dis donc à Tyr qui est assise aux portes de la mer et qui commerce avec tant de peuplades de nombreuses îles et régions côtières : voici ce que déclare le Seigneur, l’Eternel :
Toi, ô Tyr, tu as dit :
« Ma beauté est parfaite ! »
4 Ton territoire ╵se trouve au cœur des mers,
et ceux qui t’ont construite ╵ont rendu ta beauté parfaite.
5 Ils ont bâti tous tes bordages
en cyprès de Senir[a],
ils t’ont donné pour mât ╵un cèdre du Liban.
6 Ils ont pris pour tes rames ╵des chênes du Basan,
ton pont est en ivoire
incrusté dans du bois, ╵dans du cyprès ╵importé des îles de Chypre.
7 Du lin brodé d’Egypte ╵te servait de voilure :
c’était ton pavillon.
Tu avais pour tentures
la pourpre et l’écarlate ╵des îles d’Elisha[b].
8 Les habitants d’Arvad ╵et de Sidon[c]
te servaient de rameurs,
et les plus habiles chez toi, ô Tyr
étaient tes matelots.
9 Tu employais chez toi ╵les artisans ╵expérimentés de Byblos[d],
pour effectuer tes réparations.
Tous les bateaux des mers ╵avec leurs matelots ╵se rencontraient chez toi
pour négocier tes marchandises.
10 Les Perses et ceux de Loud ╵comme de Pouth[e]
entraient dans ton armée.
C’étaient tes gens de guerre.
Ils suspendaient chez toi ╵leurs boucliers, leurs casques,
et assuraient ta gloire.
11 Les gens d’Arvad et leur armée
étaient sur tes murailles
tout autour de la ville,
les hommes de Gammad[f] ╵étaient dans tes donjons.
Ils suspendaient leurs armes ╵aux murs d’enceinte
et rendaient ta beauté parfaite.
Une commerçante prestigieuse
12 Tarsis[g] échangeait avec toi des biens de toutes sortes en abondance ; elle te donnait de l’argent, du fer, de l’étain et du plomb contre tes marchandises. 13 Yavân, Toubal, Méshek[h] commerçaient avec toi, ils donnaient des esclaves et des objets de bronze en échange de tes marchandises. 14 Ceux de Beth-Togarma[i] pourvoyaient tes marchés de chevaux pour la guerre et de chevaux de trait ainsi que de mulets. 15 Les gens de Dedân[j] commerçaient avec toi, tes marchés s’étendaient jusqu’aux nombreuses îles et régions côtières qui te payaient ton dû en défenses d’ivoire et avec de l’ébène. 16 La Syrie[k] t’achetait des produits de tous genres, te payant en retour en pierres d’escarboucle, en tissus écarlates, en belles broderies, en tissus de fin lin, en corail et rubis. 17 Juda et Israël commerçaient avec toi, te donnant en échange du froment de Minnith[l], du biscuit et du miel, de l’huile et du baume. 18 La ville de Damas commerçait avec toi, elle était attirée par tes nombreux produits, et tes biens abondants, te livrant en paiement le vin de Helbôn[m] et la laine de Tsahar. 19 Vedân, Yavân et Meouzal[n] pourvoyaient tes marchés, en fer forgé, en casse et en roseau aromatique contre tes marchandises. 20 Dedân te fournissait des étoffes de selle. 21 Les peuplades arabes et tous les princes de Qédar[o] négociaient avec toi, pourvoyant ton marché d’agneaux, de béliers et de boucs. 22 Les marchands de Saba et ceux de Raema[p] commerçaient avec toi payant tes marchandises des meilleurs aromates, de gemmes de tous genres et d’or. 23 Harân, Kanné, Eden, les marchands de Saba, d’Assur et de Kilmad[q] commerçaient avec toi. 24 Ils faisaient le commerce d’objets de luxe, de manteaux teints de pourpre et finement brodés, de tissus[r] de couleur, de forts cordons tressés pour tes négoces.
Une chute retentissante
25 Les vaisseaux au long cours[s] ╵assuraient le transport ╵de tes produits.
Oui, tu étais remplie ╵et lourdement chargée ╵de marchandises
au cœur des mers[t].
26 Mais sur les grandes eaux ╵où t’avaient amenée ╵ceux qui maniaient tes rames,
tu as été brisée ╵par le vent de l’orient ╵au cœur des mers[u]
27 et tes richesses, ╵tes marchandises, ╵les articles de ton commerce,
tes marins et tes matelots,
les ouvriers ╵qui réparent tes avaries,
et tes marchands,
tous les hommes de guerre ╵qui sont chez toi,
toute la multitude ╵qui remplit ton navire,
tous tomberont ╵au cœur des mers
au jour de ton naufrage.
28 Au cri que pousseront ╵tes matelots,
les régions de la côte ╵se mettront à trembler.
29 Alors tous les rameurs,
les matelots, tous les marins ╵qui sillonnent la mer ╵quitteront leurs navires
et se tiendront sur terre,
30 ils se lamenteront sur toi
et pousseront des cris amers ;
ils répandront ╵de la poussière sur leur tête,
et se rouleront dans la cendre.
31 Ils se raseront la tête à cause de toi,
ils mettront un habit ╵fait de toile de sac,
plongés dans l’affliction ╵ils pleureront sur toi
et avec amertume, ╵ils se lamenteront.
32 Dans leur douleur, ╵ils chanteront sur toi ╵une élégie funèbre.
Voici ce qu’ils diront ╵dans leur complainte :
« Qui était comme Tyr,
désormais silencieuse[v] ╵au milieu de la mer ? »
33 Lorsque tes marchandises ╵arrivaient par les mers,
tu comblais les besoins ╵de peuples innombrables.
Par la surabondance ╵de tes produits
et de tes marchandises, ╵tu enrichissais les rois de la terre.
34 Mais te voilà brisée ╵par les flots de la mer,
jetée au fond des eaux profondes !
Toute ta cargaison ╵et tout ton équipage
ont sombré avec toi.
35 Les habitants des îles ╵sont frappés de stupeur
à cause de ton sort,
leurs rois sont secoués ╵d’un frisson d’épouvante
et la consternation ╵se lit sur leurs visages.
36 Ceux qui commercent ╵parmi les peuples ╵sifflent d’horreur ╵à ton sujet,
ton sort inspire l’épouvante,
et pour toujours, ╵toi, tu ne seras plus !

27 The word of the Lord came to me: 2 “Son of man, take up a lament(A) concerning Tyre. 3 Say to Tyre,(B) situated at the gateway to the sea,(C) merchant of peoples on many coasts, ‘This is what the Sovereign Lord says:
“‘You say, Tyre,
“I am perfect in beauty.(D)”
4 Your domain was on the high seas;
your builders brought your beauty to perfection.(E)
5 They made all your timbers
of juniper from Senir[a];(F)
they took a cedar from Lebanon(G)
to make a mast for you.
6 Of oaks(H) from Bashan
they made your oars;
of cypress wood[b] from the coasts of Cyprus(I)
they made your deck, adorned with ivory.
7 Fine embroidered linen(J) from Egypt was your sail
and served as your banner;
your awnings were of blue and purple(K)
from the coasts of Elishah.(L)
8 Men of Sidon and Arvad(M) were your oarsmen;
your skilled men, Tyre, were aboard as your sailors.(N)
9 Veteran craftsmen of Byblos(O) were on board
as shipwrights to caulk your seams.
All the ships of the sea(P) and their sailors
came alongside to trade for your wares.
10 “‘Men of Persia,(Q) Lydia(R) and Put(S)
served as soldiers in your army.
They hung their shields(T) and helmets on your walls,
bringing you splendor.
11 Men of Arvad and Helek
guarded your walls on every side;
men of Gammad
were in your towers.
They hung their shields around your walls;
they brought your beauty to perfection.(U)
12 “‘Tarshish(V) did business with you because of your great wealth of goods;(W) they exchanged silver, iron, tin and lead for your merchandise.
13 “‘Greece,(X) Tubal and Meshek(Y) did business with you; they traded human beings(Z) and articles of bronze for your wares.
14 “‘Men of Beth Togarmah(AA) exchanged chariot horses, cavalry horses and mules for your merchandise.
15 “‘The men of Rhodes[c](AB) traded with you, and many coastlands(AC) were your customers; they paid you with ivory(AD) tusks and ebony.
16 “‘Aram[d](AE) did business with you because of your many products; they exchanged turquoise,(AF) purple fabric, embroidered work, fine linen,(AG) coral(AH) and rubies for your merchandise.
17 “‘Judah and Israel traded with you; they exchanged wheat(AI) from Minnith(AJ) and confections,[e] honey, olive oil and balm(AK) for your wares.(AL)
18 “‘Damascus(AM) did business with you because of your many products and great wealth of goods.(AN) They offered wine from Helbon, wool from Zahar 19 and casks of wine from Izal(AO) in exchange for your wares: wrought iron, cassia(AP) and calamus.
20 “‘Dedan(AQ) traded in saddle blankets with you.
21 “‘Arabia(AR) and all the princes of Kedar(AS) were your customers; they did business with you in lambs, rams and goats.
22 “‘The merchants of Sheba(AT) and Raamah traded with you; for your merchandise they exchanged the finest of all kinds of spices(AU) and precious stones, and gold.(AV)
23 “‘Harran,(AW) Kanneh and Eden(AX) and merchants of Sheba, Ashur(AY) and Kilmad traded with you. 24 In your marketplace they traded with you beautiful garments, blue fabric, embroidered work and multicolored rugs with cords twisted and tightly knotted.
25 “‘The ships of Tarshish(AZ) serve
as carriers for your wares.
You are filled with heavy cargo
as you sail the sea.(BA)
26 Your oarsmen take you
out to the high seas.
But the east wind(BB) will break you to pieces
far out at sea.
27 Your wealth,(BC) merchandise and wares,
your mariners, sailors and shipwrights,
your merchants and all your soldiers,
and everyone else on board
will sink into the heart of the sea(BD)
on the day of your shipwreck.
28 The shorelands will quake(BE)
when your sailors cry out.
29 All who handle the oars
will abandon their ships;
the mariners and all the sailors
will stand on the shore.
30 They will raise their voice
and cry bitterly over you;
they will sprinkle dust(BF) on their heads
and roll(BG) in ashes.(BH)
31 They will shave their heads(BI) because of you
and will put on sackcloth.
They will weep(BJ) over you with anguish of soul
and with bitter mourning.(BK)
32 As they wail and mourn over you,
they will take up a lament(BL) concerning you:
“Who was ever silenced like Tyre,
surrounded by the sea?(BM)”
33 When your merchandise went out on the seas,(BN)
you satisfied many nations;
with your great wealth(BO) and your wares
you enriched the kings of the earth.
34 Now you are shattered by the sea
in the depths of the waters;
your wares and all your company
have gone down with you.(BP)
35 All who live in the coastlands(BQ)
are appalled(BR) at you;
their kings shudder with horror
and their faces are distorted with fear.(BS)
36 The merchants among the nations scoff at you;(BT)
you have come to a horrible end
and will be no more.(BU)’”

“O Tyre, you have said,
‘I am (E)perfect in beauty.’
4 Your borders are (F)in the heart of the seas;
your builders made perfect your beauty.
5 They made all your planks
of fir trees from (G)Senir;
they took (H)a cedar from Lebanon
to make a mast for you.
6 Of (I)oaks of Bashan
they made your oars;
they made your deck of pines
from (J)the coasts of Cyprus,
inlaid with ivory.
7 (K)Of fine embroidered linen from Egypt
was your sail,
serving as your banner;
blue and purple from (L)the coasts of Elishah
was your awning.

26 “Your rowers have brought you out
into the high seas.
(BG)The east wind has wrecked you
in the heart of the seas.
27 Your riches, your wares, your merchandise,
your mariners and (BH)your pilots,
(BI)your caulkers, your dealers in merchandise,
and all your men of war who are in you,
with all your crew
that is in your midst,
sink into the heart of the seas
(BJ)on the day of your fall.
28 At the sound of the cry of your pilots
(BK)the countryside shakes,
29 and down from their ships
(BL)come all who handle the oar.
The mariners and all the pilots of the sea
stand on the land
30 (BM)and shout aloud over you
and cry out bitterly.
(BN)They cast dust on their heads
(BO)and wallow in ashes;
31 they (BP)make themselves bald for you
and put sackcloth on their waist,
and they weep over you in bitterness of soul,
with bitter mourning.
32 In their wailing they (BQ)raise a lamentation for you
and lament over you:
(BR)‘Who is like Tyre,
like one destroyed in the midst of the sea?
33 When your wares came from the seas,
(BS)you satisfied many peoples;
with your abundant wealth and merchandise
(BT)you enriched the kings of the earth.
34 Now (BU)you are wrecked by the seas,
in the depths of the waters;
your merchandise and all your crew in your midst
have sunk with you.
35 (BV)All the inhabitants of the coastlands
are appalled at you,
and (BW)the hair of their kings bristles with horror;
their faces are convulsed.
36 (BX)The merchants among the peoples (BY)hiss at you;
(BZ)you have come to a dreadful end
and shall be no more forever.’”
