Koning Kores geeft opdracht de tempel van de Heer te herbouwen
1 De Heer zorgde ervoor dat koning Kores van Perzië het volgende bevel liet opschrijven en in zijn hele rijk bekend liet maken. Dat was in het eerste jaar dat hij koning was.[a] (De Heer had al van tevoren door de profeet Jeremia gezegd dat dit zou gebeuren.)[b] 2 "Dit zegt koning Kores van Perzië: de God van de hemel heeft alle koninkrijken van de aarde aan mij gegeven. Hij heeft mij bevolen voor Hem een tempel te bouwen in Jeruzalem in Juda. 3 Iedereen die bij zijn volk hoort, mag naar Jeruzalem in Juda gaan, met de zegen van zijn God. Hij mag gaan bouwen aan de tempel van de Heer, de God van Israël die in Jeruzalem woont. 4 De mensen die niet teruggaan, moeten goud, zilver, allerlei spullen en ook vee meegeven aan de mensen die wel teruggaan om in Jeruzalem de tempel te herbouwen. Een deel van die spullen is voor de mensen zelf. Het andere deel is een geschenk voor de bouw van de tempel van de God die in Jeruzalem woont."
5 Toen maakten de familiehoofden van de stammen van Juda en Benjamin, de priesters en de Levieten zich klaar om terug te gaan. Iedereen die zich door God geroepen voelde om terug te gaan, maakte zich klaar. Ze wilden teruggaan om de tempel te gaan bouwen voor de Heer die in Jeruzalem woont. 6 En de mensen uit hun buurt die niet meegingen, gaven hun van alles mee: voorwerpen van zilver en goud, allerlei spullen, vee en kostbare voorwerpen. Ook gaven ze vrijwillig nog allerlei andere dingen mee.
7 Vroeger had koning Nebukadnezar alle voorwerpen meegenomen uit de tempel van de Heer in Jeruzalem. Hij had alles in Babel laten neerzetten in de tempel van zijn god. Nu liet koning Kores al die voorwerpen weer tevoorschijn halen. 8 Hij liet ze door de schatbewaarder Mitredat uit de tempel ophalen. Mitredat gaf alles aan Sesbazzar, de prins van Juda.[c] Want Sesbazzar had de leiding over de mensen die naar Juda zouden teruggaan. 9 Zo kreeg Sesbazzar de volgende voorwerpen mee: 30 gouden schalen, 1000 zilveren schalen, 29 messen, 10 30 gouden bekers, 410 zilveren bekers en 1000 andere voorwerpen. 11 In totaal kreeg Sesbazzar 5400 gouden en zilveren voorwerpen mee. Toen ging hij met een groot aantal Judeeërs uit Babel terug naar Jeruzalem.

- Ezra 1:1 Kores was toen al 10 jaar koning van Perzië, maar pas sinds één jaar hoorde ook Juda tot zijn rijk. Babel had Juda veroverd, maar Babel werd op zijn beurt veroverd door Perzië. Daardoor hoorde Juda nu ook bij het rijk van Perzië.

Cyrus Helps the Exiles to Return(A)
1 In the first year of Cyrus king of Persia, in order to fulfill the word of the Lord spoken by Jeremiah,(B) the Lord moved the heart(C) of Cyrus king of Persia to make a proclamation throughout his realm and also to put it in writing:
2 “This is what Cyrus king of Persia says:
“‘The Lord, the God of heaven, has given me all the kingdoms of the earth and he has appointed(D) me to build(E) a temple for him at Jerusalem in Judah. 3 Any of his people among you may go up to Jerusalem in Judah and build the temple of the Lord, the God of Israel, the God who is in Jerusalem, and may their God be with them. 4 And in any locality where survivors(F) may now be living, the people are to provide them with silver and gold,(G) with goods and livestock, and with freewill offerings(H) for the temple of God(I) in Jerusalem.’”(J)
5 Then the family heads of Judah and Benjamin,(K) and the priests and Levites—everyone whose heart God had moved(L)—prepared to go up and build the house(M) of the Lord in Jerusalem. 6 All their neighbors assisted them with articles of silver and gold,(N) with goods and livestock, and with valuable gifts, in addition to all the freewill offerings.
7 Moreover, King Cyrus brought out the articles belonging to the temple of the Lord, which Nebuchadnezzar had carried away from Jerusalem and had placed in the temple of his god.[a](O) 8 Cyrus king of Persia had them brought by Mithredath the treasurer, who counted them out to Sheshbazzar(P) the prince of Judah.
9 This was the inventory:

1 Now in the first year of Cyrus king of Persia, that the word of the Lord by the mouth of Jeremiah might be fulfilled, the Lord stirred up the spirit of Cyrus king of Persia, that he made a proclamation throughout all his kingdom, and put it also in writing, saying,
2 Thus saith Cyrus king of Persia, The Lord God of heaven hath given me all the kingdoms of the earth; and he hath charged me to build him an house at Jerusalem, which is in Judah.
3 Who is there among you of all his people? his God be with him, and let him go up to Jerusalem, which is in Judah, and build the house of the Lord God of Israel, (he is the God,) which is in Jerusalem.
4 And whosoever remaineth in any place where he sojourneth, let the men of his place help him with silver, and with gold, and with goods, and with beasts, beside the freewill offering for the house of God that is in Jerusalem.
5 Then rose up the chief of the fathers of Judah and Benjamin, and the priests, and the Levites, with all them whose spirit God had raised, to go up to build the house of the Lord which is in Jerusalem.
6 And all they that were about them strengthened their hands with vessels of silver, with gold, with goods, and with beasts, and with precious things, beside all that was willingly offered.
7 Also Cyrus the king brought forth the vessels of the house of the Lord, which Nebuchadnezzar had brought forth out of Jerusalem, and had put them in the house of his gods;
8 Even those did Cyrus king of Persia bring forth by the hand of Mithredath the treasurer, and numbered them unto Sheshbazzar, the prince of Judah.
9 And this is the number of them: thirty chargers of gold, a thousand chargers of silver, nine and twenty knives,
10 Thirty basons of gold, silver basons of a second sort four hundred and ten, and other vessels a thousand.
11 All the vessels of gold and of silver were five thousand and four hundred. All these did Sheshbazzar bring up with them of the captivity that were brought up from Babylon unto Jerusalem.

Cyrus Lets the Jews Return Home
1 (A) Years ago the Lord sent Jeremiah with a message about a promise[a] for the people of Israel. Then in the first year that Cyrus was king of Persia,[b] the Lord kept his promise by telling Cyrus to send this official message to all parts of his kingdom:
2-3 (B) I am King Cyrus of Persia.
The Lord God of heaven, who is also the God of Israel, has made me the ruler of all nations on earth. And he has chosen me to build a temple for him in Jerusalem, which is in Judah. The Lord God will watch over and encourage any of his people who want to go back to Jerusalem and help build the temple.
4 Everyone else must provide what is needed. They must give money, supplies, and animals, as well as gifts for rebuilding God's temple.
5 Many people felt that the Lord God wanted them to help rebuild his temple, and they made plans to go to Jerusalem. Among them were priests, Levites, and leaders of the tribes of Judah and Benjamin. 6 The others helped by giving silver articles, gold, personal possessions, cattle, and other valuable gifts, as well as offerings for the temple.
7 King Cyrus gave back the things that Nebuchadnezzar[c] had taken from the Lord's temple in Jerusalem and had put in the temple of his own gods. 8 Cyrus placed Mithredath, his chief treasurer, in charge of these things. Mithredath counted them and gave a list to Sheshbazzar, the governor of Judah. 9-10 Included among them were: 30 large gold dishes; 1,000 large silver dishes; 29 other dishes;[d] 30 gold bowls; 410 silver bowls; and 1,000 other articles.
11 Altogether, there were 5,400 gold and silver dishes, bowls, and other articles. Sheshbazzar took them with him when he and the others returned to Jerusalem from Babylonia.

- 1.1 the first year that Cyrus was king of Persia: Probably 539 b.c., when Cyrus captured Babylonia. He had actually ruled Persia since 549 b.c.
- 1.7 Nebuchadnezzar: Known as Nebuchadnezzar II, who ruled Babylonia from 605 to 562 b.c. In 586 b.c. he destroyed Jerusalem and took many of its people to Babylonia.

Cyrus Commands the Jews to Return
1 (A)In the first year that Cyrus of Persia was emperor,[a] the Lord made what he had said through the prophet Jeremiah come true. He prompted Cyrus to issue the following command and send it out in writing to be read aloud everywhere in his empire:
2 (B)“This is the command of Cyrus, Emperor of Persia. The Lord, the God of Heaven, has made me ruler over the whole world and has given me the responsibility of building a temple for him in Jerusalem in Judah. 3 May God be with all of you who are his people. You are to go to Jerusalem and rebuild the Temple of the Lord, the God of Israel, the God who is worshiped in Jerusalem. 4 If any of his people in exile need help to return, their neighbors are to give them this help. They are to provide them with silver and gold, supplies and pack animals, as well as offerings to present in the Temple of God in Jerusalem.”
5 Then the heads of the clans of the tribes of Judah and Benjamin, the priests and Levites, and everyone else whose heart God had moved got ready to go and rebuild the Lord's Temple in Jerusalem. 6 All their neighbors helped them by giving them many things: silver utensils, gold, supplies, pack animals, other valuables, and offerings for the Temple.
7 Emperor Cyrus gave them back the bowls and cups that King Nebuchadnezzar had taken from the Temple in Jerusalem and had put in the temple of his gods. 8 He handed them over to Mithredath, chief of the royal treasury, who made an inventory of them for Sheshbazzar, the governor of Judah, 9-10 as follows:
