サマリアの女性と話すイエス
4 さて、イエスのところにはぞくぞくと人が詰めかけ、人々は次々と洗礼を受けていった。イエスは、パリサイ派の人々が、イエスが洗礼者ヨハネよりも多くの弟子を作り、洗礼を授けているという報告を受けたことを察知した。 2 しかしもっとも、洗礼を授けていたのはイエスではなく、その弟子たちが行っていたのだ。 3 すると、イエスはユダヤ地方から去りガリラヤ地方へと向かった。 4 その道のりにはサマリア地方があった。
5 イエスはサマリア地方のスカルという町に立ち寄った。その町は、ヤコブが息子ヨセフに与えた地の近くにあり、 6 ヤコブの井戸と呼ばれる水汲み場があった。長い道のりを歩き、疲れたイエスは井戸のそばに腰をおろした。さて、正午ごろ・・・ 7 サマリア人の女が水を汲みにそこにやって来た。イエスは言った。「すまん、一杯もらえるかい！」 8 イエスの弟子たちは食糧の買い出しで町に出ていたため、この時イエスは1人きりだった。
9 女性が言った。「あんた、ユダヤ人じゃないか！一杯だって？あたしはサマリアの女だよ！」（当時、ユダヤ人はサマリア人を差別していた）
10 イエスは答えた。「あなたは分かってないな！神があなたのために用意しているものがなんなのかを・・・一杯お願いしている者が誰なのかも分かっていない。もしそれが誰なのかを知っていたら、あなたの方からわたしにお願いしているだろう。そして、わたしがあなたにいのちの水をあげていたというのに・・・」
11 女性が言った。「あの～そもそも汲むものを持っていないようですが？井戸はすごく深いですし、そのいのちの水とやらはどこから汲むんですか？ 12 第一、あなた！あたしたちのご先祖ヤコブ様よりも偉いってのかい！ここはね、ヤコブ様から授かった由緒ある井戸なんだよ。ここからヤコブ様自身が飲んだのさ。彼の息子たちや家畜たちだってみ～んなこの井戸から水を飲んだってのに、これより良い水をくれるっていうのかい？」
13 イエスが答えた。「たとえこの水を飲んでも、またのどは渇く。 14 しかし、わたしがあげる水を飲めば、二度と渇くことはない！枯れない泉が心から湧き上がり、永遠のいのちへとつながる！」
15 女性がイエスに言った。「では、その水を頂けますか？そんな水があったら、のども渇かないし、わざわざ水汲みに来なくてすむでしょうし！」
16 イエスは彼女に言った。「じゃあ、一度帰って夫を連れて来るんだ」
17 女性が答えた。「でも、私には・・・夫はいないわよ」
イエスは彼女に言った。「確かに間違ってはいない。 18 正確には、これまで5人の夫がいたのに今の同棲相手は夫じゃない」
19 女性は言った。「あなたは預言者ですね！ 20 だったら教えてください！わたしたちは代々この山で神を拝んできたのに、あなた方ユダヤ人は、エルサレム以外では神を拝めないと言ってます！」
21 イエスは言った。「わたしを信じなさい！この山かエルサレムかなど関係なく、お父さんを讃える日がやってくる。 22 あなた達サマリア人は、拝んでいる神について知らないことばかりだが、わたしたちユダヤ人は知っている。神がユダヤ人を通してこの世を救うことを。 23 お父さんを心から讃える時はもう来る！いや、今がその時だ。このように讃える者こそが神の求める者だ！ 24 神は霊なのだから、本当に神を讃えるのなら、霊によって讃えなければならない」
25 女性は言った。「救い主が来ることは知ってます！彼が来れば、全ての答えを明らかにしてくれるんですよね」
26 その後、イエスが彼女に言った。「目の前にいるじゃないか。あなたと話している・・・わたしがそうだ！」
27 ちょうどその時、イエスの弟子たちが買い出しから帰ってきた。イエスが女と話をしていたので驚きはしたものの、女に「何がほしいんだ？」と聞いたり、イエスに「彼女となんでお話しを？」と尋ねる者は一人もいなかった。
28 それから彼女は水瓶を置いたまま町へ飛んで行き、自分の身に起こったことを人々に話した。 29 「ねえねえ、来て！あたしの過去を何もかも言い当てた男がいたんだよ！おそらく、あの方こそ救い主に違いないわ！」 30 この誘いに町中の人が乗り、イエスに会おうとぞくぞくと人が押しかけてきた。
31 女が町にいたその間、イエスの弟子たちはイエスに頼み込んでいた。「先生、何か口にしてくださいよ！」
32 だがイエスは答えた。「お前たちも一切知らない飯がわたしにはある」
33 そこで弟子たちはお互いに聞きあった。「ん？俺たちがいない間に誰か飯でも持ってきたのか？」
34 イエスは言った。「わたしの飯とは、わたしを遣わした方の望みを全うするということだ。わたしの飯とは、彼に与えられた任務を全うするということだ。 35 種をまくと、誰もが『収穫は4ヶ月先。夏が終わらなければ始まらない』と言う。目を覚ませ！畑を見渡してみろ！彼らは収穫される時を待っている！ 36 今でも収穫する者は報酬を手にし、永遠のいのちを受ける。だからこそ、蒔く者も刈り取る者と共に喜ぶことができるのだ！ 37 人々は言う。『1人が種をまけば、もう1人が刈り取る』このことばは本当だ。 38 わたしは他の人が苦労をして種を蒔いた畑に、お前たちを送る。そのおかげでお前たちは、他の人が汗水たらして作り上げた実を収穫することができるのだ！」
39 この頃、スカルの町にいた多くのサマリア人がイエスを信じた。例の女からイエスのことを聞いたからだ。「その方はわたしの過去を何もかも言い当てたのよ！」 40 町中のサマリア人はイエスのもとに集まった。それから彼らは、もう少しだけこの町に滞在してほしいとイエスに頼み込んだ。こうしてイエスは2日ほどその町に残った。 41 その間、さらに多くの人がイエスのことばを聞いて、信じるようになった。
42 村人は例の女に言った。「私たちは最初、お前が話してくれたことを聞いてイエスを信じ始めた。でも、イエスの話を直接聞いていま確信したよ！私たちの耳に狂いはない。彼こそがこの世を救う方だ！」
隊長の息子を癒すイエス

43 2日後、イエスはガリラヤ地方へ向かった。 44 イエスは以前、預言者は生まれ故郷では尊敬されないと言ったことがある。 45 ところがどうだ！ガリラヤ地方に足を踏み入れると誰もがイエスを大歓迎した。それもそのはず、彼らは過越祭の時、イエスが神殿の都エルサレムでしたことを見ていたのだ。
46 イエスはガリラヤ地方を旅している間にカナの町を再び訪れた。そう、そこはイエスが水をワインに変えた町だ。ところで、カペナウムの町には王の重役である高官が住んでいた。彼の息子は重い病をかかえていた。 47 高官はイエスの評判を聞きつけ、そのイエスがユダ地方を去ってガリラヤ地方にいるという情報を入手した。そこで、イエスを探しあてると、カペナウムの町に来て、死にそうな息子を治してほしいと願い求めたのだ。 48 イエスは彼に言った。「あなた方は、大きな奇跡やしるしを見ない限りはわたしを信じようとしない」
49 王の高官が言った。「どうか先生っ！私の息子が死ぬ前に、私と一緒に来て下さい！」
50 イエスは答えた。「行きなさい。あなたの息子は生きるよ」
高官はイエスのことばを信じ、家へと急いだ。 51 家に帰る途中、高官の部下たちが駆けつけてきた。「ご主人さまー！坊ちゃまが！坊ちゃまの病気が治りました！」
52 男は尋ねた。「い、いつからよくなり始めたんだ？」
彼らは答えた。「昨日の午後1時頃でしょうか、急に熱が下がりまして・・・」
53 その時、父親は理解した。息子の熱がひいた時間と、イエスが、「あなたの息子は生きるよ」と言った時刻が同時刻であったことを。これをきっかけに、高官と召使いを含んだ一家全員がイエスを信じたのである！
54 これは、イエスがユダ地方からガリラヤ地方にやって来て行った2つ目の奇跡であった。

Jezus en de vrouw uit Samaria
4 De Heer Jezus hoorde dat de Farizeeërs hadden gehoord dat Hij méér leerlingen maakte en doopte dan Johannes. 2 (Hij doopte trouwens niet Zelf, maar Hij liet dat door zijn leerlingen doen.) 3 Daarom vertrok Hij uit Judea en ging weer naar Galilea. 4 Hij moest daarbij door de streek Samaria heen. 5 Hij kwam bij een stad in Samaria die Sichar heette. Die stad ligt dicht bij het stuk grond dat Jakob ooit aan zijn zoon Jozef had gegeven.[a] 6 Daar was ook de bron van Jakob. Jezus was moe van de reis en ging bij de bron zitten. Het was toen ongeveer twaalf uur 's middags.
7 Een Samaritaanse vrouw kwam water halen bij de bron. Jezus zei tegen haar: "Wil je Mij wat te drinken geven?" 8 Want de leerlingen waren naar de stad gegaan om eten te kopen. 9 De vrouw zei tegen Hem: "Hoe kunt U als Jood te drinken vragen aan mij, een Samaritaanse vrouw?" Want Joden willen niet met Samaritanen omgaan.[b] 10 Jezus antwoordde: "Als je wist wat God jou wil geven, en als je wist Wie hier aan jou om drinken vraagt, dan zou jij aan Hém om drinken hebben gevraagd. Dan zou Hij je vers water hebben gegeven."[c] 11 Ze zei tegen hem: "Heer, U heeft geen emmer en het is een diepe put. Hoe kunt U dan aan vers water komen? 12 Bent U soms belangrijker dan onze voorvader Jakob? Hij heeft deze put gegraven. Hij heeft er ook zelf uit gedronken, met zijn zonen en zijn vee." 13 Jezus antwoordde haar: "Mensen die van het water uit deze put drinken, zullen weer dorst krijgen. 14 Maar mensen die hebben gedronken van het water dat Ik hun geef, zullen voor eeuwig geen dorst meer krijgen. Want het water dat Ik hun geef, zal in hen een bron worden waar water uit opborrelt dat eeuwig leven geeft." 15 De vrouw zei: "Heer, geef mij van dat water, zodat ik nooit meer dorst krijg. Dan hoef ik nooit meer water te gaan halen bij de bron hier." 16 Hij zei tegen haar: "Ga naar huis, haal je man en kom met hem weer hier." 17 De vrouw antwoordde: "Ik heb geen man." Jezus zei tegen haar: "Het klopt dat je zegt dat je geen man hebt. 18 Want je hebt vijf mannen gehad, en met de man met wie je nu leeft, ben je niet getrouwd. Je hebt dus de waarheid gezegd."
19 Toen zei de vrouw: "Heer, ik zie dat U een profeet bent. 20 Dan heb ik een vraag. Onze voorouders hebben hier op de berg Gerizim God aanbeden. Maar de Joden zeggen dat je alleen in Jeruzalem mag aanbidden." 21 Jezus zei: "Geloof Mij, vrouw, er komt een dag dat de mensen niet meer hier op de berg of in Jeruzalem de Vader zullen aanbidden. 22 Jullie, de Samaritanen, aanbidden God zonder Hem echt te kennen. Maar wij Joden weten Wie we aanbidden, want wij kennen God. Want de Redder van de mensen komt uit het Joodse volk. 23 Nu is de tijd begonnen dat echte aanbidders de Vader zullen aanbidden met hun geest en vol van waarheid. Want dat is het soort aanbidders waar de Vader naar verlangt. 24 God is een geest. Als je Hem wil aanbidden, moet je Hem aanbidden met je geest en vol van waarheid." 25 De vrouw zei tegen Hem: "Ik weet dat op een dag de Messias komt. (Hij wordt ook wel de Christus genoemd.) Als Hij er eenmaal is, zal Hij ons alles vertellen en uitleggen." 26 Jezus antwoordde: "IK BEN dat,[d] Ik die nu met jou praat."
27 Op dat moment kwamen de leerlingen terug. Ze waren verbaasd dat Hij met een vrouw aan het praten was. Toch zeiden ze er geen van allen iets van. 28 De vrouw liet haar waterkruik staan, ging naar de stad en zei tegen iedereen: 29 "Kom mee. Ik wil jullie iemand laten zien die mij precies wist te vertellen wat ik allemaal heb gedaan. Hij móet wel de Messias zijn." 30 En iedereen kwam de stad uit, naar Hem toe.
31 Intussen zeiden zijn leerlingen tegen Hem: "Meester, eet iets." 32 Maar Hij zei: "Nee, Ik heb al iets te eten waar jullie niets van weten." 33 De leerlingen zeiden tegen elkaar: "Heeft iemand Hem dan al eten gebracht?" 34 Jezus zei: "Het doen van Gods wil is als eten voor Mij. Ik wil doen waarvoor Hij Mij heeft gestuurd. 35 Jullie zeggen toch dat het nog vier maanden duurt voor je kan oogsten? Maar kijk eens om je heen. Dan kunnen jullie zien dat het graan op de velden al rijp is en geoogst kan worden. 36 De maaier krijgt alvast zijn loon en hij haalt de oogst binnen voor het eeuwige leven. Zo kan de zaaier tegelijk met de maaier blij zijn over de oogst. 37 Want het spreekwoord klopt: 'De één zaait, de ander maait.' 38 Ik heb jullie gestuurd om een oogst binnen te halen waar jullie helemaal niets voor hebben gedaan. Anderen hebben vóór jullie gezaaid en bewerkt. Nu kunnen júllie oogsten waarvoor zíj hebben gewerkt."
39 Veel Samaritanen uit die stad gingen in Hem geloven. Dat kwam doordat de vrouw tegen hen had gezegd dat Hij alles wist wat ze had gedaan. 40 Ze vroegen Hem om bij hen te blijven. Daarom bleef Hij daar twee dagen. 41 Nog veel meer mensen gingen in Hem geloven. Nu door de dingen die ze zelf van Hem hoorden. 42 En ze zeiden tegen de vrouw: "We geloven Hem nu niet alleen maar om wat jij hebt gezegd. We hebben Hem nu ook zelf gehoord. En weten zeker dat Hij de Messias is, de Redder van de mensen."
43 Na die twee dagen vertrok Hij weer naar Galilea. 44 Jezus had eerder Zelf gezegd dat er niet naar een profeet wordt geluisterd in de streek waar hij vandaan komt. 45 Maar toen Hij in Galilea kwam, luisterden de Galileërs wel naar Hem. Dat kwam omdat ze hadden gezien wat Hij in Jeruzalem op het Paasfeest had gedaan. Ze waren namelijk zelf ook naar het Paasfeest geweest.
Jezus geneest een doodziek kind in Kana
46 Jezus ging in Galilea ook weer naar Kana. Daar had Hij water in wijn veranderd. In Kapernaüm in Galilea woonde een hofdienaar van de koning. Zijn zoontje was ziek. 47 Toen de man hoorde dat Jezus uit Judea naar Galilea was gekomen, ging hij naar Hem toe. Hij smeekte Hem om met hem mee te komen om zijn zoontje te genezen, omdat het kind anders zou sterven. 48 Jezus zei tegen hem: "Jullie willen Mij alleen maar geloven als jullie wonderen zien!" 49 De man zei tegen Hem: "Heer, kom nu alstublieft gauw mee, voordat mijn kind sterft!" 50 Jezus zei tegen hem: "Ga naar huis. Je zoon leeft!" De man geloofde wat Jezus zei en ging naar huis. 51 Toen hij nog onderweg was, kwamen zijn dienaren hem tegemoet en vertelden hem dat het goed was met zijn kind. 52 Hij vroeg hoe laat zijn zoon was begonnen op te knappen. Ze antwoordden: "Gistermiddag om één uur verdween de koorts." 53 Dat was precies het moment dat Jezus gezegd had: 'Je zoon leeft.' En hij en iedereen die in zijn huis woonde, geloofden in Jezus.
54 Dit was het tweede wonder dat Jezus in Galilea deed toen Hij uit Judea was teruggekomen.

- Johannes 4:5 Jozef had dit gebied niet direct van zijn vader Jakob gekregen. Toen het volk Israël het land Kanaän veroverde, gaf Jozua aan de stam van Jozef het gebied waarin Sichem lag. Daar werd Jozefs lichaam begraven in de akker die zijn vader Jakob lang daarvoor had gekocht van de bewoners van het land. Lees Jozua 24:32.
- Johannes 4:9 In de tijd dat de bewoners van het koninkrijk Israël door de koning van Assur gevangen waren meegenomen, waren er mensen van een ander volk in de streek Samaria komen wonen. Voor een deel hadden ze het Joodse geloof overgenomen en dat vermengd met hun eigen godsdiensten. Lees 2 Koningen 17:24-34. De Joden wilden niet met hen omgaan, omdat ze geen echte Joden waren.
- Johannes 4:10 Eigenlijk staat hier: 'levend water'. Dat betekent niet alleen vers of stromend water, maar ook: water dat leven geeft. Het heeft hier dus een andere betekenis dan de vrouw denkt.
- Johannes 4:26 Jezus gebruikt hier de woorden IK BEN. In het Grieks staat daar 'ego eimi,' wat veel nadrukkelijker is dan de gewone manier om 'ik ben...' te zeggen. In het Oude Testament maakt God Zich met de naam IK BEN aan Mozes bekend. Lees Exodus 3:14. Door deze naam te gebruiken geeft Jezus dus aan dat Hijzelf God is. Vergelijk met Matteüs 14:27.

The Woman at the Well
4 1-3 Jesus realized that the Pharisees were keeping count of the baptisms that he and John performed (although his disciples, not Jesus, did the actual baptizing). They had posted the score that Jesus was ahead, turning him and John into rivals in the eyes of the people. So Jesus left the Judean countryside and went back to Galilee.
4-6 To get there, he had to pass through Samaria. He came into Sychar, a Samaritan village that bordered the field Jacob had given his son Joseph. Jacob’s well was still there. Jesus, worn out by the trip, sat down at the well. It was noon.
7-8 A woman, a Samaritan, came to draw water. Jesus said, “Would you give me a drink of water?” (His disciples had gone to the village to buy food for lunch.)
9 The Samaritan woman, taken aback, asked, “How come you, a Jew, are asking me, a Samaritan woman, for a drink?” (Jews in those days wouldn’t be caught dead talking to Samaritans.)
10 Jesus answered, “If you knew the generosity of God and who I am, you would be asking me for a drink, and I would give you fresh, living water.”
11-12 The woman said, “Sir, you don’t even have a bucket to draw with, and this well is deep. So how are you going to get this ‘living water’? Are you a better man than our ancestor Jacob, who dug this well and drank from it, he and his sons and livestock, and passed it down to us?”
13-14 Jesus said, “Everyone who drinks this water will get thirsty again and again. Anyone who drinks the water I give will never thirst—not ever. The water I give will be an artesian spring within, gushing fountains of endless life.”
15 The woman said, “Sir, give me this water so I won’t ever get thirsty, won’t ever have to come back to this well again!”
16 He said, “Go call your husband and then come back.”
17-18 “I have no husband,” she said.
“That’s nicely put: ‘I have no husband.’ You’ve had five husbands, and the man you’re living with now isn’t even your husband. You spoke the truth there, sure enough.”
19-20 “Oh, so you’re a prophet! Well, tell me this: Our ancestors worshiped God at this mountain, but you Jews insist that Jerusalem is the only place for worship, right?”
21-23 “Believe me, woman, the time is coming when you Samaritans will worship the Father neither here at this mountain nor there in Jerusalem. You worship guessing in the dark; we Jews worship in the clear light of day. God’s way of salvation is made available through the Jews. But the time is coming—it has, in fact, come—when what you’re called will not matter and where you go to worship will not matter.
23-24 “It’s who you are and the way you live that count before God. Your worship must engage your spirit in the pursuit of truth. That’s the kind of people the Father is out looking for: those who are simply and honestly themselves before him in their worship. God is sheer being itself—Spirit. Those who worship him must do it out of their very being, their spirits, their true selves, in adoration.”
25 The woman said, “I don’t know about that. I do know that the Messiah is coming. When he arrives, we’ll get the whole story.”
26 “I am he,” said Jesus. “You don’t have to wait any longer or look any further.”
27 Just then his disciples came back. They were shocked. They couldn’t believe he was talking with that kind of a woman. No one said what they were all thinking, but their faces showed it.
28-30 The woman took the hint and left. In her confusion she left her water pot. Back in the village she told the people, “Come see a man who knew all about the things I did, who knows me inside and out. Do you think this could be the Messiah?” And they went out to see for themselves.
It’s Harvest Time
31 In the meantime, the disciples pressed him, “Rabbi, eat. Aren’t you going to eat?”
32 He told them, “I have food to eat you know nothing about.”
33 The disciples were puzzled. “Who could have brought him food?”
34-35 Jesus said, “The food that keeps me going is that I do the will of the One who sent me, finishing the work he started. As you look around right now, wouldn’t you say that in about four months it will be time to harvest? Well, I’m telling you to open your eyes and take a good look at what’s right in front of you. These Samaritan fields are ripe. It’s harvest time!
36-38 “The Harvester isn’t waiting. He’s taking his pay, gathering in this grain that’s ripe for eternal life. Now the Sower is arm in arm with the Harvester, triumphant. That’s the truth of the saying, ‘This one sows, that one harvests.’ I sent you to harvest a field you never worked. Without lifting a finger, you have walked in on a field worked long and hard by others.”
39-42 Many of the Samaritans from that village committed themselves to him because of the woman’s witness: “He knew all about the things I did. He knows me inside and out!” They asked him to stay on, so Jesus stayed two days. A lot more people entrusted their lives to him when they heard what he had to say. They said to the woman, “We’re no longer taking this on your say-so. We’ve heard it for ourselves and know it for sure. He’s the Savior of the world!”

43-45 After the two days he left for Galilee. Now, Jesus knew well from experience that a prophet is not respected in the place where he grew up. So when he arrived in Galilee, the Galileans welcomed him, but only because they were impressed with what he had done in Jerusalem during the Passover Feast, not that they really had a clue about who he was or what he was up to.
46-48 Now he was back in Cana of Galilee, the place where he made the water into wine. Meanwhile in Capernaum, there was a certain official from the king’s court whose son was sick. When he heard that Jesus had come from Judea to Galilee, he went and asked that he come down and heal his son, who was on the brink of death. Jesus put him off: “Unless you people are dazzled by a miracle, you refuse to believe.”
49 But the court official wouldn’t be put off. “Come down! It’s life or death for my son.”
50-51 Jesus simply replied, “Go home. Your son lives.”
The man believed the bare word Jesus spoke and headed home. On his way back, his servants intercepted him and announced, “Your son lives!”
52-53 He asked them what time he began to get better. They said, “The fever broke yesterday afternoon at one o’clock.” The father knew that that was the very moment Jesus had said, “Your son lives.”
53-54 That settled it. Not only he but his entire household believed. This was now the second sign Jesus gave after having come from Judea into Galilee.

Jesus Talks With a Samaritan Woman
4 Now Jesus learned that the Pharisees had heard that he was gaining and baptizing more disciples than John(A)— 2 although in fact it was not Jesus who baptized, but his disciples. 3 So he left Judea(B) and went back once more to Galilee.
4 Now he had to go through Samaria.(C) 5 So he came to a town in Samaria called Sychar, near the plot of ground Jacob had given to his son Joseph.(D) 6 Jacob’s well was there, and Jesus, tired as he was from the journey, sat down by the well. It was about noon.
7 When a Samaritan woman came to draw water, Jesus said to her, “Will you give me a drink?”(E) 8 (His disciples had gone into the town(F) to buy food.)
9 The Samaritan woman said to him, “You are a Jew and I am a Samaritan(G) woman. How can you ask me for a drink?” (For Jews do not associate with Samaritans.[a])
10 Jesus answered her, “If you knew the gift of God and who it is that asks you for a drink, you would have asked him and he would have given you living water.”(H)
11 “Sir,” the woman said, “you have nothing to draw with and the well is deep. Where can you get this living water? 12 Are you greater than our father Jacob, who gave us the well(I) and drank from it himself, as did also his sons and his livestock?”
13 Jesus answered, “Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again, 14 but whoever drinks the water I give them will never thirst.(J) Indeed, the water I give them will become in them a spring of water(K) welling up to eternal life.”(L)
15 The woman said to him, “Sir, give me this water so that I won’t get thirsty(M) and have to keep coming here to draw water.”
16 He told her, “Go, call your husband and come back.”
17 “I have no husband,” she replied.
Jesus said to her, “You are right when you say you have no husband. 18 The fact is, you have had five husbands, and the man you now have is not your husband. What you have just said is quite true.”
19 “Sir,” the woman said, “I can see that you are a prophet.(N) 20 Our ancestors worshiped on this mountain,(O) but you Jews claim that the place where we must worship is in Jerusalem.”(P)
21 “Woman,” Jesus replied, “believe me, a time is coming(Q) when you will worship the Father neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem.(R) 22 You Samaritans worship what you do not know;(S) we worship what we do know, for salvation is from the Jews.(T) 23 Yet a time is coming and has now come(U) when the true worshipers will worship the Father in the Spirit(V) and in truth, for they are the kind of worshipers the Father seeks. 24 God is spirit,(W) and his worshipers must worship in the Spirit and in truth.”
25 The woman said, “I know that Messiah” (called Christ)(X) “is coming. When he comes, he will explain everything to us.”
26 Then Jesus declared, “I, the one speaking to you—I am he.”(Y)
The Disciples Rejoin Jesus
27 Just then his disciples returned(Z) and were surprised to find him talking with a woman. But no one asked, “What do you want?” or “Why are you talking with her?”
28 Then, leaving her water jar, the woman went back to the town and said to the people, 29 “Come, see a man who told me everything I ever did.(AA) Could this be the Messiah?”(AB) 30 They came out of the town and made their way toward him.
31 Meanwhile his disciples urged him, “Rabbi,(AC) eat something.”
32 But he said to them, “I have food to eat(AD) that you know nothing about.”
33 Then his disciples said to each other, “Could someone have brought him food?”
34 “My food,” said Jesus, “is to do the will(AE) of him who sent me and to finish his work.(AF) 35 Don’t you have a saying, ‘It’s still four months until harvest’? I tell you, open your eyes and look at the fields! They are ripe for harvest.(AG) 36 Even now the one who reaps draws a wage and harvests(AH) a crop for eternal life,(AI) so that the sower and the reaper may be glad together. 37 Thus the saying ‘One sows and another reaps’(AJ) is true. 38 I sent you to reap what you have not worked for. Others have done the hard work, and you have reaped the benefits of their labor.”
Many Samaritans Believe
39 Many of the Samaritans from that town(AK) believed in him because of the woman’s testimony, “He told me everything I ever did.”(AL) 40 So when the Samaritans came to him, they urged him to stay with them, and he stayed two days. 41 And because of his words many more became believers.
42 They said to the woman, “We no longer believe just because of what you said; now we have heard for ourselves, and we know that this man really is the Savior of the world.”(AM)
Jesus Heals an Official’s Son
43 After the two days(AN) he left for Galilee. 44 (Now Jesus himself had pointed out that a prophet has no honor in his own country.)(AO) 45 When he arrived in Galilee, the Galileans welcomed him. They had seen all that he had done in Jerusalem at the Passover Festival,(AP) for they also had been there.
46 Once more he visited Cana in Galilee, where he had turned the water into wine.(AQ) And there was a certain royal official whose son lay sick at Capernaum. 47 When this man heard that Jesus had arrived in Galilee from Judea,(AR) he went to him and begged him to come and heal his son, who was close to death.
48 “Unless you people see signs and wonders,”(AS) Jesus told him, “you will never believe.”
49 The royal official said, “Sir, come down before my child dies.”
50 “Go,” Jesus replied, “your son will live.”
The man took Jesus at his word and departed. 51 While he was still on the way, his servants met him with the news that his boy was living. 52 When he inquired as to the time when his son got better, they said to him, “Yesterday, at one in the afternoon, the fever left him.”
53 Then the father realized that this was the exact time at which Jesus had said to him, “Your son will live.” So he and his whole household(AT) believed.
54 This was the second sign(AU) Jesus performed after coming from Judea to Galilee.

3 He left Judaea, and departed again into Galilee.
4 And he must needs go through Samaria.
5 Then cometh he to a city of Samaria, which is called Sychar, near to the parcel of ground that Jacob gave to his son Joseph.
6 Now Jacob's well was there. Jesus therefore, being wearied with his journey, sat thus on the well: and it was about the sixth hour.
7 There cometh a woman of Samaria to draw water: Jesus saith unto her, Give me to drink.

9 Then saith the woman of Samaria unto him, How is it that thou, being a Jew, askest drink of me, which am a woman of Samaria? for the Jews have no dealings with the Samaritans.
10 Jesus answered and said unto her, If thou knewest the gift of God, and who it is that saith to thee, Give me to drink; thou wouldest have asked of him, and he would have given thee living water.
11 The woman saith unto him, Sir, thou hast nothing to draw with, and the well is deep: from whence then hast thou that living water?
12 Art thou greater than our father Jacob, which gave us the well, and drank thereof himself, and his children, and his cattle?
13 Jesus answered and said unto her, Whosoever drinketh of this water shall thirst again:
14 But whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst; but the water that I shall give him shall be in him a well of water springing up into everlasting life.
15 The woman saith unto him, Sir, give me this water, that I thirst not, neither come hither to draw.
16 Jesus saith unto her, Go, call thy husband, and come hither.
17 The woman answered and said, I have no husband. Jesus said unto her, Thou hast well said, I have no husband:
18 For thou hast had five husbands; and he whom thou now hast is not thy husband: in that saidst thou truly.
19 The woman saith unto him, Sir, I perceive that thou art a prophet.
20 Our fathers worshipped in this mountain; and ye say, that in Jerusalem is the place where men ought to worship.
21 Jesus saith unto her, Woman, believe me, the hour cometh, when ye shall neither in this mountain, nor yet at Jerusalem, worship the Father.
22 Ye worship ye know not what: we know what we worship: for salvation is of the Jews.
23 But the hour cometh, and now is, when the true worshippers shall worship the Father in spirit and in truth: for the Father seeketh such to worship him.
24 God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth.
25 The woman saith unto him, I know that Messias cometh, which is called Christ: when he is come, he will tell us all things.
26 Jesus saith unto her, I that speak unto thee am he.
27 And upon this came his disciples, and marvelled that he talked with the woman: yet no man said, What seekest thou? or, Why talkest thou with her?
28 The woman then left her waterpot, and went her way into the city, and saith to the men,
29 Come, see a man, which told me all things that ever I did: is not this the Christ?
30 Then they went out of the city, and came unto him.
31 In the mean while his disciples prayed him, saying, Master, eat.
32 But he said unto them, I have meat to eat that ye know not of.
33 Therefore said the disciples one to another, Hath any man brought him ought to eat?
34 Jesus saith unto them, My meat is to do the will of him that sent me, and to finish his work.
35 Say not ye, There are yet four months, and then cometh harvest? behold, I say unto you, Lift up your eyes, and look on the fields; for they are white already to harvest.
36 And he that reapeth receiveth wages, and gathereth fruit unto life eternal: that both he that soweth and he that reapeth may rejoice together.
37 And herein is that saying true, One soweth, and another reapeth.
38 I sent you to reap that whereon ye bestowed no labour: other men laboured, and ye are entered into their labours.
39 And many of the Samaritans of that city believed on him for the saying of the woman, which testified, He told me all that ever I did.
40 So when the Samaritans were come unto him, they besought him that he would tarry with them: and he abode there two days.
41 And many more believed because of his own word;
42 And said unto the woman, Now we believe, not because of thy saying: for we have heard him ourselves, and know that this is indeed the Christ, the Saviour of the world.
43 Now after two days he departed thence, and went into Galilee.
44 For Jesus himself testified, that a prophet hath no honour in his own country.
45 Then when he was come into Galilee, the Galilaeans received him, having seen all the things that he did at Jerusalem at the feast: for they also went unto the feast.
46 So Jesus came again into Cana of Galilee, where he made the water wine. And there was a certain nobleman, whose son was sick at Capernaum.
47 When he heard that Jesus was come out of Judaea into Galilee, he went unto him, and besought him that he would come down, and heal his son: for he was at the point of death.
48 Then said Jesus unto him, Except ye see signs and wonders, ye will not believe.
49 The nobleman saith unto him, Sir, come down ere my child die.
50 Jesus saith unto him, Go thy way; thy son liveth. And the man believed the word that Jesus had spoken unto him, and he went his way.
51 And as he was now going down, his servants met him, and told him, saying, Thy son liveth.
52 Then enquired he of them the hour when he began to amend. And they said unto him, Yesterday at the seventh hour the fever left him.
53 So the father knew that it was at the same hour, in the which Jesus said unto him, Thy son liveth: and himself believed, and his whole house.
54 This is again the second miracle that Jesus did, when he was come out of Judaea into Galilee.
