イエス、神の永遠のことば
1 初めに、地球が創られる前から、
ことばはそこにいた。
ことばは神と共にあり、
ことばは神であった。
2 彼はそこに初めから、神と共にいた。
3 彼を通して、全てのものは創られた。
神の創造の全てに、彼なしに創られたものは何もない。
4 彼の中にはいのちがあり、
そのいのちは、全ての人にとっての光だった。
5 光は暗闇の中で輝き、
闇はこれを打ち負かしてはいない。
6 神に遣わされた人にヨハネという男がいた。 7 彼は光について人々に伝えるために来た。目的は、ヨハネを通して全ての人が光である方について聞き、彼を信じることだった。 8 光はヨハネではない。しかし、ヨハネは人々に光のことを伝えるために来た。
9 本当の光、
全ての人に光をもたらす者は、世界にその姿を現そうとしている。
10 ことばは、すでに世界にあった。
彼を通してこの世界は創られたが、この世は彼が誰なのかを受け入れなかった。
11 彼は自分のものである世界にやって来たが、
彼の国民は彼を歓迎しなかった。
12 多くの人が彼を受け入れ、彼を信じた。
神はこの人たちに神の子供となる権利を与えてくれた。
13 そう！彼らは神の子供たちとなったのだ。

人間の望みや願いが関係しているのではない。
神自身が彼らを自分の子供にしたのだ。
14 ことばは人間になり、
私たちの間で生きた。
私たちは神々しい彼の偉大さを見た。
父の1人息子に属する栄光を見たのだ。
彼は神の恵みと真理に満たされていた。
15 洗礼者ヨハネはこの知らせを公にした時、その方のことについてこの様に語っていた：「『俺の後に来る方は、自分よりもすごいお方だ。俺が生まれる前から彼はそこにいた』と言ったのは、この方のことだ！」
16 彼は神の恵みと真理で満ちていた。
そのため、私たちは彼から次々と祝福を受けとった。
17 すなわち、掟は、モーセを通して私たちに与えられた。
恵みと真理は、イエス・キリストを通してもたらされた。
18 神を見た人は誰もいない。
だが、唯一無二の1人息子、
その方自身が神であり、
どのような方なのかを神が私たちに見せてくれた。
彼は父にとても近い存在で、
彼を見ることは神を見ることのようだ。
救い主について語るヨハネ

19 神殿の都エルサレムにいたユダヤ指導者たちが、何人かの祭司やレビ人たちを、洗礼者ヨハネのもとに送りつけて質問させた。「あなたはいったい何者ですか？」
ヨハネは彼らに真実を伝えた。 20 恥じらいや、ためらいもなく率直に言った。「オレは救い主ではありません」
21 彼らは聞いた。「では一体、あなたは？まさか預言者エリヤですか？」
ヨハネは答えた。「エリヤでもありません」
すると、彼らは、「ならば、約束されし預言者ですか？」
ヨハネは答えた。「あの預言者でもありません」
22 再び彼らは聞いた。「では、あなたは誰ですか？私たちをここへと派遣した者たちへ説明する上で、お答えを下さい。あなたは自身についてなんとあなたは言いますか？」
23 洗礼者ヨハネは、預言者イザヤの言葉を引用してこう言った。「オレは・・・
『荒地で叫ぶ声がする・・・
神のお通りだ、道を整えろ！王である神のために道をまっすぐにせよ！』
と言う者です」 24 しつこく尋ねるのは、パリサイ派のユダヤ人たちだった。 25 彼らは、続けざまに聞いた。「救い主でもない、エリヤでも、また預言者でもないと・・・では、なぜ洗礼を授けているのですか？」
26 ヨハネは答えた。「オレは、水によって洗礼を授ける権威をいただいてる。が、みんなの上に立ち、みんなが知りもしないお方が 27 オレの後に現れる。オレにはその方の靴ひもをほどく価値すらありませんぬ」
28 これらはヨルダン川対岸にあるベタニヤ地方での出来事だった。ここで洗礼者ヨハネは洗礼を授けていたのだ。
イエス、神の子羊
29 翌日、洗礼者ヨハネは、自分のもとへ向かってくるイエスの姿を見るとこう言った。「見よ！世の過ちを取り除く神の子羊です！ 30 『俺の後に来るお方は、自分よりも遥かに勝る。俺が生まれるずっと前から、初めからいる方だ！』と、俺が常日頃、話していたのは、このお方のことです！ 31 俺も初めはその方が誰なのか知りませんでした。ですが、俺が水で洗礼を授けに来たのは、この方が救い主であることを、神の国のみんなへ知らせるためなのです」
32-34 そして、洗礼者ヨハネはみんなに聞かせるためにこう言った。「水で洗礼を授けるために、俺を遣わされた神が俺に言った。『あなたは見るだろう。聖霊がその人の上に降りてきて、その人の上に止まるのを。その方こそ、聖霊によって洗礼を授ける者だ！』俺はこれが起きたのを見た。聖霊がハトのように天から降ってきて、その方に留まったのだ。その時まで、俺は誰が救い主なのかを知らなかった。だから、俺はこう伝えている・・・『彼こそ神のひとり子です！』と・・・」
イエスの最初の弟子
35 翌日、洗礼者ヨハネは昨日と同じ場所に2人の弟子といた。 36 すると、ヨハネはイエスが通り過ぎるのを見て言った。「おぉ～見て！あの方こそ、神の子羊だ！」
37 洗礼者ヨハネの言葉を聞いた2人の弟子は、すぐにイエスの後を追った。 38 イエスは振り返って言った。「ん？何の用だ？」
彼らは言った。「先生、今夜はどちらにお泊まりで？」
39 イエスは答えた。「ついてくれば分かる！」そこで2人はイエスについていき、午後4時ごろにイエスの宿泊先に着いた。そして、その日はイエスとともに時間を過ごしたのだった。
40 洗礼者ヨハネに言われて、2人はイエスに従うことを決めた。1人は、シモン・ペテロの弟アンデレ。 41 アンデレは真っ先に兄シモン・ペテロのもとへ行った。「兄貴！救い主を見つけたぞ！」
42 アンデレはさっそく兄シモンをイエスのもとへ連れて行った。シモンを見てイエスが言った。「ヨハネの子、シモン。あなたは岩と呼ばれる・・・！」
43 翌日、アンデレは彼らにガリラヤ地方へと向かってほしかった。イエスはピリポを見つけ、彼に言った。「俺について来い！」 44 ピリポはアンデレとペテロと同じく、ベツサイダ村出身だ。 45 ピリポはナタナエルを見つけて、こう言った。「聞いてくれ！掟の書物に書かれていた方を見つけたんだ！代々続いてきた預言者たちも記してきた、あのお方だ！丘の上のナザレ村から来たヨセフの子、イエスって言うんだ！」
46 だが、ナタナエルはピリポに言った。「ナザレ村？笑わせるなよ！ピリポ！ナザレ村からそんな人が現れるかって」
ピリポは答えた。「会えば分かるって！」
47 イエスは自分のもとへ向かってくるナタナエルを見て言った。「この男は信頼に値する正真正銘のイスラエル人だ！」
48 ナタナエルは尋ねた。「私のことを・・・どうやって・・・どう、ご存じなのですか？」
イエスは答えた。「ピリポが話しをするよりも前に、あなたがイチジクの木の下にいるのをわたしは見たさ！」
49 それからナタナエルは言った。「先生！あなたこそ！神のひとり子、イスラエルの王です！」
50 イエスは彼に言った。「おいおい、イチジクの木の下にいるのを見たと言っただけで信じるのか？これからお前たちはもっと大きなものを目にしていくぞ！」 51 そして、イエスは言った。「今からわたしが言うことを信じるんだ。お前たちはみんな、天の窓が開かれていくのを見る！人の子の上に『天使が行き交う』光景を目の当たりにするのだ！」

The Prologue to John’s Gospel
1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 This one was in the beginning with God. 3 All things came into being through him, and apart from him not one thing came into being that[a] has come into being. 4 In him was life, and the life was the light of humanity.[b] 5 And the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not overcome[c] it.
6 A man came, sent from God, whose name was[d] John. 7 This one came for a witness, in order that he could testify about the light, so that all would believe through him. 8 That one was not the light, but came[e] in order that he could testify about the light. 9 The true light, who gives light to every person, was coming into the world. 10 He was in the world, and the world came into being through him, and the world did not recognize[f] him. 11 He came to his own things, and his own people did not receive him. 12 But as many as received him—to those who believe in his name—he gave to them authority to become children of God, 13 who were born not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of a husband, but of God.
14 And the Word became flesh and took up residence among us, and we saw his glory, glory as of the one and only from the Father, full of grace and truth. 15 John testified about him and cried out, saying, “This one was he about whom I said, ‘The one who comes after me is ahead of me, because he existed before me.’” 16 For from his fullness we have all received, and grace after grace. 17 For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came about through Jesus Christ. 18 No one has seen God at any time; the one and only, God, the one who is in the bosom of the Father—that one has made him[g] known.
John the Baptist Testifies to Jesus
19 And this is the testimony of John, when the Jews sent[h] priests and Levites from Jerusalem so that they could ask him, “Who are you?” 20 And he confessed—and he did not deny, and confessed—“I am not the Christ!” 21 And they asked him, “Then who are you? Are you Elijah?” And he said, “I am not!” “Are you the Prophet?”[i] And he answered, “No!” 22 Then they said to him, “Who are you, so that we can give an answer to those who sent us? What do you say about yourself?”
23 He said,
“I am ‘the voice of one crying out in the wilderness,
“Make straight the way of the Lord,”’[j]
just as Isaiah the prophet said.” 24 (And they had been sent from the Pharisees.) 25 And they asked him and said to him, “Why then are you baptizing, if you are not the Christ, nor Elijah, nor the Prophet?”
26 John answered them, saying, “I baptize with water. In your midst stands one whom you do not know— 27 the one who comes after me, of whom I am not worthy to untie[k] the strap of his sandal!” 28 These things took place in Bethany on the other side of the Jordan, where John was baptizing.
29 On the next day he saw Jesus coming to him and said, “Look! The Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world! 30 This one is the one about whom I said, ‘After me is coming a man who is ahead of me, because he existed before me.’ 31 And I did not know him, but in order that he could be revealed to Israel, because of this I came baptizing with water.”
32 And John testified, saying, “I have seen the Spirit descending like a dove from heaven and remaining upon him. 33 And I did not know him, but the one who sent me to baptize with water, that one said to me, ‘The one upon whom you see the Spirit descending and remaining upon him—this one is the one who baptizes with the Holy Spirit.’ 34 And I have seen and testify that this one is the Chosen One[l] of God.
Two of John’s Disciples Follow Jesus
35 On the next day again John was standing there,[m] and two of his disciples, 36 and looking at Jesus as he[n] was walking by, he said, “Look! The Lamb of God!” 37 And the two disciples heard him speaking, and they followed Jesus. 38 And Jesus, turning around and seeing them following him,[o] said to them, “What do you seek?” And they said to him, “Rabbi” (which means when[p] translated “Teacher”), “where are you staying?” 39 He said to them, “Come and you will see!” So they came and saw where he was staying, and they stayed with him that day (it was about the tenth hour).
Andrew Declares Jesus to be the Messiah
40 Andrew, the brother of Simon Peter, was one of the two who heard John and followed him. 41 This one first found his own brother Simon and said to him, “We have found the Messiah!” (which is translated “Christ”). 42 He brought him to Jesus. Looking at him, Jesus said, “You are Simon the son of John. You will be called Cephas” (which is interpreted “Peter”).
Jesus Calls Philip and Nathanael
43 On the next day he wanted to depart for Galilee, and he found Philip. And Jesus said to him, “Follow me!” 44 (Now Philip was from Bethsaida, the town of Andrew and Peter.) 45 Philip found Nathanael and said to him, “We have found the one whom Moses wrote about in the law, and the prophets wrote about—Jesus son of Joseph from Nazareth!” 46 And Nathanael said to him, “Can anything good come out of Nazareth?” Philip said to him, “Come and see!”
47 Jesus saw Nathanael coming toward him and said about him, “Look! A true Israelite[q] in whom is no deceit!” 48 Nathanael said to him, “From where do you know me?” Jesus answered and said to him, “Before Philip called you, when you[r] were under the fig tree, I saw you.” 49 Nathanael answered him, “Rabbi, you are the Son of God! You are the king of Israel!” 50 Jesus answered and said to him, “Because I said to you that I saw you under the fig tree, do you believe? You will see greater things than these!” 51 And he said to him, “Truly, truly I say to all of you, you will see heaven opened and the angels of God ascending and descending upon the Son of Man.”

The Word Became Flesh

The Testimony of John the Baptist

(AR)Are you Elijah?” He said, “I am not.” “Are you (AS)the Prophet?” And he answered, “No.” 22 So they said to him, “Who are you? We need to give an answer to those who sent us. What do you say about yourself?” 23 He said, “I am (AT)the voice of one crying out in the wilderness, ‘Make straight[h] the way of the Lord,’ as the prophet Isaiah said.”
24 (Now they had been sent from the Pharisees.) 25 They asked him, (AU)“Then why are you baptizing, if you are neither the Christ, nor Elijah, nor the Prophet?” 26 John answered them, (AV)“I baptize with water, but among you stands one you do not know, 27 even (AW)he who comes after me, the strap of whose sandal I am not worthy to untie.” 28 These things took place in Bethany across the Jordan, where John was baptizing.
Behold, the Lamb of God
29 The next day he saw Jesus coming toward him, and said, “Behold, (AX)the Lamb of God, who (AY)takes away the sin (AZ)of the world! 30 This is he of whom I said, (BA)‘After me comes a man who ranks before me, because he was before me.’ 31 I myself did not know him, but (BB)for this purpose I came baptizing with water, that he might be revealed to Israel.” 32 And John (BC)bore witness: (BD)“I saw the Spirit descend from heaven like a dove, and (BE)it remained on him. 33 I myself did not know him, but (BF)he who sent me to baptize (BG)with water said to me, ‘He on whom you see the Spirit descend and remain, (BH)this is he who baptizes (BI)with the Holy Spirit.’ 34 And I have seen and have borne witness that this is the Son[i] of God.”
Jesus Calls the First Disciples
35 The next day again John was standing with two of his disciples, 36 and he looked at Jesus as he walked by and said, “Behold, (BJ)the Lamb of God!” 37 The two disciples heard him say this, and they followed Jesus. 38 Jesus turned and saw them following and said to them, (BK)“What are you seeking?” And they said to him, (BL)“Rabbi” (which means Teacher), “where are you staying?” 39 He said to them, “Come and you will see.” So they came and saw where he was staying, and they stayed with him that day, for it was about the tenth hour.[j] 40 (BM)One of the two who heard John speak and followed Jesus[k] was Andrew, Simon Peter's brother. 41 He first found his own brother Simon and said to him, “We have found (BN)the Messiah” (which means Christ). 42 He brought him to Jesus. Jesus looked at him and said, “You are Simon the son of (BO)John. You shall be called (BP)Cephas” (which means (BQ)Peter[l]).
Jesus Calls Philip and Nathanael
43 (BR)The next day Jesus decided (BS)to go to Galilee. He found Philip and said to him, “Follow me.” 44 Now (BT)Philip was from Bethsaida, the city of Andrew and Peter. 45 Philip found (BU)Nathanael and said to him, “We have found him of whom (BV)Moses in the Law and also the prophets wrote, Jesus (BW)of Nazareth, (BX)the son of Joseph.” 46 Nathanael said to him, (BY)“Can anything good come out of Nazareth?” Philip said to him, “Come and see.” 47 Jesus saw Nathanael coming toward him and said of him, “Behold, (BZ)an Israelite indeed, (CA)in whom there is no deceit!” 48 Nathanael said to him, “How (CB)do you know me?” Jesus answered him, “Before Philip called you, when you were under the fig tree, I saw you.” 49 Nathanael answered him, (CC)“Rabbi, (CD)you are the Son of God! You are the (CE)King of Israel!” 50 Jesus answered him, “Because I said to you, ‘I saw you under the fig tree,’ do you believe?
