4 さて、イエスのもとにはぞくぞくと人々が詰めかけました。バプテスマ(洗礼)を受けて弟子になった者の数はヨハネよりも多いといううわさが、パリサイ人たちの耳に入りました。イエスはこのことを知ると、 2 ――もっとも、実際にバプテスマを授けていたのはイエス自身ではなく、弟子たちでしたが―― 3 ユダヤを去り、またガリラヤ地方へ行かれました。 4 その途中で、どうしてもサマリヤを通らなければなりませんでした。 5-6 サマリヤのスカルという村にさしかかったのは、ちょうど正午ごろでした。そこに、昔ヤコブが息子ヨセフに与えた土地があり、ヤコブの井戸がありました。日がかんかんに照りつける長い道のりを歩いて来られたイエスは疲れて、井戸のそばに腰をおろしました。
7 まもなくサマリヤ人の女が一人、水を汲みに来ました。イエスは、「すみませんが、水を一杯下さい」と声をおかけになりました。 8 そのとき弟子たちは、村に食べ物を買いに行っており、ほかにはだれもいませんでした。 9 女はびっくりして言いました。「まあ、あなたはユダヤ人ではありませんか。サマリヤ人の私に、どうして水をくれなどと頼むのですか。」当時、ユダヤ人はサマリヤ人を見下し、口をきこうとさえしなかったのです。 10 「もし、神があなたにどんなにすばらしい贈り物を用意しておられるか、また、わたしがだれなのかを知っていれば、あなたのほうから、いのちの水を下さいと願ったでしょう。」 11 「そんなこと言っても、あなたは水を汲むおけも綱も持っていないのですよ。この井戸はとても深いのです。そのいのちの水を、いったいどこから汲むのですか。 12 あなたは、私たちの先祖ヤコブ様よりも偉いと言うのですか。ヤコブ様はこの井戸を私たちにくれました。ヤコブ様も、その子孫も家畜もみんな、この井戸の水を喜んで飲んだのです。これより良い水をくれると言うのですか。」 13 イエスは言われました。「この水を飲んでも、すぐにまた、のどが渇きます。 14 けれども、わたしがあげる水を飲めば、絶対に渇くことはありません。わたしがあげる水は、それを飲む人のうちで永久にかれない泉となり、いつまでもその人を永遠のいのちで潤すのです。」 15 「先生。そのような水があるなら、私に下さい。そうすればのども渇かないし、毎日こんな遠くまで歩いて、水汲みに来なくてすむもの。」 16 「帰って、夫を連れて来なさい。」 17-18 「……。私、結婚なんかしていません。」「そうですね。あなたは五回も結婚したけれど、今いっしょに暮らしている男は、確かに夫ではありません。」 19 「先生。あなたは預言者でしょう。 20 だったら教えてください。ユダヤ人は、礼拝の場所はエルサレムだけだと言いはるし、サマリヤ人は、私たちの先祖が礼拝したこのゲリジム山だと言っています。どうしてなのですか?」 21-24 「いいですか。父なる神を礼拝する場所は、この山か、それともエルサレムかなどと、こだわる必要のない時が来ます。大切なのは、どこで礼拝するかではありません。どのように礼拝するかです。霊的な、真心からの礼拝をしているかどうかが問題なのです。神は霊なるお方ですから、正しい礼拝をするには、聖霊の助けが必要です。神はそのような礼拝をしてほしいのです。あなたがたサマリヤ人は、神のことはほとんど何も知らないで礼拝していますが、私たちユダヤ人はよく知っています。救いはユダヤ人を通してこの世に来るのですから。」 25 「私は、キリストと呼ばれるメシヤがおいでになることだけは知っています。その方がおいでになれば、いっさいのことを説明してくださるのでしょう。」 26 「わたしがそのメシヤです。」
27 ちょうどその時、弟子たちが戻って来ました。驚いたことに、イエスが女と話しておられるではありませんか。しかし、どうしてなのか、何を話しているのか尋ねた者はいませんでした。 28 女は水がめを井戸のそばに置いたまま村に帰り、会う人ごとに話しかけました。 29 「ねえ、来て、会ってごらんよ。私のしてきたことを、何もかも言い当てた方がいらっしゃるの。あの方こそキリスト(救い主)に違いないよ。」 30 この誘いに村人たちは、イエスに会おうと、ぞくぞくと押しかけました。
31 そのころ、弟子たちはイエスに、「先生。どうぞお食事を」と勧めましたが、 32 イエスは、「いや、けっこうです。わたしには、あなたがたの知らない食べ物があるのです」と言われました。 33 弟子たちはけげんそうに、「だれかが食べ物を持って来たんだろうか」と口々に言いました。 34 そこでイエスは説明なさいました。「いいですか、わたしの言う食べ物とは、わたしを遣わされた神のお心にかなうことをし、神の仕事をやり遂げることなのです。 35 あなたがたは、『刈り入れはまだ四か月も先のこと、夏も終わりにならなければ始まらない』と思っているようですね。だが、回りをよく見なさい。人のたましいの畑は広々と一面に実り、刈り入れを待つばかりです。 36 やがて、刈り入れをする人たちはたくさんの報酬をもらい、永遠のいのちに入るたましいを天の倉に納めます。その時、種をまいた者も、刈り入れをした者も共々に、大いに喜ぶのです。 37 『一人が種をまき、ほかの人が刈り入れる』ということわざのとおりにです。 38 あなたがたが自分で種まきをしなかった畑に、わたしはあなたがたを遣わしました。ほかの人々が苦労して育てたものを、あなたがたが刈り入れるのです。」
39 スカルの村から押しかけたサマリヤ人の多くは、例の女が、「あの方は、私のしてきたことを何もかも言い当てた」と言うのを聞いて、イエスをメシヤと信じました。 40 彼らは井戸のところに来てイエスにお会いすると、村に滞在してくださいと頼みました。そこでイエスは、二日間滞在しました。 41 その間に、さらに多くの人がイエスのことばを聞いて信じました。 42 人々は女に、「もう私たちは、あなたが話してくれたことを聞いたから信じているのではない。この方が言われることを、じかに聞いたからだ。この方こそ、ほんとうに世の救い主だ」と言いました。
43 さて、その二日後、イエスはスカルの村を去り、ガリラヤへ行かれました。 44 イエスは常々、「預言者は、故郷では尊敬されないものです」と言っておられました。 45 ところが、どうでしょう。ガリラヤの人たちは、大喜びでイエスを迎えたのです。それもそのはず、この人たちは過越の祭りの時にエルサレムにいて、イエスのなさったことを全部見ていたからです。
役人の息子を治す
46 ガリラヤ旅行の途中、イエスはカナの村に行かれました。以前、水をぶどう酒に変えた所です。さて、カペナウムの町に、重病の息子をかかえた政府の役人がいました。 47 イエスがユダヤを出てガリラヤを旅行中だということをうわさで聞き、役人はカナまでやって来ました。そしてイエスにお会いすると、「息子が今にも死にそうです。どうぞカペナウムへおいでになって、治してやってください」と熱心に頼みました。 48 イエスは言われました。「わたしがもっと多くの奇跡を行わなければ、信じようとしないのですか。」 49 「先生。お願いです。子どもが死なないうちにおいでください。」 50 「さあ、家にお帰りなさい。お子さんは治りました。」役人は、イエスのことばを信じ、家へ急ぎました。 51 途中、召使たちが迎えに来て、「ご子息は、すっかりよくなりました」と知らせました。 52 「えっ、いつからだ。」「昨日の午後一時ごろでしょうか、急に熱が下がりました。」 53 それはイエスが、「お子さんは治りました」と言われた時刻とぴったり一致していました。このことがあって、役人と彼の家の者全員が、イエスをメシヤと信じました。
54 これは、イエスがユダヤから来てガリラヤで行われた、第二の奇跡です。

The Samaritan Woman at Jacob’s Well
4 Now when Jesus knew that the Pharisees had heard that Jesus was making and baptizing more disciples than John 2 (although Jesus himself was not baptizing, but his disciples), 3 he left Judea and departed again for Galilee. 4 And it was necessary for him to go through Samaria.
5 Now he came to a town of Samaria called Sychar, near the piece of land that Jacob had given to his son Joseph. 6 And Jacob’s well was there, so Jesus, because he had become tired from the journey, simply sat down at the well. It was about the sixth hour.
7 A woman of Samaria came to draw water. Jesus said to her, “Give me water[a] to drink.” 8 (For his disciples had gone away into the town so that they could buy food.) 9 So the Samaritan woman said to him, “How do you, being a Jew, ask from me water[b] to drink, since I[c] am a Samaritan woman?” (For Jews have no dealings with Samaritans.)
10 Jesus answered and said to her, “If you had known the gift of God and who it is who says to you, ‘Give me water[d] to drink,’ you would have asked him, and he would have given you living water.” 11 The woman said to him, “Sir, you have no bucket and the well is deep! From where then do you get this living water? 12 You are not greater than our father Jacob, are you,[e] who gave us the well and drank from it himself, and his sons and his livestock?”
13 Jesus answered and said to her, “Everyone who drinks of this water will be thirsty again. 14 But whoever drinks of this water which I will give to him will never be thirsty for eternity, but the water which I will give to him will become in him a well of water springing up to eternal life.” 15 The woman said to him, “Sir, give me this water, so that I will not be thirsty or come here to draw water!”[f] 16 He said to her, “Go, call your husband and come here.” 17 The woman answered and said to him, “I do not have a husband.” Jesus said to her, “You have said rightly, ‘I do not have a husband,’ 18 for you have had five husbands, and the one whom you have now is not your husband; this you have said truthfully!”
19 The woman said to him, “Sir, I see that you are a prophet. 20 Our fathers worshiped on this mountain, and you people[g] say that in Jerusalem is the place where it is necessary to worship.” 21 Jesus said to her, “Believe me, woman, that an hour is coming when neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem will you worship the Father. 22 You worship what you do not know. We worship what we know, because salvation is from the Jews. 23 But an hour is coming—and now is here[h]—when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for indeed the Father seeks such people to be his worshipers. 24 God is spirit, and the ones who worship him must worship in spirit and truth.” 25 The woman said to him, “I know that Messiah is coming” (the one called Christ); “whenever that one comes, he will proclaim all things to us.” 26 Jesus said to her, “I, the one speaking to you, am he.[i]
The Disciples and the Harvest
27 And at this point[j] his disciples came, and they were astonished that he was speaking with a woman. However, no one said, “What do you seek?” or “Why are you speaking with her?” 28 So the woman left her water jar and went away into the town and said to the people,[k] 29 “Come, see a man who told me everything I have ever done! Perhaps this one is the Christ?” 30 They went out from the town and were coming to him.
31 In the meanwhile the disciples were asking him, saying, “Rabbi, eat something!”[l] 32 But he said to them, “I have food to eat that you do not know about.” 33 So the disciples began to say[m] to one another, “No one brought him anything[n] to eat, did they?”[o] 34 Jesus said to them, “My food is that I do the will of the one who sent me and complete his work. 35 Do you not say, ‘There are yet four months and the harvest comes’? Behold, I say to you, lift up your eyes and look at the fields, that they are white for harvest already.[p] 36 The one who reaps receives wages and gathers fruit for eternal life, in order that the one who sows and the one who reaps can rejoice together. 37 For in this instance[q] the saying is true, ‘It is one who sows and another who reaps.’ 38 I sent you to reap what you did not work for; others have worked, and you have entered into their work.”
The Samaritans and the Savior of the World
39 Now from that town many of the Samaritans believed in him because of the word of the woman who testified, “He told me everything that I have done.” 40 So when the Samaritans came to him, they began asking[r] him to stay with them. And he stayed there two days. 41 And many more believed because of his word, 42 And they were saying to the woman, “No longer because of what you said[s] do we believe, for we ourselves have heard, and we know that this one is truly the Savior of the world!”
Return to Galilee
43 And after the two days he departed from there into Galilee. 44 For Jesus himself testified that a prophet has no honor in his own homeland. 45 So when he came to Galilee, the Galileans welcomed him, because they[t] had seen all the things he had done in Jerusalem at the feast (for they themselves had also come to the feast).
A Royal Official’s Son Is Healed
46 Now he came again to Cana in Galilee, where he had made the water wine. And there was at Capernaum a certain royal official whose son was sick. 47 This man, when he[u] heard that Jesus had come from Judea into Galilee, went to him and asked that he come down and heal his son, for he was about to die. 48 So Jesus said to him, “Unless you people[v] see signs and wonders, you will never believe!” 49 The royal official said to him, “Sir, come down before my child dies!” 50 Jesus said to him, “Go, your son will live.” The man believed the word that Jesus spoke to him, and he departed.
51 Now as[w] he was going down, his slaves met him, saying that his child was alive. 52 So he inquired from them the hour at which he had gotten better. Then they said to him, “Yesterday at the seventh hour the fever left him.” 53 So the father knew that it was that[x] same hour at which Jesus said to him, “Your son will live,” and he himself believed, and his whole household. 54 Now this is again a second sign Jesus performed when he[y] came from Judea into Galilee.

7 A woman of Samaria came to draw water. Jesus said to her, “Give me a drink.” 8 His disciples had gone into the town to buy food. 9 [e]The Samaritan woman said to him, “How can you, a Jew, ask me, a Samaritan woman, for a drink?”(B) (For Jews use nothing in common with Samaritans.) 10 [f]Jesus answered and said to her,(C) “If you knew the gift of God and who is saying to you, ‘Give me a drink,’ you would have asked him and he would have given you living water.” 11 [The woman] said to him, “Sir,[g] you do not even have a bucket and the well is deep; where then can you get this living water? 12 Are you greater than our father Jacob, who gave us this well and drank from it himself with his children and his flocks?”(D) 13 Jesus answered and said to her, “Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again; 14 but whoever drinks the water I shall give will never thirst; the water I shall give will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life.”(E) 15 The woman said to him, “Sir, give me this water, so that I may not be thirsty or have to keep coming here to draw water.”
16 Jesus said to her, “Go call your husband and come back.” 17 The woman answered and said to him, “I do not have a husband.” Jesus answered her, “You are right in saying, ‘I do not have a husband.’ 18 For you have had five husbands, and the one you have now is not your husband. What you have said is true.”(F) 19 The woman said to him, “Sir, I can see that you are a prophet.(G) 20 Our ancestors worshiped on this mountain;[h] but you people say that the place to worship is in Jerusalem.”(H) 21 Jesus said to her, “Believe me, woman, the hour is coming when you will worship the Father neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem. 22 You people worship what you do not understand; we worship what we understand, because salvation is from the Jews.(I) 23 But the hour is coming, and is now here, when true worshipers will worship the Father in Spirit and truth;[i] and indeed the Father seeks such people to worship him. 24 God is Spirit, and those who worship him must worship in Spirit and truth.”(J) 25 [j]The woman said to him, “I know that the Messiah is coming,(K) the one called the Anointed; when he comes, he will tell us everything.” 26 Jesus said to her, “I am he,[k] the one who is speaking with you.”(L)
27 At that moment his disciples returned, and were amazed that he was talking with a woman,[l] but still no one said, “What are you looking for?” or “Why are you talking with her?” 28 The woman left her water jar and went into the town and said to the people, 29 “Come see a man who told me everything I have done. Could he possibly be the Messiah?” 30 They went out of the town and came to him. 31 Meanwhile, the disciples urged him, “Rabbi, eat.” 32 But he said to them, “I have food to eat of which you do not know.” 33 So the disciples said to one another, “Could someone have brought him something to eat?” 34 Jesus said to them, “My food is to do the will of the one who sent me and to finish his work.(M) 35 Do you not say, ‘In four months[m] the harvest will be here’? I tell you, look up and see the fields ripe for the harvest.(N) 36 The reaper is already[n] receiving his payment and gathering crops for eternal life, so that the sower and reaper can rejoice together.(O) 37 For here the saying is verified that ‘One sows and another reaps.’(P) 38 I sent you to reap what you have not worked for; others have done the work, and you are sharing the fruits of their work.”
39 Many of the Samaritans of that town began to believe in him because of the word of the woman[o] who testified, “He told me everything I have done.” 40 When the Samaritans came to him, they invited him to stay with them; and he stayed there two days. 41 Many more began to believe in him because of his word, 42 and they said to the woman, “We no longer believe because of your word; for we have heard for ourselves, and we know that this is truly the savior of the world.”(Q)
Return to Galilee. 43 [p]After the two days, he left there for Galilee. 44 [q](R)For Jesus himself testified that a prophet has no honor in his native place. 45 When he came into Galilee, the Galileans welcomed him, since they had seen all he had done in Jerusalem at the feast; for they themselves had gone to the feast.
Second Sign at Cana.[r] 46 (S)Then he returned to Cana in Galilee, where he had made the water wine. Now there was a royal official whose son was ill in Capernaum. 47 When he heard that Jesus had arrived in Galilee from Judea, he went to him and asked him to come down and heal his son, who was near death. 48 Jesus said to him, “Unless you people see signs and wonders, you will not believe.”(T) 49 The royal official said to him, “Sir, come down before my child dies.” 50 Jesus said to him, “You may go; your son will live.” The man believed what Jesus said to him and left.(U) 51 While he was on his way back, his slaves met him and told him that his boy would live. 52 He asked them when he began to recover. They told him, “The fever left him yesterday, about one in the afternoon.” 53 The father realized that just at that time Jesus had said to him, “Your son will live,” and he and his whole household came to believe. 54 [Now] this was the second sign Jesus did when he came to Galilee from Judea.(V)

- 4:1–42 Jesus in Samaria. The self-revelation of Jesus continues with his second discourse, on his mission to “half-Jews.” It continues the theme of replacement, here with regard to cult (Jn 4:21). Water (Jn 4:7–15) serves as a symbol (as at Cana and in the Nicodemus episode).
- 4:2 An editorial refinement of Jn 3:22, perhaps directed against followers of John the Baptist who claimed that Jesus imitated him.
- 4:4 He had to: a theological necessity; geographically, Jews often bypassed Samaria by taking a route across the Jordan.
- 4:5 Sychar: Jerome identifies this with Shechem, a reading found in Syriac manuscripts.
- 4:9 Samaritan women were regarded by Jews as ritually impure, and therefore Jews were forbidden to drink from any vessel they had handled.
- 4:10 Living water: the water of life, i.e., the revelation that Jesus brings; the woman thinks of “flowing water,” so much more desirable than stagnant well water. On John’s device of such misunderstanding, cf. note on Jn 3:3.
- 4:11 Sir: the Greek kyrios means “master” or “lord,” as a respectful mode of address for a human being or a deity; cf. Jn 4:19. It is also the word used in the Septuagint for the Hebrew ’adônai, substituted for the tetragrammaton YHWH.
- 4:20 This mountain: Gerizim, on which a temple was erected in the fourth century B.C. by Samaritans to rival Mount Zion in Jerusalem; cf. Dt 27:4 (Mount Ebal = the Jews’ term for Gerizim).
- 4:23 In Spirit and truth: not a reference to an interior worship within one’s own spirit. The Spirit is the spirit given by God that reveals truth and enables one to worship God appropriately (Jn 14:16–17). Cf. “born of water and Spirit” (Jn 3:5).
- 4:25 The expectations of the Samaritans are expressed here in Jewish terminology. They did not expect a messianic king of the house of David but a prophet like Moses (Dt 18:15).
- 4:26 I am he: it could also be translated “I am,” an Old Testament self-designation of Yahweh (Is 43:3, etc.); cf. Jn 6:20; 8:24, 28, 58; 13:19; 18:5–6, 8. See note on Mk 6:50.
- 4:27 Talking with a woman: a religious and social restriction that Jesus is pictured treating as unimportant.

- 4:43–54 Jesus’ arrival in Cana in Galilee; the second sign. This section introduces another theme, that of the life-giving word of Jesus. It is explicitly linked to the first sign (Jn 2:11). The royal official believes (Jn 4:50). The natural life given his son is a sign of eternal life.
- 4:44 Probably a reminiscence of a tradition as in Mk 6:4. Cf. Gospel of Thomas 31: “No prophet is acceptable in his village, no physician heals those who know him.”
- 4:46–54 The story of the cure of the royal official’s son may be a third version of the cure of the centurion’s son (Mt 8:5–13) or servant (Lk 7:1–10). Cf. also Mt 15:21–28; Mk 7:24–30.
