6 まもなくイエスはその地方を去り、弟子たちを連れて故郷の町ナザレに帰られました。 2-3 次の安息日に、イエスが会堂に出かけて話をされると、聴衆はその教えに驚きました。イエスのことを、自分たちと同じ、ただの田舎者だと思っていたからです。
「あれのどこがおれたちと違うというんだ。ただの大工のせがれじゃないか。母親はマリヤだし、ヤコブやヨセやユダやシモンは兄弟だ。妹たちだって、われわれとこの町に住んでいるじゃないか。」こうして、町の人たちはイエスに背を向けました。 4 そこで、イエスは言われました。「預言者（神に託されたことばを語る人）はどこででも尊敬されます。ただ、自分の故郷、親族、家族の中ではそうではありません。」 5 そのため、わずかの病人に手を置いて治されただけで、そこでは何一つ力あるわざを行うことができませんでした。 6 イエスは、ナザレの人たちの不信仰に驚かれました。
このことがあってから後、イエスは近辺の村々を巡り歩いて、教えられました。 7 また、十二人の弟子を呼び、悪霊を追い出す力を与えると、二人ずつ組にして送り出されました。 8-9 そして、携帯品は杖だけにし、食料も旅行袋も、お金も、はき替えのくつも、着替えの下着も持って行ってはいけないと注意されました。 10 また、言われました。「どこの村ででも、一軒の家に泊まるようにしなさい。あっちこっち家々を渡り歩いてはいけません。 11 もしその村が、あなたがたを門前払いにし、あなたがたのことばに耳を貸そうともしないなら、そこから出る時、足のちりを払い落としなさい。それは、その村を滅びるに任せたというしるしです。」
12 こうして弟子たちは出て行き、出会ったすべての人に、悔い改めて神に立ち返るようにと教え、 13 多くの悪霊を追い出し、オリーブ油を塗って大ぜいの病人を治しました。
バプテスマのヨハネの死
14 イエスの奇跡は至る所で話題になったので、まもなくヘロデ王の耳にも入りました。王は、バプテスマのヨハネが生き返ったのだと考えました。そして人々も、「だからこそ、イエスにはあんな奇跡ができるのだ」とうわさしました。 15 中には、預言者エリヤが生き返ったのだと言う者もあり、昔の偉大な預言者たちのような新しい預言者だ、と主張する者もありました。
16 しかしヘロデは、「いや、あれはわしが処刑したヨハネに違いない。ヨハネが死人の中から生き返ったのだ」と言いました。
17-18 実は、このヘロデが兵士たちに命じて、ヨハネを捕らえ、投獄したのです。ヨハネがヘロデに、兄嫁のヘロデヤを自分の妻にするのはよくないと批判したからです。 19 ヘロデヤは、その腹いせにヨハネを殺してやろうと思いましたが、ヘロデの許可なしには手出しができません。 20 ヘロデがヨハネを正しくきよい人物だと知って尊敬し、保護していたからです。ヘロデはヨハネと話をすると、決まって不安にかられましたが、それでも好んで聞いていました。
21 ところが、とうとうヘロデヤに絶好のチャンスが訪れました。それはヘロデの誕生日のことでした。王は、宮中の高官、高級将校、ガリラヤ地方の名士などを招待して、宴会を開きました。 22 その時、ヘロデヤの娘が居並ぶ客の前で舞をまい、一同をたいそう楽しませました。喜んだ王は、「ほしいものはないか。何なりと申せ」と言い、 23 その上、「国の半分をやってもよいぞ」と誓ったのです。
24 娘は出て行って、母親と相談しました。すると母親は、しめたとばかり、「バプテスマのヨハネの首をいただきたいと申し上げなさい」と入れ知恵しました。
25 娘は王の前に進み出ると、「今すぐ、バプテスマのヨハネの首を、盆に載せていただきとうございます」と言いました。
26 王は、困ったことになったと心を痛めましたが、誓ったことでもあり、また一同の手前もあって引っ込みがつきません。 27 やむなく護衛兵に、獄中のヨハネの首を切り、その首を持って来るように命じました。兵士は言われたとおり、 28 ヨハネの首を盆に載せて来て、ヘロデヤの娘に渡しました。すると、娘はさっそく、それを母親のところへ持って行きました。
29 ヨハネの弟子たちはそのことを聞くと、遺体を引き取り、墓に葬りました。
五つのパンと二匹の魚
30 さて、十二人の弟子は旅を終えてイエスのもとに帰り、自分たちのしてきたこと、また、行った先々で人々に教えたことなどを、くわしく報告しました。
31 イエスは弟子たちに言われました。「さあ、しばらく人ごみを避けて休みましょう。」イエスのもとには人の出入りが多く、食事をする暇もなかったからです。 32 彼らは舟に乗り、静かな場所へ出かけました。 33 ところが多くの群衆がそれと気づき、岸づたいに走って行って、一行が上陸するのを待ちかまえていました。 34 舟から上がられたイエスの前には、おびただしい数の人々が集まっていました。まるで、羊飼いのいない羊のような群衆を見て、イエスは深くあわれみ、いろいろなことを教え始められました。
35-36 午後も遅くなって、弟子たちがイエスのところに来ました。「先生。この人たちに、近くの村や農場へ行って、めいめいで食べ物を買うように言っていただけませんか。こんな寂しい所では、何もありません。それに時刻も遅いことですし……。」
37 しかし、イエスは言われました。「あなたがたが、この人たちに食べ物をあげるのです。」「ええっ！ いったい何を食べさせたらいいんですか、こんな大ぜいの人たちに。そんなことをしたら破産してしまいます。」
38 「手持ちの食べ物がどのくらいあるか、見て来なさい。」こう言われて、弟子たちは調べに行きました。その結果、パンが五つと魚が二匹あるだけでした。 39-40 イエスは、群衆に分かれて座るようにお命じになりました。まもなく人々は、五十人から百人ずつの組に分かれ、それぞれ緑の草の上に座りました。
41 イエスは五つのパンと二匹の魚を取り、天を見上げて感謝の祈りをささげると、パンをちぎって、人々に配るよう弟子たちに手渡されました。魚も同様になさいました。 42 群衆は、もうこれ以上は食べられないというほど十分に食べました。
43-44 その場で食事をしたのは、男だけでも五千人はいました。あとで残ったパン切れを拾い集めると、なんと十二のかごにいっぱいでした。
45 それからすぐ、イエスは弟子たちに、舟に戻り、先にベツサイダまで行くようにお命じになりました。あとで弟子たちと落ち合うつもりで、イエスだけその場に残り、群衆を解散させられたのです。
46 そのあと、イエスは山へ登られました。祈るためです。 47 夜になり、舟に乗った弟子たちは湖の真ん中までこぎ出していましたが、イエスはただ一人、陸地におられました。 48 ふと、ごらんになると、弟子たちは向かい風と波のためにこぎあぐね、危険にさらされています。夜明けの三時ごろ、イエスは水の上を歩いて彼らに近づき、そのままそばを通り過ぎようとされました。 49 ところが弟子たちは、湖上を歩くイエスを幽霊と見まちがい、恐怖のあまり大声をあげました。 50 みな、おびえきっています。イエスはすぐに、「安心しなさい。ほら、わたしです。こわがることはありません」と、声をおかけになりました。 51 イエスが舟に乗り込まれると、風はぴたりとやみました。弟子たちは訳がわからず、ただぼんやりと座っているだけでした。 52 前日の夕方、あれほどのパンの奇跡を目のあたりにしながら、弟子たちには、イエスがどんな方か、まだわかっていなかったのです。その心が堅く閉じていたからです。
53 一行は、湖の向こう岸のゲネサレに着き、舟をつなぎました。 54 彼らが舟から上がると、人々はすぐにイエスだと気づき、 55 その地方全体に、イエスがおいでになったことを告げ知らせたので、寝たままの病人が次々に、イエスのもとに運ばれて来ました。 56 そして、村でも町でも農場でも、人々は病人を広場に寝かせ、せめて着物のすそにでもさわらせてほしいと願うのです。さわった者はみな治りました。

Chúa Bị Khước Từ ở Na-xa-rét
(Mat 13:53-58; Lu 4:16-30)
6 Ngài rời nơi đó trở về thị trấn quê hương của Ngài, có các môn đồ Ngài đi theo. 2 Ðến ngày Sa-bát, Ngài bắt đầu giảng dạy trong hội đường. Nhiều người nghe đã ngạc nhiên và nói, “Do đâu người này có được những điều ấy? Người này được ban cho sự khôn ngoan gì thế? Làm sao tay người này có thể làm được những phép lạ như thế? 3 Ông ấy chẳng phải là người thợ mộc con trai của Ma-ry và là anh của Gia-cơ, Giô-sê, Giu-đa, và Si-môn sao? Chẳng phải các em gái của ông ấy đang sống giữa chúng ta sao?” Họ khó có thể chấp nhận Ngài.
4 Ðức Chúa Jesus nói với họ, “Một tiên tri không thiếu sự tôn trọng, ngoại trừ ở quê hương mình, giữa vòng bà con mình, và trong gia đình mình.” 5 Ngài không làm những việc quyền năng ở đó, ngoại trừ đặt tay trên vài người bịnh và chữa lành họ. 6 Ngài lấy làm lạ vì lòng vô tín của họ. Sau đó Ngài đến các làng quanh vùng để giảng dạy.

7 Ngài gọi mười hai sứ đồ đến và bắt đầu sai họ đi ra từng đôi một. Ngài ban cho họ quyền năng trên các tà linh ô uế. 8 Ngài bảo họ đừng đem gì theo cho cuộc hành trình, ngoại trừ một cây gậy; không bánh, không túi đi đường, không tiền bạc trong thắt lưng, 9 chỉ mang một đôi giày, và không mặc hai chiếc áo. 10 Ngài dặn họ, “Khi các ngươi được nhà nào tiếp, hãy ở đó cho đến khi rời nơi ấy. 11 Nơi nào không hoan nghinh các ngươi hoặc từ chối nghe lời các ngươi, khi rời nơi đó hãy phủi bụi đã dính dưới chân các ngươi để làm chứng nghịch lại họ.”
12 Vậy các môn đồ ra đi rao giảng rằng mọi người phải ăn năn. 13 Họ đuổi trừ nhiều quỷ, xức dầu trên nhiều người bịnh, và chữa lành những người ấy.
Giăng Báp-tít Qua Ðời

14 Vua Hê-rốt[a] được báo cáo việc ấy, vì danh tiếng của Ngài đã vang lừng khắp nơi. Có người tâu rằng, “Ấy là Giăng Báp-tít đã từ cõi chết sống lại nên mới có thể làm những phép lạ như thế.” 15 Nhưng những người khác bảo, “Ấy là Ê-li.” Những người khác nữa lại nói, “Ấy là một đấng tiên tri như các đấng tiên tri thời xưa.” 16 Nhưng khi nghe thế Hê-rốt nói, “Giăng, người ta đã chặt đầu, đã sống lại đó.”
17 Số là chính Hê-rốt đã sai người bắt Giăng đem xiềng trong ngục, vì vụ Hê-rô-đia vợ của Phi-líp anh ông, bởi ông đã lấy bà ấy làm vợ. 18 Vì Giăng đã nói với Hê-rốt, “Ngài lấy vợ của anh ngài là điều không hợp với đạo lý.” 19 Do đó bà Hê-rô-đia rất căm ghét Giăng và tìm cách giết ông, nhưng bà không thể thực hiện được, 20 vì Hê-rốt sợ Giăng. Ông biết Giăng là một người ngay lành và thánh thiện, nên ông bảo vệ Giăng. Mỗi lần được nghe Giăng nhắc nhở, ông rất áy náy, dầu vậy, ông vẫn thích nghe Giăng khuyên bảo.
21 Nhưng một ngày kia, cơ hội đã đến với bà, khi Hê-rốt tổ chức một dạ tiệc để mừng sinh nhật của ông và mời các triều thần, các tướng lãnh, và những người quyền quý trong miền Ga-li-lê đến dự. 22 Con gái của bà Hê-rô-đia vào và nhảy múa khiến cho Hê-rốt và quan khách dự tiệc mê mẩn tâm thần. Vua nói với cô gái ấy, “Hãy xin ta bất cứ điều gì ngươi muốn, ta sẽ ban cho.” 23 Ông lại long trọng thề với nàng, “Bất cứ điều gì ngươi xin, ta sẽ ban cho, dầu đến nửa nước cũng được.”
24 Cô ấy đi ra hỏi mẹ nàng, “Con nên xin gì?”
Bà ấy bảo, “Cái đầu của Giăng Báp-tít.”
25 Cô ấy liền vội vàng đi vào và tâu với vua, “Tiện nữ muốn bệ hạ cho tiện nữ cái đầu của Giăng Báp-tít để trên mâm ngay bây giờ.” 26 Vua rất ân hận, nhưng vì ông đã lỡ thề trước mặt các quan khách, ông không thể từ chối lời yêu cầu của nàng. 27 Vua liền sai một đao phủ đi và truyền đem đầu của Giăng đến. Viên đao phủ đi, chặt đầu Giăng trong ngục, 28 bưng đầu Giăng trên một cái mâm, và đem đến cô gái; cô gái bưng mâm đó đến mẹ cô. 29 Nghe tin ấy, các môn đồ của Giăng đến, lấy xác ông đem đi, và chôn trong một ngôi mộ.
Chúa Hóa Bánh cho Năm Ngàn Người Ăn
(Mat 14:13-21; Lu 9:10-17; Gg 6:1-14)
30 Các sứ đồ tụ về quanh Ðức Chúa Jesus và tường trình với Ngài mọi điều họ đã làm và đã dạy. 31 Ngài nói với họ, “Chính các ngươi hãy lánh vào một nơi vắng vẻ để nghỉ một lúc.” Vì có rất nhiều người tới lui đến nỗi họ không có thì giờ để ăn. 32 Vậy họ xuống thuyền và chèo đến một nơi hoang vắng. 33 Nhưng khi dân chúng thấy họ chèo thuyền đi và đoán biết nơi nào họ sẽ đến, nhiều người từ các thành đã chạy bộ đến đó trước họ.
34 Vì thế vừa ra khỏi thuyền, Ngài thấy một đoàn dân rất đông đang đợi sẵn. Ngài động lòng thương xót họ, vì họ như đàn chiên không có người chăn. Ngài bắt đầu dạy dỗ họ nhiều điều. 35 Khi ấy trời đã khá xế chiều, các môn đồ đến thưa với Ngài, “Nơi đây thật hoang vắng, và trời cũng đã quá xế chiều, 36 xin Thầy cho họ giải tán để họ có thể vào các thôn xóm và làng mạc quanh đây mua thức ăn cho họ.”
37 Ngài trả lời họ, “Chính các ngươi phải cho họ ăn.”
Họ đáp, “Chúng con phải đi và mua hai trăm đơ-na-ri[b] tiền bánh cho họ ăn sao?
38 Ngài hỏi họ, “Các ngươi có bao nhiêu bánh? Hãy đi và xem thử coi.”
Khi biết được rồi họ nói, “Thưa có năm cái bánh và hai con cá.”
39 Ngài truyền cho họ bảo mọi người ngồi xuống thành từng nhóm trên cỏ xanh. 40 Vậy họ ngồi xuống thành những nhóm một trăm người hoặc năm mươi người. 41 Ðoạn Ngài cầm năm cái bánh và hai con cá, ngước mắt lên trời, tạ ơn, bẻ bánh ra, và trao cho các môn đồ để họ phát cho dân. Ngài cũng phát hai con cá cho mọi người. 42 Ai nấy đều ăn và được no nê. 43 Họ gom lại được mười hai giỏ đầy bánh vụn và cá dư. 44 Số người ăn bánh là năm ngàn đàn ông.
Chúa Ði Bộ Trên Mặt Nước

45 Liền sau đó Ngài bảo các môn đồ xuống thuyền qua bờ bên kia trước, tức về hướng Thành Bết-sai-đa, trong khi Ngài ở lại để giải tán đám đông. 46 Sau khi tiễn chào họ, Ngài lên núi để cầu nguyện. 47 Tối đến thuyền đã ra giữa biển, còn Ngài đang ở trên đất một mình. 48 Ngài thấy các môn đồ chèo chống vất vả vì phải đương đầu với gió ngược; khoảng canh tư đêm ấy Ngài đi bộ trên mặt biển đến với họ, và dường như Ngài muốn qua mặt họ. 49 Khi thấy Ngài đi bộ trên mặt biển, họ tưởng là ma, nên la thét lên, 50 vì tất cả họ đều thấy Ngài và cực kỳ sợ hãi. Nhưng ngay lập tức Ngài bảo họ, “Hãy yên lòng, Ta đây, đừng sợ.”
51 Ngài bước lên thuyền với họ, và gió yên biển lặng. Các môn đồ vô cùng kinh ngạc; 52 số là họ vẫn chưa hiểu nổi phép lạ hóa bánh ra nhiều vừa rồi, vì lòng họ vẫn còn cứng cỏi.
Chúa Chữa Bịnh ở Ghê-nê-sa-rết
(Mat 14:34-36)
53 Khi họ đã qua bên kia biển, họ cho thuyền cập vào bờ ở Ghê-nê-sa-rết và thả neo tại đó. 54 Vừa khi họ ra khỏi thuyền, dân địa phương liền nhận ra Ngài. 55 Họ chạy đi báo tin khắp miền đó, và người ta bắt đầu khiêng những người bịnh nằm trên cáng đến với Ngài. Hễ họ nghe Ngài ở đâu, họ khiêng các bịnh nhân đến đó. 56 Bất cứ Ngài vào các làng mạc, thị trấn, hay thôn xóm nào, người ta đem những người đau yếu bịnh tật đến chợ ở nơi đó và xin Ngài cho họ được chạm vào viền áo Ngài. Tất cả ai chạm đến Ngài đều được chữa lành.

A Prophet Without Honor(A)
6 Jesus left there and went to his hometown,(B) accompanied by his disciples. 2 When the Sabbath came,(C) he began to teach in the synagogue,(D) and many who heard him were amazed.(E)
“Where did this man get these things?” they asked. “What’s this wisdom that has been given him? What are these remarkable miracles he is performing? 3 Isn’t this the carpenter? Isn’t this Mary’s son and the brother of James, Joseph,[a] Judas and Simon?(F) Aren’t his sisters here with us?” And they took offense at him.(G)
4 Jesus said to them, “A prophet is not without honor except in his own town, among his relatives and in his own home.”(H) 5 He could not do any miracles there, except lay his hands on(I) a few sick people and heal them. 6 He was amazed at their lack of faith.
Jesus Sends Out the Twelve(J)
Then Jesus went around teaching from village to village.(K) 7 Calling the Twelve to him,(L) he began to send them out two by two(M) and gave them authority over impure spirits.(N)
8 These were his instructions: “Take nothing for the journey except a staff—no bread, no bag, no money in your belts. 9 Wear sandals but not an extra shirt. 10 Whenever you enter a house, stay there until you leave that town. 11 And if any place will not welcome you or listen to you, leave that place and shake the dust off your feet(O) as a testimony against them.”
12 They went out and preached that people should repent.(P) 13 They drove out many demons and anointed many sick people with oil(Q) and healed them.
John the Baptist Beheaded(R)(S)
14 King Herod heard about this, for Jesus’ name had become well known. Some were saying,[b] “John the Baptist(T) has been raised from the dead, and that is why miraculous powers are at work in him.”
15 Others said, “He is Elijah.”(U)
And still others claimed, “He is a prophet,(V) like one of the prophets of long ago.”(W)
16 But when Herod heard this, he said, “John, whom I beheaded, has been raised from the dead!”
17 For Herod himself had given orders to have John arrested, and he had him bound and put in prison.(X) He did this because of Herodias, his brother Philip’s wife, whom he had married. 18 For John had been saying to Herod, “It is not lawful for you to have your brother’s wife.”(Y) 19 So Herodias nursed a grudge against John and wanted to kill him. But she was not able to, 20 because Herod feared John and protected him, knowing him to be a righteous and holy man.(Z) When Herod heard John, he was greatly puzzled[c]; yet he liked to listen to him.
21 Finally the opportune time came. On his birthday Herod gave a banquet(AA) for his high officials and military commanders and the leading men of Galilee.(AB) 22 When the daughter of[d] Herodias came in and danced, she pleased Herod and his dinner guests.
The king said to the girl, “Ask me for anything you want, and I’ll give it to you.” 23 And he promised her with an oath, “Whatever you ask I will give you, up to half my kingdom.”(AC)
24 She went out and said to her mother, “What shall I ask for?”
“The head of John the Baptist,” she answered.
25 At once the girl hurried in to the king with the request: “I want you to give me right now the head of John the Baptist on a platter.”
26 The king was greatly distressed, but because of his oaths and his dinner guests, he did not want to refuse her. 27 So he immediately sent an executioner with orders to bring John’s head. The man went, beheaded John in the prison, 28 and brought back his head on a platter. He presented it to the girl, and she gave it to her mother. 29 On hearing of this, John’s disciples came and took his body and laid it in a tomb.
Jesus Feeds the Five Thousand(AD)(AE)
30 The apostles(AF) gathered around Jesus and reported to him all they had done and taught.(AG) 31 Then, because so many people were coming and going that they did not even have a chance to eat,(AH) he said to them, “Come with me by yourselves to a quiet place and get some rest.”
32 So they went away by themselves in a boat(AI) to a solitary place. 33 But many who saw them leaving recognized them and ran on foot from all the towns and got there ahead of them. 34 When Jesus landed and saw a large crowd, he had compassion on them, because they were like sheep without a shepherd.(AJ) So he began teaching them many things.
35 By this time it was late in the day, so his disciples came to him. “This is a remote place,” they said, “and it’s already very late. 36 Send the people away so that they can go to the surrounding countryside and villages and buy themselves something to eat.”
37 But he answered, “You give them something to eat.”(AK)
They said to him, “That would take more than half a year’s wages[e]! Are we to go and spend that much on bread and give it to them to eat?”
38 “How many loaves do you have?” he asked. “Go and see.”
When they found out, they said, “Five—and two fish.”(AL)
39 Then Jesus directed them to have all the people sit down in groups on the green grass. 40 So they sat down in groups of hundreds and fifties. 41 Taking the five loaves and the two fish and looking up to heaven, he gave thanks and broke the loaves.(AM) Then he gave them to his disciples to distribute to the people. He also divided the two fish among them all. 42 They all ate and were satisfied, 43 and the disciples picked up twelve basketfuls of broken pieces of bread and fish. 44 The number of the men who had eaten was five thousand.
Jesus Walks on the Water(AN)(AO)
45 Immediately Jesus made his disciples get into the boat(AP) and go on ahead of him to Bethsaida,(AQ) while he dismissed the crowd. 46 After leaving them, he went up on a mountainside to pray.(AR)
47 Later that night, the boat was in the middle of the lake, and he was alone on land. 48 He saw the disciples straining at the oars, because the wind was against them. Shortly before dawn he went out to them, walking on the lake. He was about to pass by them, 49 but when they saw him walking on the lake, they thought he was a ghost.(AS) They cried out, 50 because they all saw him and were terrified.
Immediately he spoke to them and said, “Take courage! It is I. Don’t be afraid.”(AT) 51 Then he climbed into the boat(AU) with them, and the wind died down.(AV) They were completely amazed, 52 for they had not understood about the loaves; their hearts were hardened.(AW)
53 When they had crossed over, they landed at Gennesaret and anchored there.(AX) 54 As soon as they got out of the boat, people recognized Jesus. 55 They ran throughout that whole region and carried the sick on mats to wherever they heard he was. 56 And wherever he went—into villages, towns or countryside—they placed the sick in the marketplaces. They begged him to let them touch even the edge of his cloak,(AY) and all who touched it were healed.

2 And when the sabbath day was come, he began to teach in the synagogue: and many hearing him were astonished, saying, From whence hath this man these things? and what wisdom is this which is given unto him, that even such mighty works are wrought by his hands?
3 Is not this the carpenter, the son of Mary, the brother of James, and Joses, and of Juda, and Simon? and are not his sisters here with us? And they were offended at him.
4 But Jesus, said unto them, A prophet is not without honour, but in his own country, and among his own kin, and in his own house.
5 And he could there do no mighty work, save that he laid his hands upon a few sick folk, and healed them.
6 And he marvelled because of their unbelief. And he went round about the villages, teaching.
7 And he called unto him the twelve, and began to send them forth by two and two; and gave them power over unclean spirits;
8 And commanded them that they should take nothing for their journey, save a staff only; no scrip, no bread, no money in their purse:
9 But be shod with sandals; and not put on two coats.
10 And he said unto them, In what place soever ye enter into an house, there abide till ye depart from that place.
11 And whosoever shall not receive you, nor hear you, when ye depart thence, shake off the dust under your feet for a testimony against them. Verily I say unto you, It shall be more tolerable for Sodom and Gomorrha in the day of judgment, than for that city.
12 And they went out, and preached that men should repent.
13 And they cast out many devils, and anointed with oil many that were sick, and healed them.
14 And king Herod heard of him; (for his name was spread abroad:) and he said, That John the Baptist was risen from the dead, and therefore mighty works do shew forth themselves in him.
15 Others said, That it is Elias. And others said, That it is a prophet, or as one of the prophets.
16 But when Herod heard thereof, he said, It is John, whom I beheaded: he is risen from the dead.
17 For Herod himself had sent forth and laid hold upon John, and bound him in prison for Herodias' sake, his brother Philip's wife: for he had married her.
18 For John had said unto Herod, It is not lawful for thee to have thy brother's wife.
19 Therefore Herodias had a quarrel against him, and would have killed him; but she could not:
20 For Herod feared John, knowing that he was a just man and an holy, and observed him; and when he heard him, he did many things, and heard him gladly.
21 And when a convenient day was come, that Herod on his birthday made a supper to his lords, high captains, and chief estates of Galilee;
22 And when the daughter of the said Herodias came in, and danced, and pleased Herod and them that sat with him, the king said unto the damsel, Ask of me whatsoever thou wilt, and I will give it thee.
23 And he sware unto her, Whatsoever thou shalt ask of me, I will give it thee, unto the half of my kingdom.
24 And she went forth, and said unto her mother, What shall I ask? And she said, The head of John the Baptist.
25 And she came in straightway with haste unto the king, and asked, saying, I will that thou give me by and by in a charger the head of John the Baptist.
26 And the king was exceeding sorry; yet for his oath's sake, and for their sakes which sat with him, he would not reject her.
27 And immediately the king sent an executioner, and commanded his head to be brought: and he went and beheaded him in the prison,
28 And brought his head in a charger, and gave it to the damsel: and the damsel gave it to her mother.
29 And when his disciples heard of it, they came and took up his corpse, and laid it in a tomb.
30 And the apostles gathered themselves together unto Jesus, and told him all things, both what they had done, and what they had taught.
31 And he said unto them, Come ye yourselves apart into a desert place, and rest a while: for there were many coming and going, and they had no leisure so much as to eat.
32 And they departed into a desert place by ship privately.
33 And the people saw them departing, and many knew him, and ran afoot thither out of all cities, and outwent them, and came together unto him.
34 And Jesus, when he came out, saw much people, and was moved with compassion toward them, because they were as sheep not having a shepherd: and he began to teach them many things.
35 And when the day was now far spent, his disciples came unto him, and said, This is a desert place, and now the time is far passed:
36 Send them away, that they may go into the country round about, and into the villages, and buy themselves bread: for they have nothing to eat.
37 He answered and said unto them, Give ye them to eat. And they say unto him, Shall we go and buy two hundred pennyworth of bread, and give them to eat?
38 He saith unto them, How many loaves have ye? go and see. And when they knew, they say, Five, and two fishes.
39 And he commanded them to make all sit down by companies upon the green grass.
40 And they sat down in ranks, by hundreds, and by fifties.
41 And when he had taken the five loaves and the two fishes, he looked up to heaven, and blessed, and brake the loaves, and gave them to his disciples to set before them; and the two fishes divided he among them all.
42 And they did all eat, and were filled.
43 And they took up twelve baskets full of the fragments, and of the fishes.
44 And they that did eat of the loaves were about five thousand men.
45 And straightway he constrained his disciples to get into the ship, and to go to the other side before unto Bethsaida, while he sent away the people.
46 And when he had sent them away, he departed into a mountain to pray.
47 And when even was come, the ship was in the midst of the sea, and he alone on the land.
48 And he saw them toiling in rowing; for the wind was contrary unto them: and about the fourth watch of the night he cometh unto them, walking upon the sea, and would have passed by them.
49 But when they saw him walking upon the sea, they supposed it had been a spirit, and cried out:
50 For they all saw him, and were troubled. And immediately he talked with them, and saith unto them, Be of good cheer: it is I; be not afraid.
51 And he went up unto them into the ship; and the wind ceased: and they were sore amazed in themselves beyond measure, and wondered.
52 For they considered not the miracle of the loaves: for their heart was hardened.
53 And when they had passed over, they came into the land of Gennesaret, and drew to the shore.
54 And when they were come out of the ship, straightway they knew him,
55 And ran through that whole region round about, and began to carry about in beds those that were sick, where they heard he was.
56 And whithersoever he entered, into villages, or cities, or country, they laid the sick in the streets, and besought him that they might touch if it were but the border of his garment: and as many as touched him were made whole.
