ユダヤ人の間の問題
5 このころ、暴利を貪っている金持ちに対して、子どもを持つ親たちから、激しい抗議の声が上がりました。 2-4 事の起こりは、食べ物を買う金のなくなった家で、金持ちに子どもを売ったり、畑やぶどう園や家を抵当に入れたりする事態が生じてきたことです。税金を払うために限度いっぱいまで借金をして、売るものもなくなってしまった者もいました。 5 人々は、「彼らは私たちの同胞ではないか。彼らの子どもは、私たちの子どもも同然だ。それなのに、生きていくために、子どもを奴隷に売らなくてはならないとは。もはや売った娘を買い戻す金もなく、畑も抵当に取られてしまった」と訴えました。
6 この抗議を聞いて、私は非常な憤りを感じました。 7 しばらく考えたのち、裕福な官僚たちを厳しく責めることにしました。「いったい、君たちのやってることは何だ。イスラエル人を助ける条件として、抵当を取るなど、そんなことがよくもできたものだ。」そして、彼らの処分をするため、みなの前で裁判を開きました。 8 私はその法廷で、彼らを告発しました。「私たちはみな、遠い国での奴隷生活から引き揚げて来た者たちを援助しようと、できるだけのことをしてきた。それに対して、君たちは無理やり彼らを奴隷に戻そうとしている。私はいったい何度、彼らを買い戻せばよいのか。」彼らは、全く反論することができませんでした。
9 私は続けました。「君たちのしていることは、非常に恐ろしいことだ。いったい、神様を恐れる気持ちがあるのか。回りには、私たちを滅ぼそうとすきをうかがう敵がうごめいているではないか。 10 君たち以外の者はみな、同胞のユダヤ人には、利子を取らずに金や穀物を貸してやっているのだ。こんな高利貸しのようなまねはやめなさい。 11 畑、ぶどう園、オリーブ園、家をみな返し、証文を破りなさい。」
12 彼らはうなずき、土地を抵当に取ったり、子どもを売らせたりしないで同胞を助けると約束しました。そこで私は、祭司たちを召集し、正式に誓わせました。 13 約束を破った者には神からのろいが下るように、とも祈りました。「もしこの誓いを破ったら、神が君たちの家と暮らしを破綻させてしまわれるように。」人々は全員「アーメン」と叫んで、主をほめたたえました。金を持っている者たちは誓いを実行に移しました。
14 私についていえば、アルタシャスタ王の治世の第二十年から三十二年までの十二年間、ユダの総督を務めましたが、その間、副官ともどもイスラエル人からは、一銭も給料や援助を受け取りませんでした。 15 前任の総督は、食糧とぶどう酒、一日銀四十シェケルの手当を要求し、配下の者もやりたい放題で、住民をしいたげました。しかし神を恐れる私は、そのようなことはしませんでした。 16 私はひたすら城壁の工事に励み、土地の投機に手を出すことなど、絶対にしませんでした。部下たちにも、工事に専念するよう命じました。 17 そのうえ、百五十人のユダヤ人の役人の食いぶちは私がまかない、ほかに外国からの客のもてなしもしていたのです。 18 一日につき、雄牛一頭、肥えた羊六頭。また、おびただしい鶏が必要で、十日ごとに種々のぶどう酒も用意しました。それでも、新たに課税することはしませんでした。そうでなくても、国民の生活は苦しかったからです。 19 神様、この民に対して私のしたことをお心に留め、私を祝福してください。
Nehemiah 5
King James Version
5 And there was a great cry of the people and of their wives against their brethren the Jews.
2 For there were that said, We, our sons, and our daughters, are many: therefore we take up corn for them, that we may eat, and live.
3 Some also there were that said, We have mortgaged our lands, vineyards, and houses, that we might buy corn, because of the dearth.
4 There were also that said, We have borrowed money for the king's tribute, and that upon our lands and vineyards.
5 Yet now our flesh is as the flesh of our brethren, our children as their children: and, lo, we bring into bondage our sons and our daughters to be servants, and some of our daughters are brought unto bondage already: neither is it in our power to redeem them; for other men have our lands and vineyards.
6 And I was very angry when I heard their cry and these words.
7 Then I consulted with myself, and I rebuked the nobles, and the rulers, and said unto them, Ye exact usury, every one of his brother. And I set a great assembly against them.
8 And I said unto them, We after our ability have redeemed our brethren the Jews, which were sold unto the heathen; and will ye even sell your brethren? or shall they be sold unto us? Then held they their peace, and found nothing to answer.
9 Also I said, It is not good that ye do: ought ye not to walk in the fear of our God because of the reproach of the heathen our enemies?
10 I likewise, and my brethren, and my servants, might exact of them money and corn: I pray you, let us leave off this usury.
11 Restore, I pray you, to them, even this day, their lands, their vineyards, their oliveyards, and their houses, also the hundredth part of the money, and of the corn, the wine, and the oil, that ye exact of them.
12 Then said they, We will restore them, and will require nothing of them; so will we do as thou sayest. Then I called the priests, and took an oath of them, that they should do according to this promise.
13 Also I shook my lap, and said, So God shake out every man from his house, and from his labour, that performeth not this promise, even thus be he shaken out, and emptied. And all the congregation said, Amen, and praised the Lord. And the people did according to this promise.
14 Moreover from the time that I was appointed to be their governor in the land of Judah, from the twentieth year even unto the two and thirtieth year of Artaxerxes the king, that is, twelve years, I and my brethren have not eaten the bread of the governor.
15 But the former governors that had been before me were chargeable unto the people, and had taken of them bread and wine, beside forty shekels of silver; yea, even their servants bare rule over the people: but so did not I, because of the fear of God.
16 Yea, also I continued in the work of this wall, neither bought we any land: and all my servants were gathered thither unto the work.
17 Moreover there were at my table an hundred and fifty of the Jews and rulers, beside those that came unto us from among the heathen that are about us.
18 Now that which was prepared for me daily was one ox and six choice sheep; also fowls were prepared for me, and once in ten days store of all sorts of wine: yet for all this required not I the bread of the governor, because the bondage was heavy upon this people.
19 Think upon me, my God, for good, according to all that I have done for this people.
