37 กษัตริย์เนบูคัดเนสซาร์แห่งบาบิโลนทรงแต่งตั้งเศเดคียาห์โอรสโยสิยาห์ให้เป็นกษัตริย์ยูดาห์แทนเยโฮยาคีน[a]โอรสของเยโฮยาคิม 2 ทั้งเศเดคียาห์และข้าราชบริพาร ตลอดจนบรรดาประชากรของดินแดนนั้นไม่ได้ใส่ใจในพระวจนะขององค์พระผู้เป็นเจ้าซึ่งตรัสผ่านผู้เผยพระวจนะเยเรมีย์
3 แต่กษัตริย์เศเดคียาห์ทรงใช้ให้เยฮูคัลบุตรเชเลมิยาห์และปุโรหิตเศฟันยาห์บุตรมาอาเสอาห์มาขอร้องผู้เผยพระวจนะเยเรมีย์ว่า “โปรดอธิษฐานต่อพระยาห์เวห์พระเจ้าของเราเผื่อพวกเราด้วย”
4 ขณะนั้นเยเรมีย์ยังไม่ถูกขังคุก เขาจึงไปไหนมาไหนท่ามกลางประชาชนได้ตามใจชอบ 5 เมื่อกองทัพบาบิโลน[b]ซึ่งกำลังล้อมกรุงเยรูซาเล็มอยู่ได้ทราบข่าวว่ากองทัพของฟาโรห์เคลื่อนออกมาจากอียิปต์ก็ถอยทัพไปจากเยรูซาเล็ม
6 พระดำรัสขององค์พระผู้เป็นเจ้ามาถึงผู้เผยพระวจนะเยเรมีย์ว่า 7 “พระยาห์เวห์พระเจ้าแห่งอิสราเอลตรัสดังนี้ว่า จงไปบอกกษัตริย์ยูดาห์ผู้ซึ่งใช้พวกเจ้ามาถามเรานั้นว่า ‘กองทัพของฟาโรห์ซึ่งยกมาเพื่อสนับสนุนเจ้าจะกลับไปยังอียิปต์ดินแดนของตน 8 แล้วทัพบาบิโลนจะหวนกลับมาโจมตีกรุงนี้ จะยึดได้และจุดไฟเผา’
9 “องค์พระผู้เป็นเจ้าตรัสดังนี้ว่า อย่าหลอกตัวเองโดยคิดว่า ‘ชาวบาบิโลนจะไม่มายุ่งเกี่ยวกับเราอีก’ เปล่าเลย! 10 ถึงแม้ว่าเจ้าทำลายกองทัพบาบิโลนทั้งกองทัพที่มาโจมตีเจ้าจนเหลือแต่พวกที่บาดเจ็บนอนอยู่ในเต็นท์ เขาก็ยังจะออกมาเผากรุงนี้”
11 หลังจากที่กองทัพบาบิโลนถอนทัพไปจากเยรูซาเล็มเมื่อได้ยินเรื่องกองทัพของฟาโรห์ 12 เยเรมีย์ก็ออกเดินทางจากกรุงไปยังเขตแดนเบนยามินเพื่อรับส่วนแบ่งที่ดินของเขาในหมู่ประชาชนที่นั่น 13 แต่เมื่อเยเรมีย์มาถึงประตูเบนยามิน หัวหน้ายามชื่ออิรียาห์บุตรเชเลมิยาห์บุตรฮานันยาห์ ก็จับตัวเยเรมีย์ไว้และกล่าวว่า “ท่านคิดจะหนีไปเข้ากับพวกชาวบาบิโลน!”
14 เยเรมีย์กล่าวว่า “ไม่จริง! เราไม่ได้จะหนีไปเข้ากับพวกบาบิโลน” แต่อิรียาห์ไม่ฟังเสียง กลับจับกุมตัวเยเรมีย์ไปพบเจ้าหน้าที่ปกครอง 15 พวกเขาโกรธเยเรมีย์มากจึงให้เฆี่ยนตีและขังเขาไว้ในบ้านของราชเลขาโยนาธานซึ่งพวกเขาดัดแปลงให้เป็นคุก
16 เยเรมีย์ถูกขังไว้ในคุกมืดของห้องใต้ดินเป็นเวลานาน 17 ต่อมากษัตริย์เศเดคียาห์ทรงใช้คนมารับตัวเยเรมีย์ไปยังพระราชวัง แล้วตรัสถามเขาเป็นการส่วนพระองค์ว่า “มีพระดำรัสประการใดจากองค์พระผู้เป็นเจ้าบ้างหรือไม่?”
เยเรมีย์ทูลว่า “มี ฝ่าพระบาทจะถูกมอบไว้ในมือกษัตริย์บาบิโลน”
18 แล้วเยเรมีย์ทูลกษัตริย์เศเดคียาห์ว่า “ข้าพระบาททำผิดอะไรต่อฝ่าพระบาท ต่อข้าราชบริพาร และต่อประชาชนเหล่านี้หรือ? ฝ่าพระบาทจึงจับข้าพระบาทขังไว้ในคุก 19 ไหนล่ะบรรดาผู้พยากรณ์ที่บอกฝ่าพระบาทว่า ‘กษัตริย์บาบิโลนจะไม่มาโจมตีฝ่าพระบาทหรือดินแดนแห่งนี้’? 20 แต่บัดนี้ขอฝ่าพระบาทรับฟัง ข้าพระบาทขอวิงวอนว่าโปรดอย่าส่งข้าพระบาทกลับไปที่บ้านของราชเลขาโยนาธาน มิฉะนั้นข้าพระบาทต้องตายที่นั่น”
21 กษัตริย์เศเดคียาห์จึงบัญชาให้คุมตัวเยเรมีย์ไว้ที่ลานทหารรักษาพระองค์ และอนุมัติขนมปังจากถนนคนทำขนมปังให้ทุกวัน จนกระทั่งขนมปังในกรุงนั้นหมด เยเรมีย์ก็ยังถูกคุมตัวอยู่ที่นั่น

37 เนบูคัดเนสซาร์เป็นกษัตริย์ของบาบิโลน พระองค์ได้แต่งตั้งให้เศเดคียาห์ ขึ้นเป็นกษัตริย์ปกครองแผ่นดินยูดาห์ แทนกษัตริย์โคนิยาห์[a] ลูกชายของเยโฮยาคิม เศเดคียาห์เป็นลูกชายของกษัตริย์โยสิยาห์ 2 แต่กษัตริย์เศเดคียาห์ และผู้รับใช้ของพระองค์ รวมทั้งผู้คนในยูดาห์ ก็ไม่ยอมฟังถ้อยคำต่างๆของพระยาห์เวห์ ที่พระองค์ได้พูดผ่านมาทางเยเรมียาห์ผู้พูดแทนพระเจ้า
3 กษัตริย์เศเดคียาห์ส่งเยฮูคัลลูกชายของเชเลมิยาห์ พร้อมกับนักบวชเศฟันยาห์ ลูกชายของมาอาเสอาห์ ไปหาเยเรมียาห์ผู้พูดแทนพระเจ้า และบอกว่า “เยเรมียาห์ อธิษฐานต่อพระยาห์เวห์พระเจ้าของเรา แทนพวกเราด้วย”
4 ในเวลานั้นเยเรมียาห์ยังไปไหนมาไหนท่ามกลางผู้คนได้อย่างอิสระ พวกเขายังไม่ได้จับเยเรมียาห์ขังคุก 5 และตอนนี้กองทัพของฟาโรห์ก็ได้เคลื่อนทัพออกจากอียิปต์มาแล้ว และชาวบาบิโลนที่กำลังปิดล้อมเมืองเยรูซาเล็มอยู่รู้ข่าว ก็เลยถอนฐานที่มั่นออกไปจากเมืองเยรูซาเล็ม
6 แล้วถ้อยคำของพระยาห์เวห์ก็มาถึงเยเรมียาห์ผู้พูดแทนพระเจ้า 7 พระยาห์เวห์พระเจ้าแห่งอิสราเอลพูดว่า “เยฮูคัลและเศฟันยาห์ เรารู้ว่าเศเดคียาห์กษัตริย์ของยูดาห์ ได้ส่งให้พวกเจ้ามาร้องขอต่อเรา ให้ไปบอกกับเขาว่า กองทัพของฟาโรห์ที่กำลังออกจากอียิปต์เพื่อมาช่วยเจ้านั้น กำลังจะหันกลับไปอียิปต์แผ่นดินของพวกเขา 8 และชาวบาบิโลนก็จะกลับมาโจมตีเมืองเยรูซาเล็มอีก และพวกนั้นก็จะยึดเมืองเยรูซาเล็มและเผาเมืองทิ้ง” 9 พระยาห์เวห์พูดว่า “อย่าหลอกตัวเอง โดยพูดว่า ‘พวกบาบิโลนจะถอนไปแน่ๆ’ เพราะพวกเขาจะไม่ไปไหน 10 ถึงแม้ว่าพวกเจ้าจะทำให้กองทัพบาบิโลนทั้งกองที่กำลังต่อสู้กับเจ้าอยู่ ได้รับบาดเจ็บ และเหลือแต่พวกที่บาดเจ็บไว้ในเต็นท์ของพวกเขา พวกเขาก็จะลุกฮือขึ้นเผาเมืองนี้อยู่ดี”
11 เมื่อกองทัพบาบิโลนถอยทัพจากเมืองเยรูซาเล็มเพราะกองทัพของฟาโรห์บุกเข้ามา 12 เยเรมียาห์ก็ออกจากเมืองเยรูซาเล็มไปยังแผ่นดินเบนยามิน เพื่อไปรับส่วนแบ่งในมรดกที่ดินร่วมกับคนอื่นที่เหลืออยู่ที่นั่น 13 เมื่อเขามาถึงประตูเมืองเบนยามิน หัวหน้ายามรักษาประตูอยู่ที่นั่น เขามีชื่อว่าอิรียาห์ลูกชายของเชเลมิยาห์ ซึ่งเป็นลูกของ ฮานานิยาห์ อิรียาห์จับกุมตัวเยเรมียาห์ผู้พูดแทนพระเจ้า พร้อมกับบอกว่า “เจ้ากำลังจะไปหาพวกบาบิโลนนี่นา” 14 เยเรมียาห์ตอบว่า “ไม่จริง ผมไม่ได้ไปหาพวกบาบิโลน” แต่อิรียาห์ก็ไม่ฟังเยเรมียาห์ และจับตัวเยเรมียาห์ไปให้พวกเจ้านาย 15 พวกเจ้านายโกรธเยเรมียาห์ พวกเขาก็เลยทุบตีเขา จากนั้นก็จับเขาไปขังไว้ในคุกที่บ้านของโยนาธานผู้เป็นเลขานุการ เพราะพวกเขาทำบ้านหลังนั้นเป็นคุกไว้แล้ว
กษัตริย์เศเดคียาห์ปรึกษากับเยเรมียาห์
16 เยเรมียาห์ถูกจับขังไว้ในบ่อเก็บน้ำที่แห้ง แล้วก็อยู่ที่นั่นหลายวัน 17 หลังจากนั้นกษัตริย์เศเดคียาห์ก็ส่งคนมาเอาตัวไปพบกษัตริย์ แล้วกษัตริย์ก็ถามเขาในวังเป็นการลับๆว่า “มีข่าวสารอะไรจากพระยาห์เวห์บ้างไหม” เยเรมียาห์ก็ตอบว่า “มีครับ” และเขาก็พูดต่อไปว่า “ท่านจะถูกส่งให้ไปอยู่ในเงื้อมมือของกษัตริย์บาบิโลน” 18 จากนั้นเยเรมียาห์ก็พูดกับกษัตริย์เศเดคียาห์อีกว่า “ข้าพเจ้าทำผิดอะไรต่อพระองค์ หรือต่อผู้รับใช้ของพระองค์ หรือต่อคนพวกนี้หรือ พระองค์ถึงได้จับข้าพเจ้าขังคุก 19 แล้วพวกผู้พูดแทนพระเจ้าของพวกท่านหายไปไหนกันหมดแล้ว พวกที่ทำนายให้กับพระองค์ว่า ‘กษัตริย์แห่งบาบิโลนจะไม่มาโจมตีพวกท่านและแผ่นดินนี้’ 20 ข้าแต่กษัตริย์ ขอได้โปรดเมตตาข้าพเจ้าด้วยเถิด อย่าได้ส่งข้าพเจ้ากลับไปที่บ้านของโยนาธานเลขานุการนั้นเลย เพราะข้าพเจ้าจะต้องตายที่นั่นแน่ๆ”
21 ดังนั้นกษัตริย์เศเดคียาห์จึงออกคำสั่ง และพวกเขาก็ส่งเยเรมียาห์ไปอยู่ภายใต้การดูแลของทหารยามที่ลาน พวกเขาให้ขนมปังกับเยเรมียาห์ทุกวัน ขนมปังนี้มาจากถนนของพวกทำขนมปัง จนไม่มีขนมหลงเหลืออยู่ในเมืองอีกแล้ว และเยเรมียาห์ก็ได้อาศัยอยู่ในลานของทหารยามนั้น

Zedekiah’s Vain Hope(A)
37 Now King (B)Zedekiah the son of Josiah reigned instead of Coniah the son of Jehoiakim, whom Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon made king in the land of Judah. 2 (C)But neither he nor his servants nor the people of the land gave heed to the words of the Lord which He spoke by the prophet Jeremiah.
3 And Zedekiah the king sent Jehucal the son of Shelemiah, and (D)Zephaniah the son of Maaseiah, the priest, to the prophet Jeremiah, saying, (E)“Pray now to the Lord our God for us.” 4 Now Jeremiah was coming and going among the people, for they had not yet put him in prison. 5 Then (F)Pharaoh’s army came up from Egypt; and when the Chaldeans who were besieging Jerusalem heard news of them, they departed from Jerusalem.
6 Then the word of the Lord came to the prophet Jeremiah, saying, 7 “Thus says the Lord, the God of Israel, ‘Thus you shall say to the king of Judah, (G)who sent you to Me to inquire of Me: “Behold, Pharaoh’s army which has come up to help you will return to Egypt, to their own land. 8 (H)And the Chaldeans shall come back and fight against this city, and take it and burn it with fire.” ’ 9 Thus says the Lord: ‘Do not deceive yourselves, saying, “The Chaldeans will surely depart from us,” for they will not depart. 10 (I)For though you had defeated the whole army of the Chaldeans who fight against you, and there remained only wounded men among them, they would rise up, every man in his tent, and burn the city with fire.’ ”
Jeremiah Imprisoned
11 And it happened, when the army of the Chaldeans left the siege of Jerusalem for fear of Pharaoh’s army, 12 that Jeremiah went out of Jerusalem to go into the land of Benjamin to claim his property there among the people. 13 And when he was in the Gate of Benjamin, a captain of the guard was there whose name was Irijah the son of Shelemiah, the son of Hananiah; and he seized Jeremiah the prophet, saying, “You are defecting to the Chaldeans!”
14 Then Jeremiah said, [a]“False! I am not defecting to the Chaldeans.” But he did not listen to him.
So Irijah seized Jeremiah and brought him to the princes. 15 Therefore the princes were angry with Jeremiah, and they struck him (J)and put him in prison in the (K)house of Jonathan the scribe. For they had made that the prison.
16 When Jeremiah entered (L)the dungeon and the cells, and Jeremiah had remained there many days, 17 then Zedekiah the king sent and took him out. The king asked him secretly in his house, and said, “Is there any word from the Lord?”
And Jeremiah said, “There is.” Then he said, “You shall be (M)delivered into the hand of the king of Babylon!”
18 Moreover Jeremiah said to King Zedekiah, “What offense have I committed against you, against your servants, or against this people, that you have put me in prison? 19 Where now are your prophets who prophesied to you, saying, ‘The king of Babylon will not come against you or against this land’? 20 Therefore please hear now, O my lord the king. Please, let my petition be accepted before you, and do not make me return to the house of Jonathan the scribe, lest I die there.”
21 Then Zedekiah the king commanded that they should commit Jeremiah (N)to the court of the prison, and that they should give him daily a piece of bread from the bakers’ street, (O)until all the bread in the city was gone. Thus Jeremiah remained in the court of the prison.

37 Zedekiah(A) son of Josiah was made king(B) of Judah by Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon; he reigned in place of Jehoiachin[a](C) son of Jehoiakim. 2 Neither he nor his attendants nor the people of the land paid any attention(D) to the words the Lord had spoken through Jeremiah the prophet.
3 King Zedekiah, however, sent(E) Jehukal(F) son of Shelemiah with the priest Zephaniah(G) son of Maaseiah to Jeremiah the prophet with this message: “Please pray(H) to the Lord our God for us.”
4 Now Jeremiah was free to come and go among the people, for he had not yet been put in prison.(I) 5 Pharaoh’s army had marched out of Egypt,(J) and when the Babylonians[b] who were besieging Jerusalem heard the report about them, they withdrew(K) from Jerusalem.(L)
6 Then the word of the Lord came to Jeremiah the prophet: 7 “This is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says: Tell the king of Judah, who sent you to inquire(M) of me, ‘Pharaoh’s army, which has marched(N) out to support you, will go back to its own land, to Egypt.(O) 8 Then the Babylonians will return and attack this city; they will capture(P) it and burn(Q) it down.’
9 “This is what the Lord says: Do not deceive(R) yourselves, thinking, ‘The Babylonians will surely leave us.’ They will not! 10 Even if you were to defeat the entire Babylonian[c] army that is attacking you and only wounded men were left in their tents, they would come out and burn(S) this city down.”
11 After the Babylonian army had withdrawn(T) from Jerusalem because of Pharaoh’s army, 12 Jeremiah started to leave the city to go to the territory of Benjamin to get his share of the property(U) among the people there. 13 But when he reached the Benjamin Gate,(V) the captain of the guard, whose name was Irijah son of Shelemiah, the son of Hananiah, arrested him and said, “You are deserting to the Babylonians!”(W)
14 “That’s not true!” Jeremiah said. “I am not deserting to the Babylonians.” But Irijah would not listen to him; instead, he arrested(X) Jeremiah and brought him to the officials. 15 They were angry with Jeremiah and had him beaten(Y) and imprisoned(Z) in the house(AA) of Jonathan the secretary, which they had made into a prison.
16 Jeremiah was put into a vaulted cell in a dungeon, where he remained a long time. 17 Then King Zedekiah sent(AB) for him and had him brought to the palace, where he asked(AC) him privately,(AD) “Is there any word from the Lord?”
“Yes,” Jeremiah replied, “you will be delivered(AE) into the hands of the king of Babylon.”
18 Then Jeremiah said to King Zedekiah, “What crime(AF) have I committed against you or your attendants or this people, that you have put me in prison? 19 Where are your prophets(AG) who prophesied to you, ‘The king of Babylon will not attack you or this land’? 20 But now, my lord the king, please listen. Let me bring my petition before you: Do not send me back to the house of Jonathan the secretary, or I will die there.”(AH)
21 King Zedekiah then gave orders for Jeremiah to be placed in the courtyard of the guard and given a loaf of bread from the street of the bakers each day until all the bread(AI) in the city was gone.(AJ) So Jeremiah remained in the courtyard of the guard.(AK)
