8 இயேசுவோ ஒலிவ மலைக்குப் போனார். 2 மறுநாள் அதிகாலையில் அவர் திரும்பவும் தேவாலயத்துக்குப் போனார். அனைவரும் இயேசுவிடம் வந்தனர். இயேசு உட்கார்ந்து மக்களுக்கு உபதேசித்தார்.
3 வேதபாரகரும், பரிசேயரும் ஒரு பெண்ணை அவரிடம் கொண்டுவந்தனர். அவள் விபசாரம் செய்ததற்காகப் பிடிக்கப்பட்டவள். அவளை மக்களுக்கு முன்னால் நிற்கும்படி யூதர்கள் வற்புறுத்தினர். 4 அவர்கள் இயேசுவிடம், “போதகரே, இந்தப் பெண் ஒருவனிடம் கள்ளத்தனமாக உறவுகொண்டிருந்தபோது கண்டுபிடிக்கப்பட்டாள். 5 மோசேயின் சட்டப்படி இவ்வாறு பாவம் செய்கிற ஒவ்வொரு பெண்ணையும் கல் எறிந்து கொல்லவேண்டும். நாங்கள் என்ன செய்யவேண்டும் என்று நீர் சொல்கிறீர்?” என்று கேட்டனர்.
6 யூதர்கள் இந்தக் கேள்வியை இயேசுவைச் சோதிப்பதற்காகக் கேட்டனர். இயேசுவின் மீது ஏதாவது குற்றம் சுமத்தவே அவர்கள் விரும்பினர். ஆனால் இயேசுவோ குனிந்து தரையில் தன் விரலால் ஏதோ எழுதிக்கொண்டிருந்தார். 7 யூதத் தலைவர்கள் அதே கேள்வியை இயேசுவிடம் தொடர்ந்து கேட்டுக்கொண்டிருந்தனர். ஆகையால் இயேசு எழுந்து நின்று, “பாவமே செய்யாதவன் எவனாவது இங்கே இருக்கிறானா? இருந்தால் பாவம் செய்யாத அந்த மனிதன் இவள் மீது முதல் கல்லை எறியட்டும்” என்றார். 8 பிறகு இயேசு மறுபடியும் கீழே குனிந்து தரையில் ஏதோ எழுத ஆரம்பித்தார்.
9 இயேசுவின் வார்த்தைகளைக் கேட்ட மக்கள் ஒவ்வொருவராக விலகிப் போயினர். முதலில் முதியவர்கள் விலகினர்; பிறகு மற்றவர்கள் விலகினர். அந்தப் பெண்ணோடு இயேசு மட்டும் தனியாக விடப்பட்டார். அவள் அவருக்கு முன்னால் நின்றுகொண்டிருந்தாள். 10 இயேசு அவளை ஏறிட்டுப்பார்த்து, “பெண்ணே, எல்லோரும் போய்விட்டார்கள். ஒருவனும் உன்னைக் குற்றவாளி எனத் தீர்ப்பளிக்கவில்லையா?” என்று கேட்டார்.
11 அதற்கு அவள், “ஆண்டவரே, எவரும் என்னைத் தண்டனைக்குட்படுத்தித் தீர்ப்பளிக்கவில்லை” என்றாள்.
பிறகு இயேசு, “நானும் உனக்குத் தீர்ப்பளிக்கவில்லை. இப்பொழுது நீ போகலாம், ஆனால் மறுபடியும் பாவம் செய்யாதே” என்றார்.
இயேசுவே உலகத்தின் ஒளி
12 மீண்டும் இயேசு மக்களோடு பேசினார். அவர், “நானே உலகத்துக்கு ஒளி. என்னைப் பின்பற்றி வருகிற எவனும் ஒருபோதும் இருளில் வாழமாட்டான். அவன் வாழ்வைத் தருகிற ஒளியைப் பெறுவான்” என்றார்.
13 ஆனால் பரிசேயர்கள் இயேசுவிடம், “உன்னைக்குறித்து நீ பேசும்போது நீ சொல்வதை உண்மையென்று நீ மாத்திரமே கூறுகிறாய். ஆகையால் நீ சொல்லுகின்றவற்றை நாங்கள் ஒத்துக் கொள்ளமுடியாது” என்றனர்.
14 அதற்கு இயேசு, “ஆம், என்னைப்பற்றி நானே பேசிக்கொண்டிருக்கிறேன். ஆனால் நான் சொல்லுகின்றவற்றை மக்கள் நம்ப முடியும். ஏனெனில் நான் எங்கேயிருந்து வந்தேன் என்பது எனக்குத் தெரியும். அதோடு எங்கே போகிறேன் என்றும் எனக்குத் தெரியும். நான் உங்களைப் போன்றவன் இல்லை. நான் எங்கிருந்து வந்தேன் என்றும் எங்கே போகிறேன் என்றும் உங்களுக்குத் தெரியாது. 15 சாதாரணமாக ஒருவனைப் பார்த்து கணிக்கிற விதத்திலேயே நீங்கள் என்னைப்பற்றி கணிக்கிறீர்கள். நான் எவரைப்பற்றியும் கணிப்பதில்லை. 16 ஆனால் நான் கணிக்கும்போது என் கணிப்பு உண்மையுள்ளதாக இருக்கும். ஏனென்றால் தீர்ப்பளிக்கும் காலத்தில் நான் தனியாளாக இல்லை. என்னை அனுப்பிய என் பிதா என்னோடு இருக்கிறார். 17 இரண்டு சாட்சிகள் ஒரே உண்மையைச் சொன்னால் உங்கள் சட்டம் உண்மைதான் என்று ஏற்றுக்கொள்கிறது. 18 நானும் என்னைப்பற்றி சொல்லுகிற ஒரு சாட்சி, அத்துடன் என்னை அனுப்பிய என் பிதாவும் எனது இன்னுமொரு சாட்சி” என்றார்.
19 மக்கள் அவரிடம் “உன் பிதா எங்கே இருக்கிறார்?” என்று கேட்டார்கள். “நீங்கள் என்னைப் பற்றியும் என் பிதாவைப்பற்றியும் அறியமாட்டீர்கள். ஆனால் நீங்கள் என்னை அறிந்துகொண்டால் என் பிதாவையும் அறிந்துகொள்வீர்கள்” என்று பதிலுரைத்தார். 20 இயேசு தேவாலயத்தில் உபதேசம் செய்யும்பொழுது இவற்றைச் சொன்னார். எல்லோரும் பணம் செலுத்துகிற இடத்தில் இயேசு இருந்தார். ஆனால் எவரும் அவரைக் கைதுசெய்யவில்லை. இயேசுவிற்கு அந்த வேளை இன்னும் வரவில்லை.
யூதர்களின் அறியாமை
21 மீண்டும் இயேசு மக்களிடம், “நான் உங்களை விட்டுப் போகிறேன். நீங்கள் என்னைத் தேடுவீர்கள். நீங்கள் உங்கள் பாவங்களோடு சாவீர்கள். நான் போகிற இடத்துக்கு உங்களால் வரமுடியாது” என்றார்.
22 எனவே யூதர்கள் தங்களுக்குள், “இயேசு தன்னைத்தானே கொன்றுகொள்வாரா? அதனால்தான் நான் போகிற இடத்துக்கு உங்களால் வர முடியாது என்று கூறினாரா?” என்று கேட்டுக்கொண்டனர்.
23 அந்த யூதர்களைப் பார்த்து இயேசு, “நீங்கள் கீழே இருந்து வந்தவர்கள். ஆனால் நான் மேலே இருந்து வந்தவன். நீங்கள் இந்த உலகத்துக்கு உரியவர்கள். ஆனால் நான் இந்த உலகத்தைச் சார்ந்தவன் அல்லன். 24 நீங்கள் உங்கள் பாவங்களிலேயே மரிப்பீர்கள் என்று நான் சொல்லியிருக்கிறேன். ஆம். நானே[a] அவர் என்பதை நம்பாவிட்டால் உங்கள் பாவங்களோடேயே நீங்கள் மரணமடைவீர்கள்.”
25 அதற்கு யூதர்கள், “நீங்கள் யார்?” என்று கேட்டார்கள்.
இயேசுவோ அவர்களிடம், “நான் ஆரம்பத்திலேயே உங்களுக்குச் சொல்லியவர்தான். 26 உங்களைப்பற்றிச் சொல்ல என்னிடம் நிறைய செய்திகள் உள்ளன. நான் உங்களை நியாயம் தீர்க்கவும் முடியும். என்னை அனுப்பினவரிடமிருந்து கேட்டவற்றையே நான் மக்களுக்குச் சொல்கிறேன். அவர் உண்மையைப் பேசுகிறவர்” என்றார்.
27 இயேசு யாரைப்பற்றி பேசிக்கொண்டிருக்கிறார் என்று யூதர்கள் அறிந்துகொள்ள முடியாமல் இருந்தனர். இயேசு அவர்களிடம் பிதாவைப்பற்றி கூறிக்கொண்டிருந்தார். 28 எனவே இயேசு மக்களிடம், “நீங்கள் மனித குமாரனைக் கொல்லும்போது நான்தான் என்று அறிந்துகொள்வீர்கள். அத்துடன் நான் இதுவரை செய்த செயல்களை என் சொந்த அதிகாரத்தில் செய்யவில்லை என்பதையும் அறிவீர்கள். பிதா எனக்குச் சொன்னவற்றையே நான் உங்களுக்குச் சொன்னேன் என்பதையும் அறிந்துகொள்வீர்கள். 29 என்னை அனுப்பிய ஒருவர் எப்போதும் என்னோடேயே இருக்கிறார். அவருக்கு விருப்பமானவற்றையே நான் எப்போதும் செய்துகொண்டிருக்கிறேன். எனவே, அவர் என்னைத் தனியாக விட்டுவிடவில்லை” என்றார். 30 இவ்வாறு இயேசு சொல்லிக்கொண்டிருந்தபோது ஏராளமான மக்கள் அவரிடம் விசுவாசம் வைத்தனர்.
பாவத்திலிருந்து விடுதலை
31 இயேசு தன்மீது நம்பிக்கை வைத்த யூதர்களைப் பார்த்து, “நீங்கள் என் உபதேசத்தைக் கைக்கொண்டு வந்தால், நீங்கள் உண்மையில் எனது சீஷர்களாக இருப்பீர்கள். 32 பின்னர் நீங்கள் உண்மையை அறிந்துகொள்வீர்கள். அந்த உண்மை உங்களுக்கு விடுதலையைத் தரும்” என்றார்.
33 “நாங்கள் ஆபிரகாமின் மக்கள். நாங்கள் ஒருபோதும் அடிமைகளாய் இருந்ததில்லை. ஆகவே நாங்கள் விடுதலை பெறுவோம் என்று ஏன் சொல்கிறீர்?” என்று யூதர்கள் கேட்டனர்.
34 அதற்குப் பதிலாக, “நான் உங்களுக்கு உண்மையைக் கூறுகிறேன், பாவம் செய்கிற ஒவ்வொருவனும் அடிமைதான். பாவமே அவனது எஜமானன். 35 ஓர் அடிமை எப்பொழுதும் ஒரு குடும்பத்தில் நிலையாக இருக்கமாட்டான். குமாரன் என்றென்றும் குடும்பத்தில் நிலைத்திருக்கிறார். 36 எனவே குமாரன் உங்களை விடுதலை செய்தால் நீங்கள் உண்மையான விடுதலையைப் பெறுவீர்கள். 37 நீங்கள் ஆபிரகாமின் பிள்ளைகள் என்று எனக்குத் தெரிகிறது. ஆனால் நீங்கள் என்னைக் கொல்ல விரும்புகிறீர்கள். ஏனென்றால் நீங்கள் என் உபதேசத்தை ஏற்றுக்கொள்ளவில்லை. 38 என் பிதா எனக்குக் காட்டியவற்றையே நான் உங்களுக்குச் சொல்லிக்கொண்டிருக்கிறேன். ஆனால் உங்கள் பிதா உங்களுக்குச் சொன்னபடியே செய்துகொண்டிருக்கிறீர்கள்” என்றார்.
39 “எங்கள் பிதா ஆபிரகாம்தான்” என்றனர் யூதர்கள். இயேசு அவர்களுக்கு விடையாக “நீங்கள் உண்மையிலேயே ஆபிரகாமின் பிள்ளைகள் என்றால் அவர் செய்தவற்றையே நீங்களும் செய்ய வேண்டும். 40 நான் தேவனிடமிருந்து கேட்ட உண்மையை உங்களுக்குச் சொல்லுகிற மனிதன். ஆனால் நீங்கள் என்னைக் கொல்ல முயலுகிறீர்கள். ஆபிரகாம் இதுபோல் எதுவும் செய்யவில்லை. 41 ஆகையால் நீங்கள் உங்கள் சொந்தப் பிதா செய்ததையே செய்கிறீர்கள்” என்றார்.
ஆனால் யூதர்கள், “எங்கள் பிதா யாரென்று தெரிந்துகொள்ள இயலாத குழந்தைகள் அல்ல நாங்கள். தேவனே எங்கள் பிதா. எங்களுக்குரிய ஒரே பிதாவும் அவரே” என்றனர்.
42 இயேசு அவர்களிடம், “தேவன்தான் உங்களது உண்மையான பிதா என்றால் நீங்கள் என்மீது அன்பு செலுத்தியிருப்பீர்கள். நான் தேவனிடமிருந்து வந்தேன். இப்பொழுது இங்கே இருக்கிறேன். நான் என் சொந்த அதிகாரத்தின் பேரில் வரவில்லை. தேவன் என்னை அனுப்பினார். 43 நான் சொல்லுகிறவற்றையெல்லாம் உங்களால் புரிந்துகொள்ள முடியாது. ஏனென்றால் என் உபதேசத்தை நீங்கள் ஏற்றுக்கொள்ளவில்லை. 44 பிசாசே உங்கள் பிதாவாயிருக்கிறான். நீங்கள் அவனுக்கு உரியவர்கள். அவனுக்கு விருப்பமானவற்றையே நீங்கள் செய்யவிரும்புகிறீர்கள். தொடக்கம் முதலே பிசாசானவன் கொலைகாரனாக இருக்கிறான். அவன் உண்மைக்கு எதிரானவன். அவனிடம் உண்மை இல்லை. அவன் அவனால் சொல்லப்படுகிற பொய்யைப் போன்றவன். அவன் ஒரு பொய்யன். அவன் பொய்களின் பிதா.
45 “நான் உண்மையைப் பேசுகிறேன். அதனால்தான் நீங்கள் என்னை நம்புவதில்லை. 46 உங்களில் எவராவது ஒருவர் நான் பாவம் செய்தவன் என்று நிரூபிக்க இயலுமா? நான் சொல்வது உண்மையாக இருக்கும்போது என்னை ஏன் நம்பாமல் இருக்கிறீர்கள்? 47 தேவனைச் சேர்ந்த எவனும் தேவனின் வார்த்தைகளை ஏற்றுக்கொள்கிறான். ஆனால் நீங்கள் தேவனின் வார்த்தைகளை ஏற்றுக்கொள்வதில்லை. ஏனென்றால் நீங்கள் தேவனைச் சார்ந்தவர்கள் இல்லை” என்றார்.
இயேசுவும்-ஆபிரகாமும்
48 யூதர்கள் இயேசுவிடம், “நாங்கள் உன்னை சமாரியன் என்று சொல்கிறோம். பிசாசு உன்னிடம் புகுந்ததால் நீ உளறுகிறாய் என்றும் சொல்கிறோம். நாங்கள் சொல்வது சரிதானே?” என்று கேட்டனர்.
49 “என்னிடம் எந்தப் பிசாசும் இல்லை. நான் என் பிதாவுக்கு மகிமை உண்டாக்குகிறேன். ஆனால் நீங்கள் எனக்கு மகிமையை அளிப்பதில்லை. 50 நான் எனக்கு மகிமையைச் சேர்த்துக்கொள்ள முயன்று கொண்டிருக்கவில்லை. இந்த மகிமைக்குரியவர் ஒருவர் இருக்கிறார். அவரே நீதிபதி. 51 நான் உங்களுக்கு உண்மையைக் கூறுகிறேன். எவனொருவன் என் உபதேசத்துக்கு கீழ்ப்படிகிறானோ அவன் ஒருபோதும் இறந்துபோவதில்லை” என்றார் இயேசு.
52 யூதர்களோ இயேசுவிடம், “உனக்குப் பிசாசு பிடித்திருக்கிறது என்பது இப்பொழுது உறுதியாயிற்று. ஆபிரகாமும் தீர்க்கதரிசிகளும்கூட இறந்துபோய்விட்டார்கள். ஆனால் நீயோ, ‘என் உபதேசத்துக்குக் கீழ்ப்படிகிறவன் ஒருபோதும் இறந்துபோவதில்லை’ என்று கூறுகிறாய். 53 எங்கள் பிதா ஆபிரகாமைவிடப் பெரியவன் என்று நீ உன்னை நினைத்துக்கொள்கிறாயா? ஆபிரகாம் இறந்துபோனார். தீர்க்கதரிசிகளும் இறந்துபோயினர். உன்னை நீ யாரென்று நினைத்துக்கொண்டிருக்கிறாய்?” எனக் கேட்டனர்.
54 இயேசு அவர்களிடம், “எனக்கு நானே மகிமை அளித்துக்கொண்டால் அது வீணாகிவிடும். என் பிதா எனக்கு மகிமை அளித்துக்கொண்டிருக்கிறார். அவர் உங்கள் தேவன் என்று நீங்கள் சொல்லிக்கொள்கிறீர்கள். 55 ஆனால் அவரை நீங்கள் உண்மையில் அறிந்து கொள்ளவில்லை. நான் அவரை அறிகிறேன். நான் அவரை அறியேன் என்று சொன்னால், நான் உங்களைப் போன்றே ஒரு பொய்யனாக இருப்பேன். ஆனால் அவரை நான் அறிவேன். அவர் சொன்னவற்றுக்குக் கீழ்ப்படிகிறேன். 56 உங்கள் தந்தையாகிய ஆபிரகாம் நான் வந்த நாளைக் காண்பேன் என்று மகிழ்ச்சியடைந்தார். அவர் அந்த நாளைக் கண்டு மகிழ்ச்சியும் அடைந்தார்” என்றார்.
57 யூதர்கள் இயேசுவிடம், “என்ன சொன்னாய்? நீ ஒருபோதும் ஆபிரகாமைப் பார்த்திருக்க முடியாது. உனக்கு இன்னும் ஐம்பது வயதுகூட ஆகவில்லையே!” என்று கேட்டனர்.
58 “நான் உங்களுக்கு உண்மையைக் கூறுகிறேன், ஆபிரகாம் பிறப்பதற்கு முன்பே நான் இருக்கிறேன்” என்றார் இயேசு. 59 இயேசு இதைச் சொன்னதும் மக்கள் அவர் மீதுக் கல் எறிவதற்குக் கற்களைப் பொறுக்கினார்கள். ஆனால் இயேசு மறைந்து அந்த தேவாலயத்தை விட்டு விலகிப்போனார்.

8 1 pero Jesús se fue al monte de los Olivos. 2 Al amanecer se presentó de nuevo en el Templo. Toda la gente se le acercó, y él se sentó a enseñarles. 3 Entonces, los maestros de la Ley y los fariseos llevaron a una mujer sorprendida en adulterio y, poniéndola en medio del grupo, 4 dijeron a Jesús:
—Maestro, a esta mujer se le ha sorprendido en el acto mismo de adulterio. 5 En la Ley Moisés nos ordenó apedrear a tales mujeres. ¿Tú qué dices?
6 Con esta pregunta le estaban tendiendo una trampa, para tener de qué acusarlo. Pero Jesús se inclinó y con el dedo comenzó a escribir en el suelo. 7 Y como ellos lo acosaban a preguntas, Jesús se incorporó y les dijo:
—Aquel de ustedes que esté libre de pecado, que tire la primera piedra.
8 E inclinándose de nuevo, siguió escribiendo en el suelo. 9 Al oír esto, se fueron retirando uno tras otro, comenzando por los más viejos, hasta dejar a Jesús solo con la mujer, que aún seguía allí. 10 Entonces él se incorporó y le preguntó:
—Mujer, ¿dónde están?[a] ¿Ya nadie te condena?
11 —Nadie, Señor.
Jesús dijo:
—Tampoco yo te condeno. Ahora vete, y no vuelvas a pecar.
Validez del testimonio de Jesús
12 Una vez más Jesús se dirigió a la gente y dijo:
—Yo soy la luz del mundo. El que me sigue no andará en oscuridad, sino que tendrá la luz de la vida.
13 —Tú te presentas como tu propio testigo —alegaron los fariseos—, así que tu testimonio no es válido.
14 —Aunque yo sea mi propio testigo —respondió Jesús—, mi testimonio es válido, porque sé de dónde he venido y a dónde voy. Pero ustedes no saben de dónde vengo ni a dónde voy. 15 Ustedes juzgan según criterios humanos; yo, en cambio, no juzgo a nadie. 16 Y si lo hago, mis juicios son válidos porque no los emito por mi cuenta, sino en unión con el Padre que me envió. 17 En la Ley de ustedes está escrito que el testimonio de dos personas es válido. 18 Yo soy testigo de mí mismo y el Padre que me envió también da testimonio de mí.
19 Ellos preguntaron:
—¿Dónde está tu padre?
Jesús respondió:
—Ustedes no me conocen a mí ni a mi Padre. Si me conocieran, también conocerían a mi Padre.
20 Estas palabras las dijo Jesús en el lugar donde se depositaban las ofrendas, mientras enseñaba en el Templo. Pero nadie le echó mano, porque aún no había llegado su tiempo.
Yo no soy de este mundo
21 De nuevo Jesús les dijo:
—Yo me voy y ustedes me buscarán, pero en su pecado morirán. Adonde yo voy, ustedes no pueden ir.
22 Comentaban, por tanto, los judíos: «¿Acaso piensa suicidarse? ¿Será por eso que dice: “Adonde yo voy, ustedes no pueden ir”?».
23 —Ustedes son de aquí abajo —continuó Jesús—; yo soy de allá arriba. Ustedes son de este mundo; yo no soy de este mundo. 24 Por eso les he dicho que morirán en sus pecados, pues, si no creen que yo soy el que afirmo ser,[b] en sus pecados morirán.
25 —¿Quién eres tú? —le preguntaron.
—En primer lugar, ¿qué tengo que explicarles?[c] —contestó Jesús—. 26 Son muchas las cosas que tengo que decir y juzgar de ustedes. Pero el que me envió es veraz, y lo que le he oído decir es lo mismo que le repito al mundo.
27 Ellos no entendieron que les hablaba de su Padre. 28 Por eso Jesús añadió:
—Cuando hayan levantado al Hijo del hombre, sabrán ustedes que yo soy y que no hago nada por mi propia cuenta, sino que hablo conforme a lo que el Padre me ha enseñado. 29 El que me envió está conmigo; no me ha dejado solo, porque siempre hago lo que le agrada.
30 Mientras aún hablaba, muchos creyeron en él.
Los hijos de Abraham
31 Jesús se dirigió entonces a los judíos que habían creído en él, y les dijo:
—Si se mantienen fieles a mis palabras, serán realmente mis discípulos; 32 y conocerán la verdad, y la verdad los hará libres.
33 —Nosotros somos descendientes de Abraham —le contestaron—, y nunca hemos sido esclavos de nadie. ¿Cómo puedes decir que seremos liberados?
34 —Les aseguro que todo el que peca es esclavo del pecado —afirmó Jesús—. 35 Ahora bien, el esclavo no se queda para siempre en la familia; pero el hijo sí se queda en ella para siempre. 36 Así que, si el Hijo los libera, serán ustedes verdaderamente libres. 37 Yo sé que ustedes son descendientes de Abraham. Sin embargo, procuran matarme porque no está en sus planes aceptar mi palabra. 38 Yo hablo de lo que he visto en presencia del Padre; y ustedes hacen lo que de su padre han escuchado.
39 —Nuestro padre es Abraham —replicaron.
Entonces Jesús les contestó:
—Si fueran hijos de Abraham, harían lo mismo que él hizo. 40 Ustedes, en cambio, quieren matarme a mí, que les he expuesto la verdad que he recibido de parte de Dios. ¡Abraham jamás hizo algo así! 41 Las obras de ustedes son como las de su padre.
—Nosotros no somos hijos ilegítimos —le reclamaron—. Un solo Padre tenemos y es Dios mismo.

42 —Si Dios fuera su Padre —contestó Jesús—, ustedes me amarían, porque yo he venido de Dios y aquí me tienen. No he venido por mi propia cuenta, sino que él me envió. 43 ¿Por qué no entienden mi modo de hablar? Porque no pueden aceptar mi palabra. 44 Ustedes son de su padre, el diablo, cuyos deseos quieren cumplir. Desde el principio este ha sido un asesino, y no se mantiene en la verdad, porque no hay verdad en él. Cuando miente, expresa su propia naturaleza, porque es un mentiroso. ¡Es el padre de la mentira! 45 Y sin embargo a mí, que les digo la verdad, no me creen. 46 ¿Quién de ustedes me puede probar que soy culpable de pecado? Si digo la verdad, ¿por qué no me creen? 47 El que es de Dios escucha lo que Dios dice. Pero ustedes no escuchan, porque no son de Dios.

48 —¿No tenemos razón al decir que eres un samaritano y que estás endemoniado? —replicaron los judíos.
49 —No estoy poseído por ningún demonio —contestó Jesús—. Tan solo honro a mi Padre; pero ustedes me deshonran a mí. 50 Yo no busco mi propia gloria; pero hay uno que la busca y él es el juez. 51 Les aseguro que el que cumple mi palabra nunca morirá.
52 —¡Ahora estamos convencidos de que estás endemoniado! —exclamaron los judíos—. Abraham murió, y también los profetas, pero tú sales diciendo que, si alguno guarda tu palabra, nunca morirá. 53 ¿Acaso eres tú mayor que nuestro padre Abraham? Él murió, y también murieron los profetas. ¿Quién te crees tú?
54 —Si yo me glorifico a mí mismo —les respondió Jesús—, mi gloria no significa nada. Pero quien me glorifica es mi Padre, el que ustedes dicen que es su Dios, 55 aunque no lo conocen. Yo, en cambio, sí lo conozco. Si dijera que no lo conozco, sería tan mentiroso como ustedes; pero lo conozco y cumplo su palabra. 56 Abraham, el padre de ustedes, se regocijó al pensar que vería mi día; y lo vio y se alegró.
57 —Ni a los cincuenta años llegas —dijeron los judíos—, ¿y has visto a Abraham?
58 Jesús afirmó:
—Les aseguro que, antes de que Abraham naciera, ¡yo soy!
59 Entonces los judíos tomaron piedras para arrojárselas, pero Jesús se escondió y salió inadvertido del Templo.[d]

The Adulteress
8 But Jesus went to the Mount of Olives. 2 Early in the morning, he came back into the temple courts. And all the people kept coming to him. He sat down and taught them.
3 Then the scribes and Pharisees brought a woman caught in adultery and had her stand in the center. 4 “Teacher,” they said to him, “this woman was caught in the act of committing adultery. 5 In the Law, Moses commanded us to stone such women. So what do you say?” 6 They asked this to test him, so that they might have evidence to accuse him.
Jesus bent down and started writing on the ground with his finger. 7 But when they kept on asking him for an answer, he stood up and said to them, “Let the one among you who is without sin be the first to throw a stone at her.” 8 Then he stooped down again and wrote on the ground.
9 When they heard this, they went away one by one, beginning with the older men. Jesus was left alone with the woman in the center. 10 Jesus stood up and said to her, “Woman, where are they? Has no one condemned you?”
11 “No one, Lord,” she answered.
Then Jesus said, “Neither do I condemn you. Go, and from now on do not sin anymore.”
Jesus Is the Light of the World
12 When Jesus spoke to them again, he said, “I am the Light of the World. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”
13 So the Pharisees said to him, “You testify about yourself. Your testimony is not valid.”
14 “Even if I testify about myself,” Jesus replied, “my testimony is valid, because I know where I came from and where I am going. But you do not know where I came from or where I am going. 15 You judge according to the flesh. I am not judging anyone. 16 But even if I were to judge, my judgment would be true, because I am not alone, but I am with the Father who sent me. 17 Even in your Law it is written that the testimony of two people is valid. 18 I am one who testifies about myself, and the Father who sent me testifies about me.”
19 Then they asked him, “Where is your Father?”
“You do not know me or my Father,” Jesus answered. “If you knew me, you would also know my Father.”
20 He spoke these words while teaching in the temple area near the offering box. But no one arrested him, because his time had not arrived yet.
21 So he told them again, “I am going away. You will look for me, and you will die in your sin. Where I am going, you cannot come.”
22 So the Jews asked, “He won’t kill himself, will he, because he says, ‘Where I am going, you cannot come’?”
23 “You are from below,” he told them. “I am from above. You are of this world. I am not of this world. 24 That is why I told you that you will die in your sins. For if you do not believe that I am the one, you will die in your sins.”
25 “Who are you?” they asked.
Jesus replied, “What I have been telling you from the beginning. 26 I have many things to say and to judge concerning you. But the one who sent me is true. And what I heard from him, these are the things I am telling the world.” 27 They did not understand that he was talking to them about the Father.
28 So Jesus said to them, “When you lift up the Son of Man, then you will know that I am the one, and that I do nothing on my own. But I speak exactly as the Father taught me. 29 The one who sent me is with me. He has not left me alone, because I always do what pleases him.”
30 As he was saying these things, many believed in him.
31 So Jesus said to the Jews who had believed him, “If you remain in my word, you are really my disciples. 32 You will also know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”
33 “We are Abraham’s descendants,” they answered, “and we have never been slaves of anyone. How can you say, ‘You will be set free’?”
34 Jesus answered, “Amen, Amen, I tell you: Everyone who keeps committing sin is a slave to sin. 35 But a slave does not remain in the family forever. A son does remain forever. 36 So if the Son sets you free, you really will be free. 37 I know you are Abraham’s descendants. Yet you are looking for a way to kill me, because there is no place for my word in you. 38 I am telling you what I have seen at the side of the Father. As for you, you do what you have heard[a] at the side of your father.”
39 “Our father is Abraham!” they answered.
“If you were Abraham’s children,” Jesus told them, “you would do the works of Abraham. 40 But now you are looking for a way to kill me, a man who has told you the truth, which I heard at the side of God. Abraham did not do this. 41 You are doing the works of your father.”
“We were not born of sexual immorality!” they said. “We have one Father: God.”
42 Jesus replied, “If God were your Father, you would love me, because I came from God and I am here. Indeed, I have not come on my own, but he sent me. 43 Why do you not understand my message? It is because you are not able to listen to my word. 44 You belong to your father, the Devil, and you want to do your father’s desires. He was a murderer from the beginning and did not remain standing in the truth, because there is no truth in him. Whenever he lies, he speaks from what is his, because he is a liar and the father of lying. 45 But because I tell the truth, you do not believe me. 46 Who of you can convict me of sin? If I am telling the truth, why don’t you believe me? 47 Whoever belongs to God listens to what God says. The reason you do not listen is that you do not belong to God.”
48 The Jews responded, “Are we not right in saying that you are a Samaritan and have a demon?”
49 Jesus answered, “I do not have a demon. On the contrary, I honor my Father, and you dishonor me. 50 I do not seek my own glory. There is one who seeks it, and he is the judge. 51 Amen, Amen, I tell you: If anyone holds on to my word, he will certainly never see death.”
52 So the Jews said to him, “Now we know that you have a demon. Abraham died, and so did the prophets. Yet you say, ‘If anyone holds on to my word, he will certainly never taste death.’ 53 You are not greater than our father, Abraham, are you? He died. And the prophets died. Who do you think you are?”
54 Jesus answered, “If I glorify myself, my glory is nothing. It is my Father who glorifies me, about whom you say, ‘He is our God.’ 55 Yet you do not really know him, but I do know him. If I said, ‘I do not know him,’ I would be a liar like you. But I do know him, and I hold on to his word. 56 Your father Abraham was glad that he would see my day. He saw it and rejoiced.”
57 The Jews replied, “You aren’t even fifty years old, and you have seen Abraham?”
58 Jesus said to them, “Amen, Amen, I tell you: Before Abraham was born, I am.” 59 Then they picked up stones to throw at him. But Jesus was hidden and left the temple area.[b]
