பெத்தானியாவில் இயேசு
(மத்தேயு 26:6-13; மாற்கு 14:3-9)
12 பஸ்கா பண்டிகைக்கு இன்னும் ஆறு நாட்கள் இருந்தன. இயேசு பெத்தானியாவுக்கு வந்தார். அங்கே லாசரு வாழ்ந்து வந்தான். (இவன் இறந்த பின்னரும் இயேசுவால் உயிர் பெற்று எழுந்தவன்) 2 பெத்தானியாவில் இயேசுவுக்கு இரவு விருந்து ஏற்பாடு செய்தனர். மார்த்தாள் உணவு பரிமாறினாள். இயேசுவோடு லாசருவும் இன்னும் பலரும் விருந்தில் கலந்துகொண்டனர். 3 மரியாள் சுத்தமான நளதம் என்னும் விலை உயர்ந்த வாசனைத் தைலத்தை ஒரு இராத்தல் கொண்டு வந்தாள். அவள் அதனை இயேசுவின் பாதங்களில் ஊற்றினாள். பிறகு அதனைத் தன் தலை மயிரால் துடைத்தாள். வீடு முழுவதும் தைலத்தின் வாசனை நிறைந்துவிட்டது.
4 யூதாஸ்காரியோத்தும் அங்கிருந்தான். (யூதாஸ் இயேசுவின் சீஷரில் ஒருவன். இவன்தான் பிறகு இயேசுவிற்கு எதிரானவன்.) மரியாள் செய்தவற்றை இவன் விரும்பவில்லை. 5 அவன் “இத்தைலம் முந்நூறு வெள்ளிகாசுகள் மதிப்பு உடையது. இதனை விற்று, அந்தப் பணத்தை ஏழைகளுக்குக் கொடுத்திருக்கலாம்” என்றான். 6 ஆனால் உண்மையில் அவனுக்கு ஏழைகளின்மீது அக்கறையில்லை. அவன் ஒரு திருடனானபடியால் இவ்வாறு சொன்னான். இவன்தான் இயேசுவின் சீஷர்களுள் பணப்பையை வைத்திருந்தவன். இவன் அவ்வப்போது பணப்பையிலிருந்து பணம் திருடி வந்தான்.
7 இயேசு அவனிடம், “அவளைத் தடை செய்யாதீர்கள். என்னை அடக்கம்பண்ணும் நாளுக்காக இதைச் சேமித்து வைத்திருந்தாள். 8 ஏழை மக்கள் எப்பொழுதும் உங்களோடு இருப்பார்கள். நானோ எப்பொழுதும் உங்களோடு இருப்பதில்லை” என்றார்.
லாசருவுக்கு எதிரான சதி
9 யூதர்களில் பலர், இயேசு பெத்தானியாவில் இருப்பதாக அறிந்தனர். ஆகையால் அவர்கள் அங்கே சென்றனர். அவர்கள் இயேசுவை மட்டுமல்லாமல் லாசருவையும் பார்க்க எண்ணினர். லாசரு இயேசுவால் மரணத்துக்குப் பின்னும் உயிரோடு எழுப்பப்பட்டவன். 10 ஆகவே, தலைமை ஆசாரியர்களும் இயேசுவோடு லாசருவையும் கொல்லத் திட்டமிட்டார்கள். 11 ஏனென்றால் லாசருவின் நிமித்தம் ஏராளமான யூதர்கள் தங்கள் தலைவர்களை விட்டுவிட்டு இயேசுவை நம்பத் தொடங்கினர். அதனால்தான் யூதத் தலைவர்கள் லாசருவையும் கொலைசெய்ய விரும்பினர்.
எருசலேமில் இயேசு
(மத்தேயு 21:1-11; மாற்கு 11:1-11; லூக்கா 19:28-40)
12 மறுநாள் இயேசு வருவதாக எருசலேமிலுள்ள பெருங்கூட்ட மக்கள் கேள்விப்பட்டனர். இம்மக்கள் பஸ்கா பண்டிகைக்காக வந்தவர்கள். 13 அந்த மக்கள் குருத்தோலைகளைப் பிடித்துக்கொண்டு இயேசுவைச் சந்திக்கச் சென்றனர். அவர்கள்:
“‘அவரைப் புகழ்வோம்! வருக!’
‘தேவனால் ஆசீர்வதிக்கப்பட்டவரே கர்த்தரின் பேரால் வருகிறவரே!’(A)
“தேவன் இஸ்ரவேலின் ராஜாவை ஆசீர்வதிப்பாராக!”
என்று முழங்கினர்.
14 இயேசு ஒரு கழுதையைக் கண்டு அதன் மேல் ஏறிக்கொண்டார்.
15 “சீயோன்[a] நகரமே அஞ்சவேண்டாம். பார்.
உன் ராஜா வந்துகொண்டிருக்கிறார்.
அவர் இளங்கழுதைமேல் சவாரி செய்து வருகிறார்”(B)
என்றும் மக்கள் ஆரவாரம் செய்தனர்.
16 இயேசுவின் சீஷர்கள் இவற்றை முதலில் புரிந்து கொள்ளவில்லை. ஆனால் இயேசு மகிமையில் எடுத்துக்கொள்ளப்பட்ட பிறகு, அவர்கள் இவை ஏற்கெனவே எழுதப்பட்டிருக்கிறதே என்று உணர்ந்துகொண்டனர். அத்துடன் அவருக்காகத் தாங்கள் செய்த செய்கைகளையும் நினைவுகூர்ந்தனர்.
17 மரணத்திலிருந்து லாசருவை இயேசு எழுப்பி “கல்லறையை விட்டு வெளியே வா” என்று சொன்னபோது இயேசுவுடன் பலர் இருந்தனர். இப்பொழுது அவர்கள் மற்றவர்களிடம் இயேசு செய்தவற்றைப்பற்றிக் கூறினர். 18 இயேசு இந்த அற்புதத்தைச் செய்ததைக் கேள்விப்பட்ட ஏராளமான மக்கள் இயேசுவை வரவேற்பதற்காகத் திரண்டனர். 19 அதனால் பரிசேயர்கள் தங்களுக்குள், “பாருங்கள், நமது திட்டம் நன்மையைத் தரவில்லை. எல்லா மக்களும் அவரைப் பின்தொடர்கிறார்கள்” என்று பேசிக்கொண்டனர்.
ஜீவன்-மரணம்
20 அங்கே கிரேக்க நாட்டு மக்களில் சிலரும் இருந்தனர். இவர்கள் பஸ்கா பண்டிகையில் வழிபாடு செய்ய எருசலேமுக்கு வந்திருந்தனர். 21 இவர்கள் பிலிப்புவிடம் சென்று (கலிலேயாவிலுள்ள பெத்சாய்தாவில் இருந்து வந்தவன் பிலிப்பு) “ஐயா, நாங்கள் இயேசுவைச் சந்திக்க விரும்புகிறோம்” என்றனர். 22 பிலிப்பு அந்திரேயாவிடம் சொன்னான். பிறகு இருவரும் இயேசுவிடம் சொன்னார்கள்.
23 இயேசு அவர்களிடம், “மனிதகுமாரன் மகிமை பெறுகிற நேரம் வந்துவிட்டது. 24 நான் உங்களுக்கு உண்மையைக் கூறுகிறேன். ஒரு கோதுமை விதை தரையில் விழுந்து (இறக்க) அழிய வேண்டும். பிறகுதான் அது வளர்ந்து ஏராளமாகக் கோதுமையைத் தரும். ஆனால் அது அழியாவிட்டால், அது தனி விதையாகவே இருக்கும். 25 தனக்குச் சொந்தமான வாழ்வை நேசிக்கிறவன் அதனை இழப்பான். இவ்வுலகில் தன் வாழ்வின்மீது வெறுப்புகொண்டவன் என்றென்றைக்கும் அதைக் காத்துக்கொள்வான். அவன் நிரந்தர வாழ்வைப் பெறுவான். 26 எனக்குப் பணிவிடை செய்கிறவன் என்னைப் பின்பற்றவேண்டும். நான் எங்கெங்கே இருக்கிறேனோ அங்கெல்லாம் என் பணியாளனும் இருப்பான். எனக்குப் பணி செய்கிறவர்களை என் பிதாவும் பெருமைப்படுத்துவார்.”
இயேசு தன் மரணத்தைப்பற்றிப் பேசியது
27 “நான் இப்போது கலக்கத்தில் இருக்கிறேன். நான் என்ன சொல்வது? ‘பிதாவே, என்னை இந்தத் துன்ப காலத்தில் இருந்து காப்பாற்றுங்கள்’ என்று சொல்லலாமா? இல்லை, துன்பப்படுவதற்காகவே இத்தருணத்தில் வந்தேன். 28 பிதாவே, உங்கள் பெயருக்கே மகிமையை தேடித்தருக!” என்றார்.
அப்போது வானில் இருந்து ஒரு குரல் வந்து, “நான் என் பெயருக்கு மகிமை கொண்டு வந்திருக்கிறேன். நான் அதை மீண்டும் செய்வேன்” என்றது.
29 அங்கே நின்றிருந்த மக்கள் அக்குரலைக் கேட்டார்கள். அவர்களில் சிலர் அதனை இடி முழக்கம் என்றனர்.
வேறு சிலரோ “ஒரு தேவதூதன் இயேசுவிடம் பேசினான்” என்றனர்.
30 மக்களிடம் இயேசு, “இந்தக் குரல் எனக்காக அல்ல. உங்களுக்காக. 31 உலகம் நியாயம் தீர்க்கப்படுவதற்கான தருணம் இதுதான். இப்பொழுது உலகை ஆண்டுகொண்டிருக்கும் சாத்தான் தூக்கி எறியப்படுவான். 32 நான் பூமியில் இருந்து உயர்த்தப்படுவேன். இது நடைபெறும்போது எல்லா மக்களையும் என்னோடு சேர்த்துக்கொள்வேன்” என்றார். 33 தான் எவ்வாறு இறந்துபோவேன் என்பதைக் காட்டவே இவ்வாறு கூறினார்.
34 ஆனால் மக்களோ, “கிறிஸ்து என்றென்றும் வாழ்வார் என்று நமது சட்டங்கள் கூறுகின்றனவே. அப்படியிருக்க ‘மனித குமாரன் உயர்த்தப்படுவார்’ என்று ஏன் கூறுகின்றீர்? யார் இந்த ‘மனித குமாரன்?’” எனக் கேட்டனர்.
35 பிறகு இயேசு, “இன்னும் சிறிது காலம் உங்களோடு ஒளி இருக்கும். எனவே, ஒளி இருக்கும்போதே நடந்துவிடுங்கள். அப்போதுதான் இருட்டாகிய பாவம் உங்களைப் பிடித்துக்கொள்ளாது. இருட்டிலே நடந்துபோகிறவனுக்குத் தான் எங்கே போகிறோம் என்பது தெரியாமல் இருக்கும். 36 ஆகவே, ஒளி இருக்கும்போதே அதன்மீது நம்பிக்கை வையுங்கள். அப்பொழுது நீங்கள் ஒளியின் பிள்ளைகள் ஆவீர்கள்” என்றார். இயேசு இவற்றையெல்லாம் சொல்லி முடித்தபின் அவ்விடத்தை விட்டுப் போனார். அவர் போய் அவர்களிடமிருந்து தன்னை மறைத்துக்கொண்டார்.
இயேசுவை நம்பாத யூதர்கள்
37 இயேசு இவ்வாறு ஏராளமான அற்புதங்களைச் செய்தார். மக்கள் அவற்றைப் பார்த்தனர். எனினும் அவர்மீது அவர்கள் நம்பிக்கை வைக்கவில்லை. 38 தீர்க்கதரிசி ஏசாயா சொன்னது நிறைவேறும்படிக்கு இவ்வாறு நிகழ்ந்தது.
“கர்த்தாவே, நாங்கள் சொன்னதைக் கேட்டு நம்பிக்கை வைத்தவர்கள் யார்?
தேவனின் வல்லமையைக் கண்டுகொண்டவர்கள் யார்?”(C)
39 இதனால்தான் மக்கள் நம்பவில்லை. ஏனென்றால் ஏசாயா மேலும்,
40 “தேவன் மக்களைக் குருடாக்கினார்.
தேவன் அவர்களின் மனதை மூடினார்.
அவர்கள் கண்களினால் பாராமலும் மனதின் மூலம் அறியாமலும் இருக்கவேண்டும் என்றே தேவன் இதைச் செய்தார்.
அதன்பின் அவர்களை நான் குணப்படுத்துவேன்.”(D)
41 இயேசுவின் மகிமையை ஏசாயா அறிந்திருந்தபடியால் அவர் இவ்வாறு சொன்னார். எனவே ஏசாயா இயேசுவைப்பற்றிப் பேசினார்.
42 ஆனால் ஏராளமான மக்கள் இயேசுவை நம்பினார்கள். ஏராளமான யூதத்தலைவர்கள் கூட இயேசுவை நம்பினார்கள். ஆனால் அவர்கள் பரிசேயர்களுக்குப் பயந்தனர். எனவே, அவர்கள் இயேசுவை நம்புவதாக வெளிப்படையாகக் கூறவில்லை. தாம் ஜெப ஆலயத்திற்குப் புறம்பாக்கப்படுவோமோ என்று அவர்கள் பயந்தனர். 43 அவர்கள் தேவனால் வரும் பாராட்டைவிட மனிதரால் வரும் பாராட்டை விரும்பினர்.
தீர்ப்பளிக்கும் வசனங்கள்
44 பிறகு இயேசு உரத்த குரலில், “என்னில் விசுவாசம் வைக்கிறவன் எவனோ அவன், என்னை அனுப்பிய தேவனிடமும் விசுவாசம் வைப்பான். 45 என்னைப் பார்க்கிறவன் எவனோ, அவனே, என்னை அனுப்பிய தேவனையும் பார்க்கிறவனாகிறான். 46 நானே ஒளி, நான் இந்த உலகத்துக்கு வந்திருக்கிறேன். ஆகவே, என்னில் நம்பிக்கை வைக்கிற ஒவ்வொருவனும் இருளில் தங்கமாட்டான்.
47 “நான் மக்களுக்குத் தீர்ப்பளிப்பதற்காக இந்த உலகத்துக்கு வரவில்லை. உலகத்தில் உள்ள மக்களைப் பாதுகாக்கவே வந்திருக்கிறேன். எனவே, என் வார்த்தைகளைக் கேட்டும் என்னை நம்பாமல் போகிறவனை நான் நியாயந்தீர்ப்பதில்லை. 48 என்னை நம்ப மறுக்கிறவர்களையும் நான் சொல்பவற்றை ஏற்றுக்கொள்ளாதவர்களையும் நியாயந்தீர்க்க ஒரு நீதிபதி உண்டு. அதுதான் நான் சொன்ன உபதேசங்கள். அவை இறுதி நாளில் அவர்களை நியாயம்தீர்க்கும். 49 ஏனென்றால் நான் சொன்ன உபதேசங்கள் என்னிடமிருந்து வந்தவையல்ல. நான் சொன்னவையும் உபதேசித்தவையும் என்னை அனுப்பிய என் பிதாவாகிய தேவன் எனக்குச் சொன்னவையாகும். 50 என் பிதாவின் கட்டளைகள் நித்திய ஜீவனுக்குரியவை என்பதை அறிவேன். ஆகையால் நான் சொல்கிறவைகளை என் பிதா எனக்குச் சொன்னபடியே சொல்கிறேன்” என்றார்.

The Anointing at Bethany(A)
12 Then, six days before the Passover, Jesus came to Bethany, (B)where Lazarus was [a]who had been dead, whom He had raised from the dead. 2 (C)There they made Him a supper; and Martha served, but Lazarus was one of those who sat at the table with Him. 3 Then (D)Mary took a pound of very costly oil of (E)spikenard, anointed the feet of Jesus, and wiped His feet with her hair. And the house was filled with the fragrance of the oil.
4 But one of His disciples, (F)Judas Iscariot, Simon’s son, who would betray Him, said, 5 “Why was this fragrant oil not sold for [b]three hundred denarii and given to the poor?” 6 This he said, not that he cared for the poor, but because he was a thief, and (G)had the money box; and he used to take what was put in it.
7 But Jesus said, “Let her alone; [c]she has kept this for the day of My burial. 8 For (H)the poor you have with you always, but Me you do not have always.”
The Plot to Kill Lazarus
9 Now a great many of the Jews knew that He was there; and they came, not for Jesus’ sake only, but that they might also see Lazarus, (I)whom He had raised from the dead. 10 (J)But the chief priests plotted to put Lazarus to death also, 11 (K)because on account of him many of the Jews went away and believed in Jesus.
The Triumphal Entry(L)
12 (M)The next day a great multitude that had come to the feast, when they heard that Jesus was coming to Jerusalem, 13 took branches of palm trees and went out to meet Him, and cried out:
“Hosanna!
(N)‘Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord!’
The King of Israel!”
14 (O)Then Jesus, when He had found a young donkey, sat on it; as it is written:
15 “Fear(P) not, daughter of Zion;
Behold, your King is coming,
Sitting on a donkey’s colt.”
16 (Q)His disciples did not understand these things at first; (R)but when Jesus was glorified, (S)then they remembered that these things were written about Him and that they had done these things to Him.
17 Therefore the people, who were with Him when He called Lazarus out of his tomb and raised him from the dead, bore witness. 18 (T)For this reason the people also met Him, because they heard that He had done this sign. 19 The Pharisees therefore said among themselves, (U)“You see that you are accomplishing nothing. Look, the world has gone after Him!”
The Fruitful Grain of Wheat
20 Now there (V)were certain Greeks among those (W)who came up to worship at the feast. 21 Then they came to Philip, (X)who was from Bethsaida of Galilee, and asked him, saying, “Sir, we wish to see Jesus.”
22 Philip came and told Andrew, and in turn Andrew and Philip told Jesus.
23 But Jesus answered them, saying, (Y)“The hour has come that the Son of Man should be glorified. 24 Most assuredly, I say to you, (Z)unless a grain of wheat falls into the ground and dies, it remains alone; but if it dies, it produces much [d]grain. 25 (AA)He who loves his life will lose it, and he who hates his life in this world will keep it for eternal life. 26 If anyone serves Me, let him (AB)follow Me; and (AC)where I am, there My servant will be also. If anyone serves Me, him My Father will honor.
Jesus Predicts His Death on the Cross
27 (AD)“Now My soul is troubled, and what shall I say? ‘Father, save Me from this hour’? (AE)But for this purpose I came to this hour. 28 Father, glorify Your name.”
(AF)Then a voice came from heaven, saying, “I have both glorified it and will glorify it again.”
29 Therefore the people who stood by and heard it said that it had thundered. Others said, “An angel has spoken to Him.”
30 Jesus answered and said, (AG)“This voice did not come because of Me, but for your sake. 31 Now is the judgment of this world; now (AH)the ruler of this world will be cast out. 32 And I, (AI)if I am [e]lifted up from the earth, will draw (AJ)all peoples to Myself.” 33 (AK)This He said, signifying by what death He would die.
34 The people answered Him, (AL)“We have heard from the law that the Christ remains forever; and how can You say, ‘The Son of Man must be lifted up’? Who is this Son of Man?”
35 Then Jesus said to them, “A little while longer (AM)the light is with you. (AN)Walk while you have the light, lest darkness overtake you; (AO)he who walks in darkness does not know where he is going. 36 While you have the light, believe in the light, that you may become (AP)sons of light.” These things Jesus spoke, and departed, and (AQ)was hidden from them.
Who Has Believed Our Report?
37 But although He had done so many (AR)signs before them, they did not believe in Him, 38 that the word of Isaiah the prophet might be fulfilled, which he spoke:
(AS)“Lord, who has believed our report?
And to whom has the arm of the Lord been revealed?”
39 Therefore they could not believe, because Isaiah said again:
40 “He(AT) has blinded their eyes and hardened their hearts,
(AU)Lest they should see with their eyes,
Lest they should understand with their hearts and turn,
So that I should heal them.”
41 (AV)These things Isaiah said [f]when he saw His glory and spoke of Him.
Walk in the Light
42 Nevertheless even among the rulers many believed in Him, but (AW)because of the Pharisees they did not confess Him, lest they should be put out of the synagogue; 43 (AX)for they loved the praise of men more than the praise of God.
44 Then Jesus cried out and said, (AY)“He who believes in Me, (AZ)believes not in Me (BA)but in Him who sent Me. 45 And (BB)he who sees Me sees Him who sent Me. 46 (BC)I have come as a light into the world, that whoever believes in Me should not abide in darkness. 47 And if anyone hears My words and does not [g]believe, (BD)I do not judge him; for (BE)I did not come to judge the world but to save the world. 48 (BF)He who rejects Me, and does not receive My words, has that which judges him—(BG)the word that I have spoken will judge him in the last day. 49 For (BH)I have not spoken on My own authority; but the Father who sent Me gave Me a command, (BI)what I should say and what I should speak. 50 And I know that His command is everlasting life. Therefore, whatever I speak, just as the Father has told Me, so I (BJ)speak.”

Jesus blir smord i Betania
12 Sex dagar före påsk kom Jesus till Betania där Lasarus bodde, han som Jesus hade uppväckt från de döda. 2 Där ordnade de en festmåltid för honom. Marta passade upp, och Lasarus var en av dem som låg till bords med honom. 3 Då tog Maria en hel flaska dyrbar äkta nardusolja[a] och smorde Jesu fötter och torkade dem med sitt hår, och huset fylldes av doften från oljan.
4 Men Judas Iskariot, en av hans lärjungar, den som skulle förråda honom, invände: 5 "Varför sålde man inte den oljan för trehundra denarer och gav till de fattiga?" 6 Det sade han inte för att han brydde sig om de fattiga, utan för att han var en tjuv och brukade ta för sig av det som lades i kassan som han hade hand om. 7 Jesus sade då: "Låt henne vara. Hon har sparat[b] den till min begravningsdag. 8 (A) De fattiga har ni alltid bland er, men mig har ni inte alltid[c]."
9 (B) En stor mängd judar fick veta att Jesus var där, och de kom inte bara för Jesu skull utan också för att se Lasarus som han hade uppväckt från de döda. 10 Då bestämde sig översteprästerna för att döda även Lasarus, 11 eftersom många judar lämnade dem för hans skull och trodde på Jesus.
Jesus rider in i Jerusalem
12 (C) Nästa dag hade folk i stora skaror kommit till högtiden. När de fick höra att Jesus var på väg in i Jerusalem, 13 (D) tog de palmblad och gick ut för att möta honom. Och de ropade: "Hosianna[d]! Välsignad är han som kommer i Herrens namn, han som är Israels kung!" 14 Jesus fann ett åsneföl och satt upp på det, som det står skrivet:
15 Var inte rädd, dotter Sion![e]
Se, din kung kommer,
ridande på ett åsneföl.
16 (E) Hans lärjungar förstod först inte detta. Men när Jesus hade blivit förhärligad, kom de ihåg att det var skrivet så om honom och att man hade gjort så för honom.
17 Alla som hade varit med honom när han kallade Lasarus ut ur graven och uppväckte honom från de döda vittnade nu om detta, 18 och många kom ut och mötte honom därför att de hörde att han hade gjort detta tecken. 19 Då sade fariseerna till varandra: "Ser ni att ni inte kommer någon vart? Hela världen springer ju efter honom."
Jesus förutsäger sin död
20 Bland dem som hade kommit upp för att tillbe vid högtiden fanns några greker[f]. 21 De kom nu till Filippus, som var från Betsaida[g] i Galileen, och bad honom: "Herre, vi vill se Jesus." 22 Filippus gick och talade om det för Andreas, och Andreas och Filippus gick och berättade det för Jesus.
23 (F) Jesus svarade: "Stunden har kommit när Människosonen ska förhärligas. 24 Jag säger er sanningen: Om vetekornet inte faller i jorden och dör, förblir det ett ensamt korn. Men om det dör bär det rik frukt. 25 (G) Den som älskar sitt liv förlorar det, men den som sätter sitt liv sist[h] i den här världen ska bevara det[i] till evigt liv. 26 (H) Om någon vill tjäna mig ska han följa mig, och där jag är ska också min tjänare vara. Om någon tjänar mig ska Fadern ära honom.
27 (I) Nu är min själ i ångest. Vad ska jag säga? Far, fräls mig från denna stund? Nej, det är för denna stund jag har kommit. 28 (J) Far, förhärliga ditt namn!"
Då kom en röst från himlen: "Jag har förhärligat det, och jag ska förhärliga det igen." 29 Folket som stod där och hörde det sade att det var åskan, andra sade att det var en ängel som talade till honom. 30 (K) Jesus svarade: "Den rösten kom inte för min skull, utan för er. 31 (L) Nu går en dom över denna värld. Nu ska denna världens furste kastas ut. 32 Och när jag blivit upphöjd från jorden, ska jag dra alla till mig." 33 Detta sade han för att ange på vilket sätt han skulle dö.
34 (M) Då sade folket till honom: "Vi har hört i lagen att Messias ska vara kvar för alltid[j]. Hur kan du då säga att Människosonen måste bli upphöjd? Vad är det för en Människoson[k]?" 35 (N) Jesus sade till dem: "Ännu en kort tid är ljuset bland er. Vandra medan ni har ljuset så att inte mörkret övervinner er. Den som vandrar i mörkret vet inte vart han går. 36 Tro på ljuset medan ni har ljuset, så att ni blir ljusets barn." När Jesus hade sagt detta, drog han sig undan och dolde sig för dem.
Judarnas otro
37 Trots att han hade gjort så många tecken inför dem trodde de inte på honom. 38 Så uppfylldes profeten Jesajas ord: Herre, vem trodde vår predikan, och för vem blev Herrens arm uppenbarad?[l] 39 Alltså kunde de inte tro, för Jesaja har också sagt:
40 Han har förblindat deras ögon
och förhärdat deras hjärta,
så att de inte ser med sina ögon
och förstår med sitt hjärta
och vänder om och blir helade
av mig.[m]
41 Så sade Jesaja därför att han såg hans härlighet och talade om honom.
42 (O) Ändå var det många som trodde på honom, även bland rådsherrarna. Men för fariseernas skull ville de inte bekänna det, för att inte bli uteslutna ur synagogan. 43 (P) De älskade människors ära mer än äran från Gud.
44 (Q) Jesus ropade: "Den som tror på mig, han tror inte på mig utan på honom som har sänt mig. 45 (R) Och den som ser mig, han ser honom som har sänt mig. 46 (S) Jag har kommit till världen som ett ljus, för att ingen som tror på mig ska bli kvar i mörkret. 47 (T) Om någon hör mina ord och inte håller dem, så dömer inte jag honom, för jag har inte kommit för att döma världen utan för att frälsa världen. 48 (U) Den som förkastar mig och inte tar emot mina ord har en domare över sig: det ord som jag har talat ska döma honom på den yttersta dagen. 49 (V) Jag har inte talat av mig själv, utan Fadern som har sänt mig har befallt mig vad jag ska säga och tala. 50 Och jag vet att hans befallning är evigt liv. Det jag talar, talar jag därför så som Fadern har sagt mig."

Jesus Anointed at Bethany(A)
12 Six days before the Passover,(B) Jesus came to Bethany,(C) where Lazarus lived, whom Jesus had raised from the dead. 2 Here a dinner was given in Jesus’ honor. Martha served,(D) while Lazarus was among those reclining at the table with him. 3 Then Mary took about a pint[a] of pure nard, an expensive perfume;(E) she poured it on Jesus’ feet and wiped his feet with her hair.(F) And the house was filled with the fragrance of the perfume.
4 But one of his disciples, Judas Iscariot, who was later to betray him,(G) objected, 5 “Why wasn’t this perfume sold and the money given to the poor? It was worth a year’s wages.[b]” 6 He did not say this because he cared about the poor but because he was a thief; as keeper of the money bag,(H) he used to help himself to what was put into it.
7 “Leave her alone,” Jesus replied. “It was intended that she should save this perfume for the day of my burial.(I) 8 You will always have the poor among you,[c](J) but you will not always have me.”
9 Meanwhile a large crowd of Jews found out that Jesus was there and came, not only because of him but also to see Lazarus, whom he had raised from the dead.(K) 10 So the chief priests made plans to kill Lazarus as well, 11 for on account of him(L) many of the Jews were going over to Jesus and believing in him.(M)
Jesus Comes to Jerusalem as King(N)
12 The next day the great crowd that had come for the festival heard that Jesus was on his way to Jerusalem. 13 They took palm branches(O) and went out to meet him, shouting,
“Hosanna![d]”
“Blessed is the king of Israel!”(Q)
14 Jesus found a young donkey and sat on it, as it is written:
16 At first his disciples did not understand all this.(S) Only after Jesus was glorified(T) did they realize that these things had been written about him and that these things had been done to him.
17 Now the crowd that was with him(U) when he called Lazarus from the tomb and raised him from the dead continued to spread the word. 18 Many people, because they had heard that he had performed this sign,(V) went out to meet him. 19 So the Pharisees said to one another, “See, this is getting us nowhere. Look how the whole world has gone after him!”(W)
Jesus Predicts His Death
20 Now there were some Greeks(X) among those who went up to worship at the festival. 21 They came to Philip, who was from Bethsaida(Y) in Galilee, with a request. “Sir,” they said, “we would like to see Jesus.” 22 Philip went to tell Andrew; Andrew and Philip in turn told Jesus.
23 Jesus replied, “The hour(Z) has come for the Son of Man to be glorified.(AA) 24 Very truly I tell you, unless a kernel of wheat falls to the ground and dies,(AB) it remains only a single seed. But if it dies, it produces many seeds. 25 Anyone who loves their life will lose it, while anyone who hates their life in this world will keep it(AC) for eternal life.(AD) 26 Whoever serves me must follow me; and where I am, my servant also will be.(AE) My Father will honor the one who serves me.
27 “Now my soul is troubled,(AF) and what shall I say? ‘Father,(AG) save me from this hour’?(AH) No, it was for this very reason I came to this hour. 28 Father, glorify your name!”
Then a voice came from heaven,(AI) “I have glorified it, and will glorify it again.” 29 The crowd that was there and heard it said it had thundered; others said an angel had spoken to him.
30 Jesus said, “This voice was for your benefit,(AJ) not mine. 31 Now is the time for judgment on this world;(AK) now the prince of this world(AL) will be driven out. 32 And I, when I am lifted up[g] from the earth,(AM) will draw all people to myself.”(AN) 33 He said this to show the kind of death he was going to die.(AO)
34 The crowd spoke up, “We have heard from the Law(AP) that the Messiah will remain forever,(AQ) so how can you say, ‘The Son of Man(AR) must be lifted up’?(AS) Who is this ‘Son of Man’?”
35 Then Jesus told them, “You are going to have the light(AT) just a little while longer. Walk while you have the light,(AU) before darkness overtakes you.(AV) Whoever walks in the dark does not know where they are going. 36 Believe in the light while you have the light, so that you may become children of light.”(AW) When he had finished speaking, Jesus left and hid himself from them.(AX)
Belief and Unbelief Among the Jews
37 Even after Jesus had performed so many signs(AY) in their presence, they still would not believe in him. 38 This was to fulfill the word of Isaiah the prophet:
39 For this reason they could not believe, because, as Isaiah says elsewhere:
40 “He has blinded their eyes
and hardened their hearts,
so they can neither see with their eyes,
nor understand with their hearts,
nor turn—and I would heal them.”[i](BA)
41 Isaiah said this because he saw Jesus’ glory(BB) and spoke about him.(BC)
42 Yet at the same time many even among the leaders believed in him.(BD) But because of the Pharisees(BE) they would not openly acknowledge their faith for fear they would be put out of the synagogue;(BF) 43 for they loved human praise(BG) more than praise from God.(BH)
44 Then Jesus cried out, “Whoever believes in me does not believe in me only, but in the one who sent me.(BI) 45 The one who looks at me is seeing the one who sent me.(BJ) 46 I have come into the world as a light,(BK) so that no one who believes in me should stay in darkness.
47 “If anyone hears my words but does not keep them, I do not judge that person. For I did not come to judge the world, but to save the world.(BL) 48 There is a judge for the one who rejects me and does not accept my words; the very words I have spoken will condemn them(BM) at the last day. 49 For I did not speak on my own, but the Father who sent me commanded me(BN) to say all that I have spoken. 50 I know that his command leads to eternal life.(BO) So whatever I say is just what the Father has told me to say.”(BP)
