The Philistines and the Ark
5 When the Philistines captured the ark of God, they brought it from (A)Ebenezer to (B)Ashdod. 2 Then the Philistines took the ark of God and brought it into the house of Dagon and set it up beside (C)Dagon. 3 And when the people of Ashdod rose early the next day, behold, (D)Dagon had fallen face downward on the ground before the ark of the Lord. So they took Dagon and put him back in his place. 4 But when they rose early on the next morning, behold, Dagon had fallen face downward on the ground before the ark of the Lord, (E)and the head of Dagon and both his hands were lying cut off on the threshold. Only the trunk of Dagon was left to him. 5 This is why the priests of Dagon and all who enter the house of Dagon (F)do not tread on the threshold of Dagon in Ashdod to this day.
6 (G)The hand of the Lord was heavy against the people of Ashdod, and he terrified and afflicted them with (H)tumors, both Ashdod and its territory. 7 And when the men of Ashdod saw how things were, they said, “The ark of the God of Israel must not remain with us, for his hand is hard against us and against Dagon our god.” 8 So they sent and gathered together all (I)the lords of the Philistines and said, “What shall we do with the ark of the God of Israel?” They answered, “Let the ark of the God of Israel be brought around to Gath.” So they brought the ark of the God of Israel there. 9 But after they had brought it around, (J)the hand of the Lord was against the city, causing a very great panic, and he afflicted the men of the city, both young and old, so that (K)tumors broke out on them. 10 So they sent the ark of God to Ekron. But as soon as the ark of God came to Ekron, the people of Ekron cried out, “They have brought around to us the ark of the God of Israel to kill us and our people.” 11 (L)They sent therefore and gathered together all the lords of the Philistines and said, “Send away the ark of the God of Israel, and let it return to its own place, that it may not kill us and our people.” For there was a deathly panic throughout the whole city. (M)The hand of God was very heavy there. 12 The men who did not die were struck with (N)tumors, and the cry of the city went up to heaven.

5 And the Philistines took the ark of God, and brought it from Ebenezer unto Ashdod.
2 When the Philistines took the ark of God, they brought it into the house of Dagon, and set it by Dagon.
3 And when they of Ashdod arose early on the morrow, behold, Dagon was fallen upon his face to the earth before the ark of the Lord. And they took Dagon, and set him in his place again.
4 And when they arose early on the morrow morning, behold, Dagon was fallen upon his face to the ground before the ark of the Lord; and the head of Dagon and both the palms of his hands were cut off upon the threshold; only the stump of Dagon was left to him.
5 Therefore neither the priests of Dagon, nor any that come into Dagon's house, tread on the threshold of Dagon in Ashdod unto this day.
6 But the hand of the Lord was heavy upon them of Ashdod, and he destroyed them, and smote them with emerods, even Ashdod and the coasts thereof.
7 And when the men of Ashdod saw that it was so, they said, The ark of the God of Israel shall not abide with us: for his hand is sore upon us, and upon Dagon our god.
8 They sent therefore and gathered all the lords of the Philistines unto them, and said, What shall we do with the ark of the God of Israel? And they answered, Let the ark of the God of Israel be carried about unto Gath. And they carried the ark of the God of Israel about thither.
9 And it was so, that, after they had carried it about, the hand of the Lord was against the city with a very great destruction: and he smote the men of the city, both small and great, and they had emerods in their secret parts.
10 Therefore they sent the ark of God to Ekron. And it came to pass, as the ark of God came to Ekron, that the Ekronites cried out, saying, They have brought about the ark of the God of Israel to us, to slay us and our people.
11 So they sent and gathered together all the lords of the Philistines, and said, Send away the ark of the God of Israel, and let it go again to his own place, that it slay us not, and our people: for there was a deadly destruction throughout all the city; the hand of God was very heavy there.
12 And the men that died not were smitten with the emerods: and the cry of the city went up to heaven.

A arca de Deus nas mãos dos filisteus
5 Os filisteus levaram a arca de Deus de Ebenézer a Asdode. 2 Eles a levaram ao templo de Dagom e a colocaram ao lado da estátua desse deus. 3 Na manhã seguinte, quando os habitantes de Asdode se levantaram, viram que a estátua de Dagom estava caída no chão, de boca para baixo, diante da arca do SENHOR. Então a levantaram e a colocaram no seu lugar. 4 Mas quando se levantaram na manhã seguinte, outra vez encontraram a estátua caída no chão diante da arca do SENHOR! Desta vez a cabeça e as mãos da estátua estavam quebradas, caídas na entrada. O único que ficou inteiro foi o corpo da estátua. 5 É por isso que até hoje os sacerdotes de Dagom e todas as pessoas que entram no templo de Dagom em Asdode não pisam na entrada.
6 O SENHOR fez a vida do povo de Asdode e de seus vizinhos difícil. Ele causou muitos problemas e fez com que eles tivessem tumores. Também lhes enviou ratazanas que andaram por todos seus barcos e depois foram para sua terra. O povo da cidade tinha muito medo delas.[a] 7 O povo de Asdode viu o que estava acontecendo e disse:
—A arca do Deus de Israel não pode ficar aqui! Deus está castigando a nós e ao nosso deus Dagom.
8 O povo de Asdode convocou os cinco governantes filisteus e lhes perguntou:
—O que devemos fazer com a arca do Deus de Israel?
Os governantes responderam:
—Levem a arca até a cidade de Gate.
E eles assim fizeram. 9 Mas quando os filisteus levaram a arca de Deus a Gate, o SENHOR castigou essa cidade e as pessoas se atemorizaram. Deus causou muitos problemas a todo o povo, jovens e líderes, e fez com que eles tivessem tumores. 10 Portanto, os filisteus enviaram a arca de Deus à cidade de Ecrom, mas quando a arca chegou a essa cidade, o povo de Ecrom começou a se queixar, gritando:
—Por que trouxeram a arca do Deus de Israel a esta cidade? Querem matar todos nós?
11 O povo de Ecrom convocou todos os governantes filisteus e lhes disse:
—Devolvam a arca do Deus de Israel ao seu lugar, antes que nós e o nosso povo sejamos mortos.
Os habitantes de Ecrom tinham muito medo deles. Deus fez com que a vida deles ficasse impossível nesse lugar, 12 e aos que não morreram lhes saíram tumores. Os gritos do povo de Ecrom chegaram até o céu.

5 After the Philistines had captured the ark of God, they took it from Ebenezer(A) to Ashdod.(B) 2 Then they carried the ark into Dagon’s temple and set it beside Dagon.(C) 3 When the people of Ashdod rose early the next day, there was Dagon, fallen(D) on his face on the ground before the ark of the Lord! They took Dagon and put him back in his place. 4 But the following morning when they rose, there was Dagon, fallen on his face on the ground before the ark of the Lord! His head and hands had been broken(E) off and were lying on the threshold; only his body remained. 5 That is why to this day neither the priests of Dagon nor any others who enter Dagon’s temple at Ashdod step on the threshold.(F)
6 The Lord’s hand(G) was heavy on the people of Ashdod and its vicinity; he brought devastation(H) on them and afflicted them with tumors.[a](I) 7 When the people of Ashdod saw what was happening, they said, “The ark of the god of Israel must not stay here with us, because his hand is heavy on us and on Dagon our god.” 8 So they called together all the rulers(J) of the Philistines and asked them, “What shall we do with the ark of the god of Israel?”
They answered, “Have the ark of the god of Israel moved to Gath.(K)” So they moved the ark of the God of Israel.
9 But after they had moved it, the Lord’s hand was against that city, throwing it into a great panic.(L) He afflicted the people of the city, both young and old, with an outbreak of tumors.[b] 10 So they sent the ark of God to Ekron.(M)
As the ark of God was entering Ekron, the people of Ekron cried out, “They have brought the ark of the god of Israel around to us to kill us and our people.” 11 So they called together all the rulers(N) of the Philistines and said, “Send the ark of the god of Israel away; let it go back to its own place, or it[c] will kill us and our people.” For death had filled the city with panic; God’s hand was very heavy on it. 12 Those who did not die(O) were afflicted with tumors, and the outcry of the city went up to heaven.
