ਯਹੋਵਾਹ ਦਾ ਲੋਕਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਉਤਸਾਹਿਤ ਕਰਨਾ
2 ਯਹੋਵਾਹ ਵੱਲੋਂ 7ਵੇਂ ਮਹੀਨੇ ਦੇ 21ਵੇਂ ਦਿਨ ਹੱਜਈ ਨੂੰ ਇਹ ਬਾਣੀ ਹੋਈ: 2 ਯਹੂਦਾਹ ਦੇ ਰਾਜਪਾਲ ਸ਼ਅਲਤੀਏਲ ਦੇ ਪੁੱਤਰ ਜ਼ਰੁੱਬਾਬਲ ਨੂੰ ਅਤੇ ਯਹੋਸਾਦਾਕ ਦੇ ਪੁੱਤਰ ਪਰਧਾਨ ਜਾਜਕ ਯਹੋਸ਼ੁਆ ਨੂੰ ਅਤੇ ਹੋਰ ਸਾਰੇ ਲੋਕਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਦੱਸ: 3 “ਤੁਹਾਡੇ ਵਿੱਚੋਂ ਕੌਣ ਅਜਿਹਾ ਬਾਕੀ ਹੈ ਜਿਸਨੇ ਇਸ ਮੰਦਰ ਦੀ ਪਹਿਲੀ ਖੂਬਸੂਰਤੀ ਨੂੰ ਵੇਖਿਆ, ਜੋ ਕਿ ਬਰਬਾਦ ਹੋ ਚੁੱਕੀ ਹੈ? ਇਸ ਬਾਰੇ ਹੁਣ ਤੁਸੀਂ ਕੀ ਸੋਚਦੇ ਹੋਂ? ਕੀ ਮੰਦਰ ਪਹਿਲੇ ਮੰਦਰ ਦੇ ਮੁਕਾਬਲੇ ਕੁਝ ਵੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਲੱਗਦਾ? 4 ਪਰ ਹੁਣ, ਜ਼ਰੁੱਬਾਬਲ, ਯਹੋਵਾਹ ਨੇ ਆਖਿਆ, ਹੌਂਸਲਾ ਨਾ ਹਾਰ। ਪਰਧਾਨ ਜਾਜਕ ਯਹੋਸ਼ੁਆ ਯਹੋਸਾਦਾਕ ਦੇ ਪੁੱਤਰ ਹੌਂਸਲਾ ਨਾ ਹਾਰ! ਇਸ ਕੌਮ ਦੇ ਸਾਰੇ ਲੋਕੋ ਹੌਂਸਲਾ ਨਾ ਹਾਰੋ। ਯਹੋਵਾਹ ਸਰਬ ਸ਼ਕਤੀਮਾਨ ਨੇ ਇਉਂ ਆਖਿਆ। ਇਹ ਕੰਮ ਜਾਰੀ ਰੱਖੋ ਕਿਉਂ ਜੋ ਮੈਂ ਤੁਹਾਡੇ ਨਾਲ ਹਾਂ। ਯਹੋਵਾਹ ਸਰਬ-ਸ਼ਕਤੀਮਾਨ ਨੇ ਇਹ ਗੱਲਾਂ ਆਖੀਆਂ।”
5 ਯਹੋਵਾਹ ਆਖਦਾ ਹੈ, “ਜਦੋਂ ਤੁਸੀਂ ਮਿਸਰ ਤੋਂ ਨਿਕਲੇ, ਮੈਂ ਤੁਹਾਡੇ ਨਾਲ ਇਹ ਇਕਰਾਰਨਾਮਾ ਕੀਤਾ ਕਿ ਮੇਰਾ ਆਤਮਾ ਹਮੇਸ਼ਾ ਤੁਹਾਡੇ ਅੰਗ-ਸੰਗ ਰਹੇਗਾ, ਇਸ ਲਈ ਡਰੋ ਨਾ। 6 ਕਿਉਂ ਕਿ ਇਹ ਸਭ ਗੱਲਾਂ ਯਹੋਵਾਹ ਸਰਬ ਸ਼ਕਤੀਵਾਨ ਆਖ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ। ਬੋੜੀ ਹੀ ਦੇਰ ਵਿੱਚ, ਮੈਂ ਜ਼ਮੀਨ ਤੇ ਅਕਾਸ਼, ਧਰਤੀ ਅਤੇ ਸਮੁੰਦਰ ਹਿਲਾ ਦੇਵਾਂਗਾ। 7 ਮੈਂ ਕੌਮਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਹਿਲਾ ਦਿਆਂਗਾ ਤੇ ਉਹ ਸਾਰੀਆਂ ਕੌਮਾਂ ਤੋਂ ਤੁਹਾਡੇ ਕੋਲ ਦੌਲਤ ਸਹਿਤ ਆਉਣਗੇ। ਤਦ ਮੈਂ ਇਸ ਮੰਦਰ ਨੂੰ ਪਰਤਾਪ ਨਾਲ ਭਰ ਦਿਆਂਗਾ। ਯਹੋਵਾਹ ਸਰਬ ਸ਼ਕਤੀਮਾਨ ਨੇ ਇੰਝ ਆਖਿਆ। 8 ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦਾ ਸਾਰਾ ਚਾਂਦੀ ਅਤੇ ਸੋਨਾ ਮੇਰਾ ਹੈ। ਸਰਬ ਸ਼ਕਤੀਮਾਨ ਯਹੋਵਾਹ ਇਹ ਆਖ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ। 9 ਅਤੇ ਯਹੋਵਾਹ ਸਰਬ-ਸ਼ਕਤੀਮਾਨ ਆਖਦਾ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਇਹ ਆਖਿਰੀ ਮੰਦਰ ਪਹਿਲਾਂ ਵਾਲੇ ਮੰਦਰ ਨਾਲੋਂ ਵੱਧ ਖੂਬਸੂਰਤ ਹੋਵੇਗਾ ਅਤੇ ਮੈਂ ਇੱਥੇ ਸਾਂਤੀ ਲਿਆਵਾਂਗਾ। ਯਾਦ ਰੱਖਣਾ, ਕਿ ਯਹੋਵਾਹ ਸਰਬ ਸ਼ਕਤੀਮਾਨ ਇਹ ਆਖ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ।”
ਕੰਮ ਸ਼ੁਰੂ ਹੋ ਚੁੱਕਿਆ-ਅਸੀਸ ਮਿਲੇਗੀ
10 ਦਾਰਾ ਪਾਤਸ਼ਾਹ ਦੇ ਦੂਜੇ ਸਾਲ ਦੇ 9 ਵੇਂ ਮਹੀਨੇ ਦੀ 24 ਤਰੀਕ ਨੂੰ ਯਹੋਵਾਹ ਦੀ ਬਾਣੀ ਹੱਜਈ ਨਬੀ ਦੁਆਰਾ ਆਈ ਕਿ 11 ਯਹੋਵਾਹ ਸਰਬ ਸ਼ਕਤੀਮਾਨ ਆਖਦਾ, “ਜਾਜਕਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਪੁੱਛੋ ਕਿ ਬਿਵਸਬਾ ਇਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਗੱਲਾਂ ਬਾਰੇ ਕੀ ਆਖਦੀ ਹੈ: 12 ‘ਫ਼ਰਜ ਕਰੋ ਕਿ ਕੋਈ ਵਿਅਕਤੀ ਆਪਣੇ ਕਪੜਿਆਂ ਦੀ ਤਹਿ ਵਿੱਚ ਕੁਝ ਮਾਸ ਲੈ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਜੋ ਕਿ ਪਵਿੱਤਰ ਹੈ ਜੋ ਇਹ ਬਲੀ ਦਾ ਹਿੱਸਾ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਜੇਕਰ ਉਹ ਕੱਪੜਾ ਰੋਟੀ, ਭੋਜਨ, ਮੈ, ਤੇਲ ਜਾਂ ਕਿਸੇ ਹੋਰ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੇ ਭੋਜਨ ਨੂੰ ਛੂਹ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਤਾਂ ਕੀ ਉਹ ਚੀਜ਼ ਜਿਸ ਨੂੰ ਉਸ ਦਾ ਕਪੜਾ ਛੂਹੇਗਾ ਪਵਿੱਤਰ ਹੋ ਜਾਵੇਗੀ?’”
ਜਾਜਕਾਂ ਨੇ ਜਵਾਬ ਦਿੱਤਾ, “ਨਹੀਂ!”
13 ਤਦ ਹੱਜਈ ਨੇ ਕਿਹਾ, “ਜੇ ਕੋਈ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਕਿਸੇ ਲਾਸ਼ ਨੂੰ ਛੂਹ ਜਾਣ ਨਾਲ ਅਸ਼ੁੱਧ ਹੋ ਗਿਆ ਹੋਵੇ, ਤਾਂ ਇਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਚੀਜ਼ਾਂ ਵਿੱਚੋਂ ਕਿਸੇ ਚੀਜ਼ ਨੂੰ ਛੋਹ ਦੇਵੇ ਤਾਂ ਭਲਾ ਕਿ ਉਹ ਚੀਜ਼ ਅਸ਼ੁੱਧ ਹੋ ਜਾਵੇਗੀ?”
ਤਾਂ ਜਾਜਕਾਂ ਨੇ ਜਵਾਬ ’ਚ ਆਖਿਆ, “ਹਾਂ ਉਹ ਵਸਤ ਅਸ਼ੁੱਧ ਹੋ ਜਾਵੇਗੀ।”
14 ਫ਼ਿਰ ਹੱਜਈ ਨੇ ਆਖਿਆ, “ਯਹੋਵਾਹ ਪਰਮੇਸ਼ੁਰ ਇਉਂ ਆਖਦਾ ਹੈ: ‘ਇਸ ਕੌਮ ਦੇ ਲੋਕਾਂ ਬਾਰੇ ਵੀ ਇਹ ਸੱਚ ਹੈ। ਉਹ ਅਤੇ ਜੋ ਵੀ ਉਹ ਪੈਦਾ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ ਮੇਰੇ ਸਾਹਮਣੇ ਅਸ਼ੁੱਧ ਹੈ। ਇਸ ਲਈ ਉਹ ਜੋ ਕੁਝ ਵੀ ਜਗਵੇਦੀ ਤੇ ਚੜ੍ਹਾਉਣ ਲਈ ਲਿਉਂਦੇ ਹਨ ਉਹ ਵੀ ਅਸ਼ੁੱਧ ਹੈ।
15 “‘ਹੁਣ, ਅੱਜ ਦੇ ਦਿਨ ਤੋਂ ਅਗਾਂਹ, ਇਸ ਬਾਰੇ ਧਿਆਨ ਨਾਲ ਸੋਚੋ: ਤੁਹਾਡੇ ਯਹੋਵਾਹ ਦੇ ਮੰਦਰ ਤੇ ਕੰਮ ਸ਼ੁਰੂ ਕਰਨ ਤੋਂ ਪਹਿਲਾਂ, ਤੁਹਾਡੇ ਲਈ ਗੱਲਾਂ ਕਿਂਝ ਵਾਪਰ ਰਹੀਆਂ ਸਨ? 16 ਜਦੋਂ ਵੀ ਕੋਈ ਅਨਾਜਾਂ ਦੀਆਂ ਢੇਰੀਆਂ ਕੋਲ 20 ਪੈਮਾਨਿਆਂ ਦੀ ਉਮੀਦ ਕਰਕੇ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਸੀ, ਓੱਥੇ ਸਿਰਫ਼ 10 ਪੈਮਾਨੇ ਹੀ ਹੁੰਦੇ ਸਨ। ਜਦੋਂ ਕੋਈ ਸ਼ਰਾਬ ਦੀ ਕੁਲਹਾੜੀ ਵਿੱਚੋਂ 50 ਮਰਤਬਾਨ ਸ਼ਰਾਬ ਦੇ ਕੱਢਣ ਲਈ ਗਿਆ, ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਸਿਰਫ਼ 20 ਹੀ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਹੋਏ। 17 ਕਿਉਂ ਕਿ ਮੈਂ ਤੁਹਾਨੂੰ ਦੰਡ ਦਿੱਤਾ। ਮੈਂ ਬੀਮਾਰੀ ਭੇਜੀ ਜਿਸ ਨੇ ਤੁਹਾਡੀ ਫ਼ਸਲ ਤਬਾਹ ਕੀਤੀ, ਤੇ ਮੈਂ ਗੜਿਆਂ ਦੀ ਮਾਰ ਤੁਹਾਨੂੰ ਮਾਰੀ ਜਿਸ ਨਾਲ ਤੁਹਾਡੇ ਹੱਥ ਦੀਆਂ ਬਣੀਆਂ ਵਸਤਾਂ ਨਸ਼ਟ ਹੋ ਗਈਆਂ। ਇਹ ਸਭ ਕੁਝ ਮੈਂ ਤੁਹਾਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੇ ਵੱਲ ਪਰਤਣ ਲਈ ਕੀਤਾ, ਪਰ ਤੁਸੀਂ ਨਾ ਮੁੜੇ।’ ਯਹੋਵਾਹ ਨੇ ਇਹ ਗੱਲਾਂ ਆਖੀਆਂ।
18 “ਯਹੋਵਾਹ ਨੇ ਆਖਿਆ, ‘ਅੱਜ ਵੇਂ ਮਹੀਨੇ ਦਾ 24ਵਾਂ ਦਿਨ ਹੈ। ਤੁਸੀਂ ਯਹੋਵਾਹ ਦੇ ਮੰਦਰ ਦੀ ਨੀਂਹ ਰੱਖਣ ਦਾ ਕੰਮ ਮੁਕੰਮਲ ਕਰ ਲਿਆ ਹੈ। ਸੋ ਖਿਆਲ ਰੱਖਿਓ ਕਿ ਹ੍ਹੁਣ ਤੋਂ ਅਗਾਂਹ ਕੀ ਵਾਪਰਦਾ! 19 ਕੀ ਅਜੇ ਵੀ ਪਿੜ ਵਿੱਚ ਕੋਈ ਅਜਿਹਾ ਅਨਾਜ ਦਾ ਦਾਣਾ ਬਾਕੀ ਹੈ ਜੋ ਬੀਜਿਆ ਨਹੀਂ ਗਿਆ? ਨਹੀਂ! ਕੀ ਅੰਗੂਰ ਦੀਆਂ ਵੇਲਾਂ, ਅੰਜੀਰ ਦੇ ਦ੍ਰੱਖਤ, ਅਨਾਰ ਅਤੇ ਜੈਤੂਨ ਦੇ ਦ੍ਰੱਖਤ ਕੋਈ ਫ਼ਲ ਦੇ ਰਹੇ ਹਨ? ਨਹੀਂ! ਪਰ ਅੱਜ ਤੋਂ, ਮੈਂ ਤੁਹਾਨੂੰ ਚੰਗੀ ਵਾਢੀ ਦੀ ਬਰਕਤ ਦੇਵਾਂਗਾ।”
20 ਮਹੀਨੇ ਦੇ 24 ਵੇਂ ਦਿਨ ਹੀ ਹੱਜਈ ਨਬੀ ਨੂੰ ਯਹੋਵਾਹ ਦੀ ਇੱਕ ਹੋਰ ਬਾਣੀ ਪ੍ਰਗਟ ਹੋਈ। ਉਹ ਸੰਦੇਸ਼ ਹੈ। 21 “ਯਹੂਦਾਹ ਦੇ ਰਾਜਪਾਲ ਜ਼ਰੁੱਬਾਬਲ ਕੋਲ ਜਾਕੇ ਆਖ ਕਿ ਮੈਂ ਅਕਾਸ਼ ਅਤੇ ਧਰਤੀ ਨੂੰ ਹਿਲਾ ਦਿਆਂਗਾ। 22 ਅਤੇ ਮੈਂ ਬਹੁਤ ਸਾਰੇ ਰਾਜਿਆਂ ਅਤੇ ਰਾਜਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਉਲਟਾ ਦਿਆਂਗਾ। ਮੈਂ ਦੂਜੇ ਰਾਜਾਂ ਦੀ ਸੱਤਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਵੀ ਖਤਮ ਦਿਆਂਗਾ। ਮੈਂ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੇ ਰੱਥ ਅਤੇ ਰਬਵਾਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਨਸ਼ਟ ਕਰ ਸੁੱਟਾਂਗਾ। ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੇ ਘੋੜੇ ਡਿੱਗ ਪੈਣਗੇ ਅਤੇ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੇ ਘੋੜ-ਸਵਾਰ ਇੱਕ ਦੂਜੇ ਨੂੰ ਮਾਰਨਗੇ। 23 ਹੇ ਮੇਰੇ ਸੇਵਕ, ਸ਼ਅਲਤੀਏਲ ਦੇ ਪੁੱਤਰ ਜ਼ਰੁੱਬਾਬਲ, ਉਸ ਦਿਨ, ਮੈਂ ਤੈਨੂੰ ਲਵਾਂਗਾ ਅਤੇ ਇੱਕ ਮੋਹਰ ਵਾਲੀ ਅੰਗੂਠੀ ਵਾਂਗ ਬਣਾਵਾਂਗਾ, ਕਿਉਂ ਕਿ ਮੈਂ ਤੈਨੂੰ ਚੁਣਿਆ ਹੈ।”
ਯਹੋਵਾਹ ਸਰਬ ਸ਼ਕਤੀਮਾਨ ਨੇ ਇਓਁ ਆਖਿਆ।

Segundo mensaje: La presencia del Señor
2 El día veintiuno del mes séptimo, vino palabra del Señor por medio del profeta Hageo: 2 «Pregunta a Zorobabel, hijo de Salatiel y gobernador de Judá, al sumo sacerdote Josué, hijo de Josadac, y al resto del pueblo: 3 “¿Queda alguien entre ustedes que haya visto este Templo en su antiguo esplendor? ¿Qué les parece ahora? ¿No lo ven como muy poca cosa? 4 Pues ahora, ¡ánimo, Zorobabel!”, afirma el Señor. “¡Sé fuerte, Josué, hijo de Josadac! ¡Tú eres el sumo sacerdote! ¡Sé fuerte, pueblo de esta tierra!”, afirma el Señor. “¡Manos a la obra, que yo estoy con ustedes!”, afirma el Señor de los Ejércitos. 5 “Mi Espíritu permanece en medio de ustedes, conforme al pacto que hice con ustedes cuando salieron de Egipto. No teman”.
6 »Así dice el Señor de los Ejércitos: “Dentro de muy poco haré que se estremezcan los cielos y la tierra, el mar y la tierra firme. 7 Haré temblar a todas las naciones y lo deseado por todas ellas llegará aquí. Así llenaré de esplendor este Templo”, dice el Señor de los Ejércitos. 8 “Mía es la plata y mío es el oro”, afirma el Señor de los Ejércitos. 9 “El esplendor de esta segunda casa será mayor que el de la primera”, dice el Señor de los Ejércitos. “Y en este lugar concederé la paz”», afirma el Señor de los Ejércitos.
Tercer mensaje: Consulta a los sacerdotes
10 El día veinticuatro del mes noveno del segundo año de Darío, vino palabra del Señor al profeta Hageo: 11 «Así dice el Señor de los Ejércitos: “Consulta a los sacerdotes sobre lo que dice la Ley”». Entonces Hageo planteó lo siguiente:
12 —Supongamos que alguien lleva carne consagrada en la falda de su vestido y sucede que la falda toca el pan, el guiso, el vino, aceite o cualquier otro alimento; ¿quedarán también consagrados?
—¡No! —contestaron los sacerdotes.
13 —Supongamos ahora —prosiguió Hageo—, que una persona impura por el contacto de un cadáver toca cualquiera de estas cosas; ¿también ellas quedarán impuras?
—¡Sí! —contestaron los sacerdotes.
14 Entonces Hageo respondió:
«¡Así es este pueblo!
¡Así es para mí esta nación!»,
afirma el Señor.
«¡Así es cualquier obra de sus manos!
¡Todo lo que allí ofrecen es impuro!
15 »Ahora bien, desde hoy en adelante, reflexionen. Antes de que ustedes pusieran piedra sobre piedra en el Templo del Señor, ¿cómo les iba? 16 Cuando alguien se acercaba a un montón de grano esperando encontrar veinte medidas, solo hallaba diez; y, si se iba al lagar esperando sacar cincuenta medidas del contenedor del mosto, solo sacaba veinte. 17 Castigué con plaga, peste y granizo toda obra de sus manos. Sin embargo, ustedes no se volvieron[a] a mí», afirma el Señor. 18 «Reflexionen desde hoy en adelante, día veinticuatro del mes noveno, día en que se pusieron los cimientos del Templo del Señor. Reflexionen: 19 ¿Queda todavía alguna semilla en el granero? Hasta ahora, la vid, la higuera, el granado y el olivo no han dado frutos. ¡Pero a partir de hoy yo los bendeciré!».
Cuarto mensaje: Promesas a Zorobabel
20 El día veinticuatro del mismo mes vino por segunda vez palabra del Señor a Hageo: 21 «Di a Zorobabel, gobernador de Judá: “Yo estoy por estremecer los cielos y la tierra. 22 Destruiré los tronos reales y haré pedazos el poderío de los reinos del mundo. Volcaré los carros con sus conductores y caerán caballos y jinetes; se matarán a espada unos a otros. 23 En aquel día —afirma el Señor de los Ejércitos—, te tomaré a ti, mi siervo Zorobabel, hijo de Salatiel —dice el Señor—, y te haré semejante a un anillo de sellar, porque yo te he elegido”, declara el Señor de los Ejércitos».

2 In the seventh month, on the twenty-first of the month, the word of the Lord came [a]by Haggai the prophet, saying: 2 “Speak now to Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, and to Joshua the son of Jehozadak, the high priest, and to the remnant of the people, saying: 3 (A)‘Who is left among you who saw this [b]temple in its former glory? And how do you see it now? In comparison with it, (B)is this not in your eyes as nothing? 4 Yet now (C)be strong, Zerubbabel,’ says the Lord; ‘and be strong, Joshua, son of Jehozadak, the high priest; and be strong, all you people of the land,’ says the Lord, ‘and work; for I am with you,’ says the Lord of hosts. 5 (D)‘According to the word that I covenanted with you when you came out of Egypt, so (E)My Spirit remains among you; do not fear!’
6 “For thus says the Lord of hosts: (F)‘Once more (it is a little while) (G)I will shake heaven and earth, the sea and dry land; 7 and I will shake all nations, and they shall come to (H)the [c]Desire of All Nations, and I will fill this [d]temple with (I)glory,’ says the Lord of hosts. 8 ‘The silver is Mine, and the gold is Mine,’ says the Lord of hosts. 9 (J)‘The glory of this latter [e]temple shall be greater than the former,’ says the Lord of hosts. ‘And in this place I will give (K)peace,’ says the Lord of hosts.”
The People Are Defiled
10 On the twenty-fourth day of the ninth month, in the second year of Darius, the word of the Lord came by Haggai the prophet, saying, 11 “Thus says the Lord of hosts: ‘Now, (L)ask the priests concerning the law, saying, 12 “If one carries holy meat in the fold of his garment, and with the edge he touches bread or stew, wine or oil, or any food, will it become holy?” ’ ”
Then the priests answered and said, “No.”
13 And Haggai said, “If one who is (M)unclean because of a dead body touches any of these, will it be unclean?”
So the priests answered and said, “It shall be unclean.”
14 Then Haggai answered and said, (N)“ ‘So is this people, and so is this nation before Me,’ says the Lord, ‘and so is every work of their hands; and what they offer there is unclean.
Promised Blessing
15 ‘And now, carefully (O)consider from this day forward: from before stone was laid upon stone in the temple of the Lord— 16 since those days, (P)when one came to a heap of twenty ephahs, there were but ten; when one came to the wine vat to draw out fifty baths from the press, there were but twenty. 17 (Q)I struck you with blight and mildew and hail (R)in all the labors of your hands; (S)yet you did not turn to Me,’ says the Lord. 18 ‘Consider now from this day forward, from the twenty-fourth day of the ninth month, from (T)the day that the foundation of the Lord’s temple was laid—consider it: 19 (U)Is the seed still in the barn? As yet the vine, the fig tree, the pomegranate, and the olive tree have not yielded fruit. But from this day I will (V)bless you.’ ”
Zerubbabel Chosen as a Signet
20 And again the word of the Lord came to Haggai on the twenty-fourth day of the month, saying, 21 “Speak to Zerubbabel, (W)governor of Judah, saying:
(X)‘I will shake heaven and earth.
22 (Y)I will overthrow the throne of kingdoms;
I will destroy the strength of the Gentile kingdoms.
(Z)I will overthrow the chariots
And those who ride in them;
The horses and their riders shall come down,
Every one by the sword of his brother.
23 ‘In that day,’ says the Lord of hosts, ‘I will take you, Zerubbabel My servant, the son of Shealtiel,’ says the Lord, (AA)‘and will make you like a signet ring; for (AB)I have chosen you,’ says the Lord of hosts.”

2 1 on the twenty-first day of the seventh month,(A) the word of the Lord came through the prophet Haggai:(B) 2 “Speak to Zerubbabel(C) son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, to Joshua son of Jozadak,[a](D) the high priest, and to the remnant(E) of the people. Ask them, 3 ‘Who of you is left who saw this house(F) in its former glory? How does it look to you now? Does it not seem to you like nothing?(G) 4 But now be strong, Zerubbabel,’ declares the Lord. ‘Be strong,(H) Joshua son of Jozadak,(I) the high priest. Be strong, all you people of the land,’ declares the Lord, ‘and work. For I am with(J) you,’ declares the Lord Almighty. 5 ‘This is what I covenanted(K) with you when you came out of Egypt.(L) And my Spirit(M) remains among you. Do not fear.’(N)
6 “This is what the Lord Almighty says: ‘In a little while(O) I will once more shake the heavens and the earth,(P) the sea and the dry land. 7 I will shake all nations, and what is desired(Q) by all nations will come, and I will fill this house(R) with glory,(S)’ says the Lord Almighty. 8 ‘The silver is mine and the gold(T) is mine,’ declares the Lord Almighty. 9 ‘The glory(U) of this present house(V) will be greater than the glory of the former house,’ says the Lord Almighty. ‘And in this place I will grant peace,(W)’ declares the Lord Almighty.”
Blessings for a Defiled People
10 On the twenty-fourth day of the ninth month,(X) in the second year of Darius, the word of the Lord came to the prophet Haggai: 11 “This is what the Lord Almighty says: ‘Ask the priests(Y) what the law says: 12 If someone carries consecrated meat(Z) in the fold of their garment, and that fold touches some bread or stew, some wine, olive oil or other food, does it become consecrated?(AA)’”
The priests answered, “No.”
13 Then Haggai said, “If a person defiled by contact with a dead body touches one of these things, does it become defiled?”
“Yes,” the priests replied, “it becomes defiled.(AB)”
14 Then Haggai said, “‘So it is with this people(AC) and this nation in my sight,’ declares the Lord. ‘Whatever they do and whatever they offer(AD) there is defiled.
15 “‘Now give careful thought(AE) to this from this day on[b]—consider how things were before one stone was laid(AF) on another in the Lord’s temple.(AG) 16 When anyone came to a heap(AH) of twenty measures, there were only ten. When anyone went to a wine vat(AI) to draw fifty measures, there were only twenty.(AJ) 17 I struck all the work of your hands(AK) with blight,(AL) mildew and hail,(AM) yet you did not return(AN) to me,’ declares the Lord.(AO) 18 ‘From this day on, from this twenty-fourth day of the ninth month, give careful thought(AP) to the day when the foundation(AQ) of the Lord’s temple was laid. Give careful thought: 19 Is there yet any seed left in the barn? Until now, the vine and the fig tree, the pomegranate(AR) and the olive tree have not borne fruit.(AS)
“‘From this day on I will bless(AT) you.’”
Zerubbabel the Lord’s Signet Ring
20 The word of the Lord came to Haggai(AU) a second time on the twenty-fourth day of the month:(AV) 21 “Tell Zerubbabel(AW) governor of Judah that I am going to shake(AX) the heavens and the earth. 22 I will overturn(AY) royal thrones and shatter the power of the foreign kingdoms.(AZ) I will overthrow chariots(BA) and their drivers; horses and their riders(BB) will fall, each by the sword of his brother.(BC)
23 “‘On that day,(BD)’ declares the Lord Almighty, ‘I will take you, my servant(BE) Zerubbabel(BF) son of Shealtiel,’ declares the Lord, ‘and I will make you like my signet ring,(BG) for I have chosen you,’ declares the Lord Almighty.”
