फारोसमोर मोशे व अहरोन
5 मोशे व अहरोन इस्राएल लोकांशी बोलल्यानांतर फारोकडे गेले व त्याला म्हणाले, “इस्राएल लोकांचा देव [a] म्हणतो, ‘माझ्या लोकांना माझ्या सन्मानाकरिता उत्सव करावयास रानात जाऊ द्यावे.’”
2 परंतु फारो म्हणाला, “हा परमेश्वर कोण आहे? आणि मी त्याचे का ऐकावे? मी इस्राएल लोकांना का जाऊ द्यावे? तुम्ही परमेश्वर म्हणता तो कोण आहे हे मला माहीत नाही. म्हणून इस्राएल लोकांस मी जाऊ देत नाही.”
3 मग अहरोन व मोशे म्हणाले, “इब्री लोकांचा म्हणजे इस्राएल लोकांचा देव आम्हाशी बोलला आहे. म्हणून आम्हाला रानात तीन दिवसांच्या वाटेवर जाऊ द्यावे आणि तेथे आमचा देव परमेश्वर या करिता यज्ञार्पण करु द्यावे अशी आम्ही आपणाला विनंती करतो. आणि आम्ही जर असे केले नाही तर कदाचित् त्याला फार राग येईल व तो रोगराईने किंवा तलवारीने आमचा नाश करेल.”
4 परंतु फारो त्यांना म्हणाला, “हे मोशे, हे अहरोना, तुम्ही त्रास निर्माण करून घेत आहात! तुम्ही लोकांना काम करू देत नाही; तुम्ही त्यांच्या कामात अडथळा आणीत आहात! त्या गुलामांना आपल्या कामावर माघारी जाण्यास सांगा! 5 येथे खूप कामगार आहेत आणि त्यांना काम करण्यापासून तुम्ही रोखत आहात!”
फारो लोकांना शिक्षा देतो
6 त्याच दिवशी इस्राएल लोकांचे काम अधिक खडतर करण्यासाठी फारोने मुकादमांना व नायकांना आज्ञा दिली. 7 तो त्यांना म्हणाला, “तुम्ही ह्या लोकांना विटा बनविण्याकरिता आज पर्यंत सतत गवत दिलेले आहे. परंतु आता त्यांना लागणारे गवत त्यांना स्वतः शोधून आणण्यास सांगा. 8 तरी परंतु पूर्वी इतक्याच विटा त्यांनी बनविल्या पाहिजेत. ते आळशी झाले आहेत आणि म्हणूनच त्यांच्या देवाला यज्ञ करण्यासाठी त्यांना जाऊ देण्याविषयी ते मला विचारत आहेत. 9 तेव्हा त्यांच्यावर अधिक काम लादून त्यांना सतत कामात ठेवा. म्हणजे मग मोशेच्या खोट्या गोष्टी ऐकण्यास त्यांना वेळ मिळणार नाही.”
10 म्हणून मिसरचे मुकादम व इस्राएली किंवा इब्री नायक इस्राएल लोकांकडे जाऊन म्हणाले, “फारोने तुम्हाला विटा बनविण्यासाठी लागणारे गवत न देण्याचे ठरवले आहे. 11 तेव्हा तुम्हाला लागणारे गवत तुम्ही स्वतःच आणले पाहिजे म्हणून आता जाऊन तुमच्यासाठी गवत आणा परंतु पूर्वीइतक्याच विटा तुम्ही बनविल्या पाहिजेत.”
12 म्हणून मग इस्राएल लोक गवत शोधण्याकरिता सर्व मिसर देशभर पांगले. 13 त्यांच्यावर नेमलेले मुकादम त्यांच्याकडून अधिक काम करवून घेऊन पूर्वी इतक्याच विटा तयार करण्याकरिता त्याच्या मागे सतत तगादा लावीत. 14 मिसरच्या मुकादमांनी लोकांवर इब्री म्हणजे इस्राएली नायक नेमले होते. लोकांनी केलेल्या कामासाठी त्यांना जबाबदार धरले जाई. मिसरचे मुकादम इस्राएली नायकांना मारीत व म्हणत, “तुम्ही पूर्वी जेवढ्या विटा बनवीत होता तेवढ्या आता का बनवीत नाही? तुम्ही जर त्यावेळी तेवढ्या विटा करीत होता तर मग आताही तेवढ्याच विटा करु शकला पाहिजे!”
15 मग इस्राएली नायक तक्रार घेऊन फारोकडे गेले व म्हणाले, “आम्ही जे तुमचे सेवक त्या आमच्याशी तुम्ही अशाप्रकारे का वागत आहा? 16 तुम्ही आम्हाला गवत देत नाही परंतु पूर्वी इतक्याच विटा बनविण्याचा हुकूम करता. आणि आता आमचे मुकादम आम्हाला मारतात. अशा रीतीने तुमचे लोक जे करीत आहेत ते चुकीचे आहे.”
17 फारोने उत्तर दिले, “तुम्ही लोक आळशी आहा. तुम्हाला काम करायला नको आणि म्हणूनच तुम्हाला जाऊ देण्याविषयी तुम्ही मला विचारता आणि त्या करिताच तुम्हाला येथून निघून जायला आणि तुमच्या परमेश्वराला यज्ञ करावयास पाहिजे. 18 आता आपल्या कामावर माघारी जा. आम्ही तुम्हाला गवत देणार नाही परंतु पूर्वी इतक्याच विटा तुम्ही केल्या पाहिजेत.”
19 आपण संकटात आहोत हे इस्राएली नायकांना समजले. कारण पूर्वी इतक्याच विटा करून देणे त्यांना शक्य नव्हते.
20 फारोच्या भेटीनंतर परत जाताना त्यांना मोशे व अहरोन भेटले; ते नायकांसाठीच थांबले होते. 21 तेव्हा ते मोशे व अहरोनास म्हणले, “आम्हाला जाऊ द्यावे असे फारोला विचारून तुम्ही मोठे वाईट केले. फारो व त्याचे अधिकारी यांच्या मनात आमच्या विरुद्ध द्वेष निर्माण केल्याबद्दल परमेश्वर तुम्हाला शिक्षा करो. आम्हास मारून टाकण्यास तुम्ही त्यांना चांगले निमित्त दिले आहे.”
मोशे देवाकडे तक्रार करतो
22 मग मोशे परमेश्वराची प्रार्थना करीत म्हणाला, “प्रभु तुझ्या लोकांसाठी ही वाईट गोष्ट तू का केलीस? तू मला इकडे का पाठवलेस? 23 मी फारोकडे जाऊन तू मला सांगितलेल्या गोष्टी त्याला सांगितल्या. परंतु त्या वेळेपासून तो लोकांशी अधिक कठोरपणे वागत आहे. आणि त्यांच्या मदतीकरिता तू काहीच केले नाहीस!”

Moses and Aaron speak to Pharaoh
5 After this, Moses and Aaron went to visit Pharaoh. They said to him, ‘Listen to what the Lord says. He is the God of Israel. He says, “Let my people go. Let them prepare a feast in the desert to worship me.” ’
2 But Pharaoh said, ‘The Lord is not my god. I do not need to obey him. I do not have to let the Israelites go. I do not know the Lord. I will not let the Israelites go.’
3 Moses and Aaron said, ‘The God of the Israelites has met us. Please let us go. We must go on a journey of three days into the desert. There we must give gifts to the Lord our God. If we do not do this, God may punish us. We may become very ill, or people may attack us in war.’
4 But the king of Egypt said, ‘Moses and Aaron, you must not take the people away from their work! Go back to your jobs!’ 5 Pharaoh said, ‘Look, there are now many of your people who live in my country. But you are taking them away from their work.’
6 On that day, Pharaoh gave a command to the masters of the slaves, and to the leaders of the work. 7 This was the command: ‘Do not give the people any more straw to make bricks. Now they must go and find their own straw. 8 But they must still make the same number of bricks as they did before. Do not let them make fewer bricks. These people are lazy. That is why they are complaining. They say, “We want to go and offer sacrifices to our God.” 9 Make the work more difficult for them to do. They will have to do very hard work. They will be too busy to listen to the lies of their leaders.’[a]
10 So the slaves' masters and the leaders of the work went to the Israelite people. They said to them, ‘Pharaoh says, “Now I will not give you straw. 11 You must try to find straw for yourselves. But you will still have to make the same number of bricks.” ’
12 So the people went everywhere in the land of Egypt, to get straw from the fields. 13 The slaves' masters made the Israelites work quickly. They said, ‘Finish all your work for each day, as much as when we gave straw to you.’ 14 Pharaoh's slave masters hit the Israelite leaders who had authority over the people. They said to them, ‘Why have you not made the complete number of bricks today, as you did before?’
15 Then the Israelite leaders of the work went to Pharaoh. They asked him, ‘Please sir, why do you do these things to us, your servants? 16 Our masters no longer give us any straw. But they say “Make bricks!” Then they hit us. But it is your people who are doing wrong things, not us.’
17 But Pharaoh said, ‘You Israelites are just lazy people! That is why you say, “Let us go to offer sacrifices to the Lord.” 18 Now go back and do your work. Nobody will give you any straw. But you must make the complete number of bricks.’
19 The Israelite work leaders heard Pharaoh say, ‘You must still make the same number of bricks as you made before.’ Then they knew that they were in trouble. 20 When they left Pharaoh, they met Moses and Aaron. Moses and Aaron were waiting for them to return from Pharaoh. 21 The work leaders said to Moses and Aaron, ‘We hope that the Lord will punish you! You have made us like a bad smell to Pharaoh and to his officers. You have given them a reason to kill us.’
22 Then Moses returned to the Lord. He said, ‘My Lord, why have you brought trouble to these people? Why did you send me to lead them? 23 I went to speak to Pharaoh with your authority. But since I spoke to Pharaoh, he has caused these people to have trouble. And you have done nothing to save your people.’

- 5:9 When they made bricks, they mixed straw with the clay. This made the bricks stronger. Pharaoh was making the Israelites do work that was even harder. Now they had to look for straw before they could use it in the bricks.

2 And Pharaoh said, Who is the Lord, that I should obey his voice to let Israel go? I know not the Lord, neither will I let Israel go.
3 And they said, The God of the Hebrews hath met with us: let us go, we pray thee, three days' journey into the desert, and sacrifice unto the Lord our God; lest he fall upon us with pestilence, or with the sword.
4 And the king of Egypt said unto them, Wherefore do ye, Moses and Aaron, let the people from their works? get you unto your burdens.
5 And Pharaoh said, Behold, the people of the land now are many, and ye make them rest from their burdens.
6 And Pharaoh commanded the same day the taskmasters of the people, and their officers, saying,
7 Ye shall no more give the people straw to make brick, as heretofore: let them go and gather straw for themselves.
8 And the tale of the bricks, which they did make heretofore, ye shall lay upon them; ye shall not diminish ought thereof: for they be idle; therefore they cry, saying, Let us go and sacrifice to our God.
9 Let there more work be laid upon the men, that they may labour therein; and let them not regard vain words.
10 And the taskmasters of the people went out, and their officers, and they spake to the people, saying, Thus saith Pharaoh, I will not give you straw.
11 Go ye, get you straw where ye can find it: yet not ought of your work shall be diminished.
12 So the people were scattered abroad throughout all the land of Egypt to gather stubble instead of straw.
13 And the taskmasters hasted them, saying, Fulfil your works, your daily tasks, as when there was straw.
14 And the officers of the children of Israel, which Pharaoh's taskmasters had set over them, were beaten, and demanded, Wherefore have ye not fulfilled your task in making brick both yesterday and to day, as heretofore?
15 Then the officers of the children of Israel came and cried unto Pharaoh, saying, Wherefore dealest thou thus with thy servants?
16 There is no straw given unto thy servants, and they say to us, Make brick: and, behold, thy servants are beaten; but the fault is in thine own people.
17 But he said, Ye are idle, ye are idle: therefore ye say, Let us go and do sacrifice to the Lord.
18 Go therefore now, and work; for there shall no straw be given you, yet shall ye deliver the tale of bricks.
19 And the officers of the children of Israel did see that they were in evil case, after it was said, Ye shall not minish ought from your bricks of your daily task.
20 And they met Moses and Aaron, who stood in the way, as they came forth from Pharaoh:
21 And they said unto them, The Lord look upon you, and judge; because ye have made our savour to be abhorred in the eyes of Pharaoh, and in the eyes of his servants, to put a sword in their hand to slay us.
22 And Moses returned unto the Lord, and said, Lord, wherefore hast thou so evil entreated this people? why is it that thou hast sent me?
23 For since I came to Pharaoh to speak in thy name, he hath done evil to this people; neither hast thou delivered thy people at all.

Bricks Without Straw
5 Afterward Moses and Aaron went to Pharaoh and said, “This is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says: ‘Let my people go,(A) so that they may hold a festival(B) to me in the wilderness.’”
2 Pharaoh said, “Who is the Lord,(C) that I should obey him and let Israel go? I do not know the Lord and I will not let Israel go.”(D)
3 Then they said, “The God of the Hebrews has met with us. Now let us take a three-day journey(E) into the wilderness to offer sacrifices to the Lord our God, or he may strike us with plagues(F) or with the sword.”
4 But the king of Egypt said, “Moses and Aaron, why are you taking the people away from their labor?(G) Get back to your work!” 5 Then Pharaoh said, “Look, the people of the land are now numerous,(H) and you are stopping them from working.”
6 That same day Pharaoh gave this order to the slave drivers(I) and overseers in charge of the people: 7 “You are no longer to supply the people with straw for making bricks;(J) let them go and gather their own straw. 8 But require them to make the same number of bricks as before; don’t reduce the quota.(K) They are lazy;(L) that is why they are crying out, ‘Let us go and sacrifice to our God.’(M) 9 Make the work harder for the people so that they keep working and pay no attention to lies.”
10 Then the slave drivers(N) and the overseers went out and said to the people, “This is what Pharaoh says: ‘I will not give you any more straw. 11 Go and get your own straw wherever you can find it, but your work will not be reduced(O) at all.’” 12 So the people scattered all over Egypt to gather stubble to use for straw. 13 The slave drivers kept pressing them, saying, “Complete the work required of you for each day, just as when you had straw.” 14 And Pharaoh’s slave drivers beat the Israelite overseers they had appointed,(P) demanding, “Why haven’t you met your quota of bricks yesterday or today, as before?”
15 Then the Israelite overseers went and appealed to Pharaoh: “Why have you treated your servants this way? 16 Your servants are given no straw, yet we are told, ‘Make bricks!’ Your servants are being beaten, but the fault is with your own people.”
17 Pharaoh said, “Lazy, that’s what you are—lazy!(Q) That is why you keep saying, ‘Let us go and sacrifice to the Lord.’ 18 Now get to work.(R) You will not be given any straw, yet you must produce your full quota of bricks.”
19 The Israelite overseers realized they were in trouble when they were told, “You are not to reduce the number of bricks required of you for each day.” 20 When they left Pharaoh, they found Moses and Aaron waiting to meet them, 21 and they said, “May the Lord look on you and judge(S) you! You have made us obnoxious(T) to Pharaoh and his officials and have put a sword(U) in their hand to kill us.”(V)
God Promises Deliverance
22 Moses returned to the Lord and said, “Why, Lord, why have you brought trouble on this people?(W) Is this why you sent me? 23 Ever since I went to Pharaoh to speak in your name, he has brought trouble on this people, and you have not rescued(X) your people at all.”
