23 Тогава Валаам каза на Валак: „Издигни ми тук седем жертвеника и ми приготви седем телета и седем овена.“ 2 Валак направи така, както каза Валаам; и Валак и Валаам принесоха по едно теле и по един овен на всеки жертвеник. 3 После Валаам каза на Валак: „Застани близо до всеизгарянето си; аз пък ще отида по-нататък, дано Господ ме посрещне. Каквото Той ми открие, аз ще ти кажа.“ И Валаам се изкачи на една гола височина. 4 И Бог срещна Валаам, а Валаам Му каза: „Издигнах седем жертвеника и принесох по едно теле и по един овен на всеки жертвеник.“ 5 Господ вложи слово в устата на Валаам и рече: „Върни се при Валак и говори така!“ 6 И като се върна при него, той стоеше при всеизгарянето си заедно с всички моавски предводители. 7 Тогава Валаам започна притчата си с думите:
„От Арам, от източните планини ме доведе Валак,
моавският цар, и ми рече:
‘Ела, прокълни заради мене Яков, ела и кажи зла дума против Израил!’
8 Как да прокълна, когото Бог не проклина?
Как да кажа зла дума,
против когото Бог не казва зла дума?
9 Защото от връх канарите го виждам
и от хълмовете го гледам:
‘Ето народ, който ще се засели отделно
и няма да е сред останалите народи.
10 Кой може да преброи безбройния като пясъка Яков
и десетките хиляди на Израил?
Дано смъртта ми да е като смъртта на праведните
и сетнините ми да бъдат като техните!’“
11 Тогава Валак каза на Валаам: „Какво стори ти с мене? Аз те взех да прокълнеш враговете ми, а ето, ти дори ги благослови!“ 12 А той отговори: „Нима не трябва да казвам тъкмо онова, което Господ влага в устата ми?“
13 Тогава Валак му рече: „Ела с мене на друго място, откъдето ще ги видиш; но ще видиш само най-близката част от стана им, всичките няма да ги видиш; и прокълни ги оттам заради мене.“ 14 И така, той го заведе на мястото за стража на върха на Фасга; там издигна седем жертвеника и принесе по едно теле и по един овен на всеки жертвеник. 15 Тогава Валаам му каза: „Застани близо до всеизгарянето си, а пък аз ще отида по-нататък да срещна Бога.“ 16 И Господ срещна Валаам и вложи слово в устата му, като каза: „Върни се при Валак и говори така!“ 17 Валаам се върна при него, а той стоеше при всеизгарянето си заедно с моавските предводители. 19 (A)Бог не е смъртен, за да лъже,

23 (A)*Balaam disse a Balac: «Costruiscimi qui sette altari e preparami qui sette tori e sette montoni». 2 Balac fece come Balaam aveva detto, e Balac e Balaam offrirono un toro e un montone su ciascun altare. 3 E Balaam disse a Balac: «Sta' vicino al tuo olocausto e io mi allontanerò; forse il Signore mi verrà incontro; e io riferirò quello che mi avrà fatto vedere»; e andò sopra una nuda altura.
4 Dio venne incontro a Balaam, e Balaam gli disse: «Io ho preparato i sette altari e ho offerto un toro e un montone su ciascun altare». 5 Allora il Signore mise delle parole in bocca a Balaam e gli disse: «Torna da Balac e parla cosí».
6 Balaam tornò da Balac, ed ecco che questi stava vicino al suo olocausto con tutti i príncipi di *Moab.
7 Allora Balaam pronunziò il suo oracolo:
«Balac mi ha fatto venire da Aram[a],
il re di Moab mi ha chiamato dalle montagne d'Oriente.
Vieni, disse, maledici *Giacobbe per me!

8 Come farò a maledirlo se Dio non l'ha maledetto?
Come farò a imprecare se il Signore non ha imprecato?
9 Io lo guardo dalla sommità delle rupi
e lo contemplo dall'alto dei colli;
ecco, è un popolo che dimora solo
e non è contato nel numero delle nazioni.
10 Chi può contare la polvere di Giacobbe
o calcolare il quarto d'Israele?
Possa io morire della morte dei giusti
e possa la mia fine essere simile alla loro!»
11 (B)Allora Balac disse a Balaam: «Che mi hai fatto? Ti ho preso per maledire i miei nemici ed ecco, non hai fatto che benedirli». 12 L'altro gli rispose e disse: «Non devo forse stare attento a dire soltanto ciò che il Signore mi mette in bocca?» 13 E Balac gli disse: «Ti prego, vieni con me in un altro luogo, da dove tu lo potrai vedere; tu di qui non ne puoi vedere che una parte; non lo puoi vedere tutto quanto; di là me lo maledirai». 14 E lo condusse al campo di Sofim, sulla cima del Pisga; costruí sette altari e offrí un toro e un montone su ciascun altare. 15 E Balaam disse a Balac: «Stattene qui vicino al tuo olocausto, e io andrò a incontrare il Signore». 16 E il Signore venne incontro a Balaam, gli mise delle parole in bocca e gli disse: «Torna da Balac e parla cosí».

25 (C)Allora Balac disse a Balaam: «Non lo maledire, ma almeno non benedire». 26 Ma Balaam rispose e disse a Balac: «Non ti ho forse detto: Io farò tutto quello che il Signore dirà?» 27 Balac disse a Balaam: «Ti prego, vieni, io ti condurrò in un altro luogo; forse piacerà a Dio che tu me lo maledica di là». 28 Balac dunque condusse Balaam in cima al Peor, che domina il deserto. 29 E Balaam disse a Balac: «Costruiscimi qui sette altari e preparami qui sette tori e sette montoni». 30 Balac fece come Balaam aveva detto, e offrí un toro e un montone su ciascun altare.

23 1 And Balaam said to Balak, “Build for me here seven altars, and provide for me here seven bulls and seven rams.” 2 Balak did as Balaam had said; and Balak and Balaam offered on each altar a bull and a ram. 3 And Balaam said to Balak, “Stand beside your burnt offering, and I will go; perhaps the Lord will come to meet me; and whatever he shows me I will tell you.” And he went to a bare height. 4 And God met Balaam; and Balaam said to him, “I have prepared the seven altars, and I have offered upon each altar a bull and a ram.” 5 And the Lord put a word in Balaam’s mouth, and said, “Return to Balak, and thus you shall speak.” 6 And he returned to him, and lo, he and all the princes of Moab were standing beside his burnt offering. 7 And Balaam took up his discourse, and said,
“From Aram Balak has brought me,
the king of Moab from the eastern mountains:
‘Come, curse Jacob for me,
and come, denounce Israel!’
8 How can I curse whom God has not cursed?
How can I denounce whom the Lord has not denounced?
9 For from the top of the mountains I see him,
from the hills I behold him;
lo, a people dwelling alone,
and not reckoning itself among the nations!
10 Who can count the dust of Jacob,
or number the fourth part[a] of Israel?
Let me die the death of the righteous,
and let my end be like his!”
11 And Balak said to Balaam, “What have you done to me? I took you to curse my enemies, and behold, you have done nothing but bless them.” 12 And he answered, “Must I not take heed to speak what the Lord puts in my mouth?”
Balaam’s Second Oracle
13 And Balak said to him, “Come with me to another place, from which you may see them; you shall see only the nearest of them, and shall not see them all; then curse them for me from there.” 14 And he took him to the field of Zophim, to the top of Pisgah, and built seven altars, and offered a bull and a ram on each altar. 15 Balaam said to Balak, “Stand here beside your burnt offering, while I meet the Lord yonder.” 16 And the Lord met Balaam, and put a word in his mouth, and said, “Return to Balak, and thus shall you speak.” 17 And he came to him, and lo, he was standing beside his burnt offering, and the princes of Moab with him. And Balak said to him, “What has the Lord spoken?” 18 And Balaam took up his discourse, and said,
“Rise, Balak, and hear;
hearken to me, O son of Zippor:
19 God is not man, that he should lie,
or a son of man, that he should repent.
Has he said, and will he not do it?
Or has he spoken, and will he not fulfil it?
20 Behold, I received a command to bless:
he has blessed, and I cannot revoke it.
21 He has not beheld misfortune in Jacob;
nor has he seen trouble in Israel.
The Lord their God is with them,
and the shout of a king is among them.
22 God brings them out of Egypt;
they have as it were the horns of the wild ox.
23 For there is no enchantment against Jacob,
no divination against Israel;
now it shall be said of Jacob and Israel,
‘What has God wrought!’
24 Behold, a people! As a lioness it rises up
and as a lion it lifts itself;
it does not lie down till it devours the prey,
and drinks the blood of the slain.”
25 And Balak said to Balaam, “Neither curse them at all, nor bless them at all.” 26 But Balaam answered Balak, “Did I not tell you, ‘All that the Lord says, that I must do’?” 27 And Balak said to Balaam, “Come now, I will take you to another place; perhaps it will please God that you may curse them for me from there.” 28 So Balak took Balaam to the top of Pe′or, that overlooks the desert.[b] 29 And Balaam said to Balak, “Build for me here seven altars, and provide for me here seven bulls and seven rams.” 30 And Balak did as Balaam had said, and offered a bull and a ram on each altar.

5 And the Lord put a word in Balaam's mouth, and said, Return unto Balak, and thus thou shalt speak.
6 And he returned unto him, and, lo, he stood by his burnt sacrifice, he, and all the princes of Moab.
7 And he took up his parable, and said, Balak the king of Moab hath brought me from Aram, out of the mountains of the east, saying, Come, curse me Jacob, and come, defy Israel.

22 God brought them out of Egypt; he hath as it were the strength of an unicorn.
23 Surely there is no enchantment against Jacob, neither is there any divination against Israel: according to this time it shall be said of Jacob and of Israel, What hath God wrought!
24 Behold, the people shall rise up as a great lion, and lift up himself as a young lion: he shall not lie down until he eat of the prey, and drink the blood of the slain.
25 And Balak said unto Balaam, Neither curse them at all, nor bless them at all.
26 But Balaam answered and said unto Balak, Told not I thee, saying, All that the Lord speaketh, that I must do?
