Мятеж исраильтян
14 В ту ночь народ поднял крик и громко плакал. 2 Исраильтяне роптали на Мусу и Харуна. Люди говорили им:
– О, если бы мы умерли в Египте! Или здесь, в пустыне! 3 Зачем Вечный ведёт нас в эту землю? Мы падём в ней от меча, а наши жёны и дети попадут в плен. Не лучше ли нам вернуться в Египет?
4 Они говорили друг другу:
– Нам нужно выбрать вождя и вернуться в Египет.
5 Тогда Муса и Харун пали лицом на землю перед собравшимся обществом исраильтян. 6 Иешуа, сын Нуна, и Халев, сын Иефоннии, которые были среди тех, кто разведывал землю, в огорчении разорвали на себе одежду 7 и сказали собранию исраильтян:
– Земля, которую мы разведали, необыкновенно хороша. 8 Если Вечный благосклонен к нам, Он поведёт нас в эту землю, где течёт молоко и мёд, и отдаст её нам. 9 Не восставайте против Вечного. Молитва Мусы за народ
11 Вечный сказал Мусе:
– До каких пор этот народ будет презирать Меня? До каких пор они будут отказываться поверить в Меня, несмотря на все знамения, которые Я совершил среди них? 12 Я поражу их мором и истреблю, а от тебя произведу народ больше и сильнее их.
13 Муса сказал Вечному:
– Но об этом услышат египтяне, из среды которых Ты вывел Своей силой этот народ, 14 и они расскажут всё обитателям этой земли. Они уже слышали, что Ты, Вечный, с этим народом, и что Ты, Вечный, даёшь видеть Себя лицом к лицу, что Твоё облако стоит над ними, и что Ты идёшь перед ними в облачном столбе днём и в огненном – ночью. 15 Если Ты истребишь весь этот народ до единого человека, то народы, которые слышали о Тебе, скажут: 16 «Вечный не смог привести этот народ в землю, которую с клятвой обещал ему. Поэтому Он погубил его в пустыне». 17 Пусть откроется теперь сила Владыки, как Ты и говорил: 18 «Вечный долготерпелив, богат любовью и прощает грех и отступничество. Но Он не оправдывает виновных, карая детей за грехи отцов до третьего и четвёртого поколения». 19 По великой Своей любви прости грех этого народа, как прощал ему со времён Египта до сегодняшнего дня.
20 Вечный ответил:
– Я простил его по твоей просьбе. 21 Но верно, как и то, что Я живу и что Моя слава наполняет всю землю, – 22 никто из тех, кто видел Мою славу и знамения, которые Я совершил в Египте и в пустыне, но не послушался Меня и испытывал Меня десять раз, 23 никто из них не увидит землю, которую Я с клятвой обещал их предкам. Никто из тех, кто презирал Меня, её не увидит. 24 Но у Моего раба Халева иной дух, и он повинуется Мне от всего сердца. За это Я приведу его в землю, куда он ходил, и его потомки будут ею владеть. 25 Раз в долинах живут амаликитяне и хананеи, поверните завтра и ступайте в пустыню к Тростниковому морю[a].
Наказание за мятеж
26 Вечный сказал Мусе и Харуну:
27 – Сколько ещё этот грешный народ будет роптать на Меня? Я слышу всё, что говорят исраильтяне, когда ропщут на Меня. 28 Скажи им: «Верно, как и то, что Я живу, – возвещает Вечный, – что вы говорили, то Я и сделаю. 29 Ваши трупы будут брошены в этой пустыне, и никто из вас двадцати лет и старше, кто был исчислен при переписи и роптал на Меня, 30 не войдёт в землю, которую Я клялся с поднятой рукой сделать вашим домом, кроме Халева, сына Иефоннии, и Иешуа, сына Нуна. 31 Ваших детей, о которых вы говорили, что они попадут в плен, Я приведу, и они узнают землю, которую вы отвергли. 32 Что до вас, то ваши трупы будут брошены в этой пустыне. 33 Ваши дети будут там пастухами сорок лет, страдая за вашу неверность, пока последний из вас не падёт мёртвым в пустыне. 34 Сорок лет – по году за каждый из сорока дней, в которые вы разведывали землю – вы будете страдать за свой грех и узнаете, что значит враждовать со Мной». 35 Это сказал Я, Вечный. Я непременно сделаю так с этим грешным народом, который восстал против Меня. В этой пустыне они сгинут; они все умрут здесь.
36 Те, кого Муса посылал разведать землю, и кто, вернувшись, возмутил народ против него, ругая ту землю, 37 умерли перед Вечным от мора. 38 В живых остались только Иешуа, сын Нуна, и Халев, сын Иефоннии.
39 Когда Муса пересказал это исраильтянам, они горько заплакали. 40 Встав рано утром, они стали подниматься к вершинам нагорий. «Мы готовы, – говорили они. – Мы пойдём в тот край, что обещал Вечный; мы согрешили».
41 Но Муса сказал:
– Почему вы нарушаете повеление Вечного? Успеха вам не будет. 42 Не ходите, ведь Вечный не с вами. Вас разобьют враги, 43 ведь там вас встретят амаликитяне и хананеи. Вы отвернулись от Вечного, и Его не будет с вами; вы падёте от меча.
44 Но они дерзнули подняться к вершинам нагорий, хотя ни сундук соглашения, ни Муса не покидали лагерь[b]. 45 И амаликитяне с хананеями, жившие в нагорьях, спустились, разбили их и гнались за ними всю дорогу до Хормы.

Тростниковым морем могли называть как цепи озёр, расположенных на Суэцком перешейке и, вероятно, соединявшихся тогда проливами с Красным морем, так и Суэцкий и Акабский заливы Красного моря (см. карту № 2 на странице хх и, напр., 3 Цар. 9:26). В Инджиле эти же воды названы Красным морем.

Молитва Мусо за народ

14 Then all the Congregation lifted up their voice and cried. And the people wept that night.
2 And all the children of Israel murmured against Moses and Aaron. And the whole assembly said to them, “If only we had died in the land of Egypt, or in this wilderness. If only we were dead.
3 “Why has the LORD brought us into this land to fall upon the sword now? Our wives and our children shall be a prey. Would it not be better for us to return into Egypt?”
4 And they said to one another, “Let us make a captain and return into Egypt.”
5 Then Moses and Aaron fell on their faces before all the assembly of the Congregation of the children of Israel.
6 And Joshua, the son of Nun, and Caleb, the son of Jephunneh (two of them who searched the land), tore their clothes
7 and spoke to all the assembly of the children of Israel, saying, “The land through which we walked to search is a very good land!
8 “If the LORD loves us, He will bring us into this land and give it to us. It is a land that flows with milk and honey!
9 “But do not rebel against the LORD or fear the people of the land. For they are as bread to us! Their shield has departed from them; and the LORD is with us! Do not fear them!”
10 And all the multitude said, “Stone them with stones!” But the Glory of the LORD appeared in the Tabernacle of the Congregation, before all the children of Israel.
11 And the LORD said to Moses, “How long will this people provoke Me? And how long will it be before they believe Me, with all the signs which I have shown among them?
12 “I will strike them with the pestilence and destroy them and will make you a greater and mightier nation than they.”
13 But Moses said to the LORD, “When the Egyptians shall hear it (for You brought this people by Your power from among them),
14 “then they shall say to the inhabitants of the land (for they have heard that You, LORD, are among this people, and that You, LORD, are seen face to face, and that Your cloud stands over them, and that You go before them, by daytime in a pillar of a cloud, and in a pillar of fire by night)
15 “that You will kill this people as one man. So, the heathen which have heard the fame of You, shall then say,
16 ‘Because the LORD was not able to bring this people into the land which He swore to them, therefore He has killed them in the wilderness.’
17 “And now, I beg you, let the power of my LORD be great, as You have spoken, saying,
18 ‘The LORD is slow to anger and of great mercy and forgiving iniquity and sin, but not making the wicked innocent and visiting the wickedness of the fathers upon the children in the third and fourth generation.’
19 “Be merciful, I beg You, to the iniquity of this people, according to Your great mercy and as You have forgiven this people from Egypt even until now.”
20 And the LORD said, “I have forgiven it, according to your request.
21 “Nevertheless, as I live, all the Earth shall be filled with the Glory of the LORD.
22 “For all those men who have seen My Glory and My miracles which I did in Egypt and in the wilderness and have tempted Me these ten times and have not obeyed My Voice,
23 “certainly they shall not see the land which I swore to their fathers. Nor shall any who provoke Me see it.
24 “But My servant, Caleb, because he had another spirit and has followed Me still, him will I bring into the land where he went. And his seed shall inherit it.
25 “Now the Amalekites and the Canaanites remain in the valley. Turn tomorrow and go into the wilderness by the way of the Red Sea.”
26 Afterward, the LORD spoke to Moses and to Aaron, saying,
27 “How long shall I allow this wicked multitude to murmur against Me? I have heard the murmurings of the children of Israel, which they murmur against Me.
28 “Tell them, ‘As I live (says the LORD) I will surely do to you just as you have spoken in My Ears.
29 ‘Your carcasses shall fall in this wilderness, all you who were counted through all your numbers—from twenty years old and above—who have murmured against Me.
30 ‘Except for Caleb, the son of Jephunneh, and Joshua, the son of Nun, you shall doubtless not come into the land for which I lifted up My Hand to make you dwell in.
31 ‘But your children, which you said should be a prey, them I will bring in. And they shall know the land which you have refused.
32 ‘But even your carcasses shall fall in this wilderness.
33 ‘And your children shall wander in the wilderness forty years and shall bear your whoredoms until your carcasses are wasted in the wilderness.
34 ‘After the number of the days in which you searched out the land—forty days—for every day you shall bear your iniquity one year. For forty years you shall feel My breach of promise.
35 ‘I the LORD have said, “Certainly I will do so to all this wicked company who are gathered together against Me. In this wilderness they shall be consumed. And there they shall die.
36 “And the men whom Moses had sent to search the land (who, when they came back, made all the people murmur against him, and brought up a slander upon the land),
37 “even those men who brought up that vile slander upon the land, shall die by a plague before the LORD.
38 “But Joshua, the son of Nun, and Caleb, the son of Jephunneh, of those men who went to search the land, shall live.”’”
39 Then Moses told these sayings to all the children of Israel. And the people sorrowed greatly.
40 And they rose up early in the morning and went up into the top of the mountain, saying, “Lo, we are ready to go up to the place which the LORD has promised. For we have sinned.”
41 But Moses said, “Why do you transgress the Commandment of the LORD? It will not go well.
42 “Do not go up, (for the LORD is not among you) lest you be overthrown before your enemies.
43 “For the Amalekites and the Canaanites are there before you. And you shall fall by the sword. For inasmuch as you are turned away from the LORD, the LORD will also not be with you.”
44 Yet they obstinately presumed to go up to the top of the mountain. But the Ark of the Covenant of the LORD, and Moses, did not depart out of the camp.
45 Then the Amalekites and the Canaanites who dwelt in that mountain came down and struck them and beat them back to Hormah.

14 That night all the members of the community raised their voices and wept aloud.(A) 2 All the Israelites grumbled(B) against Moses and Aaron, and the whole assembly said to them, “If only we had died in Egypt!(C) Or in this wilderness!(D) 3 Why is the Lord bringing us to this land only to let us fall by the sword?(E) Our wives and children(F) will be taken as plunder.(G) Wouldn’t it be better for us to go back to Egypt?(H)” 4 And they said to each other, “We should choose a leader and go back to Egypt.(I)”
5 Then Moses and Aaron fell facedown(J) in front of the whole Israelite assembly(K) gathered there. 6 Joshua son of Nun(L) and Caleb son of Jephunneh, who were among those who had explored the land, tore their clothes(M) 7 and said to the entire Israelite assembly, “The land we passed through and explored is exceedingly good.(N) 8 If the Lord is pleased with us,(O) he will lead us into that land, a land flowing with milk and honey,(P) and will give it to us.(Q) 9 Only do not rebel(R) against the Lord. And do not be afraid(S) of the people of the land,(T) because we will devour them. Their protection is gone, but the Lord is with(U) us.(V) Do not be afraid of them.”(W)
10 But the whole assembly talked about stoning(X) them. Then the glory of the Lord(Y) appeared at the tent of meeting to all the Israelites. 11 The Lord said to Moses, “How long will these people treat me with contempt?(Z) How long will they refuse to believe in me,(AA) in spite of all the signs(AB) I have performed among them? 12 I will strike them down with a plague(AC) and destroy them, but I will make you into a nation(AD) greater and stronger than they.”(AE)
13 Moses said to the Lord, “Then the Egyptians will hear about it! By your power you brought these people up from among them.(AF) 14 And they will tell the inhabitants of this land about it. They have already heard(AG) that you, Lord, are with these people(AH) and that you, Lord, have been seen face to face,(AI) that your cloud stays over them,(AJ) and that you go before them in a pillar of cloud by day and a pillar of fire by night.(AK) 15 If you put all these people to death, leaving none alive, the nations who have heard this report about you will say, 16 ‘The Lord was not able to bring these people into the land he promised them on oath,(AL) so he slaughtered them in the wilderness.’(AM)
17 “Now may the Lord’s strength be displayed, just as you have declared: 18 ‘The Lord is slow to anger, abounding in love and forgiving sin and rebellion.(AN) Yet he does not leave the guilty unpunished; he punishes the children for the sin of the parents to the third and fourth generation.’(AO) 19 In accordance with your great love, forgive(AP) the sin of these people,(AQ) just as you have pardoned them from the time they left Egypt until now.”(AR)
20 The Lord replied, “I have forgiven them,(AS) as you asked. 21 Nevertheless, as surely as I live(AT) and as surely as the glory of the Lord(AU) fills the whole earth,(AV) 22 not one of those who saw my glory and the signs(AW) I performed in Egypt and in the wilderness but who disobeyed me and tested me ten times(AX)— 23 not one of them will ever see the land I promised on oath(AY) to their ancestors. No one who has treated me with contempt(AZ) will ever see it.(BA) 24 But because my servant Caleb(BB) has a different spirit and follows me wholeheartedly,(BC) I will bring him into the land he went to, and his descendants will inherit it.(BD) 25 Since the Amalekites(BE) and the Canaanites(BF) are living in the valleys, turn(BG) back tomorrow and set out toward the desert along the route to the Red Sea.[a](BH)”
26 The Lord said to Moses and Aaron: 27 “How long will this wicked community grumble against me? I have heard the complaints of these grumbling Israelites.(BI) 28 So tell them, ‘As surely as I live,(BJ) declares the Lord, I will do to you(BK) the very thing I heard you say: 29 In this wilderness your bodies will fall(BL)—every one of you twenty years old or more(BM) who was counted in the census(BN) and who has grumbled against me. 30 Not one of you will enter the land(BO) I swore with uplifted hand(BP) to make your home, except Caleb son of Jephunneh(BQ) and Joshua son of Nun.(BR) 31 As for your children that you said would be taken as plunder, I will bring them in to enjoy the land you have rejected.(BS) 32 But as for you, your bodies will fall(BT) in this wilderness. 33 Your children will be shepherds here for forty years,(BU) suffering for your unfaithfulness, until the last of your bodies lies in the wilderness. 34 For forty years(BV)—one year for each of the forty days you explored the land(BW)—you will suffer for your sins and know what it is like to have me against you.’ 35 I, the Lord, have spoken, and I will surely do these things(BX) to this whole wicked community, which has banded together against me. They will meet their end in this wilderness; here they will die.(BY)”
36 So the men Moses had sent(BZ) to explore the land, who returned and made the whole community grumble(CA) against him by spreading a bad report(CB) about it— 37 these men who were responsible for spreading the bad report(CC) about the land were struck down and died of a plague(CD) before the Lord. 38 Of the men who went to explore the land,(CE) only Joshua son of Nun and Caleb son of Jephunneh survived.(CF)
39 When Moses reported this(CG) to all the Israelites, they mourned(CH) bitterly. 40 Early the next morning they set out for the highest point in the hill country,(CI) saying, “Now we are ready to go up to the land the Lord promised. Surely we have sinned!(CJ)”
41 But Moses said, “Why are you disobeying the Lord’s command? This will not succeed!(CK) 42 Do not go up, because the Lord is not with you. You will be defeated by your enemies,(CL) 43 for the Amalekites(CM) and the Canaanites(CN) will face you there. Because you have turned away from the Lord, he will not be with you(CO) and you will fall by the sword.”
44 Nevertheless, in their presumption they went up(CP) toward the highest point in the hill country, though neither Moses nor the ark of the Lord’s covenant moved from the camp.(CQ) 45 Then the Amalekites and the Canaanites(CR) who lived in that hill country(CS) came down and attacked them and beat them down all the way to Hormah.(CT)
