2 (A)Ангел от Господа дойде от Галгал в Бохим[a] и каза: „Аз ви изведох от Египет и ви въведох в тази земя, за която се бях клел на праотците ви с думите: ‘Няма да наруша Своя завет с вас довека. 2 (B)Но вие не сключвайте съюз с жителите на тази земя[b], а разрушете жертвениците им.’ Но вие не послушахте гласа Ми. Защо сторихте това? 3 Затова и Аз казах: ‘Няма да ги прогоня пред очите ви и те ще ви бъдат за падение, като постоянна съблазън за почитане на боговете им’.“ 4 Когато Господният ангел каза тези думи пред всички израилтяни, народът заплака с висок глас. 5 Поради това и нарекоха това място Бохим[c]. Там те принесоха жертва на Господа.

Но последва друго поколение, което не познаваше Господа и делата Му, които бе извършил за Израил.
Призоваване и мисия на съдиите
11 Тогава израилтяните започнаха да извършват лоши дела пред очите на Господа, като се покланяха на ваали. 12 Така те изоставиха Господа, Бога на предците си, Който ги бе извел от египетската земя, и последваха други богове – боговете на племената около тях. Започнаха да им се покланят и разгневиха Господа; 13 изоставиха Господа и започнаха да служат на божеството Ваал и на богинята Астарта. 14 Тогава гневът на Господа пламна против израилтяните и Той ги предаде под властта на грабители, които ги подложиха на грабеж, и ги предаде под робството на племената около тях, така че те вече не можеха да устояват пред враговете си. 15 (E)Всеки път когато потегляха за битка, Господ беше против тях за зло, както им беше говорил Господ и както им се беше клел Господ. И те бяха много притеснени.
16 Но Господ въздигаше съдии, които ги спасяваха от насилието на техните грабители, 17 при все това те не се вслушваха и в съдиите, а се увличаха след други богове и на тях се покланяха. Скоро се отбиха от пътя, по който предците им вървяха, покорявайки се на Господните заповеди. Те не постъпваха така. 18 Когато Господ им въздигаше съдии, Сам Господ беше със съдията и ги спасяваше от враговете им през всички дни на съдията, защото Господ се смиляваше над тях поради стенанията им от онези, които ги угнетяваха и потискаха. 19 След смъртта на съдията те отново започваха да извършват още по-лоши дела от бащите си, като следваха други богове, за да им служат и да им се покланят. Не изоставяха лошите си дела и упорстваха в лошия си път. 20 Тогава гневът на Господа пламна против Израил и Той каза: „Понеже този народ престъпва Моя завет, който сключих с предците им, и не се вслуша в Моя глас, 21 (F)затова и Аз вече няма да прогонвам пред очите им нито един от народите, които остави Иисус при смъртта си, 22 за да подложа Израил на изпитание чрез тях – дали ще започнат да се придържат в пътя Господен и да ходят по него, както постъпваха предците им, или не.“ 23 И така Господ остави тези народи, без да ги прогони веднага, и не ги предаде във властта на Иисус.

2 Og Herrens engel kom fra Gilgal op til Bokim. Og han sa: Jeg hentet eder op fra Egypten og førte eder til det land jeg tilsvor eders fedre, og sa: Aldri i evighet vil jeg bryte min pakt med eder;
2 men I skal ikke gjøre pakt med dette lands innbyggere; deres altere skal I rive ned. Men I hørte ikke på mine ord; hvad har I gjort!
3 Jeg sa også: Jeg vil ikke drive dem ut for eder, men de skal bli til brodder i eders sider, og deres guder skal bli til en snare for eder.
4 Og da Herrens engel talte disse ord til alle Israels barn, gråt folket høit.
5 Derfor kalte de dette sted Bokim[a], og de ofret der til Herren.
6 Da Josva hadde latt folket fare, og Israels barn hadde draget hver til sin arv for å ta landet i eie,
7 tjente folket Herren så lenge Josva levde, og så lenge alle de eldste levde som overlevde Josva og hadde sett alle de store gjerninger Herren hadde gjort for Israel.
8 Men da Josva, Nuns sønn, Herrens tjener, var død, hundre og ti år gammel,
9 og de hadde begravet ham på hans arvelodds grunn i Timnat-Heres i Efra'im-fjellene, nordenfor Ga'as-fjellet,
10 og da hele denne slekt var samlet til sine fedre, og det efter dem var vokset op en annen slekt, som ikke kjente Herren, og heller ikke de gjerninger han hadde gjort for Israel,
11 da gjorde Israels barn det som var ondt i Herrens øine, og dyrket Ba'alene[b].
12 De forlot Herren, sine fedres Gud, som hadde ført dem ut av Egyptens land, og de fulgte andre guder av de folks guder som bodde rundt omkring dem, og de tilbad dem og vakte Herrens harme.
13 De forlot Herren og dyrket Ba'al og Astarte-billedene.
14 Da optendtes Herrens vrede mot Israel, og han gav dem i røveres hånd, som plyndret dem; han solgte dem i deres fienders hånd, de som bodde rundt omkring dem, og de kunde ikke mere stå sig mot sine fiender.
15 Overalt hvor de drog ut, var Herrens hånd imot dem, så det gikk dem ille, således som Herren hadde sagt dem, og som Herren hadde svoret, og deres trengsel var stor.
16 Da opreiste Herren dommere, og de frelste dem av røvernes hånd.
17 Men heller ikke mot sine dommere var de lydige; de holdt sig med andre guder og tilbad dem; de vek snart av fra den vei deres fedre hadde vandret i lydighet mot Herrens bud, og gjorde ikke som de.
18 Og når Herren opreiste dem dommere, så var Herren med dommeren og frelste dem av deres fienders hånd så lenge dommeren levde; for Herren ynkedes over dem når de sukket for deres skyld som plaget og undertrykte dem.
19 Men når så dommeren døde, falt de igjen tilbake og fór verre frem enn sine fedre: De fulgte andre guder og dyrket dem og tilbad dem; de avstod ikke fra nogen av sine gjerninger eller fra sin gjenstridige ferd.
20 Så optendtes Herrens vrede mot Israel, og han sa: Fordi dette folk har brutt min pakt, som jeg oprettet med deres fedre, og ikke har hørt på min røst,
21 så vil jeg heller ikke mere drive bort for dem noget av de folk som Josva lot tilbake da han døde.
22 Ved dem skulde Israel prøves, om de vilde ta vare på Herrens vei og vandre på den, som deres fedre gjorde, eller ikke.
23 Så lot da Herren disse folk bli og hastet ikke med å drive dem bort; han gav dem ikke i Josvas hånd.

The Angel of the Lord at Bokim
2 The angel of the Lord(A) went up from Gilgal(B) to Bokim(C) and said, “I brought you up out of Egypt(D) and led you into the land I swore to give to your ancestors.(E) I said, ‘I will never break my covenant with you,(F) 2 and you shall not make a covenant with the people of this land,(G) but you shall break down their altars.(H)’ Yet you have disobeyed(I) me. Why have you done this? 3 And I have also said, ‘I will not drive them out before you;(J) they will become traps(K) for you, and their gods will become snares(L) to you.’”
4 When the angel of the Lord had spoken these things to all the Israelites, the people wept aloud,(M) 5 and they called that place Bokim.[a](N) There they offered sacrifices to the Lord.
Disobedience and Defeat(O)
6 After Joshua had dismissed the Israelites, they went to take possession of the land, each to their own inheritance. 7 The people served the Lord throughout the lifetime of Joshua and of the elders who outlived him and who had seen all the great things the Lord had done for Israel.(P)
8 Joshua son of Nun,(Q) the servant of the Lord, died at the age of a hundred and ten. 9 And they buried him in the land of his inheritance, at Timnath Heres[b](R) in the hill country of Ephraim, north of Mount Gaash.
10 After that whole generation had been gathered to their ancestors, another generation grew up who knew neither the Lord nor what he had done for Israel.(S) 11 Then the Israelites did evil(T) in the eyes of the Lord(U) and served the Baals.(V) 12 They forsook the Lord, the God of their ancestors, who had brought them out of Egypt. They followed and worshiped various gods(W) of the peoples around them.(X) They aroused(Y) the Lord’s anger(Z) 13 because they forsook(AA) him and served Baal and the Ashtoreths.(AB) 14 In his anger(AC) against Israel the Lord gave them into the hands(AD) of raiders who plundered(AE) them. He sold them(AF) into the hands of their enemies all around, whom they were no longer able to resist.(AG) 15 Whenever Israel went out to fight, the hand of the Lord was against them(AH) to defeat them, just as he had sworn to them. They were in great distress.(AI)
16 Then the Lord raised up judges,[c](AJ) who saved(AK) them out of the hands of these raiders. 17 Yet they would not listen to their judges but prostituted(AL) themselves to other gods(AM) and worshiped them.(AN) They quickly turned(AO) from the ways of their ancestors, who had been obedient to the Lord’s commands.(AP) 18 Whenever the Lord raised up a judge for them, he was with the judge and saved(AQ) them out of the hands of their enemies as long as the judge lived; for the Lord relented(AR) because of their groaning(AS) under those who oppressed and afflicted(AT) them. 19 But when the judge died, the people returned to ways even more corrupt(AU) than those of their ancestors,(AV) following other gods and serving and worshiping them.(AW) They refused to give up their evil practices and stubborn(AX) ways.
20 Therefore the Lord was very angry(AY) with Israel and said, “Because this nation has violated the covenant(AZ) I ordained for their ancestors and has not listened to me, 21 I will no longer drive out(BA) before them any of the nations Joshua left when he died. 22 I will use them to test(BB) Israel and see whether they will keep the way of the Lord and walk in it as their ancestors did.” 23 The Lord had allowed those nations to remain; he did not drive them out at once by giving them into the hands of Joshua.(BC)
