Самсон и Далила
16 Однажды Самсон пошёл в Газу и, увидев там блудницу, зашёл к ней. 2 Жителям Газы сказали:
– Самсон здесь! – и они, окружив то место, устроили на него засаду у городских ворот.
Они не трогались с места всю ночь, говоря:
– На рассвете мы его убьём.
3 Но Самсон лежал только до полуночи. В полночь он встал, схватил двери городских ворот вместе с обоими косяками и вырвал их вместе с засовом. Он поднял их на плечи и отнёс на вершину горы, что напротив Хеврона.
4 Прошло время, и он полюбил женщину из долины Сорек, которую звали Далила. 5 Правители филистимлян пришли к ней и сказали:
– Разговори его и выведай, в чём тайна его великой силы и как нам его одолеть, чтобы связать и усмирить. Каждый из нас даст тебе по тринадцать килограммов[a] серебра.
6 Далила сказала Самсону:

– Самсон, на тебя идут филистимляне!
Но он разорвал тетивы, как рвётся нитка из пакли, когда касается огня. И тайна его силы осталась нераскрытой.
10 Тогда Далила сказала Самсону:
– Ты смеялся надо мной и лгал мне. Прошу тебя, скажи мне, чем тебя можно связать?
11 Он сказал:
– Если меня крепко связать новыми верёвками, которыми никто ещё не пользовался, я ослабею и стану таким же, как любой другой человек.
12 Далила взяла новые верёвки, связала его и сказала ему:
– Самсон, на тебя идут филистимляне!
(А люди в засаде прятались у неё во внутренней комнате.) Но он разорвал верёвки на руках, как нитки.
13 Тогда Далила сказала Самсону:
– Ты всё смеёшься надо мной и лжёшь мне. Ну скажи же мне, чем тебя можно связать?
Он ответил:
– Если ты вплетёшь семь моих кос в ткань на ткацком станке и закрепишь её гвоздём, я ослабею и стану таким же, как любой другой человек.
Когда он спал, Далила взяла семь его кос, вплела их в ткань 14 и закрепила её гвоздём.
После этого она позвала его:
– Самсон, на тебя идут филистимляне!
Он проснулся, выдернул гвоздь и вывернул с места ткацкий станок с тканью.
15 Тогда она сказала ему:
– Как ты можешь говорить: «Я люблю тебя», если ты мне не доверяешь? Вот уже третий раз ты издеваешься надо мной и не говоришь, откуда у тебя такая великая сила.
16 Так она изводила его день за днём, пока не надоела ему до смерти. 17 И он рассказал ей всё.
– Моей головы никогда не касалась бритва, – сказал он ей, – потому что я – назорей, посвящённый Аллаху, с самого рождения. Если бы мне остригли голову, моя сила покинула бы меня и я, ослабев, стал бы таким же, как любой другой человек.
18 Поняв, что он рассказал ей всё, Далила послала сказать правителям филистимлян:
– Приходите ещё раз: он рассказал мне всё.
Правители филистимлян вернулись с серебром в руках. 19 Усыпив его у себя на коленях, она позвала человека и велела ему остричь[b] семь кос Самсона, ослабляя его этим, и сила покинула его.
20 Она крикнула:
– Самсон, на тебя идут филистимляне!
Он проснулся и подумал:
– Выберусь, как и прежде, освобожусь!
Он не знал, что Вечный покинул его. 21 А филистимляне схватили его, выкололи ему глаза, отвели его в Газу и заковали в бронзовые кандалы. Там они заставили его молоть зерно в темнице. 22 Но волосы у него стали отрастать заново.
Смерть Самсона
23 Филистимские правители собрались, чтобы принести великую жертву своему богу Дагону[c] и повеселиться. Они говорили:
– Наш бог отдал Самсона, нашего врага, в наши руки.
24 Видя его, народ славил своего бога:
– Отдал наш бог в наши руки врага,
опустошителя нашей земли,

29 Самсон схватился за два главных столба, на которых стоял храм. Уперевшись в один из них правой, а в другой – левой рукой, 30 Самсон сказал:
– Пусть я погибну вместе с филистимлянами!
Он надавил изо всех своих сил, и храм рухнул на правителей и на народ, который в нём был. И при своей смерти он убил гораздо больше филистимлян, чем при жизни.
31 Его братья и вся семья его отца пришли забрать его. Они унесли и похоронили его между Цорой и Эштаолом, в гробнице Маноаха, его отца. Самсон был судьёю в Исраиле двадцать лет.

Samson’s Weakness
16 Then Samson went to Gaza and saw a prostitute there, and went in to her. 2 The Gazites were told, “Samson has come here.” So they surrounded the place and waited all night at the gate of the city to ambush him. They kept quiet all night, saying, “In the morning, when it is light, we will kill him.” 3 But Samson lay [resting] until midnight, then at midnight he got up and took hold of the doors of the city gate and the two door-posts, and pulled them up, [security] bar and all, and he put them on his shoulders and carried them up to the top of the hill which is opposite Hebron.
4 After this he fell in love with a [Philistine] woman [living] in the Valley of Sorek, whose name was Delilah. 5 So the [five] lords (governors) of the Philistines came to her and said to her, “Persuade him, and see where his great strength lies and [find out] how we may overpower him so that we may bind him to subdue him. And each of us will give you eleven hundred pieces of silver.” 6 So Delilah said to Samson, “Please tell me where your great strength lies and with what you may be bound and subdued.” 7 Samson said to her, “If they bind me with seven fresh cords ([a]tendons) that have not been dried, then I will be weak and be like any [other] man.” 8 Then the Philistine lords brought her seven fresh cords that had not been dried, and she bound him with them. 9 Now she had men lying in ambush in an inner room. And she said to him, “The Philistines are upon you, Samson!” And he broke the cords as a [b]string of tow breaks when it touches fire. So [the secret of] his strength was not discovered.
10 Then Delilah said to Samson, “See now, you have mocked me and told me lies; now please tell me [truthfully] how you may be bound.” 11 He said to her, “If they bind me tightly with new ropes that have not been used, then I will become weak and be like any [other] man.” 12 So Delilah took new ropes and bound him with them and said to him, “The Philistines are upon you, Samson!” And the men lying in ambush were in the inner room. But he snapped the ropes off his arms like [sewing] thread.
13 Then Delilah said to Samson, “Until now you have mocked me and told me lies; tell me [truthfully] with what you may be bound.” And he said to her, “If you weave the seven braids of my hair with the web [c][and fasten it with a pin, then I will become weak and be like any other man.” 14 So while he slept, Delilah took the seven locks (braids) of his hair and wove them into the web]. And she fastened it with the pin [of the loom] and said to him, “The Philistines are upon you, Samson!” And he awoke from his sleep and pulled out the pin of the [weaver’s] loom and the web.
Delilah Extracts His Secret
15 Then she said to him, “How can you say, ‘I love you,’ when your heart is not with me? You have mocked me these three times and have not told me where your great strength lies.” 16 When she pressured him day after day with her words and pleaded with him, he was annoyed to death. 17 Then [finally] he told her everything that was in his heart and said to her, “A razor has never been used on my head, for I have been a Nazirite to God from my mother’s womb. If I am shaved, then my strength will leave me, and I will become weak and be like any [other] man.”
18 Then Delilah realized that he had told her everything in his heart, so she sent and called for the Philistine lords, saying, “Come up this once, because he has told me everything in his heart.” Then the Philistine lords came up to her and brought the money [they had promised] in their hands. 19 She made Samson sleep on her knees, and she called a man and had him shave off the seven braids of his head. Then she began to abuse Samson, and his strength left him. 20 She said, “The Philistines are upon you, Samson!” And he awoke from his sleep and said, “I will go out as I have time after time and shake myself free.” For Samson did not know that the Lord had departed from him. 21 Then the Philistines seized him and gouged out his eyes; and they brought him down to Gaza and bound him with [two] bronze chains; and he was forced to be a grinder [of grain into flour at the mill] in the prison. 22 But the hair of his head began to grow again after it had been shaved off.
23 Now the Philistine lords gathered together to offer a great sacrifice to Dagon their god, and to celebrate, for they said,
“Our god has given Samson our enemy into our hands!”
24 When the people saw Samson, they praised their god, for they said,
“Our god has handed over our enemy to us,
The ravager of our country,
Who has killed many of us.”
25 Now when they were in high spirits, they said, “Call for Samson, so that he may amuse us.” So they called Samson out of the prison, and he entertained them. They made him stand between the pillars. 26 Then Samson said to the boy who held him by the hand, “Let me feel the pillars on which the [roof of the] house rests, so that I may lean against them.” 27 Now the house was full of men and women; all the Philistine lords were there, and on the flat roof were about three thousand men and women who looked on while Samson was entertaining them.
Samson Is Avenged
28 Then Samson called to the Lord and said, “O Lord God, please remember me and please strengthen me just this one time, O God, and let me take vengeance on the Philistines for my two eyes.” 29 Samson took hold of the two middle [support] pillars on which the house rested, and braced himself against them, one with his right hand and the other with his left. 30 And Samson said, “Let me die with the Philistines!” And he stretched out with all his might [collapsing the support pillars], and the house fell on the lords and on all the people who were in it. So the dead whom he killed at his death were more than those whom he had killed during his life. 31 Then his brothers and his father’s entire [tribal] household came down, took him, and brought him up; and they buried him in the tomb of Manoah his father, [which was] between Zorah and Eshtaol. So Samson had judged Israel for twenty years.(A)

16 Then went Samson to Gaza, and saw there an harlot, and went in unto her.
2 And it was told the Gazites, saying, Samson is come hither. And they compassed him in, and laid wait for him all night in the gate of the city, and were quiet all the night, saying, In the morning, when it is day, we shall kill him.
3 And Samson lay till midnight, and arose at midnight, and took the doors of the gate of the city, and the two posts, and went away with them, bar and all, and put them upon his shoulders, and carried them up to the top of an hill that is before Hebron.
4 And it came to pass afterward, that he loved a woman in the valley of Sorek, whose name was Delilah.
5 And the lords of the Philistines came up unto her, and said unto her, Entice him, and see wherein his great strength lieth, and by what means we may prevail against him, that we may bind him to afflict him; and we will give thee every one of us eleven hundred pieces of silver.
6 And Delilah said to Samson, Tell me, I pray thee, wherein thy great strength lieth, and wherewith thou mightest be bound to afflict thee.
7 And Samson said unto her, If they bind me with seven green withs that were never dried, then shall I be weak, and be as another man.
8 Then the lords of the Philistines brought up to her seven green withs which had not been dried, and she bound him with them.
9 Now there were men lying in wait, abiding with her in the chamber. And she said unto him, The Philistines be upon thee, Samson. And he brake the withs, as a thread of tow is broken when it toucheth the fire. So his strength was not known.
10 And Delilah said unto Samson, Behold, thou hast mocked me, and told me lies: now tell me, I pray thee, wherewith thou mightest be bound.
11 And he said unto her, If they bind me fast with new ropes that never were occupied, then shall I be weak, and be as another man.
12 Delilah therefore took new ropes, and bound him therewith, and said unto him, The Philistines be upon thee, Samson. And there were liers in wait abiding in the chamber. And he brake them from off his arms like a thread.
13 And Delilah said unto Samson, Hitherto thou hast mocked me, and told me lies: tell me wherewith thou mightest be bound. And he said unto her, If thou weavest the seven locks of my head with the web.
14 And she fastened it with the pin, and said unto him, The Philistines be upon thee, Samson. And he awaked out of his sleep, and went away with the pin of the beam, and with the web.
15 And she said unto him, How canst thou say, I love thee, when thine heart is not with me? thou hast mocked me these three times, and hast not told me wherein thy great strength lieth.
16 And it came to pass, when she pressed him daily with her words, and urged him, so that his soul was vexed unto death;
17 That he told her all his heart, and said unto her, There hath not come a razor upon mine head; for I have been a Nazarite unto God from my mother's womb: if I be shaven, then my strength will go from me, and I shall become weak, and be like any other man.
18 And when Delilah saw that he had told her all his heart, she sent and called for the lords of the Philistines, saying, Come up this once, for he hath shewed me all his heart. Then the lords of the Philistines came up unto her, and brought money in their hand.
19 And she made him sleep upon her knees; and she called for a man, and she caused him to shave off the seven locks of his head; and she began to afflict him, and his strength went from him.
20 And she said, The Philistines be upon thee, Samson. And he awoke out of his sleep, and said, I will go out as at other times before, and shake myself. And he wist not that the Lord was departed from him.
21 But the Philistines took him, and put out his eyes, and brought him down to Gaza, and bound him with fetters of brass; and he did grind in the prison house.
22 Howbeit the hair of his head began to grow again after he was shaven.
23 Then the lords of the Philistines gathered them together for to offer a great sacrifice unto Dagon their god, and to rejoice: for they said, Our god hath delivered Samson our enemy into our hand.
24 And when the people saw him, they praised their god: for they said, Our god hath delivered into our hands our enemy, and the destroyer of our country, which slew many of us.
25 And it came to pass, when their hearts were merry, that they said, Call for Samson, that he may make us sport. And they called for Samson out of the prison house; and he made them sport: and they set him between the pillars.
26 And Samson said unto the lad that held him by the hand, Suffer me that I may feel the pillars whereupon the house standeth, that I may lean upon them.
27 Now the house was full of men and women; and all the lords of the Philistines were there; and there were upon the roof about three thousand men and women, that beheld while Samson made sport.
28 And Samson called unto the Lord, and said, O Lord God, remember me, I pray thee, and strengthen me, I pray thee, only this once, O God, that I may be at once avenged of the Philistines for my two eyes.
29 And Samson took hold of the two middle pillars upon which the house stood, and on which it was borne up, of the one with his right hand, and of the other with his left.
30 And Samson said, Let me die with the Philistines. And he bowed himself with all his might; and the house fell upon the lords, and upon all the people that were therein. So the dead which he slew at his death were more than they which he slew in his life.
31 Then his brethren and all the house of his father came down, and took him, and brought him up, and buried him between Zorah and Eshtaol in the buryingplace of Manoah his father. And he judged Israel twenty years.
