Иефтах покоряет аммонитян
11 Галаадитянин Иефтах был могучим воином. Его отцом был Галаад, а матерью – блудница. 2 Жена Галаада тоже родила ему сыновей, и когда они выросли, они выгнали Иефтаха.
– Ты ничего не унаследуешь в нашей семье, – сказали они ему, – потому что тебя родила не наша мать.
3 Иефтах убежал от своих братьев и поселился в земле Тов, где вокруг него собрались изгои, которые вместе с ним совершали набеги.
4 Некоторое время спустя, когда аммонитяне пошли войной на Исраил, 5 старейшины Галаада пошли, чтобы привести Иефтаха из земли Тов.
6 – Приходи, – сказали они, – и будь нашим военачальником, чтобы нам воевать с аммонитянами.

9 Иефтах ответил:
– Допустим, вы вернёте меня, чтобы воевать с аммонитянами, и Вечный отдаст их мне – стану ли я и вправду вашим главой?
10 Старейшины Галаада ответили:
– Вечный – свидетель между нами! Мы непременно сделаем, как ты говоришь.
11 Иефтах пошёл со старейшинами Галаада, и народ поставил его над собой вождём и военачальником. Иефтах повторил все свои слова перед Вечным в Мицпе.
12 Затем он отправил послов с вопросом к царю аммонитян:
– Что ты имеешь против меня, что напал на мою страну?
13 Царь аммонитян ответил послам Иефтаха:
– Когда Исраил шёл из Египта, он захватил мою землю от реки Арнона до реки Иаббока и Иордана. Итак, верни её добровольно.
14 Иефтах ещё раз отправил послов к царю аммонитян 15 сказать ему:
– Вот что говорит Иефтах: Исраил не захватывал ни земель Моава, ни земель аммонитян. 16 Ведь когда они шли из Египта, Исраил прошёл через пустыню до Тростникового моря[a] и пришёл к городу Кадешу. 17 Исраил отправил послов к царю Эдома, говоря: «Позволь мне пройти через твою страну». Но царь Эдома не стал слушать. Исраил посылал и к царю Моава, но и тот отказал. И Исраил оставался в Кадеше. 18 Затем он странствовал по пустыне, обошёл земли Эдома и Моава, пришёл к восточной стороне земель Моава и поставил лагерь на другой стороне реки Арнона. Он не вошёл в землю Моава – ведь Арнон и был границей моавитян. 19 Исраил отправил послов к Сигону, царю аморреев, который правил в Хешбоне, и сказал ему: «Позволь нам пройти через твою страну к себе». 20 Но Сигон не доверял Исраилу и не дал пройти через свою землю. Он собрал всех своих воинов, разбил стан в Иахаце и напал на Исраил. 21 Тогда Вечный, Бог Исраила, отдал Сигона и всех его воинов в руки исраильтян, и они разбили их. Исраил завладел землёй аморреев, которые жили в той стране, 22 захватив её целиком, от Арнона до Иаббока и от пустыни до Иордана.[b]
23 Итак, раз Вечный, Бог Исраила, прогнал аморреев от Своего народа, Исраила, то какое у тебя право владеть ею? 24 Разве тебе не довольно владеть тем, что дал тебе твой бог Хемош[c]? А мы будем владеть всем, что дал нам Вечный, наш Бог. 25 Чем ты лучше Валака, сына Циппора, царя Моава? Разве он когда-нибудь ссорился с Исраилом или воевал с ним? 26 Исраил жил в Хешбоне, Ароере, прилегающих к ним поселениях и во всех городах по Арнону триста лет. Что же ты не захватил их за это время? 27 Я не провинился перед тобой, а ты причиняешь мне зло, идя на меня войной. Вечный – судья. Пусть Он решит сегодня тяжбу между исраильтянами и аммонитянами.
28 Но царь аммонитян не послушал слов Иефтаха. 29 Тогда Дух Вечного сошёл на Иефтаха. Иефтах прошёл через Галаад и Манассу, прошёл через Мицпу, что в Галааде, и оттуда двинулся на аммонитян. 30 Иефтах поклялся перед Вечным:
– Если Ты отдашь аммонитян в мои руки, 31 то любое существо, которое выйдет из дверей моего дома мне навстречу, когда я вернусь с победой, будет принадлежать Вечному, и я принесу его в жертву всесожжения.
32 Иефтах переправился, чтобы сразиться с аммонитянами, и Вечный отдал их в его руки. 33 Он опустошил двадцать городов от Ароера до предместий Миннита и до самого Авель-Керамима. Так Исраил покорил аммонитян.
34 А когда Иефтах вернулся к себе домой в Мицпу, то кому же и было выйти ему навстречу, как не его дочери, танцующей под звуки бубнов! Она была его единственным ребёнком. Кроме неё, у него не было больше ни сына, ни дочери. 35 Увидев её, он разорвал на себе одежду и закричал:
– О! Моя дочь! Ты сразила меня! Ты стала причиной моего несчастья, ведь я дал Вечному клятву, которую не могу нарушить.
36 – Мой отец, – ответила она, – ты дал Вечному слово. Сделай со мной то, что ты обещал, ведь Вечный дал тебе отомстить твоим врагам, аммонитянам. 37 Но исполни одну мою просьбу, – сказала она. – Дай мне два месяца срока, чтобы мне пойти и погулять в горах, поплакать с моими подругами о том, что мне уже никогда не суждено выйти замуж.
38 – Иди, – сказал он и отпустил её на два месяца.
Она вместе с девушками пошла в горы и плакала о том, что ей уже никогда не суждено выйти замуж. 39 Когда же два месяца прошли, она вернулась к своему отцу, и он сделал с ней то, о чём поклялся. Она умерла девственницей.
Отсюда и происходит исраильский обычай, 40 что каждый год молодые женщины Исраила выходят на четыре дня оплакивать дочь галаадитянина Иефтаха.

Jefté se torna juiz de Israel
11 Jefté era um guerreiro corajoso. Era filho de Gileade, mas sua mãe era uma prostituta. 2 A esposa de Gileade teve muitos filhos, e quando esses meios-irmãos cresceram, expulsaram Jefté, dizendo: “Você não receberá parte alguma da herança de nosso pai, pois é filho de outra mulher”. 3 Então Jefté fugiu de seus irmãos e foi viver na terra de Tobe. Em pouco tempo, passou a chefiar um bando de desocupados que se uniram a ele.
4 Por essa época, os amonitas começaram a guerrear contra Israel. 5 Quando os amonitas atacaram, os líderes de Gileade mandaram buscar Jefté na terra de Tobe. 6 “Venha e seja nosso comandante!”, disseram. “Ajude-nos a lutar contra os amonitas!”
7 Mas Jefté lhes disse: “Não são vocês os mesmos que me odiavam e que me expulsaram da casa de meu pai? Por que me chamam agora que estão em apuros?”.
8 “Porque precisamos de você”, responderam os líderes. “Se você nos comandar na batalha contra os amonitas, nós o proclamaremos governante de todo o povo de Gileade.”
9 Jefté lhes disse: “Quer dizer que se eu for com vocês e o Senhor me der a vitória sobre os amonitas, governarei todo o povo?”.
10 Os líderes de Gileade responderam: “O Senhor é nossa testemunha de que faremos exatamente como você disse”.
11 Então Jefté foi com os líderes de Gileade, e o povo o fez governante e comandante do exército. Em Mispá, na presença do Senhor, Jefté repetiu o que tinha dito aos líderes.
12 Jefté enviou mensageiros ao rei de Amom para perguntar: “Por que você saiu para guerrear contra minha terra?”.
13 O rei de Amom respondeu aos mensageiros de Jefté: “Quando saíram do Egito, os israelitas roubaram minhas terras desde o rio Arnom até o rio Jaboque, e até o Jordão. Agora, devolva-nos pacificamente esse território”.
14 Jefté enviou a seguinte mensagem em resposta ao rei amonita:
15 “Assim diz Jefté: Israel não roubou terra alguma de Moabe nem de Amom. 16 Quando o povo de Israel veio do Egito e chegou a Cades, depois de atravessar o mar Vermelho,[a] 17 enviou mensageiros ao rei de Edom e pediu: ‘Deixe-nos passar por sua terra’. Contudo, seu pedido foi negado. Então fizeram o mesmo pedido ao rei de Moabe, mas ele também não os deixou passar. Por isso, o povo de Israel ficou em Cades.
18 “Depois, passaram pelo deserto, contornando Edom e Moabe. Acompanharam a divisa de Moabe a leste e acamparam do outro lado do rio Arnom. Em momento algum atravessaram o Arnom para entrar em Moabe, pois o Arnom era a divisa de Moabe.
19 “Então Israel enviou mensageiros a Seom, rei dos amorreus, que governava em Hesbom, e pediu: ‘Deixe-nos passar por sua terra, para chegarmos ao nosso destino’. 20 O rei Seom, porém, não confiava em Israel o suficiente para deixar o povo passar por seu território. Em vez disso, mobilizou seu exército em Jaza e atacou Israel. 21 Mas o Senhor, o Deus de Israel, entregou o rei Seom nas mãos de seu povo, que derrotou os amorreus. Israel tomou posse de toda a terra dos amorreus que viviam naquela região, 22 desde o Arnom até o Jaboque, e desde o deserto até o Jordão.
23 “Como você vê, foi o Senhor, o Deus de Israel, que tirou a terra dos amorreus e a entregou a Israel. Por que, então, haveríamos de devolvê-la? 24 Fique com o que seu deus Camos lhe der, e nós ficaremos com o que o Senhor, nosso Deus, nos der. 25 Acaso você é melhor que Balaque, filho de Zipor, rei de Moabe? Ele tentou disputar esses territórios com Israel? Entrou em guerra contra os israelitas?
26 “Israel vive aqui há trezentos anos. Habita em Hesbom e nos povoados ao redor, até Aroer e seus povoados, e todas as cidades às margens do rio Arnom. Por que, até agora, vocês não fizeram esforço algum para reaver esse território? 27 Portanto, não pequei contra você. Pelo contrário, você fez mal ao me atacar. Que o Senhor, o Juiz, decida hoje qual de nós está certo: Israel ou Amom”.
28 Mas o rei de Amom não deu atenção à mensagem de Jefté.
O voto de Jefté
29 Então o Espírito do Senhor veio sobre Jefté. Ele atravessou o território de Gileade e Manassés, incluindo Mispá em Gileade, e dali avançou contra os amonitas. 30 Jefté fez um voto ao Senhor: “Se entregares os amonitas em minhas mãos, 31 darei ao Senhor o que sair primeiro de minha casa quando eu regressar vitorioso. Eu o oferecerei como holocausto”.
32 Jefté saiu com seu exército para combater os amonitas, e o Senhor os entregou em suas mãos. 33 Ele aniquilou os amonitas e destruiu vinte cidades, desde Aroer até os arredores de Minite, chegando até Abel-Queramim. Assim, os israelitas derrotaram os amonitas.
34 Quando Jefté voltou para casa em Mispá, sua filha saiu ao seu encontro, tocando tamborim e dançando. Era sua única filha; ele não tinha nenhum outro filho nem filha. 35 Quando Jefté a viu, rasgou as próprias roupas e gritou. “Ah, minha filha! Você acabou comigo! Trouxe desgraça sobre mim! Fiz um voto ao Senhor e não posso voltar atrás!”.
36 Ela disse: “Pai, se fez um voto ao Senhor, faça comigo o que prometeu, pois o Senhor lhe deu grande vitória sobre seus inimigos, os amonitas. 37 Mas, primeiro, permita que eu ande pelos montes e chore com minhas amigas por dois meses, pois morrerei virgem”.
38 “Pode ir”, disse Jefté, e deixou que ela se ausentasse por dois meses. Ela e suas amigas foram para os montes e lamentaram, pois ela jamais teria filhos. 39 Quando ela voltou para casa, seu pai cumpriu o voto que havia feito, e ela morreu sem ter tido relações com homem algum.
Por isso, tornou-se costume em Israel 40 as moças israelitas saírem por quatro dias todos os anos para lamentar o destino da filha de Jefté, de Gileade.

11 Now (A)Jephthah the Gileadite was (B)a mighty man of valor, but he was the son of a harlot; and Gilead begot Jephthah. 2 Gilead’s wife bore sons; and when his wife’s sons grew up, they drove Jephthah out, and said to him, “You shall have (C)no inheritance in our father’s house, for you are the son of another woman.” 3 Then Jephthah fled from his brothers and dwelt in the land of (D)Tob; and (E)worthless men banded together with Jephthah and went out raiding with him.
4 It came to pass after a time that the (F)people of Ammon made war against Israel. 5 And so it was, when the people of Ammon made war against Israel, that the elders of Gilead went to get Jephthah from the land of Tob. 6 Then they said to Jephthah, “Come and be our commander, that we may fight against the people of Ammon.”
7 So Jephthah said to the elders of Gilead, (G)“Did you not hate me, and expel me from my father’s house? Why have you come to me now when you are in [a]distress?”
8 (H)And the elders of Gilead said to Jephthah, “That is why we have (I)turned[b] again to you now, that you may go with us and fight against the people of Ammon, and be (J)our head over all the inhabitants of Gilead.”
9 So Jephthah said to the elders of Gilead, “If you take me back home to fight against the people of Ammon, and the Lord delivers them to me, shall I be your head?”
10 And the elders of Gilead said to Jephthah, (K)“The Lord will be a witness between us, if we do not do according to your words.” 11 Then Jephthah went with the elders of Gilead, and the people made him (L)head and commander over them; and Jephthah spoke all his words (M)before the Lord in Mizpah.
12 Now Jephthah sent messengers to the king of the people of Ammon, saying, (N)“What do you have against me, that you have come to fight against me in my land?”
13 And the king of the people of Ammon answered the messengers of Jephthah, (O)“Because Israel took away my land when they came up out of Egypt, from (P)the Arnon as far as (Q)the Jabbok, and to the Jordan. Now therefore, restore those lands peaceably.”
14 So Jephthah again sent messengers to the king of the people of Ammon, 15 and said to him, “Thus says Jephthah: (R)‘Israel did not take away the land of Moab, nor the land of the people of Ammon; 16 for when Israel came up from Egypt, they walked through the wilderness as far as the Red Sea and (S)came to Kadesh. 17 Then (T)Israel sent messengers to the king of Edom, saying, “Please let me pass through your land.” (U)But the king of Edom would not heed. And in like manner they sent to the (V)king of Moab, but he would not consent. So Israel (W)remained in Kadesh. 18 And they (X)went along through the wilderness and (Y)bypassed the land of Edom and the land of Moab, came to the east side of the land of Moab, and encamped on the other side of the Arnon. But they did not enter the border of Moab, for the Arnon was the border of Moab. 19 Then (Z)Israel sent messengers to Sihon king of the Amorites, king of Heshbon; and Israel said to him, “Please (AA)let us pass through your land into our place.” 20 (AB)But Sihon did not trust Israel to pass through his territory. So Sihon gathered all his people together, encamped in Jahaz, and fought against Israel. 21 And the Lord God of Israel (AC)delivered Sihon and all his people into the hand of Israel, and they (AD)defeated[c] them. Thus Israel gained possession of all the land of the Amorites, who inhabited that country. 22 They took possession of (AE)all the territory of the Amorites, from the Arnon to the Jabbok and from the wilderness to the Jordan.
23 ‘And now the Lord God of Israel has [d]dispossessed the Amorites from before His people Israel; should you then possess it? 24 Will you not possess whatever (AF)Chemosh your god gives you to possess? So whatever (AG)the Lord our God takes possession of before us, we will possess. 25 And now, are you any better than (AH)Balak the son of Zippor, king of Moab? Did he ever strive against Israel? Did he ever fight against them? 26 While Israel dwelt in (AI)Heshbon and its villages, in (AJ)Aroer and its villages, and in all the cities along the banks of the Arnon, for three hundred years, why did you not recover them within that time? 27 Therefore I have not sinned against you, but you wronged me by fighting against me. May the Lord, (AK)the Judge, (AL)render judgment this day between the children of Israel and the people of Ammon.’ ” 28 However, the king of the people of Ammon did not heed the words which Jephthah sent him.
Jephthah’s Vow and Victory
29 Then (AM)the Spirit of the Lord came upon Jephthah, and he passed through Gilead and Manasseh, and passed through Mizpah of Gilead; and from Mizpah of Gilead he advanced toward the people of Ammon. 30 And Jephthah (AN)made a vow to the Lord, and said, “If You will indeed deliver the people of Ammon into my hands, 31 then it will be that whatever comes out of the doors of my house to meet me, when I return in peace from the people of Ammon, (AO)shall surely be the Lord’s, (AP)and I will offer it up as a burnt offering.”
32 So Jephthah advanced toward the people of Ammon to fight against them, and the Lord delivered them into his hands. 33 And he [e]defeated them from Aroer as far as (AQ)Minnith—twenty cities—and to [f]Abel Keramim, with a very great slaughter. Thus the people of Ammon were subdued before the children of Israel.
Jephthah’s Daughter
34 When Jephthah came to his house at (AR)Mizpah, there was (AS)his daughter, coming out to meet him with timbrels and dancing; and she was his only child. Besides her he had neither son nor daughter. 35 And it came to pass, when he saw her, that he (AT)tore his clothes, and said, “Alas, my daughter! You have brought me very low! You are among those who trouble me! For I (AU)have [g]given my word to the Lord, and (AV)I cannot [h]go back on it.”
36 So she said to him, “My father, if you have given your word to the Lord, (AW)do to me according to what has gone out of your mouth, because (AX)the Lord has avenged you of your enemies, the people of Ammon.” 37 Then she said to her father, “Let this thing be done for me: let me alone for two months, that I may go and wander on the mountains and [i]bewail my virginity, my [j]friends and I.”
38 So he said, “Go.” And he sent her away for two months; and she went with her friends, and bewailed her virginity on the mountains. 39 And it was so at the end of two months that she returned to her father, and he (AY)carried out his vow with her which he had vowed. She [k]knew no man.
And it became a custom in Israel 40 that the daughters of Israel went four days each year to [l]lament the daughter of Jephthah the Gileadite.
