11 Питам тогава: „Нима Бог е отхвърлил своя народ?“ Не, разбира се! Нали аз също съм израелтянин, потомък на Авраам, от племето на Вениамин. 2 Бог не е отхвърлил своя народ, когото предварително е избрал! Или не знаете какво казва Писанието за Илия, който умолявал Бога против народа на Израел: 3 „Господи, те убиха пророците ти и разрушиха олтарите ти. Аз съм единственият, който остана, а искат и мен да убият.“(A) 4 Но какво му отговорил Бог? — „Запазих за себе си седем хиляди мъже, които не са се поклонили пред Ваал.[a]“(B)

5 Така и сега са останали няколко души, които Бог е избрал чрез благодатта си. 6 И щом са избрани чрез Божията благодат, то изборът не зависи от делата им, защото ако беше така, Божията благодат не би била благодат.

7 Ето какво се случи: народът на Израел не успя да намери това, което търсеше. Избраните от Бога го постигнаха, а останалите закоравиха сърцата си. 8 Както е казано в Писанието:

„Бог ги направи безчувствени.(C)
Той им даде очи, които не виждат,
    и уши, които не чуват,

9 А Давид казва:

„И нека собствените им пирувания станат примка и капан за тях.
    И нека паднат и получат наказанието си.
10 Нека очите им се замъглят, за да не виждат
    и нека завинаги се превият под нещастията си.“(E)

11 И питам: „Когато юдеите се препънаха и паднаха, падането им окончателно ли беше?“ Не, разбира се! Но чрез тяхното препъване дойде спасение за езичниците и това накара юдеите да завиждат. 12 И ако тяхното препъване донесе богати благословения на света и тяхната загуба донесе богати благословения на езичниците, то колко повече ще донесе влизането на пълния брой юдеи в Божието царство!

13 Сега се обръщам към вас, които не сте юдеи. Точно защото съм апостол на езичниците, придавам такова значение на служението си 14 с надеждата, че мога да накарам хората от своя народ да ревнуват и да спася някои от тях. 15 Защото, ако като ги отхвърли, Бог се помири със света, какво би могло да донесе приемането им от Бога, освен живот от мъртвите?

16 Ако първият залък се даде в дар на Бога, целият хляб се освещава. Ако коренът на дървото е свят, то и клоните му са святи.

17 И ако някои от клоните са били отчупени, а ти, който си клонка от дива маслина, си бил присаден сред тях и споделяш корена и богатите сокове на дървото, 18 не трябва да се хвалиш пред клоните, които са отчупени. И ако се хвалиш, помни, че не ти храниш корена, а той — теб. 19 Ще кажеш: „Да, но за да бъда присаден, други клони бяха отчупени.“ 20 Вярно е. Те бяха отчупени, защото нямаха вяра, а ти поради вярата си остана. Затова трябва не да се гордееш, а да се страхуваш, 21 защото щом Бог не пощади клоните, които по природа принадлежат на дървото, той няма да пощади и теб, ако спреш да вярваш.

22 Трябва да запомниш и Божието милосърдие, и строгостта му — строгост към онези, които са се отрекли от него, и милосърдие към теб, ако останеш в това милосърдие. Защото ако не останеш, и ти ще бъдеш отрязан от дървото, 23 а юдеите ще бъдат присадени обратно, ако не упорстват в неверието си, тъй като Бог е способен да ги присади отново. 24 Щом като ти, който беше отрязан от диво маслиново дърво, на което принадлежеше по природа, и — противно на природата — беше присаден към облагородено маслиново дърво, толкова по-лесно е тези, които по природа са облагородени маслинови клонки, да бъдат присадени отново към дървото, на което принадлежат по природа.

25 Братя и сестри, искам да разберете тази скрита истина (за да не разчитате твърде много на собствената си мъдрост): част от народа на Израел упорито отказа да повярва, но това ще се промени, когато пълният брой езичници дойдат при Бога. 26 И по този начин целият Израел ще се спаси. 28 Отказвайки да приемат Благата вест, юдеите стават врагове на Бога заради вас, езичниците, но Бог избра юдеите и ги обича заради обещанията си към предците им. 29 Защото Бог никога не променя решението си за тези, които призовава, и за това, което дава. 30 Както вие някога не се покорявахте на Бога, но сега получихте неговата милост заради непокорството на юдеите, 31 така сега те станаха непокорни, защото Бог прояви милост към вас, за да могат те също да получат Божията милост. 32 Защото Бог е заключил всички хора в затвора на непокорството, за да може да покаже милост към всички.

Възхвала на Бога

33 Колко дълбоки са Божиите богатства и неговата мъдрост и знание! Колко необясними са присъдите му и неразбираеми — пътищата му! 34 Както казва Писанието:

„Кой знае ума на Господа?
    Кой може да му бъде съветник?(G)
35 Кой му е дал нещо, за да е длъжен Бог
    да му се отплати?“(H)

36 Защото всичко е създадено от Бога и съществува чрез него и за него. Слава на Бога завинаги! Амин.

2 Не е отхвърлил Бог людете Си, които е предузнал. Или не знаете що казва писанието за Илия? как вика към Бога против Израиля, казвайки:

3 "Господи, избиха пророците Ти, разкопаха олтарите Ти, и аз останах сам; но и моя живот искат да отнемат".

4 Но що му казва божественият отговор? 5 Така и в сегашно време има остатък, избран по благодат

6 Но, ако е по благодат, не е вече от дела, иначе благодатта не е вече благодат [а ако е от делата, не е вече благодат, иначе делото не е вече дело].

7 Тогава какво? Онова, което Израил търсеше, това не получи, но избраните го получиха, а останалите се закоравиха даже до днес:

8 както е писано: "Бог им даде дух на безчуствие, очи 9 И Давид казва: 10 Да се помрачат очите им, та да не виждат, И сгърби гърба им за винаги".

11 Тогава казвам: Спънаха ли се, та да паднат? Да не бъде! Но чрез тяхното отклонение дойде спасението на езичниците,за да ги възбуди към ревност.

12 А, ако тяхното отклонение значи богатство за света и тяхното отпадане 13 Защото на вас, които бяхте езичници, казвам, че понеже съм апостол на езичниците, аз славя моята служба,

14 дано по някакъв начин възбудя към ревност тия, които са моя плът, и да спася накои от тях.

15 Защото, ако тяхното отхвърляне значи примирение на света, какво ще бъде приемането им, ако не оживяване от мъртвите?

16 А ако първото от тестото е свято, то и цялото засяване е свято; и ако коренът е свят, то и клоните са свети.

17 Но, ако някои клони са били отрязани, и ти, бидейки дива маслина, си бил присаден между тях, и си станал съучастник с тях в тлъстия корен на маслината,

18 не се хвали между клоните; но ако се хвалиш, знай, че ти не държиш корена, а коренът тебе.

19 Но ще речеш: Отрязаха се клони, за да се присадя аз.

20 Добре, поради неверие те се отрязаха, а ти поради вяра стоиш. Не високоумствувай, но бой се.

21 Защото, ако Бог не пощади естествените клони, нито тебе ще пощади.

22 Виж, прочее, благостта и строгостта Божии; строгост към падналите, а божествена благост към тебе, ако останеш в тая благост; иначе, и ти ще бъдеш отсечен.

23 Така и те, ако не останат в неверие, ще се присадят; защото Бог може пак да ги присади.

24 Понеже, ако ти си бил отсечен от маслина, по естество дива, и, против естеството, си бил присаден на питомна маслина, то колко повече ония, които са естествени клони, ще се присадят на своята маслина!

25 Защото, братя, за да не се мислите за мъдри, искам да знаете тая тайна, че частично закоравяване сполетя Израиля, само докато влезе пълното число на езичниците.

26 И така целият Израил ще се спаси, както е писано: 27 И ето завета на Мене към тях: Когато отнема греховете им"

28 Колкото за благовестието, те са неприятели, което е за наша полза, а колкото за избора, те са въблюбени заради бащите.

29 Защото даровете и призванието от Бога са неотменими.

30 Защото както вие някога се непокорявахте (Или: Неповярвахте 31 също така и те сега се не покоряват.

32 Защото Бог затвори всички в непокорство, та към всички да покаже милост.

33 О колко дълбоко е богатството на премъдростта и знанието на Бога! Колко са непостижими Неговите съдби, и неизследими пътищата Му!

34 Защото, "Кой е познал ума на Господа, Или, кой Му е бил съветник?"

35 или, "Кой от по-напред Му е дал нещо, Та да му се отплати?"

36 Защото всичко е от Него, чрез Него и за Него, Нему да бъде слава до векове. Амин.

God Shows Mercy to All People

11 So I ask: Did God ·throw out [cast away; reject] his people? ·No [Absolutely not; May it never be; 9:14]! I myself am an Israelite from the ·family [descendants; L seed] of Abraham, from the tribe of Benjamin. 2 God has not ·thrown out [cast away; rejected] his people, whom he ·chose [or knew] ·long ago [from the beginning; L beforehand]. ·Surely you know [L Do you not know…?] what the Scripture says about Elijah, how he ·prayed [appealed; complained] to God against the people of Israel. 3 “Lord,” he said, “they have killed your prophets, and they have ·destroyed [torn/burned down] your altars. I am the only one left, and now they are ·trying to kill me, too [seeking my life; 1 Kin. 19:10, 14].” 4 But what ·answer did God give Elijah [L was the divine response]? He said, “But I have ·left [kept for myself] seven thousand ·people [or men] in Israel who have not bowed ·down [L the knee] before Baal [1 Kin. 19:18].” 5 It is the same now. There ·are a few people [is a remnant] that God has chosen by his grace. 6 And if he chose them by grace, it is not ·for the things they have done [by works]. If they could be made God’s people by ·what they did [works], God’s gift of grace would ·not really [or no longer] be a gift.

7 ·So this is what has happened [What follows from this? L What then?]: ·The people of Israel [L Israel] did not ·succeed in [attain; obtain; find] what they were ·striving [looking; seeking] for, but the ·ones God chose [elect] did ·succeed [attain/obtain/find it]. The ·others [rest] were ·made stubborn and refused to listen to God [L hardened]. 8 As it is written in the Scriptures:

“God gave the people a ·dull mind [L spirit of stupor/insensitivity] so they could not understand [Is. 29:10].”
“He ·closed their eyes so they [or gave them eyes that] could not see
    and ·their ears so they [or gave them ears that] could not hear.
This continues until today [Deut. 29:4].”

9 And David says:

“Let their ·own feasts [L table] ·trap them and cause their ruin [L become a snare and a trap],
    becoming a ·stumbling block [pitfall] and ·paying them back [their retribution].
10 Let their eyes be ·closed [L darkened] so they cannot see
    and their backs be ·forever [or continually] ·weak from troubles [L bent over; Ps. 69:22–23].”

11 So I ask: When ·the Jews [L they] fell, did ·that fall destroy them [or they fall beyond recovery]? ·No [Absolutely not; May it never be; 11:1]! But their ·failure [transgression; violation] brought salvation to the Gentiles, in order to make ·the Jews [L them] jealous. 12 [L But if…] Their ·failure [transgression/violation] brought ·rich blessings [L riches] for the world, and their ·loss [defeat; failure] brought ·rich blessings [L riches] for the Gentiles. ·So surely the world will receive much richer blessings [L How much more…!] ·when enough Jews become the kind of people God wants [or when the appointed number of Jews is saved; or when the nation as a whole is restored; L at their fullness].

13 Now I am speaking to you Gentiles. ·Since [or As long as] I am an apostle to the Gentiles [Acts 9:15; 22:21; Gal. 2:8], I ·will make the most of [glory in; take pride in; magnify] my ministry. 14 ·I hope […if somehow] I can make my own ·people [flesh] jealous and, in that way, help some of them to be saved. 15 [L For] If ·God’s rejection of Israel [L their loss/rejection] meant he ·became friends with [was reconciled to] the world, what will Israel’s acceptance mean? It will be like ·bringing the dead back to life [life from the dead].

16 If the ·first piece of bread is offered to God [L firstfruits are holy; C the dough made from the first crops harvested], then the whole ·loaf [batch; L lump of dough] is made holy. If the roots of a tree are holy, then the tree’s branches are holy too [C since Abraham and the patriarchs were God’s chosen people, so were their Jewish descendants].

17 It is as if some of the branches from an olive tree [C symbolizing Israel] have been broken off. You Gentiles are like the branch of a wild olive tree that has been ·joined [grafted] to that first tree. You now share the ·strength and life [nourishment; L rich/fat root] of the first tree [C the Gentiles now share in the rich blessings promised to Israel through their “root,” Abraham and the patriarchs]. 18 So do not ·brag about [boast over; consider yourselves superior to] those branches that were broken off. If you ·brag [boast], remember that you do not support the root, but the root supports you. 19 [L Then] You will say, “Branches were broken off so that I could be ·joined to their tree [grafted in].” 20 That is true. But those branches were broken off because they ·did not believe [were unfaithful], and you ·continue to be part of the tree only because you believe [L stand by faith]. Do not be ·proud [arrogant], but be ·afraid [in awe]. 21 [L For] If God did not spare the natural branches, then he will not spare you either.

22 ·So you see [Notice; Consider] that God is kind and also ·very strict [stern; severe; harsh]. He ·punishes [is strict/severe/harsh toward] those who ·stop following him [have fallen]. But God is kind to you, if you continue ·following in [trusting in; L in] his kindness. If you do not, you will also be cut off from the tree. 23 And if ·the Jews [L they] ·will believe in God again [L do not continue in unbelief], ·he will accept them back [L they will be grafted in]. [L For] God is able to ·put them back where they were [graft them in again]. 24 [L For] If ·you Gentiles [you] were cut off from a wild olive tree and, contrary to nature, ·joined to [grafted into] a ·good [cultivated] olive tree, how much more will these natural branches [C Jews presently rejecting the gospel] be ·joined to [grafted into] their own olive tree again.

25 I ·want you to understand [L do not want you to be ignorant of] this ·secret [mystery; C something God had not previously disclosed; Eph. 1:9], brothers and sisters, so you will ·understand that you do not know everything [not become conceited/arrogant/superior-minded]: ·Part of Israel has been made stubborn [or A partial hardening has happened to Israel], ·but that will change when [L until] the ·complete number [or appointed number; L fullness] of the Gentiles have come ·to God [or into the kingdom; L in]. 26 And ·that is how [in this way; or so it will be that; or so in the end] all Israel will be saved. [L As; Just as] It is written in the Scriptures:

“The ·Savior [Rescuer; Deliverer] will come from ·Jerusalem [L Zion; C a poetic term for Jerusalem symbolizing the nation Israel];
    he will take away ·all evil [wickedness; godlessness] from ·the family of Jacob [L Jacob; C Abraham’s grandson (renamed “Israel”), whose sons became the twelve tribes of Israel; Is. 59:20–21].
27 And I will make this ·agreement [covenant] with those people
    when I take away their sins [Is. 27:9].”

28 ·The Jews refuse to accept the Good News, so [L With regard to the Gospel,] they are God’s enemies. ·This has happened to help you who are not Jews [L …for your sake; C Israel’s rejection resulted in the proclamation of the Good News to the Gentiles; vv. 11, 12]. But ·the Jews are still God’s chosen people, and he loves them very much [L with regard to election, they are beloved] because of ·the promises he made to their ancestors [L the ancestors/fathers/patriarchs]. 29 ·God never changes his mind about the people he calls and the things he gives them [L For God’s gifts and calling are irrevocable]. 30 [L For] At one time you refused to obey God. But now you have received mercy, because those people refused to obey. 31 And now the Jews refuse to obey, ·because God showed mercy to you. But this happened so that they also can[a] receive mercy from him [or but this happened so that they also can[b] receive mercy from him, because of the mercy God showed to you]. 32 God has ·given [imprisoned] all people ·over to their stubborn ways [L to/in disobedience] so that he can show mercy to all.

Praise to God

33 ·Yes [L O], ·how great are [L the depth of] ·God’s riches and wisdom and knowledge [or the riches of God’s wisdom and knowledge]! ·No one can explain [L How unsearchable are…] ·the things God decides [God’s judgments] ·or understand [L …and untraceable…!] his ·ways [paths]. 34 As the Scripture says,

“[L For] Who has known the mind of the Lord,
    or who has been ·able to give him advice [his counselor; Is. 40:13]?”
35 “·No one [L Or who…?] has ever given God anything
    that he must pay back [Job 41:11].”

36 ·Yes, God made all things, and everything continues through him and for him [L Because all things come from him, through him and for him]. To him be the glory forever! Amen.

The Remnant of Israel

11 I ask then: Did God reject his people? By no means!(A) I am an Israelite myself, a descendant of Abraham,(B) from the tribe of Benjamin.(C) 2 God did not reject his people,(D) whom he foreknew.(E) Don’t you know what Scripture says in the passage about Elijah—how he appealed to God against Israel: 3 “Lord, they have killed your prophets and torn down your altars; I am the only one left, and they are trying to kill me”[a]?(F) 4 And what was God’s answer to him? “I have reserved for myself seven thousand who have not bowed the knee to Baal.”[b](G) 5 So too, at the present time there is a remnant(H) chosen by grace.(I) 6 And if by grace, then it cannot be based on works;(J) if it were, grace would no longer be grace.

7 What then? What the people of Israel sought so earnestly they did not obtain.(K) The elect among them did, but the others were hardened,(L) 8 as it is written:

“God gave them a spirit of stupor,
    eyes that could not see
    and ears that could not hear,(M)
to this very day.”[c](N)

9 And David says:

“May their table become a snare and a trap,
    a stumbling block and a retribution for them.
10 May their eyes be darkened so they cannot see,(O)
    and their backs be bent forever.”[d](P)

Ingrafted Branches

11 Again I ask: Did they stumble so as to fall beyond recovery? Not at all!(Q) Rather, because of their transgression, salvation has come to the Gentiles(R) to make Israel envious.(S) 12 But if their transgression means riches for the world, and their loss means riches for the Gentiles,(T) how much greater riches will their full inclusion bring!

13 I am talking to you Gentiles. Inasmuch as I am the apostle to the Gentiles,(U) I take pride in my ministry 14 in the hope that I may somehow arouse my own people to envy(V) and save(W) some of them. 15 For if their rejection brought reconciliation(X) to the world, what will their acceptance be but life from the dead?(Y) 16 If the part of the dough offered as firstfruits(Z) is holy, then the whole batch is holy; if the root is holy, so are the branches.

17 If some of the branches have been broken off,(AA) and you, though a wild olive shoot, have been grafted in among the others(AB) and now share in the nourishing sap from the olive root, 18 do not consider yourself to be superior to those other branches. If you do, consider this: You do not support the root, but the root supports you.(AC) 19 You will say then, “Branches were broken off so that I could be grafted in.” 20 Granted. But they were broken off because of unbelief, and you stand by faith.(AD) Do not be arrogant,(AE) but tremble.(AF) 21 For if God did not spare the natural branches, he will not spare you either.

22 Consider therefore the kindness(AG) and sternness of God: sternness to those who fell, but kindness to you, provided that you continue(AH) in his kindness. Otherwise, you also will be cut off.(AI) 23 And if they do not persist in unbelief, they will be grafted in, for God is able to graft them in again.(AJ) 24 After all, if you were cut out of an olive tree that is wild by nature, and contrary to nature were grafted into a cultivated olive tree,(AK) how much more readily will these, the natural branches, be grafted into their own olive tree!

All Israel Will Be Saved

25 I do not want you to be ignorant(AL) of this mystery,(AM) brothers and sisters, so that you may not be conceited:(AN) Israel has experienced a hardening(AO) in part until the full number of the Gentiles has come in,(AP) 26 and in this way[e] all Israel will be saved.(AQ) As it is written:

“The deliverer will come from Zion;
    he will turn godlessness away from Jacob.
27 And this is[f] my covenant with them
    when I take away their sins.”[g](AR)

28 As far as the gospel is concerned, they are enemies(AS) for your sake; but as far as election is concerned, they are loved on account of the patriarchs,(AT) 29 for God’s gifts and his call(AU) are irrevocable.(AV) 30 Just as you who were at one time disobedient(AW) to God have now received mercy as a result of their disobedience, 31 so they too have now become disobedient in order that they too may now[h] receive mercy as a result of God’s mercy to you. 32 For God has bound everyone over to disobedience(AX) so that he may have mercy on them all.

Doxology

33 Oh, the depth of the riches(AY) of the wisdom and[i] knowledge of God!(AZ)
    How unsearchable his judgments,
    and his paths beyond tracing out!(BA)
34 “Who has known the mind of the Lord?
    Or who has been his counselor?”[j](BB)
35 “Who has ever given to God,
    that God should repay them?”[k](BC)
36 For from him and through him and for him are all things.(BD)
    To him be the glory forever! Amen.(BE)
