Lament Over Fallen Babylon
18 After this I saw another angel(A) coming down from heaven.(B) He had great authority, and the earth was illuminated by his splendor.(C) 2 With a mighty voice he shouted:
“‘Fallen! Fallen is Babylon the Great!’[a](D)
She has become a dwelling for demons
and a haunt for every impure spirit,(E)
a haunt for every unclean bird,
a haunt for every unclean and detestable animal.(F)
3 For all the nations have drunk
the maddening wine of her adulteries.(G)
The kings of the earth committed adultery with her,(H)
and the merchants of the earth grew rich(I) from her excessive luxuries.”(J)
Warning to Escape Babylon’s Judgment
4 Then I heard another voice from heaven say:
“‘Come out of her, my people,’[b](K)
so that you will not share in her sins,
so that you will not receive any of her plagues;(L)
5 for her sins are piled up to heaven,(M)
and God has remembered(N) her crimes.
6 Give back to her as she has given;
pay her back(O) double(P) for what she has done.
Pour her a double portion from her own cup.(Q)
7 Give her as much torment and grief
as the glory and luxury she gave herself.(R)
In her heart she boasts,
‘I sit enthroned as queen.
I am not a widow;[c]
I will never mourn.’(S)
8 Therefore in one day(T) her plagues will overtake her:
death, mourning and famine.
She will be consumed by fire,(U)
for mighty is the Lord God who judges her.
Threefold Woe Over Babylon’s Fall
9 “When the kings of the earth who committed adultery with her(V) and shared her luxury(W) see the smoke of her burning,(X) they will weep and mourn over her.(Y) 10 Terrified at her torment, they will stand far off(Z) and cry:
11 “The merchants(AC) of the earth will weep and mourn(AD) over her because no one buys their cargoes anymore(AE)— 12 cargoes of gold, silver, precious stones and pearls; fine linen, purple, silk and scarlet cloth; every sort of citron wood, and articles of every kind made of ivory, costly wood, bronze, iron and marble;(AF) 13 cargoes of cinnamon and spice, of incense, myrrh and frankincense, of wine and olive oil, of fine flour and wheat; cattle and sheep; horses and carriages; and human beings sold as slaves.(AG)
14 “They will say, ‘The fruit you longed for is gone from you. All your luxury and splendor have vanished, never to be recovered.’ 15 The merchants who sold these things and gained their wealth from her(AH) will stand far off,(AI) terrified at her torment. They will weep and mourn(AJ) 16 and cry out:
“‘Woe! Woe to you, great city,(AK)
dressed in fine linen, purple and scarlet,
and glittering with gold, precious stones and pearls!(AL)
17 In one hour(AM) such great wealth has been brought to ruin!’(AN)
“Every sea captain, and all who travel by ship, the sailors, and all who earn their living from the sea,(AO) will stand far off.(AP) 18 When they see the smoke of her burning,(AQ) they will exclaim, ‘Was there ever a city like this great city(AR)?’(AS) 19 They will throw dust on their heads,(AT) and with weeping and mourning(AU) cry out:
“‘Woe! Woe to you, great city,(AV)
where all who had ships on the sea
became rich through her wealth!
In one hour she has been brought to ruin!’(AW)
20 “Rejoice over her, you heavens!(AX)
Rejoice, you people of God!
Rejoice, apostles and prophets!
For God has judged her
with the judgment she imposed on you.”(AY)
The Finality of Babylon’s Doom
21 Then a mighty angel(AZ) picked up a boulder the size of a large millstone and threw it into the sea,(BA) and said:
“With such violence
the great city(BB) of Babylon will be thrown down,
never to be found again.
22 The music of harpists and musicians, pipers and trumpeters,
will never be heard in you again.(BC)
No worker of any trade
will ever be found in you again.
The sound of a millstone
will never be heard in you again.(BD)
23 The light of a lamp
will never shine in you again.
The voice of bridegroom and bride
will never be heard in you again.(BE)
Your merchants were the world’s important people.(BF)
By your magic spell(BG) all the nations were led astray.
24 In her was found the blood of prophets and of God’s holy people,(BH)
of all who have been slaughtered on the earth.”(BI)

18 После этого я увидел ещё одного ангела, сходящего с небес и обладающего великой властью; вся земля была озарена его славой. 2 Он произнёс могучим голосом:
– Пала, пала великая блудница Вавилон[a]
и стала жилищем демонов,
пристанищем для всякого нечистого духа
и всякой нечистой и мерзкой птицы.
Все народы пили
доводящее до безумия вино её разврата.
3 Цари земли развратничали с ней,
и купцы земли нажились на её необузданной тяге к роскоши.
4 Затем я услышал с небес ещё один голос. Он сказал:
– Выйди из неё, народ мой,
чтобы тебе не участвовать в её грехах
и не подвергнуться её наказанию,
5 потому что её грехи поднялись уже до небес,[b]
и Аллах помнит её преступления.
6 Сделайте ей то же, что она сделала другим,
и отплатите ей вдвойне за её дела.
В той самой чаше, в которой она замешивала своё вино,
замешайте ей напиток двойной крепости.
7 Доставьте ей столько горя и страданий,
сколько она позволяла себе славы и роскоши,
потому что она хвалится в своём сердце:
«Я не какая-нибудь вдова! Я сижу как царица!
Я никогда не буду скорбеть!»
8 И поэтому настанет день, когда её постигнут горести:
смерть, плачь и голод.
Она будет сожжена огнём,
потому что могуч Вечный Бог, осудивший её.[c]
9 Когда цари земли, которые развратничали с ней и наслаждались её роскошью, увидят дым от её пожарища, они будут рыдать по ней и бить себя в грудь.[d] 10 Стоя вдали в ужасе от её мучений, они будут говорить:
– Горе! Горе! О великая столица!
О, Вавилон, могучая столица!
В один час свершился над тобой суд!
11 Купцы земли плачут и скорбят по ней, потому что никто уже не покупает их товаров: 12 товаров из золота, серебра, драгоценных камней и жемчуга; тончайших льняных тканей, пурпура, шёлка и алых материй; ароматической древесины; изделий из слоновой кости, ценной древесины, бронзы, железа и мрамора; 13 корицы, пряностей, благовоний, ароматического масла и ладана[e], вина, оливкового масла, отборной муки и пшеницы, крупного и мелкого скота, коней и колесниц, рабов и пленённых на войне.[f] 14 Они будут говорить:
– Плодов, которых желала душа твоя, уже нет у тебя. Все твои богатства и слава покинули тебя, и уже никогда не вернутся.
15 Торговавшие этими товарами купцы, нажившиеся на ней, будут стоять в стороне, перепуганные её бедствиями. Они будут плакать и скорбеть, 16 говоря:
– Горе! Горе! О великая столица,
одетая в тончайшую льняную одежду, в пурпурное и алое,
украшенная золотом, драгоценными камнями и жемчугом!
17 В один час было уничтожено такое огромное богатство!
Все капитаны кораблей, все их пассажиры и моряки и все, чей промысел связан с мореплаванием, будут издали наблюдать, 18 и, когда увидят дым, поднимающийся от неё, зарыдают:
– Разве был ещё когда-либо город, подобный этой великой столице?[g]
19 Они посыпали свои головы пылью[h] и со слезами и скорбью причитали:
– Горе! Горе! О великая столица,
обогатившая всех судовладельцев своим богатством!
В один час ты была уничтожена!
20 – Радуйтесь об этом, небеса!
Радуйся, святой народ Аллаха, посланники Масиха и пророки,
потому что Аллах осудил её за то, как она поступала с вами.
21 Затем могучий ангел взял большой камень размером с мельничный жёрнов и бросил его в море, говоря:
– Так будет брошен и Вавилон, великая столица,
и никто уже её не найдёт.
22 Никогда уже в тебе не будет слышно
голоса певцов, музыки арфистов, свирельщиков и трубачей,
никогда уже в тебе не отыщутся
ремесленники, каким бы ремеслом они ни занимались,
никогда уже не будет слышно в тебе
шума мельничных жерновов.
23 Никогда уже не будет гореть в тебе свет светильника,
не будет слышно голосов жениха и невесты.
Твои купцы были господами на земле,
и все народы были обмануты твоим колдовством.
24 Но в этой столице пролилась кровь пророков, святого народа Аллаха
и всех убитых на земле.

2 And he cried mightily with a strong voice, saying, Babylon the great is fallen, is fallen, and is become the habitation of devils, and the hold of every foul spirit, and a cage of every unclean and hateful bird.
3 For all nations have drunk of the wine of the wrath of her fornication, and the kings of the earth have committed fornication with her, and the merchants of the earth are waxed rich through the abundance of her delicacies.
4 And I heard another voice from heaven, saying, Come out of her, my people, that ye be not partakers of her sins, and that ye receive not of her plagues.
5 For her sins have reached unto heaven, and God hath remembered her iniquities.
6 Reward her even as she rewarded you, and double unto her double according to her works: in the cup which she hath filled fill to her double.
7 How much she hath glorified herself, and lived deliciously, so much torment and sorrow give her: for she saith in her heart, I sit a queen, and am no widow, and shall see no sorrow.
8 Therefore shall her plagues come in one day, death, and mourning, and famine; and she shall be utterly burned with fire: for strong is the Lord God who judgeth her.
9 And the kings of the earth, who have committed fornication and lived deliciously with her, shall bewail her, and lament for her, when they shall see the smoke of her burning,
10 Standing afar off for the fear of her torment, saying, Alas, alas that great city Babylon, that mighty city! for in one hour is thy judgment come.
11 And the merchants of the earth shall weep and mourn over her; for no man buyeth their merchandise any more:
12 The merchandise of gold, and silver, and precious stones, and of pearls, and fine linen, and purple, and silk, and scarlet, and all thyine wood, and all manner vessels of ivory, and all manner vessels of most precious wood, and of brass, and iron, and marble,
13 And cinnamon, and odours, and ointments, and frankincense, and wine, and oil, and fine flour, and wheat, and beasts, and sheep, and horses, and chariots, and slaves, and souls of men.
14 And the fruits that thy soul lusted after are departed from thee, and all things which were dainty and goodly are departed from thee, and thou shalt find them no more at all.
15 The merchants of these things, which were made rich by her, shall stand afar off for the fear of her torment, weeping and wailing,
16 And saying, Alas, alas that great city, that was clothed in fine linen, and purple, and scarlet, and decked with gold, and precious stones, and pearls!
17 For in one hour so great riches is come to nought. And every shipmaster, and all the company in ships, and sailors, and as many as trade by sea, stood afar off,
18 And cried when they saw the smoke of her burning, saying, What city is like unto this great city!
19 And they cast dust on their heads, and cried, weeping and wailing, saying, Alas, alas that great city, wherein were made rich all that had ships in the sea by reason of her costliness! for in one hour is she made desolate.
20 Rejoice over her, thou heaven, and ye holy apostles and prophets; for God hath avenged you on her.
21 And a mighty angel took up a stone like a great millstone, and cast it into the sea, saying, Thus with violence shall that great city Babylon be thrown down, and shall be found no more at all.
22 And the voice of harpers, and musicians, and of pipers, and trumpeters, shall be heard no more at all in thee; and no craftsman, of whatsoever craft he be, shall be found any more in thee; and the sound of a millstone shall be heard no more at all in thee;
23 And the light of a candle shall shine no more at all in thee; and the voice of the bridegroom and of the bride shall be heard no more at all in thee: for thy merchants were the great men of the earth; for by thy sorceries were all nations deceived.
24 And in her was found the blood of prophets, and of saints, and of all that were slain upon the earth.

De vernietiging van de stad Babylon
18 Daarna zag ik een andere, heel machtige engel uit de hemel komen. De hele aarde werd verlicht door de glans van die engel. 2 En hij riep luid: "Vernietigd! Vernietigd is de grote stad Babylon! Het is de woonplaats geworden van duivels, een gevangenis voor duivelse geesten en allerlei onreine, walgelijke vogels.[a] 3 Dat is gebeurd omdat alle volken hebben gedronken van de wijn van Babylons slechtheid. Alle koningen van de aarde hebben met haar slechtheid meegedaan. En de handelaren van de hele wereld zijn rijk geworden door haar enorme rijkdom."
4 Toen hoorde ik een andere stem uit de hemel zeggen: "Mijn volk, ga uit die stad weg! Dan zullen jullie niet gaan meedoen met haar slechtheid. En dan zullen jullie niet door dezelfde rampen worden getroffen als zij. 5 Want haar slechtheid heeft zich opgestapeld tot aan de hemel. God is er niets van vergeten en gaat haar er nu voor straffen. 6 Doe met haar wat zij met jullie heeft gedaan. Betaal haar alles dubbel terug. Geef haar het dubbele van wat zijzelf anderen heeft aangedaan. 7 Ze heeft eerst van haar rijkdommen en plezier genoten. Geef haar er nu net zoveel pijn en verdriet voor terug. Want ze zegt bij zichzelf: 'Ik zit als een koningin op mijn troon. Ik ben geen hulpeloze weduwe. Ik zal nooit verdriet hebben.' 8 Daarom zal ze op één dag door alle rampen tegelijk getroffen worden: dood, verdriet en hongersnood, en ze zal verbrand worden. Want de Heer God die over haar rechtspreekt, is machtig.
9 En de koningen van de aarde die met haar slechtheid hebben meegedaan en door haar rijk geworden zijn, zullen haar in brand zien staan en de rook zien opstijgen. Ze zullen over haar huilen en jammeren. 10 Ze zullen uit de verte toekijken, geschokt over de pijn die ze heeft. En ze zullen zeggen: 'Wat vreselijk! Jij grote, sterke stad Babylon, in één ogenblik ben je vernietigd!' 11 En de handelaren van de aarde zullen over haar huilen en treuren, omdat er nu niemand meer is die hun koopwaar nog koopt. 12 Want Babylon kocht alles: goud, zilver, edelstenen en parels, fijn linnen, dure blauw en rood geverfde stoffen, zijde, geurig hout, allerlei voorwerpen van ivoor en van dure houtsoorten, van koper, ijzer en marmer, 13 ook kaneel, specerijen, wierook, parfum, wijn, olijf-olie, meel en tarwe, kamelen en ezels, schapen, paarden en wagens, en lichamen en zielen van mensen. 14 Ze zullen uitroepen: 'Al die heerlijke en mooie en dure dingen die je zo graag wilde hebben, zijn verdwenen. Je zal ze nooit meer terugkrijgen!'
15 De handelaren die deze dingen kochten en verkochten en die rijk waren geworden door ze aan Babylon te verkopen, zullen uit de verte toekijken. Ze zullen geschokt zijn over de pijn die ze heeft. 16 En ze zullen erover huilen en jammeren, en zeggen: 'Wat vreselijk! Die grote stad, vol prachtige kleren van fijn linnen en van dure blauwe en rode stoffen, die stad die rijk versierd was met goud, edelstenen en parels, is in één ogenblik met al die rijkdom verwoest!' 17 En alle zeelui en matrozen, alle mensen die met handel van overzee hun brood verdienen, zullen uit de verte blijven kijken. 18 Als ze de stad in brand zien staan en de rook zien opstijgen, zullen ze zeggen: 'Geen één stad was zo geweldig als deze stad!' 19 Ze gooien stof op hun hoofd van verdriet en roepen huilend: 'Wat verschrikkelijk, die grote stad waardoor alle zeelui rijk zijn geworden, is in één ogenblik verwoest!'
20 Maar jullie, hemel en mensen die bij God horen, boodschappers van God en profeten, wees blij over wat er met die stad gebeurt! Want God heeft haar gestraft voor wat ze jullie heeft aangedaan."
21 En een sterke engel pakte een steen op, zo groot als een molensteen. Hij gooide hem in zee en zei: "Net zó zal de grote stad Babylon worden weggegooid. Ze zal niet meer bestaan. 22 Nooit meer zal er muziek van harpspelers, zangers, fluitspelers of hoornblazers in de stad worden gehoord. Niemand zal ooit nog iets moois maken in deze stad. Nooit meer zal het geluid van een molensteen te horen zijn. 23 Nooit meer zullen er lampen branden. Nooit meer zal de stem van bruid en bruidegom in de stad worden gehoord. Ooit heersten haar handelaren over de aarde. Door haar toverkunsten werden de mensen verleid tot ongehoorzaamheid aan God. 24 De stad is schuldig aan de dood van profeten en gelovigen en van alle mensen die op aarde zijn gedood." (lees verder)
