Падение Вавилона
18 После этого я увидел ещё одного ангела, сходящего с небес и обладающего великой властью; вся земля была озарена его славой. 2 Он произнёс могучим голосом:
– Пала, пала великая блудница Вавилон[a]
и стала жилищем демонов,
пристанищем для всякого нечистого духа
и всякой нечистой и мерзкой птицы.
Все народы пили
доводящее до безумия вино её разврата.
3 Цари земли развратничали с ней,
и купцы земли нажились на её необузданной тяге к роскоши.
4 Затем я услышал с небес ещё один голос. Он сказал:
– Выйди из неё, народ мой,
чтобы тебе не участвовать в её грехах
и не подвергнуться её наказанию,
5 потому что её грехи поднялись уже до небес,[b]
и Всевышний помнит её преступления.
6 Сделайте ей то же, что она сделала другим,
и отплатите ей вдвойне за её дела.
В той самой чаше, в которой она замешивала своё вино,
замешайте ей напиток двойной крепости.
7 Доставьте ей столько горя и страданий,
сколько она позволяла себе славы и роскоши,
потому что она хвалится в своём сердце:
«Я не какая-нибудь вдова! Я сижу как царица!
Я никогда не буду скорбеть!»
8 И поэтому настанет день, когда её постигнут горести:
смерть, плачь и голод.
Она будет сожжена огнём,
потому что могуч Вечный Бог, осудивший её.[c]
9 Когда цари земли, которые развратничали с ней и наслаждались её роскошью, увидят дым от её пожарища, они будут рыдать по ней и бить себя в грудь.[d] 10 Стоя вдали в ужасе от её мучений, они будут говорить:
– Горе! Горе! О великая столица!
О, Вавилон, могучая столица!
В один час свершился над тобой суд!
11 Купцы земли плачут и скорбят по ней, потому что никто уже не покупает их товаров: 12 товаров из золота, серебра, драгоценных камней и жемчуга; тончайших льняных тканей, пурпура, шёлка и алых материй; ароматической древесины; изделий из слоновой кости, ценной древесины, бронзы, железа и мрамора; 13 корицы, пряностей, благовоний, ароматического масла и ладана[e], вина, оливкового масла, отборной муки и пшеницы, крупного и мелкого скота, коней и колесниц, рабов и пленённых на войне.[f] 14 Они будут говорить:
– Плодов, которых желала душа твоя, уже нет у тебя. Все твои богатства и слава покинули тебя, и уже никогда не вернутся.
15 Торговавшие этими товарами купцы, нажившиеся на ней, будут стоять в стороне, перепуганные её бедствиями. Они будут плакать и скорбеть, 16 говоря:
– Горе! Горе! О великая столица,
одетая в тончайшую льняную одежду, в пурпурное и алое,
украшенная золотом, драгоценными камнями и жемчугом!
17 В один час было уничтожено такое огромное богатство!
Все капитаны кораблей, все их пассажиры и моряки и все, чей промысел связан с мореплаванием, будут издали наблюдать, 18 и, когда увидят дым, поднимающийся от неё, зарыдают:
– Разве был ещё когда-либо город, подобный этой великой столице?[g]
19 Они посыпали свои головы пылью[h] и со слезами и скорбью причитали:
– Горе! Горе! О великая столица,
обогатившая всех судовладельцев своим богатством!
В один час ты была уничтожена!
20 – Радуйтесь об этом, небеса!
Радуйся, святой народ Всевышнего, посланники Масиха и пророки,
потому что Всевышний осудил её за то, как она поступала с вами.
21 Затем могучий ангел взял большой камень размером с мельничный жёрнов и бросил его в море, говоря:
– Так будет брошен и Вавилон, великая столица,
и никто уже её не найдёт.
22 Никогда уже в тебе не будет слышно
голоса певцов, музыки арфистов, свирельщиков и трубачей,
никогда уже в тебе не отыщутся
ремесленники, каким бы ремеслом они ни занимались,
никогда уже не будет слышно в тебе
шума мельничных жерновов.
23 Никогда уже не будет гореть в тебе свет светильника,
не будет слышно голосов жениха и невесты.
Твои купцы были господами на земле,
и все народы были обмануты твоим колдовством.
24 Но в этой столице пролилась кровь пророков, святого народа Всевышнего
и всех убитых на земле.

18 Dopo queste cose, vidi scendere dal cielo un altro angelo che aveva una grande potestà; e la terra fu illuminata dalla sua gloria.
2 Egli gridò con forza e a gran voce, dicendo: «E' caduta, è caduta Babilonia la grande, ed è diventata una dimora di demoni, un covo di ogni spirito immondo, un covo di ogni uccello immondo ed abominevole.
3 Perché tutte le nazioni hanno bevuto del vino dell'ardore della sua fornicazione, i re della terra hanno fornicato con lei e i mercanti della terra si sono arricchiti a motivo del suo sfrenato lusso».
4 Poi udii un'altra voce dal cielo che diceva: «Uscite da essa, o popolo mio, affinché non abbiate parte ai suoi peccati e non vi venga addosso alcuna delle sue piaghe,
5 perché i suoi peccati si sono accumulati e sono giunti fino al cielo, e Dio si è ricordato delle sue iniquità.
6 Rendete ciò che essa ha fatto a voi, anzi rendetele il doppio secondo le sue opere; nella coppa in cui ha versato, versatele il doppio.
7 Nella misura che essa ha glorificato se stessa e ha vissuto nelle delizie, nella stessa misura datele tormento e cordoglio, poiché essa dice in cuor suo: "Io seggo come regina, non sono vedova e non vedrò mai cordoglio".
8 Per questo, in uno stesso giorno, verranno le sue piaghe: morte, cordoglio e fame, e sarà interamente consumata col fuoco, poiché potente è il Signore Dio che la giudicherà».
9 E i re della terra, che hanno fornicato e sono vissuti nelle delizie con lei, la piangeranno e faranno lamento per lei, quando vedranno il fumo del suo incendio;
10 essi se ne staranno lontani per timore del suo tormento e diranno: «Ahi! Ahi! Babilonia, la grande città, la potente città, perché il tuo giudizio è venuto in un momento!».
11 Anche i mercanti della terra piangeranno e si lamenteranno per lei, perché nessuno compera piú le loro merci:
12 merci d'oro e d'argento, di pietre preziose e di perle, di bisso e di porpora, di seta e di scarlatto, e ogni sorta di legno profumato, ogni specie di oggetti d'avorio e di legno preziosissimo, di bronzo, di ferro e di marmo,
13 e cinnamomo, profumi, olii odorosi, incenso, vino, olio, fior di farina, frumento, bestiame, pecore, cavalli, carri, corpi e anime umane.
14 I frutti che la tua anima tanto desiderava si sono allontanati da te, e tutte le cose ricche e splendide si sono allontanate da te e tu non le troverai mai piú.
15 I mercanti di queste cose, che erano stati arricchiti da lei, se ne staranno lontani per timore del suo tormento, e piangeranno e si lamenteranno
16 dicendo: «Ahi! Ahi! La grande città che era vestita di bisso, di porpora e di scarlatto, e adorna d'oro e di pietre preziose e di perle. Una cosí grande ricchezza è stata distrutta in un momento!».
17 Tutti i capitani, tutti i passeggeri e i naviganti e tutti quanti commerciano per mare se ne staranno da lontano
18 e, vedendo il fumo del suo incendio grideranno: «Quale città era simile alla grande città?».
19 E si getteranno della polvere sul capo e grideranno, piangendo e lamentandosi, dicendo: «Ahi! Ahi! La grande città in cui tutti coloro che avevano navi sul mare si erano arricchiti della sua magnificenza, perché è stata devastata in un momento!
20 Rallegrati su di essa, o cielo, e voi santi apostoli e profeti perché Dio, giudicandola, vi ha fatto giustizia».
21 Poi un angelo potente sollevò una pietra dalle dimensioni di una grossa macina e la gettò nel mare, dicendo: «Con lo stesso impeto sarà scagliata Babilonia la grande città, e non sarà piú ritrovata;
22 e non si udrà piú in te il suono degli arpisti, dei musicisti e dei suonatori di flauto e di tromba, non si troverà piú in te alcun esperto di qualsiasi arte, e non si udrà piú in te rumore di macina.
23 In te non brillerà piú luce di lampada e non si udrà piú in te voce di sposo e di sposa, perché i tuoi mercanti erano i magnati della terra e perché tutte le genti sono state sedotte dalle tue malìe.
24 E in essa è stato trovato il sangue dei profeti e dei santi e di tutti coloro che sono stati uccisi sulla terra».

Babylon’s plagues
18 After this I saw another angel coming down from heaven with great authority; the earth was lit up with his glory. 2 He shouted out in a strong voice, and this is what he said: “Babylon the great has fallen! She has fallen! She has become a place for demons to live, a refuge for every unclean spirit, a refuge for every unclean bird, a refuge for every unclean, hateful monster. 3 All the nations drank from the wine of the wrath of her fornication; the kings of the earth committed fornication with her, and the traders of the earth became rich from the power of her luxury.”
4 Then I heard another voice from heaven, and this is what it said: “Come out of her, my people, so that you don’t become embroiled in her sins, and so that you don’t receive any of her plagues. 5 Her sins are piled up to the sky, and God has remembered her wickedness. 6 Pay her back as she has paid others; give her double again for all her deeds. Mix her a double dose in her own cup—the cup in which she mixed her poisons. 7 She made herself glorious and lived in luxury; balance that by giving her torture and sorrow! She said in her heart, ‘I’m the queen! I’m on the throne! I’m not a widow! I’m never going to be a mourner!’ 8 Therefore her plagues will come in a single day, death, mourning and famine, and she will be burned with fire, because God the Lord, her judge, is strong.”
Babylon’s judgment
9 The kings of the earth who committed fornication with her and shared her luxury will weep and lament over her when they see the smoke from her fire. 10 They will stand far off, fearful of her tortures. “Alas, alas,” they will say, “the great city! Babylon the powerful city! Your judgment has come in a single hour.” 11 The merchants of the earth will weep and mourn over her, because nobody will buy their cargo anymore, 12 their cargo of gold and silver, of precious stones and pearls, fine linen and purple, silk and scarlet, all the sweet-smelling wood, carved ivory, vessels of expensive wood, brass, iron, marble, 13 cinnamon, oriental spice, incense, myrrh, frankincense, wine, olive oil, fine flour, wheat, cattle, sheep, horses, chariots and bodies . . . yes, human lives.
14 All the fruit for which you longed has gone from you; all your luxuries and sparkling objects have been destroyed; you won’t find them anymore. 15 The merchants who sold these things, and who made themselves rich from her, will stand a long way off for fear of her tortures. They will weep and mourn, 16 and say, “Alas, alas! The great city! It was clothed in fine linen, purple and scarlet, decked out in gold, precious stones and pearls— 17 but in a single hour such great wealth has been destroyed!”
All the master mariners, all those who ply their ships to and fro, all sailors, and all who do business on the sea, stood a long way off 18 and shouted out when they saw the smoke of her fire. “Who is like the great city?” they said. 19 They threw dust on their heads and shouted out, weeping and mourning. “Alas, alas,” they said, “the great city! Everyone who had ships on the sea could get rich from her wealth, but in a single hour she has become a desert.”
20 Celebrate over her, heaven, and you holy ones, apostles and prophets, because God has passed against her the sentence she passed against you.
21 Then a strong angel picked up a rock like a huge millstone and hurled it into the sea, with these words: “Babylon the great city will be thrown down like that with a splash, and will never be seen again! 22 Never again will people hear the sound of harps, musicians, flute players and trumpeters in you. Never again will there be any skilled workmen plying their trade in you. Never again will people hear the sound of the mill in you. 23 Never again will anyone see the light of a lamp in you. Never again will anyone hear the voice of bridegroom and bride in you. Your merchants were the mighty ones of the earth; all the nations were deceived by your magic.”
24 In her has been found the blood of prophets and God’s holy ones, and all those who have been slaughtered on the earth.

Lament Over Fallen Babylon
18 After this I saw another angel(A) coming down from heaven.(B) He had great authority, and the earth was illuminated by his splendor.(C) 2 With a mighty voice he shouted:
“‘Fallen! Fallen is Babylon the Great!’[a](D)
She has become a dwelling for demons
and a haunt for every impure spirit,(E)
a haunt for every unclean bird,
a haunt for every unclean and detestable animal.(F)
3 For all the nations have drunk
the maddening wine of her adulteries.(G)
The kings of the earth committed adultery with her,(H)
and the merchants of the earth grew rich(I) from her excessive luxuries.”(J)
Warning to Escape Babylon’s Judgment
4 Then I heard another voice from heaven say:
“‘Come out of her, my people,’[b](K)
so that you will not share in her sins,
so that you will not receive any of her plagues;(L)
5 for her sins are piled up to heaven,(M)
and God has remembered(N) her crimes.
6 Give back to her as she has given;
pay her back(O) double(P) for what she has done.
Pour her a double portion from her own cup.(Q)
7 Give her as much torment and grief
as the glory and luxury she gave herself.(R)
In her heart she boasts,
‘I sit enthroned as queen.
I am not a widow;[c]
I will never mourn.’(S)
8 Therefore in one day(T) her plagues will overtake her:
death, mourning and famine.
She will be consumed by fire,(U)
for mighty is the Lord God who judges her.
Threefold Woe Over Babylon’s Fall
9 “When the kings of the earth who committed adultery with her(V) and shared her luxury(W) see the smoke of her burning,(X) they will weep and mourn over her.(Y) 10 Terrified at her torment, they will stand far off(Z) and cry:
11 “The merchants(AC) of the earth will weep and mourn(AD) over her because no one buys their cargoes anymore(AE)— 12 cargoes of gold, silver, precious stones and pearls; fine linen, purple, silk and scarlet cloth; every sort of citron wood, and articles of every kind made of ivory, costly wood, bronze, iron and marble;(AF) 13 cargoes of cinnamon and spice, of incense, myrrh and frankincense, of wine and olive oil, of fine flour and wheat; cattle and sheep; horses and carriages; and human beings sold as slaves.(AG)
14 “They will say, ‘The fruit you longed for is gone from you. All your luxury and splendor have vanished, never to be recovered.’ 15 The merchants who sold these things and gained their wealth from her(AH) will stand far off,(AI) terrified at her torment. They will weep and mourn(AJ) 16 and cry out:
“‘Woe! Woe to you, great city,(AK)
dressed in fine linen, purple and scarlet,
and glittering with gold, precious stones and pearls!(AL)
17 In one hour(AM) such great wealth has been brought to ruin!’(AN)
“Every sea captain, and all who travel by ship, the sailors, and all who earn their living from the sea,(AO) will stand far off.(AP) 18 When they see the smoke of her burning,(AQ) they will exclaim, ‘Was there ever a city like this great city(AR)?’(AS) 19 They will throw dust on their heads,(AT) and with weeping and mourning(AU) cry out:
“‘Woe! Woe to you, great city,(AV)
where all who had ships on the sea
became rich through her wealth!
In one hour she has been brought to ruin!’(AW)
20 “Rejoice over her, you heavens!(AX)
Rejoice, you people of God!
Rejoice, apostles and prophets!
For God has judged her
with the judgment she imposed on you.”(AY)
The Finality of Babylon’s Doom
21 Then a mighty angel(AZ) picked up a boulder the size of a large millstone and threw it into the sea,(BA) and said:
“With such violence
the great city(BB) of Babylon will be thrown down,
never to be found again.
22 The music of harpists and musicians, pipers and trumpeters,
will never be heard in you again.(BC)
No worker of any trade
will ever be found in you again.
The sound of a millstone
will never be heard in you again.(BD)
23 The light of a lamp
will never shine in you again.
The voice of bridegroom and bride
will never be heard in you again.(BE)
Your merchants were the world’s important people.(BF)
By your magic spell(BG) all the nations were led astray.
24 In her was found the blood of prophets and of God’s holy people,(BH)
of all who have been slaughtered on the earth.”(BI)
