8 Когда наступил седьмой месяц и израильтяне уже поселились в своих городах, весь народ, как один человек, собрался на площади перед Водными воротами. Они сказали книжнику Ездре принести книгу Закона Моисея[a], которую дал Израилю Господь.
2 И в первый день седьмого месяца[b] священник Ездра принес Закон на собрание, где присутствовали мужчины, и женщины, и все, кто способен понимать. 3 Он читал его вслух с рассвета до полудня на площади, что перед Водными воротами, перед мужчинами, женщинами и прочими, кто мог понимать. И весь народ внимательно слушал книгу Закона.
4 Книжник Ездра стоял на высоком деревянном помосте, построенном для этого случая, а рядом, справа от него стояли Маттифия, Шема, Анаия, Урия, Хелкия и Маасея, а слева от него – Педая, Мисаил, Малхия, Хашум, Хашбаддана, Захария и Мешуллам.

8 Se reunió todo el pueblo como un solo hombre en la plaza que estaba delante de la puerta de las Aguas(A), y pidieron[a] al escriba Esdras(B) que trajera el libro de la ley de Moisés que el Señor había dado[b] a Israel(C). 2 Entonces el sacerdote Esdras trajo la ley(D) delante de la asamblea de hombres y mujeres y de todos los que podían entender lo que oían. Era el primer día del mes séptimo(E). 3 Y leyó en el libro[c] frente a la plaza que estaba delante de la puerta de las Aguas(F), desde el amanecer[d] hasta el mediodía, en presencia de hombres y mujeres y de los que podían entender; y los oídos de todo el pueblo estaban atentos al libro de la ley. 4 El escriba Esdras estaba sobre un estrado de madera que habían hecho para esta ocasión. Junto a él, a su derecha, estaban Matatías, Sema, Anías, Urías, Hilcías y Maasías; y a su izquierda, Pedaías, Misael, Malquías, Hasum, Hasbadana, Zacarías y Mesulam. 5 Y abrió Esdras el libro a la vista de todo el pueblo(G), pues él estaba más alto que todo el pueblo; y cuando lo abrió, todo el pueblo se puso en pie(H). 6 Entonces Esdras bendijo al Señor, el gran Dios. No os entristezcáis, porque la alegría del Señor es vuestra fortaleza. 11 Los levitas calmaron a todo el pueblo diciendo: Callad, porque el día es santo, no os entristezcáis. 12 Y todo el pueblo se fue a comer, a beber, a mandar porciones(P) y a celebrar una gran fiesta[g], porque comprendieron las palabras que les habían enseñado(Q).
13 Al segundo día los jefes de casas paternas de todo el pueblo, los sacerdotes y los levitas se reunieron junto al escriba Esdras para entender las palabras de la ley. 14 Y encontraron escrito en la ley que el Señor había mandado por medio[h] de Moisés que los hijos de Israel habitaran en tabernáculos[i] durante la fiesta del mes séptimo(R). 15 Y ellos proclamaron y circularon[j] pregón(S) en todas sus ciudades y en Jerusalén(T), diciendo: Salid al monte y traed ramas de olivo, ramas de olivo silvestre[k], ramas de mirto, ramas de palmera y ramas de otros árboles frondosos, para hacer tabernáculos, como está escrito(U). 16 El pueblo salió y las trajeron e hicieron tabernáculos para sí, cada uno en su terrado(V), en sus patios, en los patios de la casa de Dios, en la plaza de la puerta de las Aguas(W) y en la plaza de la puerta de Efraín(X). 17 Toda la asamblea de los que habían regresado de la cautividad hicieron tabernáculos y habitaron en ellos[l]. 8 1 all the people came together as one in the square before the Water Gate.(A) They told Ezra the teacher of the Law to bring out the Book of the Law of Moses,(B) which the Lord had commanded for Israel.
2 So on the first day of the seventh month(C) Ezra the priest brought the Law(D) before the assembly, which was made up of men and women and all who were able to understand. 3 He read it aloud from daybreak till noon as he faced the square before the Water Gate(E) in the presence of the men, women and others who could understand. And all the people listened attentively to the Book of the Law.
4 Ezra the teacher of the Law stood on a high wooden platform(F) built for the occasion. Beside him on his right stood Mattithiah, Shema, Anaiah, Uriah, Hilkiah and Maaseiah; and on his left were Pedaiah, Mishael, Malkijah, Hashum, Hashbaddanah, Zechariah and Meshullam.
5 Ezra opened the book. All the people could see him because he was standing(G) above them; and as he opened it, the people all stood up. 6 Ezra praised the Lord, the great God; and all the people lifted their hands(H) and responded, “Amen! Amen!” Then they bowed down and worshiped the Lord with their faces to the ground.
7 The Levites(I)—Jeshua, Bani, Sherebiah, Jamin, Akkub, Shabbethai, Hodiah, Maaseiah, Kelita, Azariah, Jozabad, Hanan and Pelaiah—instructed(J) the people in the Law while the people were standing there. 8 They read from the Book of the Law of God, making it clear[a] and giving the meaning so that the people understood what was being read.
9 Then Nehemiah the governor, Ezra the priest and teacher of the Law, and the Levites(K) who were instructing the people said to them all, “This day is holy to the Lord your God. Do not mourn or weep.”(L) For all the people had been weeping as they listened to the words of the Law.
10 Nehemiah said, “Go and enjoy choice food and sweet drinks, and send some to those who have nothing(M) prepared. This day is holy to our Lord. Do not grieve, for the joy(N) of the Lord is your strength.”
11 The Levites calmed all the people, saying, “Be still, for this is a holy day. Do not grieve.”
12 Then all the people went away to eat and drink, to send portions of food and to celebrate with great joy,(O) because they now understood the words that had been made known to them.
13 On the second day of the month, the heads of all the families, along with the priests and the Levites, gathered around Ezra the teacher to give attention to the words of the Law. 14 They found written in the Law, which the Lord had commanded through Moses, that the Israelites were to live in temporary shelters(P) during the festival of the seventh month 15 and that they should proclaim this word and spread it throughout their towns and in Jerusalem: “Go out into the hill country and bring back branches from olive and wild olive trees, and from myrtles, palms and shade trees, to make temporary shelters”—as it is written.[b]
16 So the people went out and brought back branches and built themselves temporary shelters on their own roofs, in their courtyards, in the courts of the house of God and in the square by the Water Gate(Q) and the one by the Gate of Ephraim.(R) 17 The whole company that had returned from exile built temporary shelters and lived in them.(S) From the days of Joshua son of Nun until that day, the Israelites had not celebrated(T) it like this. And their joy was very great.
18 Day after day, from the first day to the last, Ezra read(U) from the Book of the Law(V) of God. They celebrated the festival for seven days, and on the eighth day, in accordance with the regulation,(W) there was an assembly.(X)

2 And Ezra the priest brought the law before the congregation both of men and women, and all that could hear with understanding, upon the first day of the seventh month.
3 And he read therein before the street that was before the water gate from the morning until midday, before the men and the women, and those that could understand; and the ears of all the people were attentive unto the book of the law.
4 And Ezra the scribe stood upon a pulpit of wood, which they had made for the purpose; and beside him stood Mattithiah, and Shema, and Anaiah, and Urijah, and Hilkiah, and Maaseiah, on his right hand; and on his left hand, Pedaiah, and Mishael, and Malchiah, and Hashum, and Hashbadana, Zechariah, and Meshullam.
5 And Ezra opened the book in the sight of all the people; (for he was above all the people;) and when he opened it, all the people stood up:
6 And Ezra blessed the Lord, the great God. And all the people answered, Amen, Amen, with lifting up their hands: and they bowed their heads, and worshipped the Lord with their faces to the ground.
7 Also Jeshua, and Bani, and Sherebiah, Jamin, Akkub, Shabbethai, Hodijah, Maaseiah, Kelita, Azariah, Jozabad, Hanan, Pelaiah, and the Levites, caused the people to understand the law: and the people stood in their place.
8 So they read in the book in the law of God distinctly, and gave the sense, and caused them to understand the reading.
9 And Nehemiah, which is the Tirshatha, and Ezra the priest the scribe, and the Levites that taught the people, said unto all the people, This day is holy unto the Lord your God; mourn not, nor weep. For all the people wept, when they heard the words of the law.
10 Then he said unto them, Go your way, eat the fat, and drink the sweet, and send portions unto them for whom nothing is prepared: for this day is holy unto our Lord: neither be ye sorry; for the joy of the Lord is your strength.
11 So the Levites stilled all the people, saying, Hold your peace, for the day is holy; neither be ye grieved.
12 And all the people went their way to eat, and to drink, and to send portions, and to make great mirth, because they had understood the words that were declared unto them.
13 And on the second day were gathered together the chief of the fathers of all the people, the priests, and the Levites, unto Ezra the scribe, even to understand the words of the law.
14 And they found written in the law which the Lord had commanded by Moses, that the children of Israel should dwell in booths in the feast of the seventh month:
15 And that they should publish and proclaim in all their cities, and in Jerusalem, saying, Go forth unto the mount, and fetch olive branches, and pine branches, and myrtle branches, and palm branches, and branches of thick trees, to make booths, as it is written.
16 So the people went forth, and brought them, and made themselves booths, every one upon the roof of his house, and in their courts, and in the courts of the house of God, and in the street of the water gate, and in the street of the gate of Ephraim.
17 And all the congregation of them that were come again out of the captivity made booths, and sat under the booths: for since the days of Jeshua the son of Nun unto that day had not the children of Israel done so. And there was very great gladness.
18 Also day by day, from the first day unto the last day, he read in the book of the law of God. And they kept the feast seven days; and on the eighth day was a solemn assembly, according unto the manner.
