4 А Санавалат, когато чу, че ние сме градили стената, разгневи се, много възнегодува, и присмя се на юдеите.
2 И говори пред братята си и пред самарийската войска, казвайки: Що правят тия окаяни юдеи? ще се закрепят ли? ще жертвуват ли? ще свършат ли в един ден? ще съживят ли камъните от купищата пръст, като са изгорели?
3 А амонецът Товия, който бе при него, рече: Даже това що градят, лисица ако се покачи <по него>, ще събори каменната им стена.
4 Чуй, Боже наш, защото сме презрени, обърни укора им върху собствените им глави, и предай ги на разграбване в земя гдето ще са пленници.
5 Не покривай беззаконието им, и грехът им да се не изличи пред Тебе; защото Те разгневиха пред градящите.
6 Така съградихме стената; и стената се свърза цяла до половината <от височината> си; защото людете имаха присърце работата.
7 Но когато Санавалат, Товия, арабите, амонците и азотците чуха, че поправянето на ерусалимските стени напредвало, и че проломите почнали да се затварят, разгневиха се много;
8 и всичките заедно се сговориха да дойдат и да воюват против Ерусалим и да му напакостят.
9 А ние се помолихме на своя Бог, и поставихме стражи <да пазят> против тях денем и нощем, <понеже се бояхме> от тях.
10 Но Юда рече: Силата на бременосците вече ослабна, а пръстта е много; ние не можем да градим стената.
11 А неприятелите ни рекоха: Няма да усетят, нито да видят докле дойдем всред тях, та ги избием и спрем работата.
12 И като дойдоха юдеите, които живееха при тях, рекоха ни десет пъти: Към която страна и да се обърнете, от там ще дойдат върху нас.
13 Затова поставих зад по-ниските места в стената, зад по-изложените места - поставих людете по семействата им с мечовете им, с копията им и с лъковете им.
14 И като разгледах, станах та рекох на благородните, на по-първите човеци и на другите люде: Не се бойте от тях; помнете великия и страшния Господ, и бийте се за братята си, за синовете си и дъщерите си, за жените си и за домовете си.
15 А когато неприятелите ни чуха, че <намерението им> било известно нам, и че Бог осуетил проекта им, ние всинца се върнахме на стената, всеки на работата си.
16 И от това време нататък, половината от слугуващите ми бяха на работата, а половината от тях държаха копията, щитчетата, лъковете и броните; и началниците насърчаваха {Еврейски: Бяха зад.} целия Юдов дом.
17 Всеки един от ония, които градяха стената, и които носеха товарите, и които товареха, работеше работата с едната си ръка, а с другата държеше оръжието;
18 и всеки от зидарите имаше меча си опасан на кръста си и така градеше. А тоя, който свиреше с тръбата беше до мене.
19 И рекох на благородните, на по-първите човеци и на другите люде: Работата е по-голяма и обширна, а ние сме пръснати по стената далеч един от други;

4 參巴拉聽說我們正在重建城牆，非常憤怒，就嘲笑猶太人， 2 當著他的同僚和撒瑪利亞軍兵的面說：「這群弱小的猶太人在做什麼呢？要重建城牆嗎？要獻祭嗎？要在一日之間建好嗎？要用廢墟中燒過的石頭來建造嗎？」

4 我禱告說：「我們的上帝啊，求你垂聽，因為我們正在被人恥笑。求你使他們對我們的凌辱歸到他們自己頭上，使他們被擄到外邦。 5 不要遮掩他們的惡行，也不要從你面前塗抹他們的罪惡，因為他們在這些建造的人面前惹你發怒。」
6 眾人全心做工，把整個城牆連接起來，高達原來的一半。

4 But it came to pass, that when Sanballat heard that we builded the wall, he was wroth, and took great indignation, and mocked the Jews.
2 And he spake before his brethren and the army of Samaria, and said, What do these feeble Jews? will they fortify themselves? will they sacrifice? will they make an end in a day? will they revive the stones out of the heaps of the rubbish which are burned?
3 Now Tobiah the Ammonite was by him, and he said, Even that which they build, if a fox go up, he shall even break down their stone wall.
4 Hear, O our God; for we are despised: and turn their reproach upon their own head, and give them for a prey in the land of captivity:
5 And cover not their iniquity, and let not their sin be blotted out from before thee: for they have provoked thee to anger before the builders.
6 So built we the wall; and all the wall was joined together unto the half thereof: for the people had a mind to work.
7 But it came to pass, that when Sanballat, and Tobiah, and the Arabians, and the Ammonites, and the Ashdodites, heard that the walls of Jerusalem were made up, and that the breaches began to be stopped, then they were very wroth,
8 And conspired all of them together to come and to fight against Jerusalem, and to hinder it.
9 Nevertheless we made our prayer unto our God, and set a watch against them day and night, because of them.
10 And Judah said, The strength of the bearers of burdens is decayed, and there is much rubbish; so that we are not able to build the wall.
11 And our adversaries said, They shall not know, neither see, till we come in the midst among them, and slay them, and cause the work to cease.
12 And it came to pass, that when the Jews which dwelt by them came, they said unto us ten times, From all places whence ye shall return unto us they will be upon you.
13 Therefore set I in the lower places behind the wall, and on the higher places, I even set the people after their families with their swords, their spears, and their bows.
14 And I looked, and rose up, and said unto the nobles, and to the rulers, and to the rest of the people, Be not ye afraid of them: remember the Lord, which is great and terrible, and fight for your brethren, your sons, and your daughters, your wives, and your houses.
15 And it came to pass, when our enemies heard that it was known unto us, and God had brought their counsel to nought, that we returned all of us to the wall, every one unto his work.
16 And it came to pass from that time forth, that the half of my servants wrought in the work, and the other half of them held both the spears, the shields, and the bows, and the habergeons; and the rulers were behind all the house of Judah.
17 They which builded on the wall, and they that bare burdens, with those that laded, every one with one of his hands wrought in the work, and with the other hand held a weapon.
18 For the builders, every one had his sword girded by his side, and so builded. And he that sounded the trumpet was by me.
19 And I said unto the nobles, and to the rulers, and to the rest of the people, The work is great and large, and we are separated upon the wall, one far from another.
20 In what place therefore ye hear the sound of the trumpet, resort ye thither unto us: our God shall fight for us.
21 So we laboured in the work: and half of them held the spears from the rising of the morning till the stars appeared.
22 Likewise at the same time said I unto the people, Let every one with his servant lodge within Jerusalem, that in the night they may be a guard to us, and labour on the day.
23 So neither I, nor my brethren, nor my servants, nor the men of the guard which followed me, none of us put off our clothes, saving that every one put them off for washing.

Les Judéens se préparent à se défendre
4 Lorsque Sanballat, Tobiya, les Arabes, les Ammonites et les Ashdodiens apprirent que la restauration des murailles de Jérusalem progressait et que les brèches commençaient à être obturées, ils se mirent très en colère. 2 Ils se liguèrent tous ensemble pour aller attaquer Jérusalem et y semer le désordre. 3 Alors nous avons prié notre Dieu et nous avons posté des gens pour monter la garde, de jour et de nuit, pour nous défendre contre eux. 4 Cependant, déjà le peuple de Juda murmurait : Ceux qui portent les fardeaux sont à bout de forces et les tas de décombres restent énormes. Jamais nous n’arriverons à rebâtir cette muraille !
5 Quant à nos adversaires, ils disaient : Ils ne sauront rien et ne verront rien jusqu’au moment où nous surgirons au milieu d’eux pour les massacrer et mettre fin à ce travail.
6 Les Juifs qui habitaient parmi eux vinrent dix fois nous avertir de ce qu’ils préparaient : De tous les lieux où vous vous tournerez, disaient-ils, ils viendront contre nous.
7 C’est pourquoi je mis des gens en place en contrebas derrière la muraille, aux endroits découverts ; je les postai groupés par familles et armés d’épées, de lances et d’arcs. 8 Après avoir tout inspecté, je m’adressai aux notables, aux chefs et au reste du peuple : N’ayez pas peur d’eux ! Pensez au Seigneur qui est grand et redoutable, et combattez pour vos frères, vos fils et vos filles, vos femmes et vos maisons !
9 Lorsque nos ennemis apprirent que nous étions informés et que Dieu avait ainsi déjoué leur projet, nous sommes tous retournés à la muraille, chacun à son travail. 10 Mais à partir de ce jour, la moitié des hommes seulement faisaient le travail et ceux de l’autre moitié, vêtus de cuirasses, étaient armés des lances, des boucliers et des arcs. Et les chefs se tenaient derrière tous les gens de Juda. 11 Ceux qui étaient occupés à rebâtir la muraille et ceux qui portaient ou chargeaient les fardeaux travaillaient d’une main et tenaient une arme de l’autre. 12 Chacun des bâtisseurs avait son épée attachée à sa hanche. C’est ainsi qu’ils bâtissaient. Un homme se tenait à mes côtés prêt à sonner du cor. 13 Je dis alors aux notables, aux chefs et au reste du peuple : Le travail est considérable et s’étend sur une grande distance, nous sommes dispersés loin les uns des autres le long de la muraille. 14 Rassemblez-vous autour de nous, à l’endroit où vous entendrez le son du cor, et notre Dieu combattra pour nous.
15 C’est ainsi que, chaque jour, nous poursuivions notre entreprise, la moitié d’entre nous tenant la lance à la main depuis l’aurore jusqu’à l’apparition des étoiles. 16 Durant cette période, je dis encore au peuple : Que chacun passe la nuit dans Jérusalem avec son subalterne[a]. Ainsi, nous pourrons monter la garde pendant la nuit et poursuivre le travail pendant le jour.
17 Ni moi, ni mes proches, ni mes collaborateurs, ni les gardes de mon escorte, nous ne quittions nos vêtements, chacun gardait ses armes à portée de main[b].
