Данило одведен у Вавилон
1 Треће године владавине Јехојакима, цара Јуде, Навуходоносор, цар Вавилона, дође до Јерусалима и опседе га. 2 Господ му предаде у руке Јехојакима, цара Јуде, и део предметâ из Божијег дома, које Навуходоносор однесе у храм свога бога у земљи Шинар и стави их у ризницу свога бога.
3 Затим цар Навуходоносор нареди главном евнуху Ашпеназу да из царске породице и виших сталежа доведе неколико Израелаца, 4 младићâ без мане, лепих, способних да уче, образованих, паметних и подобних да служе у царевој палати, и да их научи језику и књижевности Халдејаца. 5 Цар сваком од њих одреди дневно следовање хране и вина са своје трпезе. Требало је да се обучавају три године, а потом да уђу у цареву службу. 6 Међу њима су били и Јудеји Данило, Ананија, Мишаел и Азарја, 7 којима главни евнух даде нова имена: Данила назва Валтасар, Ананију Шадрах, Мишаела Мешах, а Азарју Аведнего.
8 Али Данило чврсто одлучи да се не укаља царевом храном и вином, па замоли евнуха да му омогући да се не укаља на тај начин. 9 Бог даде Данилу да евнух буде милостив и благонаклон према њему.
10 Евнух рече Данилу: »Бојим се свога господара, цара, који ти је одредио храну и пиће, јер ако види да си мршавији од осталих младића твојих година, због тебе ће ми одрубити главу.«
11 Тада Данило рече чувару кога је њему, Ананији, Мишаелу и Азарји одредио главни евнух: 12 »Молим те, покушај ово с нама, својим слугама: десет дана нам дај да једемо поврће и пијемо воду, 13 а онда наш изглед упореди са изгледом осталих младића, оних који једу цареву храну, па уради с нама, твојим слугама, онако како мислиш да треба.«
14 И чувар се сложи да тако покушају десет дана. 15 После десет дана, они су изгледали здравији и ухрањенији од свих младића који су јели цареву храну. 16 Стога чувар уклони бирану храну и вино које је требало да пију и даде им поврће.
17 Бог овој четворици младића даде знање и разумевање свих књига и мудрости. А Данило је умео да тумачи и виђења и снове.
18 Када је прошло време које је цар одредио, главни евнух изведе младиће пред Навуходоносора. 19 Цар поразговара са сваким од њих и виде да ниједан није раван Данилу, Ананији, Мишаелу и Азарји. Тако они ступише у цареву службу. 20 Из које год их је области мудрости и умности цар испитивао, њихово знање било је десет пута веће од знања чаробњакâ и гаталаца из целог његовог царства.
21 Данило остаде у царевој сужби све до прве године владавине цара Кира.

1 In the third year of the reign of Jehoiakim king of Judah came Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon unto Jerusalem, and besieged it.
2 And the Lord gave Jehoiakim king of Judah into his hand, with part of the vessels of the house of God: which he carried into the land of Shinar to the house of his god; and he brought the vessels into the treasure house of his god.
3 And the king spake unto Ashpenaz the master of his eunuchs, that he should bring certain of the children of Israel, and of the king's seed, and of the princes;
4 Children in whom was no blemish, but well favoured, and skilful in all wisdom, and cunning in knowledge, and understanding science, and such as had ability in them to stand in the king's palace, and whom they might teach the learning and the tongue of the Chaldeans.
5 And the king appointed them a daily provision of the king's meat, and of the wine which he drank: so nourishing them three years, that at the end thereof they might stand before the king.
6 Now among these were of the children of Judah, Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah:
7 Unto whom the prince of the eunuchs gave names: for he gave unto Daniel the name of Belteshazzar; and to Hananiah, of Shadrach; and to Mishael, of Meshach; and to Azariah, of Abednego.
8 But Daniel purposed in his heart that he would not defile himself with the portion of the king's meat, nor with the wine which he drank: therefore he requested of the prince of the eunuchs that he might not defile himself.
9 Now God had brought Daniel into favour and tender love with the prince of the eunuchs.
10 And the prince of the eunuchs said unto Daniel, I fear my lord the king, who hath appointed your meat and your drink: for why should he see your faces worse liking than the children which are of your sort? then shall ye make me endanger my head to the king.
11 Then said Daniel to Melzar, whom the prince of the eunuchs had set over Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah,
12 Prove thy servants, I beseech thee, ten days; and let them give us pulse to eat, and water to drink.
13 Then let our countenances be looked upon before thee, and the countenance of the children that eat of the portion of the king's meat: and as thou seest, deal with thy servants.
14 So he consented to them in this matter, and proved them ten days.
15 And at the end of ten days their countenances appeared fairer and fatter in flesh than all the children which did eat the portion of the king's meat.
16 Thus Melzar took away the portion of their meat, and the wine that they should drink; and gave them pulse.
17 As for these four children, God gave them knowledge and skill in all learning and wisdom: and Daniel had understanding in all visions and dreams.
18 Now at the end of the days that the king had said he should bring them in, then the prince of the eunuchs brought them in before Nebuchadnezzar.
19 And the king communed with them; and among them all was found none like Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah: therefore stood they before the king.
20 And in all matters of wisdom and understanding, that the king enquired of them, he found them ten times better than all the magicians and astrologers that were in all his realm.
21 And Daniel continued even unto the first year of king Cyrus.

Daniel en Babilonia
1 En el año tercero del reinado del rey Joacim de Judá, el rey Nabucodonosor de Babilonia vino a Jerusalén y la sitió. 2 El Señor permitió que Joacim cayera en manos de Nabucodonosor. Junto con él, cayeron en sus manos algunos de los utensilios del Templo de Dios, los cuales Nabucodonosor se llevó a Sinar[a] y puso en el tesoro del templo de sus dioses.
3 Además, el rey ordenó a Aspenaz, jefe de los oficiales[b] de su corte, que llevara a su presencia a algunos de los israelitas pertenecientes a la familia real y a la nobleza. 4 Debían ser jóvenes apuestos y sin ningún defecto físico, que tuvieran aptitudes para aprender de todo y que actuaran con sensatez; jóvenes sabios y aptos para el servicio en el palacio real, a los cuales Aspenaz debía enseñarles la lengua y la literatura de los babilonios.[c] 5 El rey les asignó raciones diarias de la comida y del vino que se servía en la mesa real. Su preparación habría de durar tres años, después de lo cual entrarían al servicio del rey.
6 Entre estos jóvenes se encontraban Daniel, Ananías, Misael y Azarías, que eran de Judá, 7 y a los cuales el oficial en jefe les cambió el nombre: a Daniel lo llamó Beltsasar; a Ananías, Sadrac; a Misael, Mesac; y a Azarías, Abednego.
8 Pero Daniel decidió no contaminarse con la comida y el vino del rey, así que pidió permiso al oficial en jefe para no contaminarse. 9 Y Dios había hecho que se ganara el afecto y la simpatía del oficial en jefe. 10 A pesar de eso dijo a Daniel: «Tengo miedo de mi señor el rey, pues fue él quien les asignó la comida y el vino. ¿Qué pasa si los ve más delgados y demacrados que los otros jóvenes de sus edades? Entonces el rey por culpa de ustedes me cortará la cabeza».
11 Entonces Daniel habló con el guardia que el oficial en jefe había designado sobre Daniel, Ananías, Misael y Azarías: 12 «Por favor, haz con tus siervos una prueba de diez días. Danos de comer solo verduras y de beber solo agua. 13 Pasado ese tiempo, compara nuestro semblante con el de los jóvenes que se alimentan con la comida real, y procede a tratarnos de acuerdo con lo que veas en nosotros».
14 El guardia aceptó la propuesta y los sometió a una prueba de diez días. 15 Al cumplirse el plazo, estos jóvenes se veían más sanos y mejor alimentados que cualquiera de los que participaban de la comida real. 16 Así que el guardia les retiró la comida y el vino del rey, en su lugar siguió alimentándolos con verduras.
17 A estos cuatro jóvenes Dios los dotó de sabiduría e inteligencia para entender toda clase de literatura y ciencia. Además, Daniel podía entender toda visión y todo sueño.
18 Cumplido el plazo fijado por el rey Nabucodonosor, y conforme a sus instrucciones, el oficial en jefe los llevó ante su presencia. 19 Luego de hablar el rey con Daniel, Ananías, Misael y Azarías, no encontró a nadie que los igualara, de modo que los cuatro entraron a su servicio. 20 El rey los interrogó y, en todos los temas que requerían de sabiduría y discernimiento, los halló diez veces más inteligentes que todos los magos y hechiceros de su reino.
21 Fue así como Daniel se quedó en Babilonia hasta el primer año del rey Ciro.
