The Day of the Lord
2 Blow (A)the [a]trumpet in Zion,
And (B)sound an alarm in My holy mountain!
Let all the inhabitants of the land tremble;
For (C)the day of the Lord is coming,
For it is at hand:
2 (D)A day of darkness and gloominess,
A day of clouds and thick darkness,
Like the morning clouds spread over the mountains.
(E)A people come, great and strong,
(F)The like of whom has never been;
Nor will there ever be any such after them,
Even for many successive generations.
3 A fire devours before them,
And behind them a flame burns;
The land is like (G)the Garden of Eden before them,
(H)And behind them a desolate wilderness;
Surely nothing shall escape them.
4 (I)Their appearance is like the appearance of horses;
And like [b]swift steeds, so they run.
5 (J)With a noise like chariots
Over mountaintops they leap,
Like the noise of a flaming fire that devours the stubble,
Like a strong people set in battle array.
6 Before them the people writhe in pain;
(K)All faces [c]are drained of color.
7 They run like mighty men,
They climb the wall like men of war;
Every one marches in formation,
And they do not break (L)ranks.
8 They do not push one another;
Every one marches in his own [d]column.
Though they lunge between the weapons,
They are not [e]cut down.
9 They run to and fro in the city,
They run on the wall;
They climb into the houses,
They (M)enter at the windows (N)like a thief.
10 (O)The earth quakes before them,
The heavens tremble;
(P)The sun and moon grow dark,
And the stars diminish their brightness.
11 (Q)The Lord gives voice before His army,
For His camp is very great;
(R)For strong is the One who executes His word.
For the (S)day of the Lord is great and very terrible;
(T)Who can endure it?
A Call to Repentance
12 “Now, therefore,” says the Lord,
(U)“Turn to Me with all your heart,
With fasting, with weeping, and with mourning.”
13 So (V)rend your heart, and not (W)your garments;
Return to the Lord your God,
For He is (X)gracious and merciful,
Slow to anger, and of great kindness;
And He relents from doing harm.
14 (Y)Who knows if He will turn and relent,
And leave (Z)a blessing behind Him—
(AA)A grain offering and a drink offering
For the Lord your God?
15 (AB)Blow the [f]trumpet in Zion,
(AC)Consecrate a fast,
Call a sacred assembly;
16 Gather the people,
(AD)Sanctify the congregation,
Assemble the elders,
Gather the children and nursing babes;
(AE)Let the bridegroom go out from his chamber,
And the bride from her dressing room.
17 Let the priests, who minister to the Lord,
Weep (AF)between the porch and the altar;
Let them say, (AG)“Spare Your people, O Lord,
And do not give Your heritage to reproach,
That the nations should [g]rule over them.
(AH)Why should they say among the peoples,
‘Where is their God?’ ”
The Land Refreshed(AI)
18 Then the Lord will (AJ)be zealous for His land,
And pity His people.
19 The Lord will answer and say to His people,
“Behold, I will send you (AK)grain and new wine and oil,
And you will be satisfied by them;
I will no longer make you a reproach among the nations.
20 “But (AL)I will remove far from you (AM)the northern army,
And will drive him away into a barren and desolate land,
With his face toward the eastern sea
And his back (AN)toward the western sea;
His stench will come up,
And his foul odor will rise,
Because he has done [h]monstrous things.”
21 Fear not, O land;
Be glad and rejoice,
For the Lord has done [i]marvelous things!
22 Do not be afraid, you beasts of the field;
For (AO)the open pastures are springing up,
And the tree bears its fruit;
The fig tree and the vine yield their strength.
23 Be glad then, you children of Zion,
And (AP)rejoice in the Lord your God;
For He has given you the [j]former rain faithfully,
And He (AQ)will cause the rain to come down for you—
The former rain,
And the latter rain in the first month.
24 The threshing floors shall be full of wheat,
And the vats shall overflow with new wine and oil.
25 “So I will restore to you the years (AR)that the swarming [k]locust has eaten,
The crawling locust,
The consuming locust,
And the chewing locust,
My great army which I sent among you.
26 You shall (AS)eat in plenty and be satisfied,
And praise the name of the Lord your God,
Who has dealt wondrously with you;
And My people shall never be put to (AT)shame.
27 Then you shall know that I am (AU)in the midst of Israel:
(AV)I am the Lord your God
And there is no other.
My people shall never be put to shame.
God’s Spirit Poured Out
28 “And(AW) it shall come to pass afterward
That (AX)I will pour out My Spirit on all flesh;
(AY)Your sons and your (AZ)daughters shall prophesy,
Your old men shall dream dreams,
Your young men shall see visions.
29 And also on My (BA)menservants and on My maidservants
I will pour out My Spirit in those days.
30 “And (BB)I will show wonders in the heavens and in the earth:
Blood and fire and pillars of smoke.
31 (BC)The sun shall be turned into darkness,
And the moon into blood,
(BD)Before the coming of the great and awesome day of the Lord.
32 And it shall come to pass
That (BE)whoever calls on the name of the Lord
Shall be [l]saved.
For (BF)in Mount Zion and in Jerusalem there shall be [m]deliverance,
As the Lord has said,
Among (BG)the remnant whom the Lord calls.

2 ¡Tocad la trompeta en Sión,
dad la alarma en mi santo monte!
Tiemblen todos los que habitan el país,
porque viene el día del Señor;
está ya a las puertas:
2 día de oscuridad y de tinieblas,
de nubarrones y densa niebla.
Como el amanecer sobre los montes,
así avanza un pueblo fuerte y numeroso;
nunca antes hubo otro como él,
ni volverá a existir después
por muchas generaciones que pasen.
3 Su vanguardia es fuego consumidor,
llama abrasadora su retaguardia.
Antes de su paso, era el país un paraíso;
después, todo es estepa desolada:
nada se escapa ante él.
4 Similar a los caballos es su aspecto,
cabalgan como si fueran jinetes.
5 Retumban como carros de guerra,
saltan por las cimas de los montes;
son igual que el crepitar del fuego
cuando consume el rastrojo;
igual que un pueblo poderoso
dispuesto para el combate.
6 Ante él tiemblan los pueblos,
palidecen todos los semblantes.
7 Avanzan como valientes,
cual guerreros escalan la muralla;
cada uno marcha en su fila,
sin desviarse de su trayectoria;
8 ninguno estorba al compañero,
avanza cada cual por su camino;
aunque caigan flechas a su alrededor,
no rompen la formación.
9 Invaden la ciudad,
escalan la muralla;
asaltan las casas
irrumpiendo como ladrones
a través de las ventanas.
10 En su presencia tiembla la tierra,
los cielos se estremecen,
el sol y la luna se oscurecen
y dejan de brillar las estrellas.
11 El Señor alza la voz
al frente de su ejército;
son innumerables sus tropas
y fuerte el que ejecuta su palabra.
El día del Señor es grandioso y temible:
¿quién podrá resistirlo?
Llamada al arrepentimiento
12 Ahora, pues, —oráculo del Señor—
volveos hacia mí de todo corazón,
con ayuno, lágrimas y lamento.
13 Rasgad vuestro corazón
en lugar de vuestros vestidos;
volveos al Señor, vuestro Dios,
que es misericordioso y compasivo,
lento para airarse y lleno de amor,
siempre dispuesto a no hacer mal.
14 Quizá se decida a no hacer daño
y a sembrar bendiciones a su paso:
ofrendas y libaciones
para el Señor, vuestro Dios.
15 ¡Tocad la trompeta en Sión!
Decretad un ayuno,
convocad una asamblea;
16 congregad al pueblo,
santificad la asamblea,
reunid a los ancianos,
juntad a los niños,
incluso a los que aún maman;
salga de la alcoba el esposo
y la esposa de su lecho nupcial.
17 Lloren los sacerdotes
entre el atrio y el altar;
digan los servidores del Señor:
“Perdona, Señor, a tu pueblo;
no expongas tu heredad al oprobio
ni a la burla de los paganos.
Que no se diga entre los pueblos:
¿dónde está su Dios?”.
Respuesta del Señor
18 Lleno de amor por su tierra,
el Señor se compadeció de su pueblo
19 y le respondió diciendo:
Voy a enviaros trigo, vino y aceite
hasta que estéis saciados;
nunca más os expondré
al oprobio de los paganos.
20 Alejaré de vosotros
al enemigo del norte
haré que se disperse
por terrenos áridos y desolados:
su vanguardia hacia el mar Oriental,
hacia el Occidental su retaguardia;
despedirá hedor y pestilencia,
porque ha hecho cosas tremendas.
21 No temáis, campos de cultivo,
regocijaos y alegraos:
el Señor hará cosas grandiosas.
22 No temáis, bestias del campo;
reverdecerán los matorrales de la estepa,
los árboles producirán su fruto,
darán su riqueza la vid y la higuera.
23 También vosotros, habitantes de Sión,
regocijaos y alegraos
en el Señor, vuestro Dios,
pues os ha dado la lluvia oportuna en otoño
y derramará sobre vosotros como antaño
las lluvias de otoño y primavera.
24 Las eras se llenarán de trigo,
los lagares rebosarán de vino y aceite.
25 Os compensaré por aquellos años
en que todo lo arrasaron
la “recolectora”, la “lamedora”,
la “devoradora” y la “devastadora”,
aquel inmenso ejército
que envié contra vosotros.
26 Comeréis hasta quedar saciados
y alabaréis el nombre
del Señor, vuestro Dios,
que hizo portentos con vosotros.
Y nunca jamás mi pueblo
volverá a quedar cubierto de oprobio.
27 Tendréis que reconocer así
que estoy en medio de Israel
y que yo, y ningún otro,
soy el Señor, vuestro Dios.

The Day of the Lord
2 (A)Blow a trumpet in (B)Zion;
sound an alarm on (C)my holy mountain!
Let all the inhabitants of the land tremble,
for (D)the day of the Lord is coming; it is near,
2 (E)a day of darkness and gloom,
(F)a day of clouds and thick darkness!
Like blackness there is spread upon the mountains
(G)a great and powerful people;
(H)their like has never been before,
nor will be again after them
through the years of all generations.
3 (I)Fire devours before them,
and behind them a flame burns.
The land is like (J)the garden of Eden before them,
but (K)behind them a desolate wilderness,
and nothing escapes them.
4 (L)Their appearance is like the appearance of horses,
and like war horses they run.
5 (M)As with the rumbling of chariots,
they leap on the tops of the mountains,
like the crackling of (N)a flame of fire
devouring the stubble,
(O)like a powerful army
drawn up for battle.
6 Before them peoples are in anguish;
(P)all faces grow pale.
7 Like warriors they charge;
like soldiers they scale the wall.
They march each on his way;
they do not swerve from their paths.
8 They do not jostle one another;
(Q)each marches in his path;
they burst through the weapons
and are not halted.
9 (R)They leap upon the city,
they run upon the walls,
(S)they climb up into the houses,
(T)they enter through the windows (U)like a thief.
10 (V)The earth quakes before them;
the heavens tremble.
(W)The sun and the moon are darkened,
and the stars withdraw their shining.
11 (X)The Lord utters his voice
before (Y)his army,
for his camp is exceedingly great;
(Z)he who executes his word is powerful.
(AA)For the day of the Lord is (AB)great and very awesome;
(AC)who can endure it?
Return to the Lord
12 “Yet even now,” declares the Lord,
(AD)“return to me with all your heart,
(AE)with fasting, with weeping, and with mourning;
13 and (AF)rend your hearts and not (AG)your garments.”
Return to the Lord your God,
(AH)for he is gracious and merciful,
slow to anger, and abounding in steadfast love;
(AI)and he relents over disaster.
14 (AJ)Who knows whether he will not turn and relent,
and (AK)leave a blessing behind him,
(AL)a grain offering and a drink offering
for the Lord your God?
15 (AM)Blow the trumpet in Zion;
(AN)consecrate a fast;
call a solemn assembly;
16 gather the people.
(AO)Consecrate the congregation;
assemble the elders;
(AP)gather the children,
even nursing infants.
(AQ)Let the bridegroom leave his room,
and the bride her chamber.
17 (AR)Between the (AS)vestibule and the (AT)altar
(AU)let the priests, the ministers of the Lord, weep
and say, “Spare your people, O Lord,

The Lord Had Pity
18 (AW)Then the Lord became jealous for his land
(AX)and had pity on his people.
19 The Lord answered and said to his people,
“Behold, (AY)I am sending to you
grain, wine, and oil,
(AZ)and you will be satisfied;
and I will no more make you
a reproach among the nations.
20 “I will remove the northerner far from you,
and drive him into a parched and desolate land,
his vanguard[b] into (BA)the eastern sea,
and his rear guard[c] into (BB)the western sea;
(BC)the stench and foul smell of him will rise,
for he has done great things.
21 “Fear not, O land;
be glad and rejoice,
for (BD)the Lord has done great things!
22 Fear not, (BE)you beasts of the field,
for (BF)the pastures of the wilderness are green;
(BG)the tree bears its fruit;
the fig tree and (BH)vine give their full yield.
23 (BI)“Be glad, O children of Zion,
and (BJ)rejoice in the Lord your God,
for he has given (BK)the early rain for your vindication;
he has poured down for you abundant rain,
(BL)the early and (BM)the latter rain, as before.

The Lord Will Pour Out His Spirit
28 [e] (BZ)“And it shall come to pass afterward,
that (CA)I will pour out my Spirit on all flesh;
(CB)your sons and (CC)your daughters shall prophesy,
your old men shall dream dreams,
and your young men shall see visions.
29 (CD)Even on the male and female servants
in those days I will pour out my Spirit.
30 “And I will show (CE)wonders in the heavens and (CF)on the earth, blood and fire and columns of smoke. 31 (CG)The sun shall be turned to darkness, (CH)and the moon to blood, (CI)before the great and awesome day of the Lord comes. 32 And it shall come to pass that (CJ)everyone who calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved. (CK)For in Mount Zion and in Jerusalem there shall be those who escape, as the Lord has said, and among (CL)the survivors shall be those whom the Lord calls.
