16 Затем израильтяне ушли из Елима и на пятнадцатый день второго месяца[a] с того времени, как вышли из Египта, пришли в пустыню Син[b], между Елимом и Синаем. 2 В пустыне они стали снова жаловаться на Моисея и Аарона. 3 «Лучше было бы, если бы Господь просто убил нас в Египетской земле,—говорили они.—Там, по крайней мере, у нас было вдоволь еды, столько, сколько нам было нужно. Теперь же ты привёл нас в эту пустыню, и мы тут все умрём от голода».

4 Тогда Господь сказал Моисею: «Я сделаю так, что с неба вам станет падать хлеб, чтобы у вас была пища. Пусть люди каждый день выходят и собирают сколько нужно на день. 6 Моисей и Аарон сказали израильскому народу: «Сегодня вы увидите, насколько велика сила Господняя, узнаете, что именно Он вывел вас из Египта. 7 Вы жаловались на Господа, и Он услышал вас, и потому завтра утром вы увидите славу Господнюю. Вы беспрестанно жаловались против нас, так может теперь нам будет покой».

8 И ещё сказал Моисей: «Вы жаловались, и Господь услышал ваши жалобы, поэтому сегодня ночью Господь даст вам мясо, а утром вы получите столько хлеба, сколько вам нужно. Вы жаловались на меня и Аарона, так может теперь нам будет покой. Помните, что ваши жалобы не на нас, а на Господа».

9 И сказал Моисей Аарону: «Обратись ко всем людям народу Израиля и скажи им: „Предстаньте перед Господом, потому что Он услышал ваше недовольство”».

10 После того как весь народ Израиля собрался в одном месте, Аарон обратился к людям, и, когда он говорил, все обернулись и, посмотрев на пустыню, увидели славу Господнюю, явившуюся им в облаке.

11 Господь сказал Моисею: 12 «Я слышал жалобы израильского народа, так скажи людям: „Сегодня вечером вы будете есть мясо, а утром будете есть хлеб, сколько захотите, и тогда вы узнаете, что можете верить в Господа, Бога вашего”».

13 В тот вечер на стан налетели перепела, а к утру землю вокруг стана покрыла роса. 14 Когда же роса поднялась, под ней на земле осталось нечто подобное тонким хлопьям инея. 15 Увидев это, израильтяне стали спрашивать друг друга: «Что это такое?»[d], так как они не знали, что это было. Тогда Моисей сказал им: «Это—хлеб, который вам посылает Господь. 16 Господь повелевает, чтобы каждый набрал столько, сколько ему нужно; каждый из вас должен набрать по корзине[e] на каждого человека в семье».

17 Народ Израиля так и сделал: каждый набрал себе хлеба, одни больше, другие меньше. 18 Люди накормили всех, кто был у них в семье, и когда они мерили собранное, то всегда хватало на всех, лишнего же никогда не оставалось. Каждый набирал ровно столько, сколько нужно было ему и его семейству.

19 «Не оставляйте ничего до утра»,—сказал им Моисей. 20 Но люди не послушали его: некоторые оставили еду на следующий день, в ней завелись черви, и она стала смердеть. Это непослушание очень рассердило Моисея. 21 Каждое утро люди набирали хлеба, каждый столько, сколько мог съесть; к полудню[f] же еда таяла.

22 В пятницу люди набрали еды вдвое больше—по две корзины[g] на каждого. Тогда предводители народа пришли и рассказали об этом Моисею.

23 Моисей сказал им: «Так было угодно Богу, это случилось потому, что завтра суббота, особый день отдыха в честь Господа. Сегодня приготовьте столько еды, сколько надо, а то, что останется, сберегите до утра».

24 И люди сберегли всё, что осталось, до следующего дня, и оно не испортилось, и черви в еде не завелись.

25 В субботу Моисей сказал народу: «Сегодня суббота, особый день отдыха в честь Господа, поэтому пусть никто из вас не выходит в поле. Ешьте то, что собрали вчера. 26 Собирайте шесть дней, седьмой же день—день отдыха, поэтому этого особого хлеба на земле не будет».

27 Но некоторые всё-таки пошли собирать в субботу и ничего не нашли. 28 Тогда Господь сказал Моисею: «Долго ли ещё вы будете отказываться следовать Моим наказам и наставлениям? 29 Послушайте, Господь сделал для вас субботу днём отдыха и потому по пятницам будет посылать вам столько хлеба, сколько нужно на два дня. Поэтому в субботу каждый из вас должен сесть и отдыхать. Оставайтесь каждый у себя». 30 И народ отдыхал на седьмой день.

31 Люди стали называть эту особую еду манной[h]. Это были мелкие белые зёрна, подобные кориандровому семени, а по вкусу манна напоминала тонкие лепёшки с мёдом. 32 Моисей сказал: «Господь повелел: „Сохраните по восемь чашек[i] этой еды для ваших потомков, и тогда они увидят, чем Я кормил вас в пустыне, когда вывел вас из Египта”».

33 И сказал Моисей Аарону: «Возьми кувшин, насыпь туда восемь чашек[j] манны, чтобы поставить её перед Господом и сохранить для наших потомков». 34 Аарон сделал так, как Бог повелел Моисею: поставил кувшин с манной перед ларцом Соглашения. 35 Народ ел манну сорок лет, пока не пришёл в землю отдыха[k]; пока израильтяне не пришли к границе Ханаанской земли. 36 В одном же гоморе было около восьми чашек[l].

Bread from Heaven

16 They (A)set out from Elim, and all the congregation of the people of Israel came to the wilderness of Sin, which is between Elim and Sinai, on the fifteenth day of the second month after they had departed from the land of Egypt. 2 And the whole congregation of the people of Israel (B)grumbled against Moses and Aaron in the wilderness, 3 and the people of Israel said to them, (C)“Would that we had died by the hand of the Lord in the land of Egypt, (D)when we sat by the meat pots and ate bread to the full, for you have brought us out into this wilderness to kill this whole assembly with hunger.”

4 Then the Lord said to Moses, “Behold, I am about to rain (E)bread from heaven for you, and the people shall go out and gather a day's portion every day, that I may (F)test them, whether they will walk in my law or not. 5 On the sixth day, when they prepare what they bring in, (G)it will be twice as much as they gather daily.” 6 So Moses and Aaron said to all the people of Israel, (H)“At evening (I)you shall know that it was the Lord who brought you out of the land of Egypt, 7 and in the morning you shall see the (J)glory of the Lord, because he has heard your grumbling against the Lord. For (K)what are we, that you grumble against us?” 8 And Moses said, “When the Lord gives you in the evening meat to eat and in the morning bread to the full, because the Lord has heard your grumbling that you grumble against him—(L)what are we? Your grumbling is not (M)against us but against the Lord.”

9 Then Moses (N)said to Aaron, “Say to the whole congregation of the people of Israel, (O)‘Come near before the Lord, for he has heard your grumbling.’” 10 And as soon as Aaron spoke to the whole congregation of the people of Israel, they looked toward the wilderness, and behold, the (P)glory of the Lord appeared in the cloud. 11 And the Lord said to Moses, 12 “I (Q)have heard the grumbling of the people of Israel. Say to them, ‘At (R)twilight you shall eat meat, and (S)in the morning you shall be filled with bread. Then you shall know that I am the Lord your God.’”

13 In the evening (T)quail came up and covered the camp, and in the morning (U)dew lay around the camp. 14 And when the dew had gone up, there was on the face of the wilderness a fine, flake-like thing, fine as frost on the ground. 15 When the people of Israel saw it, they said to one another, (V)“What is it?”[a] For they (W)did not know what it was. And Moses said to them, (X)“It is the bread that the Lord has given you to eat. 16 This is what the Lord has commanded: ‘Gather of it, each one of you, as much as he can eat. You shall each take an (Y)omer,[b] according to the number of the persons that each of you has in his tent.’” 17 And the people of Israel did so. They gathered, some more, some less. 18 But when they measured it with an omer, (Z)whoever gathered much had nothing left over, and whoever gathered little had no lack. Each of them gathered as much as he could eat. 19 And Moses said to them, “Let no one leave any of it over till the morning.” 20 But they did not listen to Moses. Some left part of it till the morning, and (AA)it bred worms and stank. And Moses was angry with them. 21 Morning by morning they gathered it, each as much as he could eat; but when the sun grew hot, it melted.

22 On (AB)the sixth day they gathered twice as much bread, two omers each. And when all the leaders of the congregation came and told Moses, 23 he said to them, “This is what the Lord has commanded: ‘Tomorrow is a day of (AC)solemn rest, a holy Sabbath to the Lord; bake what you will bake and boil what you will boil, and all that is left over lay aside to be kept till the morning.’” 24 So they laid it aside till the morning, as Moses commanded them, and (AD)it did not stink, and there were no worms in it. 25 Moses said, “Eat it today, for (AE)today is a Sabbath to the Lord; today you will not find it in the field. 26 Six days you shall gather it, but on the seventh day, which is a Sabbath, there will be none.”

27 On the seventh day some of the people went out to gather, but they found none. 28 And the Lord said to Moses, (AF)“How long will you refuse to keep my commandments and my laws? 29 See! The Lord has given you the Sabbath; therefore on the sixth day he gives you bread for two days. Remain each of you in his place; let no one go out of his place on the seventh day.” 30 So the people (AG)rested on the seventh day.

31 Now the house of Israel called its name (AH)manna. It was (AI)like coriander seed, white, and the taste of it was like wafers made with honey. 32 Moses said, “This is what the Lord has commanded: ‘Let an omer of it be kept throughout your generations, so that they may see the bread with which I fed you in the wilderness, when I brought you out of the land of Egypt.’” 33 And Moses said to Aaron, “Take a (AJ)jar, and put an omer of manna in it, and place it before the Lord to be kept throughout your generations.” 34 As the Lord commanded Moses, so Aaron placed it before (AK)the testimony to be kept. 35 The people of Israel (AL)ate the manna forty years, till they came to a habitable land. They ate the manna till (AM)they came to the border of the land of Canaan. 36 (An omer is (AN)the tenth part of an ephah.)[c]

4 Entonces el Señor dijo a Moisés: He aquí, haré llover pan del cielo(F) para vosotros; y el pueblo saldrá y recogerá diariamente la porción de cada día, para ponerlos a prueba si andan o no en mi ley(G). 5 Y sucederá que en el sexto día, cuando preparen lo que traigan, la porción será el doble de lo que recogen diariamente(H). 6 Entonces Moisés y Aarón dijeron a todos los hijos de Israel: A la tarde sabréis[c] que el Señor os ha sacado de la tierra de Egipto(I); 7 y por la mañana veréis[d] la gloria del Señor(J), pues Él ha oído vuestras murmuraciones contra el Señor(K); ¿y qué somos nosotros para que murmuréis contra nosotros(L)? 8 Y Moisés dijo: Esto sucederá cuando el Señor os dé carne para comer por la tarde, y pan hasta saciaros por la mañana; porque el Señor ha oído vuestras murmuraciones[e] contra Él. Pues ¿qué somos nosotros? Vuestras murmuraciones no son contra nosotros, sino contra el Señor(M). 9 Y Moisés dijo a Aarón: Di a toda la congregación de los hijos de Israel: «Acercaos a la presencia del Señor, porque Él ha oído vuestras murmuraciones(N)». 10 Y sucedió que mientras Aarón hablaba a toda la congregación de los hijos de Israel, miraron[f] hacia el desierto y, he aquí, la gloria del Señor se apareció en la nube(O). 11 Y habló el Señor a Moisés, diciendo: 12 He oído las murmuraciones de los hijos de Israel. Háblales, diciendo: «Al caer la tarde[g] comeréis carne, y por la mañana os saciaréis de pan(P); y sabréis que yo soy el Señor vuestro Dios(Q)».

Las codornices y el maná

13 Y sucedió que por la tarde subieron las codornices y cubrieron el campamento(R), y por la mañana había una capa de rocío(S) alrededor del campamento. 14 Cuando la capa de rocío se evaporó[h], he aquí, sobre la superficie[i] del desierto había una cosa delgada, como copos[j], menuda, como la escarcha sobre la tierra(T). 15 Al verla, los hijos de Israel se dijeron unos a otros: ¿Qué es esto?[k], porque no sabían lo que era. Y Moisés les dijo: Es el pan que el Señor os da para comer(U). 16 Esto es lo que el Señor ha mandado: «Cada uno recoja de él lo que vaya a comer[l]; tomaréis un gomer[m] por cabeza, conforme al número de personas que cada uno de vosotros tiene en su tienda(V)». 17 Y así lo hicieron los hijos de Israel, y unos recogieron mucho y otros poco. 18 Cuando lo midieron con el gomer, al que había recogido mucho no le sobró, ni le faltó al que había recogido poco(W); cada uno había recogido lo que iba a comer. 19 Y Moisés les dijo: Que nadie deje nada para[n] la mañana siguiente(X). 20 Mas no obedecieron[o] a Moisés, y algunos dejaron parte del maná[p] para la mañana siguiente, pero crió gusanos y se pudrió; y Moisés se enojó con ellos. 21 Lo recogían cada mañana, cada uno lo que iba a comer; pero cuando el sol calentaba, se derretía.

22 Y sucedió que en el sexto día recogieron doble porción(Y) de alimento, dos gomeres para cada uno. Y cuando todos los jefes de la congregación vinieron y se lo hicieron saber a Moisés(Z), 23 él les respondió: Esto es lo que ha dicho el Señor: «Mañana es día de reposo, día de reposo consagrado al Señor(AA). Coced lo que habéis de cocer y hervid lo que habéis de hervir, y todo lo que sobre guardadlo para[q] mañana(AB)». 24 Y lo guardaron hasta la mañana como Moisés había mandado, y no se pudrió ni hubo en él gusano alguno(AC). 25 Y Moisés dijo: Comedlo hoy, porque hoy es día de reposo para el Señor; hoy no lo hallaréis en el campo. 26 Seis días lo recogeréis, pero el séptimo día, día de reposo, no habrá nada[r](AD). 27 Y sucedió que el séptimo día, algunos del pueblo salieron a recoger, pero no encontraron nada. 28 Entonces el Señor dijo a Moisés: ¿Hasta cuándo os negaréis a guardar mis mandamientos y mis leyes(AE)? 29 Mirad que el Señor os ha dado el día de reposo; por eso el sexto día os da pan para dos días. Quédese cada uno en su lugar, y que nadie salga de su lugar el séptimo día. 30 Y el pueblo reposó el séptimo día.

31 Y la casa de Israel le puso el nombre de maná[s](AF), y era como la semilla del cilantro(AG), blanco(AH), y su sabor era como de hojuelas con miel. 32 Y Moisés dijo: Esto es lo[t] que el Señor ha mandado: «Que se guarde un gomer lleno de maná[u] para vuestras generaciones, para que vean el pan que yo os di de comer en el desierto cuando os saqué de la tierra de Egipto». 33 Entonces dijo Moisés a Aarón: Toma una vasija y pon en ella un gomer lleno de maná(AI), y colócalo delante del Señor a fin de guardarlo para vuestras generaciones. 34 Tal como el Señor ordenó a Moisés, así lo colocó Aarón delante del Testimonio(AJ) para que fuera guardado. 35 Y los hijos de Israel comieron el maná cuarenta años, hasta que llegaron a tierra habitada; comieron el maná hasta que llegaron a los límites de la tierra de Canaán(AK). 36 Un gomer(AL) es la décima parte de un efa[v].
