8 1 А Иса пошёл на Оливковую гору.
Прощение женщины, уличённой в супружеской измене
2 Рано утром Он опять был в храме. Вокруг Него собралось много людей, и Он сел и стал их учить. 3 Учители Таурата и блюстители Закона привели женщину, уличённую в супружеской измене. Они поставили её перед народом 4 и сказали Исе:
– Учитель, мы поймали эту женщину на месте преступления, она изменила мужу! 5 Муса повелевает в Таурате побивать таких камнями.[a] А Ты что скажешь?
6 Они спросили это, чтобы найти повод уловить Ису в чём-либо и обвинить Его[b]. Иса склонился и писал пальцем на земле. 7 Они упрямо продолжали Его спрашивать. Тогда Иса выпрямился и сказал:
– Кто из вас без греха, пусть первым бросит в неё камень.
8 И Он опять, склонившись, продолжал писать на земле. 9 Тогда они начали по одному уходить, начиная с самых старших. В конце концов остались только Иса и женщина. 10 Иса выпрямился и спросил:
– Женщина, где твои обвинители? Разве никто не осудил тебя?
11 – Никто, Господин, – ответила она.
– И Я тебя не осуждаю, – сказал Иса. – Иди и больше не греши.

12 Когда Иса вновь заговорил с народом, Он сказал:
– Я свет миру[c]. Тот, кто идёт за Мной, не будет ходить во тьме, но будет иметь свет жизни.
13 Блюстители Закона тогда сказали Ему:
– Но ведь Ты Сам свидетельствуешь о Себе, значит, Твоё свидетельство недействительно.
14 Иса ответил:
– Даже если Я и Сам свидетельствую о Себе, Моё свидетельство истинно, потому что Я знаю, откуда Я пришёл и куда Я иду. Вы же не имеете никакого понятия ни о том, откуда Я пришёл, ни о том, куда Я иду. 15 Вы судите по человеческим меркам, Я же не сужу никого. 16 Но если Я и сужу, Мой суд справедлив, потому что Я не один, со Мной Отец, Который послал Меня. 17 В вашем же Законе написано, что когда свидетельствуют двое, то их свидетельство имеет силу[d]. 18 О Себе свидетельствую Я Сам и Мой Отец, Который послал Меня.
19 Они тогда спросили:
– Где же Твой Отец?
Иса ответил:
– Вы не знаете ни Меня, ни Моего Отца. Если бы вы знали Меня, вы бы знали и Моего Отца.
20 Он сказал это, когда учил в храме, там, где собирали пожертвования. Никто, однако, не схватил Его, потому что Его время ещё не настало.

21 Иса сказал им ещё раз:
– Я ухожу, и вы будете искать Меня, и умрёте во грехе вашем. Туда, куда Я иду, вы не сможете прийти.
22 Предводители иудеев стали тогда спрашивать:
– Он что, собирается покончить с Собой? Может, это Он имеет в виду, когда говорит: «Туда, куда Я иду, вы не сможете прийти»?
23 Иса продолжал:
– Вы земные, а Я пришёл с небес. Вы принадлежите этому миру, а Я этому миру не принадлежу. 24 Поэтому Я сказал вам, что вы умрёте в ваших грехах. Если вы не поверите, что Я Тот, за Кого Себя выдаю,[e] вы действительно умрёте в ваших грехах.
25 – Кто же Ты такой? – спросили они.
– Я вам уже давно говорю, кто Я такой, – ответил Иса. – 26 Я мог бы обвинить вас во многом, но Тот, Кто послал Меня, говорит истину, и то, что Я слышал от Него, Я говорю миру.
27 Они не поняли, что Он говорил им о Небесном Отце. 28 Тогда Иса сказал:
– Когда вы вознесёте[f] Ниспосланного как Человек, тогда и узнаете, что Я Тот, за Кого Себя выдаю, и что от Себя Я не делаю ничего, а говорю то, чему Отец научил Меня. 29 Пославший Меня всегда со Мной, Он Меня одного не оставляет, потому что Я делаю то, что угодно Ему.
30 Когда Он это говорил, многие поверили в Него.
Дети Всевышнего и дети дьявола
31 Иса сказал иудеям, поверившим в Него:
– Если вы будете верны Моему учению, то вы действительно Мои ученики. 32 Вы тогда узнаете истину, и истина сделает вас свободными.
33 Они ответили:
– Мы потомки Ибрахима и никогда не были никому рабами. Как это мы можем «стать свободными»?
34 Иса ответил:
– Говорю вам истину, каждый, кто грешит, – раб греха. 35 Раб не может надеяться на постоянное место в доме, сын же остаётся в нём навсегда. 36 Поэтому если Сын вас освободит, вы будете действительно свободными. 37 Я знаю, что вы потомки Ибрахима, но вы готовы убить Меня, потому что Моё слово не находит в вас отклика. 38 Я говорю вам о том, что Я видел у Моего Отца, а вы делаете то, что вы услышали от вашего отца.
39 – Наш отец – Ибрахим, – ответили они.
– Если бы вы были детьми Ибрахима, – ответил Иса, – вы бы делали дела Ибрахима, 40 но вы стремитесь убить Меня, Человека, говорящего вам истину – истину, которую Я слышал от Всевышнего. Ибрахим так не делал. 41 Вы делаете то, что делал ваш отец.
– Мы не какие-нибудь незаконнорождённые, – говорили они, – у нас один Отец – Сам Всевышний.
42 Иса сказал им:
– Если бы Всевышний был вашим Отцом, то вы любили бы Меня, потому что Я пришёл от Всевышнего, и вот Я здесь. Я пришёл не Сам от Себя, Меня послал Он. 43 Почему вы не понимаете того, о чём Я вам говорю? Да потому, что вы не можете даже слышать слова Моего. 44 Вы принадлежите вашему отцу, дьяволу, и хотите исполнить желания вашего отца. Он от начала был человекоубийцей и не устоял в истине, потому что в нём нет никакой истины. Когда он лжёт, то делает то, что ему свойственно, потому что он лжец и отец лжи. 45 Но Я говорю вам истину, и поэтому вы Мне не верите! 46 Может ли кто-либо из вас уличить Меня во грехе? Если же Я говорю истину, то почему вы Мне не верите? 47 Тот, кто принадлежит Всевышнему, слышит, что говорит Всевышний. Вы не слышите Меня потому, что вы не принадлежите Всевышнему.
Иса Масих говорит о Своём вечном существовании
48 Бывшие там иудеи стали говорить Исе:
– Ну разве мы не правы, когда говорим, что Ты самарянин[g], и притом одержим демоном!
49 – Я не одержим, – ответил Иса, – Я чту Моего Отца, а вы бесчестите Меня. 50 Я не ищу славы Себе, но есть Тот, Кто ищет её для Меня, пусть Он и судит. 51 Говорю вам истину: кто соблюдает слово Моё, тот никогда не увидит смерти[h].
52 Тогда иудеи закричали:
– Теперь мы точно знаем, что Ты одержим демоном! Ибрахим умер, и все другие пророки умерли, а Ты говоришь, что кто исполняет Твоё слово, тот никогда не умрёт. 53 Неужели Ты больше нашего отца Ибрахима, который умер? И другие пророки тоже умерли. А кем Ты Себя считаешь?
54 Иса ответил:
– Если Я славлю Самого Себя, то слава эта ничего не значит. Меня прославляет Мой Отец, Которого вы называете своим Богом, 55 хотя вы Его и не знаете. Но Я Его знаю, и если бы Я сказал, что не знаю Его, то был бы таким же лжецом, как и вы. Но Я знаю Его и исполняю Его слово. 56 Ваш отец Ибрахим радовался при мысли, что увидит Мой день, и он его увидел и был счастлив.
57 – Да Тебе нет и пятидесяти лет, – говорили Ему иудеи, – и Ты видел Ибрахима?
58 Иса сказал:
– Говорю вам истину, ещё до того, как Ибрахим родился, Я ЕСТЬ[i]!
59 Тогда они схватили камни, чтобы бросить в Него, но Иса скрылся и вышел из храма.[j]

Jesus deflates the rigorists
2-5 Early next morning he returned to the Temple and the entire crowd came to him. So he sat down and began to teach them. But the scribes and Pharisees brought in to him a woman who had been caught in adultery. They made her stand in front, and then said to him, “Now, master, this woman has been caught in adultery, in the very act. According to the Law, Moses commanded us to stone such women to death. Now, what do you say about her?”
6-9a They said this to test him, so that they might have some good grounds for an accusation. But Jesus stooped down and began to write with his finger in the dust on the ground. But as they persisted in their questioning, he straightened himself up and said to them, “Let the one among you who has never sinned throw the first stone at her.” Then he stooped down again and continued writing with his finger on the ground. And when they heard what he said, they were convicted by their own consciences and went out, one by one, beginning with the eldest until they had all gone.
9b-10 Jesus was left alone, with the woman still standing where they had put her. So he stood up and said to her, “Where are they all—did no one condemn you?”
11 And she said, “No one, sir.” “Neither do I condemn you,” said Jesus to her. “Go home and do not sin again.”
Jesus’ bold claims—about himself—and his Father
12 Later, Jesus spoke to the people again and said, “I am the light of the world. The man who follows me will never walk in the dark but will live his life in the light.”
13 This made the Pharisees say to him, “You are testifying to yourself—your evidence is not valid.”
14-18 Jesus answered, “Even if I am testifying to myself, my evidence is valid, for I know where I have come from and I know where I am going. But as for you, you have no idea where I come from or where I am going. You are judging by human standards, but I am not judging anyone. Yet if I should judge, my decision would be just, for I am not alone—the Father who sent me is with me. In your Law, it is stated that the witness of two persons is valid. I am one testifying to myself and the second witness to me is the Father who sent me.”
19 “And where is this father of yours?” they replied. “You do not know my Father,” returned Jesus, “any more than you know me: if you had known me, you would have known him.”
20 Jesus made these statements while he was teaching in the Temple treasury. Yet no one arrested him, for his time had not yet come.
21 Later, Jesus spoke to them again and said, “I am going away and you will try to find me, but you will die in your sins. You cannot come where I am going.”
22 This made the Jews say, “Is he going to kill himself, then? Is that why he says, “You cannot come where I am going’?”
23-24 “The difference between us,” Jesus said to them, “is that you come from below and I am from above. You belong to this world but I do not. That is why I told you will die in your sins. For unless you believe that I am who I am, you will die in your sins.”
25-26 Then they said, “Who are you?” “I am what I have told you I was from the beginning,” replied Jesus. “There is much in you that I could speak about and condemn. But he who sent me is true and I am only speaking to this world what I myself have heard from him.”
27-30 They did not realise that he was talking to them about the Father. So Jesus resumed, “When you have lifted up the Son of Man, then you will realise that I am who I say I am, and that I do nothing on my own authority but speak simply as my Father has taught me. The one who sent me is with me now: the Father has never left me alone for I always do what pleases him.” And even while he said these words, many people believed in him.
Jesus speaks of personal freedom
31-32 So Jesus said to the Jews who believed in him, “If you are faithful to what I have said, you are truly my disciples. And you will know the truth and the truth will set you free!”
33 “But we are descendants of Abraham,” they replied, “and we have never in our lives been any man’s slaves. How can you say to us, ‘You will be set free’?”
34-38 Jesus returned, “Believe me when I tell you that every man who commits sin is a slave. For a slave is no permanent part of a household, but a son is. If the Son, then, sets you free, you are really free! I know that you are descended from Abraham, but some of you are looking for a way to kill me because you can’t bear my words. I am telling you what I have seen in the presence of my Father, and you are doing what you have seen in the presence of your father.”
39-41 “Our father is Abraham!” they retorted. “If you were the children of Abraham, you would do the sort of things Abraham did. But in fact, at this moment, you are looking for a way to kill me, simply because I am a man who has told you the truth that I have heard from God. Abraham would never have done that. No, you are doing your father’s work.” “We are not illegitimate!” they retorted. “We have one Father—God.”
42-47 “If God were really your Father,” replied Jesus, “you would have loved me. For I came from God, and I am here. I did not come of my own accord—he sent me, and I am here. Why do you not understand my words? It is because you cannot hear what I am really saying. Your father is the devil, and what you are wanting to do is what your father longs to do. He always was a murderer, and has never dealt with the truth, since the truth will have nothing to do with him. Whenever he tells a lie, he speaks in character, for he is a liar and the father of lies. And it is because I speak the truth that you will not believe me. Which of you can prove me guilty of sin? If I am speaking the truth, why is it that you do not believe me? The man who is born of God can hear these words of God and the reason why you cannot hear the words of God is simply this, that you are not the sons of God.”
48 “How right we are,” retorted the Jews, “in calling you a Samaritan, and mad at that!”
49-51 “No,” replied Jesus, “I am not mad. I am honouring my Father and you are trying to dishonour me. But I am not concerned with my own glory: there is one whose concern it is, and he is the true judge. Believe me when I tell you that if anybody accepts my words, he will never see death at all.”
52-53 “Now we know that you’re mad,” replied the Jews. “Why, Abraham died and the prophets, too, and yet you say, ‘If a man accepts my words, he will never experience death!’ Are you greater than our father, Abraham? He died, and so did the prophets—who are you making yourself out to be?”
54-56 “If I were trying to glorify myself,” returned Jesus, “such glory would be worthless. But it is my Father who glorifies me, the very one whom you say is your God—though you have never known him. But I know him, and if I said I did not know him, I should be as much a liar as you are! But I do know him and I am faithful to what he says. As for your father, Abraham, his great joy was that he would see my coming. Now he has seen it and he is overjoyed.”
57 “Look,” said the Jews to him, “you are not fifty yet, and has Abraham seen you?”
58 “I tell you in solemn truth,” returned Jesus, “before there was an Abraham, I AM!”
59 At this, they picked up stones to hurl at him, but Jesus disappeared and made his way out of the Temple.

2 At dawn he appeared again in the temple courts, where all the people gathered around him, and he sat down to teach them.(B) 3 The teachers of the law and the Pharisees brought in a woman caught in adultery. They made her stand before the group 4 and said to Jesus, “Teacher, this woman was caught in the act of adultery. 5 In the Law Moses commanded us to stone such women.(C) Now what do you say?” 6 They were using this question as a trap,(D) in order to have a basis for accusing him.(E)
But Jesus bent down and started to write on the ground with his finger. 7 When they kept on questioning him, he straightened up and said to them, “Let any one of you who is without sin be the first to throw a stone(F) at her.”(G) 8 Again he stooped down and wrote on the ground.
9 At this, those who heard began to go away one at a time, the older ones first, until only Jesus was left, with the woman still standing there. 10 Jesus straightened up and asked her, “Woman, where are they? Has no one condemned you?”
11 “No one, sir,” she said.
“Then neither do I condemn you,”(H) Jesus declared. “Go now and leave your life of sin.”(I)
Dispute Over Jesus’ Testimony
12 When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, “I am(J) the light of the world.(K) Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”(L)
13 The Pharisees challenged him, “Here you are, appearing as your own witness; your testimony is not valid.”(M)
14 Jesus answered, “Even if I testify on my own behalf, my testimony is valid, for I know where I came from and where I am going.(N) But you have no idea where I come from(O) or where I am going. 15 You judge by human standards;(P) I pass judgment on no one.(Q) 16 But if I do judge, my decisions are true, because I am not alone. I stand with the Father, who sent me.(R) 17 In your own Law it is written that the testimony of two witnesses is true.(S) 18 I am one who testifies for myself; my other witness is the Father, who sent me.”(T)
19 Then they asked him, “Where is your father?”
“You do not know me or my Father,”(U) Jesus replied. “If you knew me, you would know my Father also.”(V) 20 He spoke these words while teaching(W) in the temple courts near the place where the offerings were put.(X) Yet no one seized him, because his hour had not yet come.(Y)
Dispute Over Who Jesus Is
21 Once more Jesus said to them, “I am going away, and you will look for me, and you will die(Z) in your sin. Where I go, you cannot come.”(AA)
22 This made the Jews ask, “Will he kill himself? Is that why he says, ‘Where I go, you cannot come’?”
23 But he continued, “You are from below; I am from above. You are of this world; I am not of this world.(AB) 24 I told you that you would die in your sins; if you do not believe that I am he,(AC) you will indeed die in your sins.”
25 “Who are you?” they asked.
“Just what I have been telling you from the beginning,” Jesus replied. 26 “I have much to say in judgment of you. But he who sent me is trustworthy,(AD) and what I have heard from him I tell the world.”(AE)
27 They did not understand that he was telling them about his Father. 28 So Jesus said, “When you have lifted up[a] the Son of Man,(AF) then you will know that I am he and that I do nothing on my own but speak just what the Father has taught me.(AG) 29 The one who sent me is with me; he has not left me alone,(AH) for I always do what pleases him.”(AI) 30 Even as he spoke, many believed in him.(AJ)
Dispute Over Whose Children Jesus’ Opponents Are
31 To the Jews who had believed him, Jesus said, “If you hold to my teaching,(AK) you are really my disciples. 32 Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”(AL)
33 They answered him, “We are Abraham’s descendants(AM) and have never been slaves of anyone. How can you say that we shall be set free?”
34 Jesus replied, “Very truly I tell you, everyone who sins is a slave to sin.(AN) 35 Now a slave has no permanent place in the family, but a son belongs to it forever.(AO) 36 So if the Son sets you free,(AP) you will be free indeed. 37 I know that you are Abraham’s descendants. Yet you are looking for a way to kill me,(AQ) because you have no room for my word. 38 I am telling you what I have seen in the Father’s presence,(AR) and you are doing what you have heard from your father.[b]”(AS)
39 “Abraham is our father,” they answered.
“If you were Abraham’s children,”(AT) said Jesus, “then you would[c] do what Abraham did. 40 As it is, you are looking for a way to kill me,(AU) a man who has told you the truth that I heard from God.(AV) Abraham did not do such things. 41 You are doing the works of your own father.”(AW)
“We are not illegitimate children,” they protested. “The only Father we have is God himself.”(AX)
42 Jesus said to them, “If God were your Father, you would love me,(AY) for I have come here from God.(AZ) I have not come on my own;(BA) God sent me.(BB) 43 Why is my language not clear to you? Because you are unable to hear what I say. 44 You belong to your father, the devil,(BC) and you want to carry out your father’s desires.(BD) He was a murderer from the beginning, not holding to the truth, for there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks his native language, for he is a liar and the father of lies.(BE) 45 Yet because I tell the truth,(BF) you do not believe me! 46 Can any of you prove me guilty of sin? If I am telling the truth, why don’t you believe me? 47 Whoever belongs to God hears what God says.(BG) The reason you do not hear is that you do not belong to God.”
Jesus’ Claims About Himself
48 The Jews answered him, “Aren’t we right in saying that you are a Samaritan(BH) and demon-possessed?”(BI)
49 “I am not possessed by a demon,” said Jesus, “but I honor my Father and you dishonor me. 50 I am not seeking glory for myself;(BJ) but there is one who seeks it, and he is the judge. 51 Very truly I tell you, whoever obeys my word will never see death.”(BK)
52 At this they exclaimed, “Now we know that you are demon-possessed!(BL) Abraham died and so did the prophets, yet you say that whoever obeys your word will never taste death. 53 Are you greater than our father Abraham?(BM) He died, and so did the prophets. Who do you think you are?”
54 Jesus replied, “If I glorify myself,(BN) my glory means nothing. My Father, whom you claim as your God, is the one who glorifies me.(BO) 55 Though you do not know him,(BP) I know him.(BQ) If I said I did not, I would be a liar like you, but I do know him and obey his word.(BR) 56 Your father Abraham(BS) rejoiced at the thought of seeing my day; he saw it(BT) and was glad.”
57 “You are not yet fifty years old,” they said to him, “and you have seen Abraham!”
58 “Very truly I tell you,” Jesus answered, “before Abraham was born,(BU) I am!”(BV) 59 At this, they picked up stones to stone him,(BW) but Jesus hid himself,(BX) slipping away from the temple grounds.
