4 Но Иона был этим очень недоволен и злился. 2 Он стал молиться Господу:
– О Господи, разве не это я говорил, когда еще был дома? Поэтому-то я и бежал в Таршиш. Я же знал, что Ты Бог милостивый и милосердный, долготерпеливый и богатый любовью и не желаешь насылать беду. 3 А теперь, Господи, забери мою жизнь, потому что мне лучше умереть, чем жить.
4 Но Господь ответил:
– Стоит ли тебе гневаться?
5 Иона вышел и сел к востоку от города. Там он сделал себе шалаш, сел под ним в тени и стал ждать, что произойдет с городом. 6 А Господь Бог устроил так, что выросло растение[a], которое поднялось над Ионой, чтобы тень над его головой избавила его от раздражения, и Иона очень обрадовался этому растению. 7 Но на рассвете следующего дня Бог устроил так, что червь подточил растение, и оно засохло. 8 Когда солнце взошло, Бог наслал знойный восточный ветер, и солнце стало жечь голову Ионы так, что он изнемог. Он захотел умереть и сказал:
– Лучше мне умереть, чем жить.
9 А Бог сказал Ионе:
– Стоит ли тебе гневаться из-за растения?
– Стоит, – ответил он, – я до смерти разгневан.
10 Но Господь сказал:
– Ты сожалеешь о растении, за которым ты не ухаживал, которое не растил. Оно за ночь выросло и за ночь погибло. 11 Так Мне ли не пожалеть великого города Ниневии, где больше ста двадцати тысяч жителей не знают, где право, где лево, а также много скота?

約拿不悅
4 約拿對這事非常不高興，並且發起怒來， 2 就向耶和華禱告，說：“耶和華啊！我還在本國的時候，不是這樣說過嗎？我知道你是有恩典有憐憫的 神，不輕易發怒，並且有豐盛的慈愛，轉意不降災禍，所以我才急忙逃往他施去。 3 耶和華啊！現在求你取去我的性命吧，因為我死了比活著還好。”

4 耶和華回答說：“你這樣發怒對不對呢？”
5 約拿出了城，在城東坐下；他在那裡搭了一座棚，坐在棚蔭之下，要看看那城究竟怎樣。 6 耶和華 神安排一棵蓖麻，使它長起來高過約拿，成了陰影遮蓋他的頭，免他受苦；約拿因這棵蓖麻，就大大歡暢。 7 次日黎明的時候， 神安排一條蟲子，蛀蝕這棵蓖麻，蓖麻就枯槁了。 8 日出的時候， 神又安排炎熱的東風。烈日曬在約拿的頭上，以致發昏，他就為自己求死，說：“我死了比活著還好。”
9 神問約拿：“你因這棵蓖麻這樣發怒，對不對呢？”約拿說：“我發怒以至於死都是對的。”

King James Version
4 But it displeased Jonah exceedingly, and he was very angry.
2 And he prayed unto the Lord, and said, I pray thee, O Lord, was not this my saying, when I was yet in my country? Therefore I fled before unto Tarshish: for I knew that thou art a gracious God, and merciful, slow to anger, and of great kindness, and repentest thee of the evil.
3 Therefore now, O Lord, take, I beseech thee, my life from me; for it is better for me to die than to live.
4 Then said the Lord, Doest thou well to be angry?
5 So Jonah went out of the city, and sat on the east side of the city, and there made him a booth, and sat under it in the shadow, till he might see what would become of the city.
6 And the Lord God prepared a gourd, and made it to come up over Jonah, that it might be a shadow over his head, to deliver him from his grief. So Jonah was exceeding glad of the gourd.
7 But God prepared a worm when the morning rose the next day, and it smote the gourd that it withered.
8 And it came to pass, when the sun did arise, that God prepared a vehement east wind; and the sun beat upon the head of Jonah, that he fainted, and wished in himself to die, and said, It is better for me to die than to live.
9 And God said to Jonah, Doest thou well to be angry for the gourd? And he said, I do well to be angry, even unto death.
10 Then said the Lord, Thou hast had pity on the gourd, for the which thou hast not laboured, neither madest it grow; which came up in a night, and perished in a night:
11 And should not I spare Nineveh, that great city, wherein are more than sixscore thousand persons that cannot discern between their right hand and their left hand; and also much cattle?
