9 И отвечал Иов и сказал:
2 правда! знаю, что так; но как оправдается человек пред Богом?
3 Если захочет вступить в прение с Ним, то не ответит Ему ни на одно из тысячи.
4 Премудр сердцем и могущ силою; кто восставал против Него и оставался в покое?
5 Он передвигает горы, и не узнают их: Он превращает их в гневе Своем;
6 сдвигает землю с места ее, и столбы ее дрожат;
7 скажет солнцу, --и не взойдет, и на звезды налагает печать.
8 Он один распростирает небеса и ходит по высотам моря;
9 сотворил Ас, Кесиль и Хима (1) и тайники юга;
10 делает великое, неисследимое и чудное без числа!
11 Вот, Он пройдет предо мною, и не увижу Его; пронесется и не замечу Его.
12 Возьмет, и кто возбранит Ему? кто скажет Ему: что Ты делаешь?
13 Бог не отвратит гнева Своего; пред Ним падут поборники гордыни.
14 Тем более могу ли я отвечать Ему и приискивать себе слова пред Ним?
15 Хотя бы я и прав был, но не буду отвечать, а буду умолять Судию моего.
16 Если бы я воззвал, и Он ответил мне, --я не поверил бы, что голос мой услышал Тот,
17 Кто в вихре разит меня и умножает безвинно мои раны,
18 не дает мне перевести духа, но пресыщает меня горестями.
19 Если [действовать] силою, то Он могуществен; если судом, кто сведет меня с Ним?
20 Если я буду оправдываться, то мои же уста обвинят меня; [если] я невинен, то Он признает меня виновным.
21 Невинен я; не хочу знать души моей, презираю жизнь мою.
22 Все одно; поэтому я сказал, что Он губит и непорочного и виновного.
23 Если этого поражает Он бичом вдруг, то пытке невинных посмевается.
24 Земля отдана в руки нечестивых; лица судей ее Он закрывает. Если не Он, то кто же?
25 Дни мои быстрее гонца, --бегут, не видят добра,
26 несутся, как легкие ладьи, как орел стремится на добычу.
27 Если сказать мне: забуду я жалобы мои, отложу мрачный вид свой и ободрюсь;
28 то трепещу всех страданий моих, зная, что Ты не объявишь меня невинным.
29 Если же я виновен, то для чего напрасно томлюсь?
30 Хотя бы я омылся и снежною водою и совершенно очистил руки мои,
31 то и тогда Ты погрузишь меня в грязь, и возгнушаются мною одежды мои.
32 Ибо Он не человек, как я, чтоб я мог отвечать Ему и идти вместе с Ним на суд!
33 Нет между нами посредника, который положил бы руку свою на обоих нас.
34 Да отстранит Он от меня жезл Свой, и страх Его да не ужасает меня, --
35 и тогда я буду говорить и не убоюсь Его, ибо я не таков сам в себе.

Job: There Is No Mediator
9 Then Job answered and said:
2 “Truly I know it is so,
But how can a (A)man be (B)righteous before God?
3 If one wished to [a]contend with Him,
He could not answer Him one time out of a thousand.
4 (C)God is wise in heart and mighty in strength.
Who has hardened himself against Him and prospered?
5 He removes the mountains, and they do not know
When He overturns them in His anger;
6 He (D)shakes the earth out of its place,
And its (E)pillars tremble;
7 He commands the sun, and it does not rise;
He seals off the stars;
8 (F)He alone spreads out the heavens,
And [b]treads on the [c]waves of the sea;
9 (G)He made [d]the Bear, Orion, and the Pleiades,
And the chambers of the south;
10 (H)He does great things past finding out,
Yes, wonders without number.
11 (I)If He goes by me, I do not see Him;
If He moves past, I do not perceive Him;
12 (J)If He takes away, [e]who can hinder Him?
Who can say to Him, ‘What are You doing?’
13 God will not withdraw His anger,
(K)The allies of [f]the proud lie prostrate beneath Him.
14 “How then can I answer Him,
And choose my words to reason with Him?
15 (L)For though I were righteous, I could not answer Him;
I would beg mercy of my Judge.
16 If I called and He answered me,
I would not believe that He was listening to my voice.
17 For He crushes me with a tempest,
And multiplies my wounds (M)without cause.
18 He will not allow me to catch my breath,
But fills me with bitterness.
19 If it is a matter of strength, indeed He is strong;
And if of justice, who will appoint my day in court?
20 Though I were righteous, my own mouth would condemn me;
Though I were blameless, it would prove me perverse.
21 “I am blameless, yet I do not know myself;
I despise my life.
22 It is all one thing;
Therefore I say, (N)‘He destroys the blameless and the wicked.’
23 If the scourge slays suddenly,
He laughs at the plight of the innocent.
24 The earth is given into the hand of the wicked.
He covers the faces of its judges.
If it is not He, who else could it be?
25 “Now (O)my days are swifter than a runner;
They flee away, they see no good.
26 They pass by like [g]swift ships,
(P)Like an eagle swooping on its prey.
27 (Q)If I say, ‘I will forget my complaint,
I will put off my sad face and wear a smile,’
28 (R)I am afraid of all my sufferings;
I know that You (S)will not hold me innocent.
29 If I am condemned,
Why then do I labor in vain?
30 (T)If I wash myself with snow water,
And cleanse my hands with [h]soap,
31 Yet You will plunge me into the pit,
And my own clothes will [i]abhor me.
32 “For (U)He is not a man, as I am,
That I may answer Him,
And that we should go to court together.
33 (V)Nor is there any mediator between us,
Who may lay his hand on us both.
34 (W)Let Him take His rod away from me,
And do not let dread of Him terrify me.
35 Then I would speak and not fear Him,
But it is not so with me.

9 Then Job answered and said,

3 If he will contend with him, he cannot answer him one of a thousand.

18 He will not suffer me to take my breath, but filleth me with bitterness.
19 If I speak of strength, lo, he is strong: and if of judgment, who shall set me a time to plead?
20 If I justify myself, mine own mouth shall condemn me: if I say, I am perfect, it shall also prove me perverse.
21 Though I were perfect, yet would I not know my soul: I would despise my life.
22 This is one thing, therefore I said it, He destroyeth the perfect and the wicked.
23 If the scourge slay suddenly, he will laugh at the trial of the innocent.
24 The earth is given into the hand of the wicked: he covereth the faces of the judges thereof; if not, where, and who is he?
25 Now my days are swifter than a post: they flee away, they see no good.
26 They are passed away as the swift ships: as the eagle that hasteth to the prey.
27 If I say, I will forget my complaint, I will leave off my heaviness, and comfort myself:
28 I am afraid of all my sorrows, I know that thou wilt not hold me innocent.
29 If I be wicked, why then labour I in vain?
30 If I wash myself with snow water, and make my hands never so clean;
31 Yet shalt thou plunge me in the ditch, and mine own clothes shall abhor me.
32 For he is not a man, as I am, that I should answer him, and we should come together in judgment.
33 Neither is there any daysman betwixt us, that might lay his hand upon us both.
34 Let him take his rod away from me, and let not his fear terrify me:
35 Then would I speak, and not fear him; but it is not so with me.

9 Då svarade Job:
2 Visst vet jag allt detta. Det är inga nyheter du kommer med. Men hur kan en människa vara verkligt god i Guds ögon?
3 Om Gud bestämmer sig för att gå till rätta med en människa, kan hon då svara ens en gång av tusen på de frågor han ställer?
4 För Gud är ju vis och mäktig, och vem har lyckats mäta sig med honom?
5 Han flyttar bergen och störtar omkull dem i sin vrede.
6 Han skakar jorden i dess grundvalar.
7 Solen går inte upp, och stjärnorna lyser inte, om han befaller så!
8 Det är bara han som kan spänna ut himlavalvet och stolt gå fram över havens vågor.
9 Han har skapat Karlavagnen, Orion, Plejaderna och södra Djurkretsen.
10 Han gör otroliga under, alltför många för att man ska kunna räkna dem.
11 Han far osynlig förbi. Han drar fram, men jag ser honom inte.
12 Vem kan hindra honom, när han sänder död för att rycka bort en människa? Vem vågar fråga honom: 'Vad är det du gör?'
13 Guds vrede avtar inte. Människans stolthet måste böja sig för honom.
14 Och vem är jag, som skulle försöka gå till rätta med den Allsmäktige Guden eller ens resonera med honom?
15 Även om jag var syndfri, skulle jag inte säga ett ord. Jag skulle bara be honom, min domare, om nåd.
16 Och även om mina böner blev besvarade, skulle jag knappast våga tro att han hade hört mitt rop.
17 Han kan krossa mig i en storm och föröka mitt lidande utan orsak.
18 Han låter mig inte andas ut, utan han fyller mig med sorg och bitterhet.
19 Om det gäller kraft är han den starkaste, och om det gäller rättvisa, vem törs då ifrågasätta hans dom?
20 Till och med om jag vore fullkomligt oskyldig, skulle min mun förråda mig.
21 Även om jag är helt utan skuld, föraktar jag mig själv.
22 Oskyldig eller ej, det gör precis detsamma inför honom, för han förgör dem båda.
23 Han hånar den oskyldige när han drabbas av olycka.
24 När ett land faller i de ogudaktigas händer förblindar han dess domare. Om det inte är han som gör det, vem är det då?
25 Mitt liv rinner undan utan en dag av glädje.
26 Mina år försvinner snabbt som lätta båtar nerför floden och som örnen i dykningen efter byte.
27 Om jag beslutade mig för att glömma min klagan mot Gud, att sluta upp med min sorg och vara glad,
28 så skulle han ändå drabba mig. För jag vet att han inte vill anse mig som oskyldig
29 utan kommer att döma mig. Så vad tjänar det till att försöka?
30 Även om jag tvättade mig i det renaste vatten och gjorde mina händer rena med lut,
31 skulle han ändå sänka mig ner i dy och lera, så att till och med mina kläder skulle avsky mig.
32-33 Jag kan inte försvara mig, för han är inte en människa som jag. I så fall skulle vi kunna mötas i domstol, men det finns ingen skiljeman, inte någon mellanhand eller medlare, som har makt över oss båda.
34 Tänk om jag kunde slippa rappen av din käpp, så att jag inte längre behövde leva i skräck.
35 Då skulle jag kunna tala utan fruktan och frimodigt hävda att jag är oskyldig.
