Рахав и лазутчики
2 Иешуа, сын Нуна, тайно послал из лагеря, расположенного в Шиттиме, двух лазутчиков.
– Пойдите, осмотрите эту землю, – сказал он, – особенно Иерихон.
Они отправились и пришли в дом блудницы, которую звали Рахав, и остались там ночевать.
2 Царю Иерихона донесли:
– Какие-то исраильтяне пришли сюда вечером, чтобы разведать эту землю.
3 И царь Иерихона послал людей сказать Рахав: «Выведи людей, которые пришли к тебе домой, потому что они пришли, чтобы разведать эту землю».

– Да, ко мне приходили эти люди, но я не знала, откуда они. 5 В сумерки, когда наступило время запирать городские ворота, эти люди ушли. Я не знаю, куда они пошли. Поспешите вслед за ними, и вы сможете их догнать.

7 Преследователи бросились в погоню за лазутчиками по дороге, что ведёт к бродам на Иордане, и, как только они вышли, ворота заперли.
8 Прежде чем лазутчики легли спать, Рахав поднялась к ним на крышу 9 и сказала:
– Я знаю, что Вечный отдал эту землю вам, и великий страх перед вами охватил нас. Всех жителей этой страны охватил ужас перед вами. 10 Мы слышали о том, что Вечный осушил ради вас воды Тростникового моря[a], когда вы вышли из Египта, и о том, что вы сделали с Сигоном и Огом, двумя царями аморреев к востоку от Иордана, которых вы полностью истребили. 11 Когда мы услышали об этом, наши сердца обессилели и каждый пал духом из-за вас, потому что Вечный, ваш Бог, – это Бог на небе вверху и на земле внизу. 12 Итак, пожалуйста, поклянитесь мне Вечным, что вы проявите милость к моей семье, как я проявила милость к вам. Дайте верный знак, 13 что вы сохраните жизнь моему отцу и матери, моим братьям и сёстрам, и всем их семьям, и что вы спасёте нас от смерти.
14 – Наши жизни за ваши жизни! – заверили её лазутчики. – Если ты не выдашь нас, мы проявим к тебе милость и верность, когда Вечный даст нам эту землю.
15 И она помогла им спуститься вниз по верёвке через окно, так как дом, где она жила, находился в городской стене. 16 Она сказала им:
– Идите к холмам, чтобы преследователи вас не нашли. Спрячьтесь там на три дня, пока они не вернутся, а потом идите своим путём.
17 Лазутчики сказали ей:
– Мы будем свободны от клятвы, которую ты с нас взяла, 18 если, когда мы войдём в эту землю, ты не привяжешь этот алый шнур к окну, через которое ты нас спустила, и если ты не приведёшь твоих отца и мать, твоих братьев и всю свою семью в твой дом. 19 Если кто-нибудь выйдет из твоего дома на улицу, он сам будет повинен в своей смерти. Мы не будем за это в ответе. Но в смерти любого, кто будет у тебя в доме, мы будем повинны, если на него поднимут руку. 20 Но если ты выдашь нас, мы будем свободны от клятвы, которую ты с нас взяла.
21 – Хорошо, – ответила она, – пусть будет так, как вы сказали.
Она отпустила их и привязала к окну алый шнур.
22 Они ушли, отправившись к холмам, и оставались там три дня, пока преследователи, обыскав всю дорогу, не вернулись, так и не найдя их. 23 После этого те двое мужчин отправились в обратный путь. Они спустились с холмов, перешли вброд реку, пришли к Иешуа, сыну Нуна, и рассказали ему обо всём, что с ними произошло. 24 Они сказали Иешуа:
– Вечный, несомненно, отдал всю эту землю в наши руки. Все её жители охвачены ужасом перед нами.

Rahab and the Spies
2 Then Joshua son of Nun secretly sent two spies(A) from Shittim.(B) “Go, look over(C) the land,” he said, “especially Jericho.(D)” So they went and entered the house of a prostitute named Rahab(E) and stayed there.
2 The king of Jericho was told, “Look, some of the Israelites have come here tonight to spy out the land.” 3 So the king of Jericho sent this message to Rahab:(F) “Bring out the men who came to you and entered your house, because they have come to spy out the whole land.”
4 But the woman had taken the two men(G) and hidden them.(H) She said, “Yes, the men came to me, but I did not know where they had come from. 5 At dusk, when it was time to close the city gate,(I) they left. I don’t know which way they went. Go after them quickly. You may catch up with them.”(J) 6 (But she had taken them up to the roof and hidden them under the stalks of flax(K) she had laid out on the roof.)(L) 7 So the men set out in pursuit of the spies on the road that leads to the fords of the Jordan,(M) and as soon as the pursuers(N) had gone out, the gate was shut.
8 Before the spies lay down for the night, she went up on the roof(O) 9 and said to them, “I know that the Lord has given you this land and that a great fear(P) of you has fallen on us, so that all who live in this country are melting in fear because of you. 10 We have heard how the Lord dried up(Q) the water of the Red Sea[a] for you when you came out of Egypt,(R) and what you did to Sihon and Og,(S) the two kings of the Amorites(T) east of the Jordan,(U) whom you completely destroyed.[b](V) 11 When we heard of it, our hearts melted in fear(W) and everyone’s courage failed(X) because of you,(Y) for the Lord your God(Z) is God in heaven above and on the earth(AA) below.
12 “Now then, please swear to me(AB) by the Lord that you will show kindness(AC) to my family, because I have shown kindness to you. Give me a sure sign(AD) 13 that you will spare the lives of my father and mother, my brothers and sisters, and all who belong to them(AE)—and that you will save us from death.”
14 “Our lives for your lives!”(AF) the men assured her. “If you don’t tell what we are doing, we will treat you kindly and faithfully(AG) when the Lord gives us the land.”
15 So she let them down by a rope(AH) through the window,(AI) for the house she lived in was part of the city wall. 16 She said to them, “Go to the hills(AJ) so the pursuers(AK) will not find you. Hide yourselves there three days(AL) until they return, and then go on your way.”(AM)
17 Now the men had said to her, “This oath(AN) you made us swear will not be binding on us 18 unless, when we enter the land, you have tied this scarlet cord(AO) in the window(AP) through which you let us down, and unless you have brought your father and mother, your brothers and all your family(AQ) into your house. 19 If any of them go outside your house into the street, their blood will be on their own heads;(AR) we will not be responsible. As for those who are in the house with you, their blood will be on our head(AS) if a hand is laid on them. 20 But if you tell what we are doing, we will be released from the oath you made us swear.(AT)”
21 “Agreed,” she replied. “Let it be as you say.”
So she sent them away, and they departed. And she tied the scarlet cord(AU) in the window.(AV)
22 When they left, they went into the hills and stayed there three days,(AW) until the pursuers(AX) had searched all along the road and returned without finding them. 23 Then the two men started back. They went down out of the hills, forded the river and came to Joshua son of Nun and told him everything that had happened to them. 24 They said to Joshua, “The Lord has surely given the whole land into our hands;(AY) all the people are melting in fear(AZ) because of us.”

2 And Joshua the son of Nun sent out of Shittim two men to spy secretly, saying, Go view the land, even Jericho. And they went, and came into an harlot's house, named Rahab, and lodged there.
2 And it was told the king of Jericho, saying, Behold, there came men in hither to night of the children of Israel to search out the country.
3 And the king of Jericho sent unto Rahab, saying, Bring forth the men that are come to thee, which are entered into thine house: for they be come to search out all the country.
4 And the woman took the two men, and hid them, and said thus, There came men unto me, but I wist not whence they were:
5 And it came to pass about the time of shutting of the gate, when it was dark, that the men went out: whither the men went I wot not: pursue after them quickly; for ye shall overtake them.
6 But she had brought them up to the roof of the house, and hid them with the stalks of flax, which she had laid in order upon the roof.
7 And the men pursued after them the way to Jordan unto the fords: and as soon as they which pursued after them were gone out, they shut the gate.
8 And before they were laid down, she came up unto them upon the roof;
9 And she said unto the men, I know that the Lord hath given you the land, and that your terror is fallen upon us, and that all the inhabitants of the land faint because of you.
10 For we have heard how the Lord dried up the water of the Red sea for you, when ye came out of Egypt; and what ye did unto the two kings of the Amorites, that were on the other side Jordan, Sihon and Og, whom ye utterly destroyed.
11 And as soon as we had heard these things, our hearts did melt, neither did there remain any more courage in any man, because of you: for the Lord your God, he is God in heaven above, and in earth beneath.
12 Now therefore, I pray you, swear unto me by the Lord, since I have shewed you kindness, that ye will also shew kindness unto my father's house, and give me a true token:
13 And that ye will save alive my father, and my mother, and my brethren, and my sisters, and all that they have, and deliver our lives from death.
14 And the men answered her, Our life for yours, if ye utter not this our business. And it shall be, when the Lord hath given us the land, that we will deal kindly and truly with thee.
15 Then she let them down by a cord through the window: for her house was upon the town wall, and she dwelt upon the wall.
16 And she said unto them, Get you to the mountain, lest the pursuers meet you; and hide yourselves there three days, until the pursuers be returned: and afterward may ye go your way.
17 And the men said unto her, We will be blameless of this thine oath which thou hast made us swear.
18 Behold, when we come into the land, thou shalt bind this line of scarlet thread in the window which thou didst let us down by: and thou shalt bring thy father, and thy mother, and thy brethren, and all thy father's household, home unto thee.
19 And it shall be, that whosoever shall go out of the doors of thy house into the street, his blood shall be upon his head, and we will be guiltless: and whosoever shall be with thee in the house, his blood shall be on our head, if any hand be upon him.
20 And if thou utter this our business, then we will be quit of thine oath which thou hast made us to swear.
21 And she said, According unto your words, so be it. And she sent them away, and they departed: and she bound the scarlet line in the window.
22 And they went, and came unto the mountain, and abode there three days, until the pursuers were returned: and the pursuers sought them throughout all the way, but found them not.
23 So the two men returned, and descended from the mountain, and passed over, and came to Joshua the son of Nun, and told him all things that befell them:
24 And they said unto Joshua, Truly the Lord hath delivered into our hands all the land; for even all the inhabitants of the country do faint because of us.

2 Entonces Josué, hijo de Nun, envió secretamente desde Sitim(A) a dos espías diciéndoles: «Vayan, reconozcan la tierra, especialmente Jericó». Fueron, pues, y entraron en la casa de una ramera que se llamaba Rahab(B), y allí se hospedaron[a]. 2 Pero le dieron este aviso al rey de Jericó: «Unos hombres de los israelitas han venido aquí esta noche para reconocer toda la tierra». 3 Entonces el rey de Jericó mandó decir a Rahab: «Saca a los hombres que han venido a ti, que han entrado en tu casa, porque han venido para reconocer toda la tierra».
4 Pero la mujer había tomado a los dos hombres y los había escondido(C), y respondió: «Sí, los hombres vinieron a mí, pero yo no sabía de dónde eran. 5 Los hombres salieron a la hora de cerrar la puerta, al oscurecer. No sé adónde fueron[b]. Vayan de prisa tras ellos, que los alcanzarán». 6 Pero ella los había hecho subir al terrado, y los había escondido entre los tallos de lino que había puesto en orden en el terrado(D). 7 Los hombres los persiguieron por el camino al Jordán hasta los vados. Tan pronto como salieron los que los perseguían, fue cerrada la puerta de la ciudad.
8 Antes que los espías se acostaran, Rahab subió al terrado donde ellos estaban, 9 y dijo a los hombres: «Sé que el Señor les ha dado esta tierra(E), y que el terror de ustedes ha caído sobre nosotros(F), y que todos los habitantes del país se han acobardado[c] ante ustedes. 10 Porque hemos oído cómo el Señor secó el agua del mar Rojo[d] delante de ustedes cuando salieron de Egipto(G). También supimos lo que hicieron a los dos reyes de los amorreos que estaban al otro lado del Jordán, a Sehón y a Og, a quienes destruyeron por completo[e](H).
11 »Cuando oímos esto, nos acobardamos[f], no quedando ya valor[g] en hombre alguno por causa de ustedes(I). Porque el Señor, el Dios de ustedes, es Dios arriba en los cielos y abajo en la tierra(J). 12 Ahora pues, júrenme por el Señor, ya que los he tratado con bondad, que ustedes tratarán con bondad a la casa de mi padre. Denme una promesa(K) segura[h], 13 de que dejarán vivir a mi padre y a mi madre, a mis hermanos y a mis hermanas, con todos los suyos, y que librarán nuestras vidas[i] de la muerte».
14 Y los hombres le dijeron: «Nuestra vida[j] responderá por la de ustedes[k], si no revelan nuestro propósito. Y sucederá que cuando el Señor nos dé la tierra, te trataremos con bondad y lealtad[l](L)».
15 Entonces ella los hizo bajar con una cuerda por la ventana, porque su casa estaba en la muralla de la ciudad y ella vivía en la misma muralla. 16 Rahab les dijo: «Vayan a la región montañosa, no sea que los perseguidores los encuentren. Escóndanse allí por tres días hasta que los perseguidores regresen. Entonces pueden seguir su camino(M)».
17 Los hombres le dijeron: «Nosotros quedaremos libres de este juramento[m] que nos has hecho jurar(N), 18 a menos que, cuando entremos en la tierra, ates este cordón de hilo escarlata a la ventana por la cual nos dejas bajar, y reúnas contigo en la casa a tu padre y a tu madre, a tus hermanos y a toda la casa de tu padre(O). 19 Cualquiera que salga de las puertas de tu casa a la calle, su sangre caerá sobre su propia cabeza, y quedaremos libres; pero la sangre de cualquiera que esté en la casa contigo caerá sobre nuestra cabeza(P) si alguien pone su mano sobre él[n]. 20 Pero si divulgas nuestro propósito, quedaremos libres del juramento que nos has hecho jurar».
21 Rahab respondió: «Conforme a lo que ustedes han dicho, así sea». Y los envió. Ellos se fueron, y ella ató el cordón escarlata a la ventana.
22 Los espías se fueron y llegaron a la región montañosa. Allí permanecieron por tres días, hasta que los perseguidores regresaron. Los perseguidores los habían buscado por todo el camino, pero no los habían encontrado. 23 Entonces los dos hombres regresaron y bajaron de la región montañosa, y pasaron y vinieron a Josué, hijo de Nun, y le contaron todo lo que les había acontecido. 24 Y dijeron a Josué: «Ciertamente, el Señor ha entregado toda la tierra en nuestras manos, y además, todos los habitantes de la tierra se han acobardado[o] ante nosotros(Q)».

2 And it was told Melech Yericho, saying, Hinei, anashim have come here halailah of the Bnei Yisroel to spy out HaAretz.
3 And the Melech Yericho sent unto Rachav, saying, Bring forth the anashim that are come to thee, who entered into thine bais; for they have come to spy out kol HaAretz.
4 And the isha took the two anashim, and hid them, and said thus, There came anashim unto me, but I knew not where they had come from;
5 And it came to pass about the time of the shutting of the sha’ar, when it was choshech, that the anashim went out; where the anashim went I know not; pursue after them quickly; for ye may overtake them.
6 But she had brought them up to the gag (roof), and hid them with the pishtei haetz (stalks of flax), which she had laid out upon the gag.
7 So the anashim pursued after them the derech (road) to Yarden unto the fords; and as soon as they which pursued after them were gone out, they closed the sha’ar.
8 And before they [the two spies] lay down, she went up unto them upon the gag;
9 And she said unto the anashim, I know that Hashem hath given you HaAretz, and that your terror is fallen upon us, and that all the inhabitants of HaAretz faint because of you.
10 For we have heard how Hashem dried up the waters of the Yam Suf from before you, when ye came out of Mitzrayim; and what ye did unto the two melachim of the Emori, that were beyond the Yarden, Sichon and Og, whom ye utterly destroyed [put under cherem ban].
11 And as soon as we had heard these things, levaveinu (our hearts) did melt, neither did there remain any more ruach in any ish, because of you; for Hashem Eloheichem hu Elohim baShomayim above, and on HaAretz beneath.
12 Therefore, now, swear unto me by Hashem, since I have showed you chesed, that ye will also show chesed unto Bais Avi, and give me an ot emes (sign of truth);
13 And that ye will save alive avi, and immi, and my ach and my achot, and all that they have, and deliver nafshoteinu (our lives, souls) from mavet (death).
14 And the anashim answered her, Nafsheinu (our soul) shall die for you, if ye utter not what we are doing. And it shall be, when Hashem hath given us HaAretz, that we will deal chesed v’emes with thee.
15 Then she let them down by a chevel (cord, rope) through the chalon (window); for her bais was in the city wall, and she dwelt in the chomah (wall).
16 And she said unto them, Get you to the hill country, lest the rodefim (pursuers) meet you; and hide yourselves there shloshet yamim, until the rodefim return; and afterward may ye go your way.
17 And the anashim said unto her, We will be nekiyyim (free ones) of this thine shevu’ah (oath) which thou hast made us swear,
18 Unless when we come into HaAretz, thou shalt tie this rope of scarlet cord in the chalon by which thou didst let us down; and thou shalt bring thy av, and thy em, and thy achim, and all thy bais avi, with thee inside the bais.
19 And it shall be, that whosoever shall go out of the delatot of thy bais into the chutzah (street, outside), his dahm shall be upon his rosh, and we will be nekiyyim (free ones); and whosoever shall be with thee in the bais, his dahm shall be on rosheinu (our head), if any yad be laid upon him.
20 And if thou utter what we are doing, then we will be nekiyyim (free ones) of thine shevu’ah (oath) which thou hast made us to swear.
21 And she said, According unto your devarim, so be it. And she sent them away, and they departed; and she tied the scarlet cord in the chalon.
22 And they went, and came unto the hill country, and abode there shloshet yamim, until the rodefim returned; and the rodefim sought them all along the derech, but found them not.
23 So the two anashim returned, and descended from the hill country, and passed over, and came to Yehoshua ben Nun, and told him all things that befell them;
24 And they said unto Yehoshua, Truly Hashem hath delivered into yadeinu kol HaAretz; for even all the inhabitants of HaAretz do faint because of us.
