Пролог
1 Вот пророчества Иеремии, сына Хилкии, одного из священнослужителей Анатота, что в земле Вениамина. 2 Вечный[a] возвестил ему Своё слово в тринадцатом году правления иудейского царя Иосии, сына Амона (в 627 г. до н. э.). 3 И во времена правления иудейского царя Иоакима, сына Иосии, и далее, вплоть до пятого месяца одиннадцатого года правления иудейского царя Цедекии, сына Иосии, когда жители Иерусалима были взяты в плен вавилонянами (в августе 586 г. до н. э.), Вечный продолжал возвещать Иеремии Своё слово.[b]
Призвание Иеремии
4 И было ко мне слово Вечного:
5 – Прежде чем Я создал тебя во чреве,
Я уже знал тебя,
прежде чем ты вышел из утробы,
Я избрал тебя;
Я назначил тебя пророком для народов.
6 Я ответил:
– Владыка Вечный! Я совсем не речист, ведь я ещё так молод.
7 Но Вечный сказал мне:
– Не говори: «Я ещё молод». Ты пойдёшь ко всем, к кому Я пошлю тебя, и будешь говорить всё, что Я повелю тебе. 8 Не бойся их, потому что Я с тобой, и Я спасу тебя, – сказал Вечный.
9 Вечный простёр руку, коснулся моих уст и сказал мне:
– Вот, Я вложил слова Мои в твои уста. 10 Смотри, сегодня Я поставлю тебя над народами и царствами, чтобы искоренять и ломать, губить и разрушать, строить и насаждать.
11 И было ко мне слово Вечного:
– Что ты видишь, Иеремия?
– Вижу ветку миндального дерева, – ответил я.
12 – Верно разглядел, – сказал мне Вечный, – ведь Я наблюдаю[c] за тем, чтобы Мои слова исполнились.
13 Вновь Вечный спросил меня:
– Что ты видишь?
– Вижу кипящий котёл – он движется с севера, – ответил я.
14 – С севера хлынет беда на всех, кто живёт в этой стране, – сказал мне Вечный. – 15 Ведь Я призываю все народы северных царств, – возвещает Вечный. –
Они придут, и их цари поставят свои престолы
у ворот Иерусалима,
вокруг всех окружающих его стен,
у всех городов Иудеи.
16 Я оглашу приговор Своему народу
за все их злодеяния:
они оставили Меня,
и возжигали благовония чужим богам,
и поклонялись творениям своих рук.
17 Соберись! Встань и скажи им всё, что Я повелю тебе. Не бойся их, не то Я сокрушу тебя перед ними. 18 Сегодня Я сделал тебя укреплённым городом, железной колонной и бронзовой стеной, чтобы дать отпор всей этой земле – царям Иудеи, вельможам, священнослужителям и народу этой страны. 19 Они будут воевать против тебя, но не одолеют, потому что Я с тобой и спасу тебя, – возвещает Вечный.

1 Ce livre contient les paroles de Jérémie, fils de Hilqiya, l’un des prêtres, qui habitait à Anatoth[a], dans le territoire de Benjamin.
2 L’Eternel lui a parlé la treizième année du règne de Josias[b], fils d’Amôn et roi de Juda, 3 et sous le règne de Yehoyaqim, fils de Josias, roi de Juda, et jusqu’à la fin de la onzième année du règne de Sédécias, fils de Josias, roi de Juda, jusqu’à la déportation des habitants de Jérusalem au cinquième mois[c].
L’appel de Jérémie
4 L’Eternel m’adressa la parole en ces termes :
5 Avant de t’avoir formé dans le sein de ta mère, je t’ai choisi ; et avant ta naissance, je t’ai consacré : je t’ai destiné à être prophète pour les peuples.
6 Je répondis : Hélas, Seigneur Eternel, je ne sais pas m’exprimer, car je suis un adolescent.
7 Mais l’Eternel me répondit :
Ne dis pas : « Je suis un adolescent » ; tu iras trouver tous ceux auprès de qui je t’enverrai, et tu leur diras tout ce que je t’ordonnerai. 8 N’aie pas peur de ces gens, car je suis avec toi pour te délivrer, l’Eternel le déclare.
9 Alors l’Eternel tendit la main et me toucha la bouche, et il me dit : Tu vois : je mets mes paroles dans ta bouche. 10 Sache que je te confie aujourd’hui une mission envers les peuples et les royaumes : celle d’arracher et de renverser, de ruiner et de détruire, de construire et de planter[d].
L’arbre-veilleur et le chaudron
11 L’Eternel m’adressa encore la parole en ces termes : Que vois-tu, Jérémie ?
Je répondis : Je vois une branche d’amandier.
12 – Tu as bien vu, me dit l’Eternel. Eh bien, je veille[e] sur ma parole pour accomplir ce que j’ai dit.
13 Puis l’Eternel m’adressa une seconde fois la parole : Que vois-tu encore ?
Et je répondis : Je vois un chaudron en train de bouillir et qui se trouve au nord.
14 Et l’Eternel me dit :
C’est, en effet, du nord[f] ╵que le malheur viendra
se déverser ╵sur tous les habitants de ce pays.
15 Car je vais appeler ╵tous les peuples des royaumes du Nord,
l’Eternel le déclare.
Ils viendront, et chacun ╵installera son trône
devant les portes de Jérusalem,
face à tous ses remparts,
et à tous ceux ╵des villes de Juda.
16 Et je rendrai mon jugement ╵contre les habitants de ce pays
pour tout le mal qu’ils ont commis ;
parce qu’ils m’ont abandonné,
qu’ils offrent de l’encens ╵à d’autres dieux,
et se prosternent ╵devant les dieux ╵qu’ils se sont fabriqués.
17 Toi donc, tu mettras ta ceinture[g]
et tu te lèveras, ╵tu leur diras
tout ce que je t’ordonnerai.
Ne te laisse pas terrifier par eux,
sinon c’est moi qui, devant eux, ╵m’en vais te terrifier.
18 Et moi dès aujourd’hui, ╵je fais de toi ╵comme une ville fortifiée,
comme un pilier de fer ╵et un rempart de bronze ╵face à tout le pays :
face aux rois de Juda, ╵à ses ministres,
à ses prêtres et à son peuple.
19 Ils te feront la guerre,
mais ils ne l’emporteront pas sur toi,
car je suis avec toi, ╵l’Eternel le déclare, ╵je te délivrerai.

- 1.1 Anatoth: ville attribuée aux prêtres et aux lévites (Jos 21.18) dans le territoire de Benjamin, à environ 5 kilomètres au nord-est de Jérusalem. Salomon destitua le grand-prêtre Abiatar (1 R 2.26) et le bannit à Anatoth. Depuis lors, les prêtres descendants d’Abiatar (dont Jérémie) n’eurent plus le droit d’accomplir leurs fonctions dans le Temple.
- 1.2 Josias a régné en Juda de 640 à 609 av. J.-C. (voir 2 R 22.1 à 23.30 ; 2 Ch 34 à 35). Cette parole de l’Eternel date donc de 628627.

1 The words of Jeremiah son of Hilkiah, one of the priests at Anathoth(A) in the territory of Benjamin. 2 The word of the Lord came(B) to him in the thirteenth year of the reign of Josiah(C) son of Amon king of Judah, 3 and through the reign of Jehoiakim(D) son of Josiah king of Judah, down to the fifth month of the eleventh year of Zedekiah(E) son of Josiah king of Judah, when the people of Jerusalem went into exile.(F)
The Call of Jeremiah
4 The word of the Lord came to me, saying,
5 “Before I formed you in the womb(G) I knew[a](H) you,
before you were born(I) I set you apart;(J)
I appointed you as a prophet to the nations.(K)”
6 “Alas, Sovereign Lord,” I said, “I do not know how to speak;(L) I am too young.”(M)
7 But the Lord said to me, “Do not say, ‘I am too young.’ You must go to everyone I send you to and say whatever I command you. 8 Do not be afraid(N) of them, for I am with you(O) and will rescue(P) you,” declares the Lord.(Q)
9 Then the Lord reached out his hand and touched(R) my mouth and said to me, “I have put my words in your mouth.(S) 10 See, today I appoint you over nations(T) and kingdoms to uproot(U) and tear down, to destroy and overthrow, to build and to plant.”(V)
11 The word of the Lord came to me: “What do you see, Jeremiah?”(W)
“I see the branch of an almond tree,” I replied.
12 The Lord said to me, “You have seen correctly, for I am watching[b](X) to see that my word is fulfilled.”
13 The word of the Lord came to me again: “What do you see?”(Y)
“I see a pot that is boiling,” I answered. “It is tilting toward us from the north.”
14 The Lord said to me, “From the north(Z) disaster will be poured out on all who live in the land. 15 I am about to summon all the peoples of the northern kingdoms,” declares the Lord.
“Their kings will come and set up their thrones
in the entrance of the gates of Jerusalem;
they will come against all her surrounding walls
and against all the towns of Judah.(AA)
16 I will pronounce my judgments(AB) on my people
because of their wickedness(AC) in forsaking me,(AD)
in burning incense to other gods(AE)
and in worshiping(AF) what their hands have made.(AG)
17 “Get yourself ready! Stand up and say(AH) to them whatever I command you. Do not be terrified(AI) by them, or I will terrify you before them. 18 Today I have made you(AJ) a fortified city, an iron pillar and a bronze wall to stand against the whole land—against the kings of Judah, its officials, its priests and the people of the land. 19 They will fight against you but will not overcome(AK) you, for I am with you(AL) and will rescue(AM) you,” declares the Lord.

2 To whom the word of the Lord came in the days of Josiah the son of Amon king of Judah, in the thirteenth year of his reign.
3 It came also in the days of Jehoiakim the son of Josiah king of Judah, unto the end of the eleventh year of Zedekiah the son of Josiah king of Judah, unto the carrying away of Jerusalem captive in the fifth month.
4 Then the word of the Lord came unto me, saying,
5 Before I formed thee in the belly I knew thee; and before thou camest forth out of the womb I sanctified thee, and I ordained thee a prophet unto the nations.
6 Then said I, Ah, Lord God! behold, I cannot speak: for I am a child.
7 But the Lord said unto me, Say not, I am a child: for thou shalt go to all that I shall send thee, and whatsoever I command thee thou shalt speak.
8 Be not afraid of their faces: for I am with thee to deliver thee, saith the Lord.
9 Then the Lord put forth his hand, and touched my mouth. And the Lord said unto me, Behold, I have put my words in thy mouth.
10 See, I have this day set thee over the nations and over the kingdoms, to root out, and to pull down, and to destroy, and to throw down, to build, and to plant.
11 Moreover the word of the Lord came unto me, saying, Jeremiah, what seest thou? And I said, I see a rod of an almond tree.
12 Then said the Lord unto me, Thou hast well seen: for I will hasten my word to perform it.
13 And the word of the Lord came unto me the second time, saying, What seest thou? And I said, I see a seething pot; and the face thereof is toward the north.
14 Then the Lord said unto me, Out of the north an evil shall break forth upon all the inhabitants of the land.
15 For, lo, I will call all the families of the kingdoms of the north, saith the Lord; and they shall come, and they shall set every one his throne at the entering of the gates of Jerusalem, and against all the walls thereof round about, and against all the cities of Judah.
16 And I will utter my judgments against them touching all their wickedness, who have forsaken me, and have burned incense unto other gods, and worshipped the works of their own hands.
17 Thou therefore gird up thy loins, and arise, and speak unto them all that I command thee: be not dismayed at their faces, lest I confound thee before them.
18 For, behold, I have made thee this day a defenced city, and an iron pillar, and brasen walls against the whole land, against the kings of Judah, against the princes thereof, against the priests thereof, and against the people of the land.
19 And they shall fight against thee; but they shall not prevail against thee; for I am with thee, saith the Lord, to deliver thee.
